A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

So what? Check online in the game. Online servers aren't up.

Half of you give no fucks about the game but here y'all are to talk shit when you can.

You keep on posting like you know but not answering my question... Did the devs confirm the two players who found eachother will be able to see eachother when the servers are more stable?

Yeah but it's all not probably running on one server so their interaction might be borked. I think day 1 of a online component and the outrage is crazy. I mean if a few days down the road it still don't work then yeah, you can get angry.

I'll say this one more time. Sean can end the entire silliness by saying them not seeing each-other is a server issue. The discussion is about whether or not it is possible even with the servers working.

It was obvious to me from the start that the only online aspect was the naming of planets and creatures. Otherwise they would have shown player encounters. You can be sure that if a feature is coded, the devs will show it.
I don't think a future patch will be able to implement a Journey-like experience. The game doesn't seem to be built for it and would need a serious infrastructure reworking IMO. It seems the game is static and not shared except for the planet names.

No they didn't meet. Later the guy posted they found the same planet, but didn't meet real-time.

You clearly have major issues with anyone criticizing your new favorite game.

Was this the straw that broke your view of the game? Were you loving your purchase until you read about this?

If not, the agenda is pretty blatant.

So the last update in that reddit thread says they finally met up. So it works.

Why is this still a thread? Time to close this shit hole.

they couldnt see each other - i know you're eager to defend your baby, but this shit deserves the railing its getting.

Sean hasn't lied. I can't believe there is 41 pages on this...just two people have met so far and for whatever reason the matchmaking didn't work.

One example, on day 1, is proof of nothing in terms of game functionality.

Everyone just has to wait a few days and there will be information updates and/or server fixes and/or other people with different internet providers, different routers, etc and the matchmaking will work.

Basically everyone just needs to calm down and wait.

Yup. Small team has servers melt on DAY ONE and people automatically assume deception and lies, embarrassing. How many AAA games have had even worse servers on launch day? Holy fuck.

How many times has he said its possible but highly unlikely to happen? Because one time two randos on release day cant see each other in their games everyone trips over themselves. I'm not sure who is being unreasonable here.
I don't think a confirmation that they should have been able to see each other but couldn't because of server load is too crazy to ask for (assuming that's the truth).

Sean brought this on himself with his deliberately vague and "mysterious" way of marketing the game.

Oh come on, if this were Ubisoft or EA we'd all be jumping down their throats too.

Again, why dont simply say on twitter there are server problem? Dodging the question dont help them

He said in his last tweets that way too many people are playing and stuff about network guys. For me it's pretty obvious that he tries to tell us, the servers are overloaded - but his way.

Also
this thread is funny - please keep raging :D

Do they have to? They've come out and said clearly that the game is a single player experience. People should base their expectations, and buying decision on that. If multiplayer actually does exist then that's icing on the cake.

Yeah but he's already said there's network issues, didn't he?

I mean he could be more direct but some of the shit slinging over this day 1 is laughable.

Being online doesn't make a difference with NAT. I've been online with a buddy, both in Rainbow Six and we can't party up because his NAT is incompatible with mine. Do you understand what NAT is? Or are you just being upset for the sake of it?

Are you being condescending "just for the sake of it?"

People are frustrated because the thing they paid for doesn't seem to work correctly, and it might be because the functionality doesn't even exist. People are entitled to their emotions, and just because they aren't yours doesn't make them invalid.

Why do you seem so personally invested in what other people think about a game that just came out yesterday and you had no stake in the creation of, anyway? Like, do you just completely lack empathy? Sorry if that sounds harsh, I guess I'm not even specifically talking to you at this point. It's just weird that so many people are going out of their way to defend a piece of entertainment that's had some obvious marketing mis-messaging going on. Can't you at least possibly understand the angle from which people might feel disappointed?

Sometimes I feel like NeoGAF posters feel like GAF encompasses the entire gaming community and a game's OT is that game's entire audience.

Think outside yourself.

I agree on this being a huge problem (and the reason this thread is exploding). I can absolutely understand that something went wrong and a technical issue, bug or server overload (or whatever) prevented the players to see each other and to interact (somehow...)

But this Tweet, the ambiguous tweets from today and the fact that those two players weren't able to see each other makes me think that live player interaction isn't possible in this game at all.

nmstwitter2usmk.png

To me this tweet was just to clear up any confusion with people thinking this was a co-op experience. I've had friends ask me about MP for the game and I've had to tell them what it's like. So I think Sean just wants to reiterate that it's a rare thing that doesn't add a whole lot to the game right now and if you're going to base your purchase on it being an MP game, you'll be severely disappointed.

I'm sure more MP stuff will be added later though.

Lol at the turn on Murray, saying he's this "fake shy guy" now. I'd bet my house these were the same people who were saying how much they loved Sean's nervousness at each E3. This backlash is so pathetic and was spotted from a mile off.

Nope. I was always doubtful about a lot of stuff and I never stated that I like or dislike him. I actually do not care about him, his company, his life or what he caress about. For me he is just a guy making a product I'm interested in, but a product he lied about. There is no hate or anything else in this. I have no brand loyalty and don't care who is making something as long as the final product is something I like.

I preordered the game on steam and I'll most likely refund it after playing around with it for an hour. If I still like it, I may keep it. But I'd still like to know if player encounters and interactions are possible before doing so.

They also said you could play with your friends so some people would like to know if thats truly thats the case as well.

The game menu tells you the server is offline and you can't connect. What else do you need? Seems rather obvious if this is the case.

Except for when the two streamers were both online, on PSN and in the same place on the same planet and both had the green circle showing they are connected to the NMS services and they still didn't see each other after several attempts at re-logging and re connecting. So according to that there were no issues.

Sounds like some very rough player instancing code. Elite Dangerous has the same issue, mostly because Frontier Developments didn't really have the foresight when coding the game to realize that people would want to fight in massive wings of 30+ if they wanted to and because Frontier went the cheap route of making multiplayer fully peer-to-peer instead of providing proper server-side hosting.

Ad a result, it is often difficult to get a big battle going because you may get put in an empty instance...or the one with everyone on the other faction and none of yours...etc.

So while I understand the likelihood of seeing another player, if players *want* to meet up and purposely put themselves in the same place to do just that...they need to be able to.

There's definitely a mixed message coming from Sean Murray.
On one hand he tweets "this is not multiplayer" which can imply you can't see other players but on the other hand how do you explain this on the patch notes:

"Networking – Ability to scan star systems other players have discovered on the Galactic Map, increasing the chance of collision"

Possibly this is just a server issue?

Let's hope so - although I'm looking forward to play this as single-player the possibility of meeting someone else in-game is kinda magical due to the sheer size of the galaxy!

I'm just saying, based on the last several pages, you seem extreeeemly worked up about a feature that may or may not still be in the game.

Like let's say it isn't. Either you love the game, and this one feature completely ruins it to the point where you spend this much time freaking out about it on gaf.

Or

You already didn't like the game and you're using this as a jumping off point.

Both of those seem rather silly. And that's also ignoring option 3, where the thing you're throwing a fit over actually works and this whole thing is *clap* "fucking nothing".

Hell, I'm not even a champion for the game. I played all day today but got pretty bored at the end. Just pointing out how bizarre some reactions in this thread are. The lack of perspective is boggling.

I don't see other ways to do it. Every company struggle with online the first days during massively hyped games. It's not unreasonable for nothing to work online.

However if this turns out true, yeah, I'm less than happy about it.

People are acting like he's being asked to give up his newborn baby. They just want an answer to a straight forward and simple question. Can you see other players in the game even when there are no server issues? Why is that so hard to answer? It's either yes or no.

Are you wrong to interpret the tweet in this way? No, and that's the whole reason for this thread. Sean is not able to give a clear statement on a very simple thing.

Maybe they need to try and figure things out before they can give a straight answer. Who knows if the patch might have fucked something up. Nobody knows yet. Everyone so quick to lose their shit and demanding straight answers immediately is a pretty bad look.

They did not see each other.

They found the exact same spot and inhabited it, but there was no interaction, no visuals of each other or anything.

Those two are not really the brightest people when it comes to online and they had no idea how to deal with suddenly having thousands of eyes on them.

Again, they did NOT see each other, when he speaks of "found each other" he meant "we were in the same star system".

I like that, in order to criticize the game, people have been:
1) not reading OPs
2) not reading articles
3) not watching videos (DF framerate drop case)
4) straight pretending not to understand proper english.

Here, let me get the bit you all should have read:

We added a 'scan for other players' in the Galactic Map to try to encourage this happening. We wanted it to happen - but the first day?

We want people to be aware they are in a shared universe. We added online features, and some Easter Eggs to create cool moments. We hope to see those happening... but too many of you are playing right now. [...]It is a testament to how amazing our network coders are that Discoveries are still working at all.

Can't really tell what's so cryptic about it. Servers are hammered, it's a miracle that the discoveries upload is still working, and people go on with the "he lied!!1!!!" thing?

You really had to doubt my word despite me already telling you he later clarified never meeting the other player in real-time?

We did it! Two players: me and Psytokat met! The odds were not in our favour though, but we pulled it off! After warping for the first time I stumbled into the starting system of another player... instantly, I messaged him, he backtracked, and we met at the same space station! Although we never actually saw eachother (we tried almost everything) the fact that we met is absolutely amazing!

I agree his statements are very vague, and if it's the case there is no way you could meet up another player it's inexcusable he didn't just state they had to cut it. For as far as we know, the meet-up of those two was bugged or they were in different instances, etc. The way he keeps tweeting know gives me the feeling there still is some way to meet each other, because I can't see why he would keep lying about it (if he does, the shitstorm is warranted imo)

...

Simple: not impede sales at this most important stage of the release cycle. He perpetuates the narrative with elusive non-answers without ever fully committing to it.

Watch him backtrack in a couple of days when he will say something like "we never said that you could really see other player models ... but you get this dot on your radar that indicates another player is near you (or something similar). That's what we meant all along".

Mark these words.

Maybe they need to try and figure things out before they can give a straight answer. Who knows if the patch might have fucked something up. Nobody knows yet. Everyone so quick to lose their shit and demanding straight answers immendiately is a pretty bad look.
Really? Even if there was a bug being able to see someone would be a feature they would have implemented beforehand and therefore would know if it exists or not.

I don't really care, yes I was being condescending deliberately because he completely dodged the point about their NAT and said "they were both online" which means nothing really, if one person's network isn't allowing them to connect to another's.

Right now, we have NO IDEA if this was mis-messaging or it's the servers buckling (which, might I add Sean has already said). You want to be upset about the game? go ahead. You want to ignore some facts (server's down, NAT is incompatible 50% of the time for one guy) and be incredibly impatient? I'll call you out.

IF seeing other characters is NOT in the game (we do not know that yet. people are still saying they lied, which is completely unfounded) I'll be disappointed and see why people are upset, yes. But I don't know if it is, or isn't. So I find the people being upset very very funny.

People are too used to getting their information straight away, it's 10am on a Wednesday Sean is probably working tooth and nail to get the release for PC ready. He might even be looking into whatever issue is here, patience is key. Does it really harm people if they don't hear the cause for a couple of days? Does it really warrant some of the posts in this thread?

Except they didn't. If you watched the streams you';d see they "found" each other in the sense that one found the others planet and they coordinated to meet on the same planet at the same time. They were both streaming from the planet at the same time while connected while speaking over voice chat but never actually saw each other.

It'd be like if we both started up A Link to the Past and stayed in Link's house, we'd both be playing at the same time, in the same place and talking to each other on skype but we wouldn't be playing together because we couldn't see each other or interact in any way.

Was this the straw that broke your view of the game? Were you loving your purchase until you read about this?

If not, the agenda is pretty blatant.

What agenda? That devs should be up-front about what exactly their game is and isn't capable of?

I guarantee you there are people out there that paid attention to the marketing and dev interviews for this game and pre-ordered it alongside their friends thinking they'd be able to set a mutual destination and work towards meeting up with each other in game.

So what if it happened Day 1 as opposed to Week 4?
Were those people supposed to spend days or weeks - according to the dev-speak on how "vast" the universe is - working towards meeting up with each other only to find out that it isn't possible and then just sort of shrug and say "Well it's the journey that matters"?

What could the "agenda" you're talking about possibly be, in any malicious sense?

My fascination with this game pre-release was the idea that I could explore a massive, to-scale universe, and I'd never know when I was in danger of brushing up against another player, or group of players, who might be friendly, or evasive, or hostile. Much was said by the devs to give me the idea that at least something like that would be possible, and little was said to disprove it. For every "This isn't that type of game" there's been a direct "yes" to "Will we be able to play with our friends?"

So what the fuck is this "agenda?"
Not automatically liking everything as though there's a dopamine release in my head that somebody else is remote controlling?

It's kind of sad,

Sean seems to me a very passionate guy, who led a small team in creating a wonderfull unique experience. He's a programmer, a coder, a computer scientist and an artist. He isn't a salesman or a communication manager. He talks about their game in the same manner as an artist talks about their work. Not telling you what to experience or what to expect, but just giving you an urge to go out and experience it yourselves. He doesn't want to give too much away, he wants the mystery to stay alive and let you imagine a bit.

I agree his communication isn't transparant, they would benefit from a communication manager or a community manager. He's just not good at it. They should be more clear on the issue, as it is clearly something a part of their customers is worried about.

But calling him names, comparing him to Peter, demonizing him is totally uncalled for.

Re-read my last post.

While you're at it, re read this (your) post and try to get some perspective. This really, really isn't something worth getting this upset over. Like, really take a step back and see how upset you are over something that's not a big deal. Even if it turns out it's not in the game, I just can't believe it could cause someone this much grief. And we don't even know if it's true yet lol

As I said before, I'm already kinda bored with the game. I'm not defending it to defend it. I just can't wrap my head around the devastation that's been cause from a minor feature that may or may not be in the game.
