Why would you conclude "this thing is not in the game" based simply on not having seen it? Interviews had SM saying that things like that dinosaur would be one-in-a-million encounters.

Whilst I can't disagree with this, having the whole "you but never find x because we have 18 quintillion planets" is a heck of a good get out clause!

Isn't this thread worthy? Seems like a pretty big lie if the creatures like the ones featured in the trailers + interviews are not in the game.

False advertisement: The Game.

I'm just thinking if this was an EA/Ubi/Activision/WB game the review thread with no reviews would not be 70 pages

If I had to guess I would say that Sony's involvement in this game has something to do with how the review thread turned out.

Are there even settlements in the game? On planets I mean, not space stations.

I saw a couple of outputs and abandoned buildings but they all contain (maybe) one alien to trade with and that's it.

Are all the planets contain only beast level intelligence creatures? No primitive, bow-and-arrow kind aliens?

in regards to the large creatures, according to Sean a few days ago they are in the game but he hasn't seen a streamer find one yet. They're very rare:

In this case he hasn't been vague (a trademark of his) but outright stated they are in the game.
As rare as finding another player perhaps?

So rare that not one player has seen a single one of these species? Call me a skeptic, but if they don't start popping up within a week, they are not in the game. Also, that would be idiotic. Make the coolest species 1/ 1 Billion spawn rate, or something.

What is it about NMS that suddenly makes people want to create all these "we've been lied to" threads?

...The high likelyhood that we have been lied to?

Probably not, no. Not unless we get some concrete info from like, a datamine or something that indicates that those kinds of creatures are impossible. For all we know, they really are just (poorly, imo) designed to be impossibly rare.

This impressions thread, the MP thread, and the OT are prooobably enough for now.

All right. I won't make one.

Dude, game has been released only a couple of days ago and the game is huge.

Jim Sterling:

No Man’s Sky effectively portrays the loneliness of space by providing so little for the player to do that it’s tempting to flush one’s self out of an airlock just to break the tedium.

Not that you can do that. That would be too interesting.

At least I know I'm not the only one. Was starting to think I was crazy or stupid or something

What is it about NMS that suddenly makes people want to create all these "we've been lied to" threads?

The part where a bunch of people who had this game marketed at them fairly haphazardly feel like they were lied too, I would imagine.

I don't know if I feel lied to, per se, but I feel like they should have walked back a lot of the early marketing for this game before release to temper expectations a bit. I'm going with "poor PR handling" rather than "intentionally lying" but still.

I think also it seems there's little linking planet place in system to it's make up - for example, you'd expect planets closer to a sun to be more barren and planets furtehr away to be more icy but from what I can tell this sort of thing hasn't been included.

Yeah. I'm currently in a F star system. The planet that appears closet to the star has a temp of -15C during the day. Uh, ok. Obviously the game isn't realistic though so I have kind of accepted the fact that it's not going to make much sense anyway.

There is an altitude buffer, it won't let you fly below a certain altitude, you can pitch it to the surface, but it just holds a nose down attitude rather than descending if you are at the buffer, you can climb, up and out of the atmosphere.

It controls like an FPS, with LS doing all the movement, there is no yaw, but there is roll on the shoulder buttons.

The throttle is automatically held at a certain level, but you can press R2 to speed up or L2 to slowdown, there is no granularity in the throttle control.

All landing and docking is automatic, landing is a one button press affair, you press square to land, docking is taken out of your hands when you are close enough to a station.

Blueprint upgrades always take up a slot, I am not 100% sure, but I think the base weapons (beam etc) are identical and just buffed by the use of blueprints, I might be wrong on this though........

Hmmmm, shame you can't buzz the local wildlife but oh well.

There was one person that found a huge-ass fish pre-patch actually, but it suffered the same fate as the other fish with that sticking in the ground bug.

They might have made them a bit too rare perhaps, but they are definitly in the game. And It'll probably be quite the event when somebody finds it and shares it online. (maybe their intent to make them this rare?)

What exactly have we been lied to about?

As I said, I'm not buying it. If they show up I'll eat crow, but before that I think they aren't in.

Are the creatures showcased before release possible to come across in the game?

That the creatures from a trailer two years ago, from a game that does procedural generation, have not shown up yet from a game that has been out... two days? That is the definition of "lying to us"?

and this;

People and vote for and against without even having to play the game. User reviews are meaningless.

More like corporate in board rooms panicking about the possibility of having to come clean after a day about cuts and scale backs.

I'd say Sony are as much to blame as HG just now, as no doubt whatever contractual/money tie ups they have are allowing Sony muscle to prevent HG just opening the floodgates of PR honesty. Reviews are going to hit them hard in the coming week, but it sucks gamers have to rely on them for honesty when they've been embargoed heavily and most have already spent the $60/£40+.

Still, as an indie studio that is your soul you sell if you want the big bucks and big marketing. I can't feel much empathy for them even if the studio are on lockdown due to Sony. They still delivered the PR on a plate for gamers, Sean especially.

It surely couldn't have added too much to include some kind of algoritum or something?

Sure the dinos could be so rare that we haven't seen them yet but can we agree that the behavioural patterns (those deer things running away from a rampaging "tricerarops") atleast are long gone?

Nothing comparable (in size) to the creatures has shown up from the trailer released two years ago. (and I bet I could find more recent trailers/interviews)

And as I said, if they show up and are simply amazingly rare, (idiotically rare, if 99.99999% of your players will never ever see a single one) I will admit I am wrong. But I seriously doubt they'd make them so rare.

It's not only about these specific creatures, it's also about the behaviour of and interaction between the creatures in the trailers vs. what I've seen until now in the streams. Maybe that's also very rare.

My point was that doesn't this more or less happen with like every other game? With NMS, it seems like the lies (or vagueness, from what I've seen) have been comparably minor, even, but I admit I haven't followed the situation that closely.

I'm trying to stay as neutral as possible here.

I call out lies when I see them. There is a weird defense force for this game that thinks that people would be more kind to the game if it was from EA or something. (and I bet people would be even more harsh)

Exactly, Steam reviews, although rather meme-heavy at times is a better view at how people like the game or not since you actually need to have the game to review.

Well like I said they do run from you. They run when you shoot the ground. Some are aggressive some aren't. I've had a tiger looking thing attack this mole like creature(than attack me.

Biggest disappointment to me is the ship combat aspects (judging from reviews). Only the most basic dogfighting mechanics, only two types of weapons (no missiles or countermeasures), no management of shield or energy and other ships are just... there, not doing anything like trading or exploring, just there. They probably don't even have a bounty system for you to capture specific targets.

I hate to repeat myself, but there are only two reviews cataloged on Metacritic. There's no way this game is so vast and deep that critics just can't come to a conclusion about it unless they're waiting for the PC version. That's the real embargo.

Yeah for its scope, the game is incredibly limited. There's just not much to do and what's there is very simplistic. It feels like a budget game through and through.

Intrigued about this, people here really were disappointed by SimCity 4? I've always thought it was awesome and very well regarded. Had lots of fun with it.

http://kotaku.com/5991077/your-complete-guide-to-the-simcity-disaster

Sorry it was Sim City 5, not 4. The one EA made always-online.

People are looking at individual grains of sand on a beach and are mad they haven't found the specific one they're looking for.

What does this even mean?

Yes thats exactly what we need another thread about how Hello Games "lied". Given the scale of the game its quite possible people havent come across them yet. But nope another dumpster fire of a thread is what we need.

Not to forget the trailer on the last page depicting things which are not ingame.

Thats a pretty definitive statement, where's the proof?

Can anyone tell me what the records section of a planets info relate to? I've got 2 left showing ?????? and no idea what I need to do to fill them in.

I have replied multiple times to the "rarity" argument on this very page. Do you really think there is any sense in making them so rare that of millions of players across a long time (days, weeks, months?) only one person would see one?

Better of in the Ot dude but I'll help. You may be missing two specific points, species, flora. Does your planet have water? If so make sure there aren't any fish

Edit:and I'm literally sitting here telling people about gameplay experiences I've witnessed but instead they rather rage at something they aren't sure off...

I don't think anyone lied. Games change over time when in development.

The biggest problem I find with NMS is that it simply is in the wrong retail category. A full priced disc game for what really should be a sub $30 digital release, much like the many other survival and exploration games out there. I'm not trying to poop on the game by saying this, but it just doesn't belong at the top tier of retail. Sony at press events like E3 and others seemed to put NMS up there with other AAA third party games and then they ask full price for it and put it on a disc like all the other big blockbuster games. This alone changes peoples expectations.

I blame Sony more than anyone else for people feeling disappointed or lied to. They chose to prop this game up at a level it should never have been. Were this a quieter release with less fanfare people would feel far more comfortable with what was actually released.

Sure, but how long do we need to play the game to come to the conclusion that X is simply not there?

Or are we still talking a year from now that we just haven't found the cool stuff yet because 18 quantillion, procedural magic, etc.

No I think its a stupid idea making rare, but plenty of Dev's implement stupid things. It seems just as foolish to conclude after the games been out two days that we've been lied to because no-one found something the developers explicitly said was rare.

Till Friday when someone datamines the PC version? Can you wait 24 hours or so before venting your spleen in another "WE WERE LIED TO!" thread?

Why would you conclude "this thing is not in the game" based simply on not having seen it? Interviews had SM saying that things like that dinosaur would be one-in-a-million encounters.

My starting planet has roughly T-REX sized weirdo dinosaur mutants. It wasn't as big as the ones in the trailer, but it was surprisingly big and towered over me. I spent about 6-8 hours on my starting planet, and I only saw them once, the other smaller species were way more plentiful in comparison.

How long do you think we should wait until we can reasonably conclude that something isn't in the game? I think a week should be more than enough, what about you?

EDIT: Friday. Sure, we can wait.
