Digital Foundry: Hands-on with DriveClub VR

What's the chance that we get a neo-version with weather effects on? Are they allowed to do that?

In their Neo doc it says the Neo version cannot have any features that aren't present on the base version. Given that is from an old PowerPoint deck, they could have changed that to allow games to really take advantage of the bump but we'll see.

One too many compromises for me. I expect more from nextgen.
I don't believe it will really look that compromised in a small screen close to your eyes.

The compromises become strong when you look via HDTV and that is not the purpose of the VR experience.

And you have Neo soon.

According the video though, there seem to be quite enormous lag between the guy's head movement and the cam in-game. Color me not excited.
Yeap color me surprised the second screen has lag lol it is not where the direct output goes.

If you have lag on VR screen then we will have a issue.

Im looking forward to Neo and hope we can see a better experience. All im saying is i own Driveclub ans stuff like lots of cars and weather like those gorgeous rain effects and track reflections will be missed. IMO

That is inaccurate. It's an issue with the way the video was produced.

The amount of latency when using PSVR is, for all intents an purposes, identical the Oculus Rift or Vive. It feels perfect without any hint of a delay.

That's what I wanted to hear. It was probably the social screen lag plus the video editing that caused it

Compared the feeling of actually driving a real race car in VR. I doubt it.

Of course they'll be missed, but expecting them to be there in a version of the game running at twice the framerate, in 3D, on the same hardware, is unreasonable.

This. You can clearly see an edit in the video at 2:40. That's where the 2 images lose sync.

It's nothing to do with "lag"

You're creating an unwinnable situation though.

If you get the most out of next gen for a TV game, then inevitably that will have to be dialled back for PSVR due to the higher demands it places on the hardware. If you develop for PSVR then any TV mode would be wasting performance if you didn't increase details.

An identical PSVR/PS4 version is not the most efficient use of hardware.

Then you don't understand VR at this time: all consumer VR is a compromise, a trade-off, between graphical fidelity and presence.

We accept the graphical "downgrade" because the pay-off of being "in" the game: presence, can add even greater value.

So you need to understand that point, even if you don't agree with it.

And until you do then you are just wasting bandwidth in these threads.

Instead of a discussion of a pretty cool game the thread turned into a battleground in just a few posts. Shameful.

I'm keeping an open mind until I can play it myself. This is one of those things that a video won't do proper justice.

Man fuck sony for letting evolustion go. I will keep supporting this gams and i hope it sell very well in VR too so Sony can eat their hats for not being able to produce a sequel ..

Makes me very sad still too. Liverpool decision also....

Both those devs were and still are amazing, and it's a shame their flagship series under Sony won't continue.

DriveClub has been the best surprise in the arcade racing genre in over a decade imo.

Who's to say that Sony couldn't contact Evolution/Codemasters to make a game for them???

I'm a little surprised by the comparison to PC VR racing games. While normally you can use the argument sands of combinations of hardware' for limited PC tuning, in the case of VR there are really only two specific targets, so it should be possible to optimise for position/scale etc.

Retrofitting isn't an excuse as driveclub is in the same situation

Sounds positive indeed. I'll get PSVR as a cheaper but apparently decent way to "try out" the tech and find out how well it suits me. I really want to jump to Vive but I know that some people are just unlucky with how they react and I figure some prolonged use of PS VR is a good way to get an idea how that works for me.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
The only thing I'm worried about is will it feel the same with just using a controller or do you need to have a racing setup for the immersion via VR to work?

Do DF say anything about the sound? Im interested to understand if we might be moving to binaural audio with VR where the game places you in first-person.

It seems to be a topic that doesnt really get discussed

Like i said looking forward to Neo..

Yeah but then you're just going to be disappointed by how much the Neo VR version is cut back compared to the Neo non VR version (Hypothetical versions obviously).

You can't have a 30fps single screen version that's pushing the hardware to its limits and a 60-90fps version on dual screens with no compromises on the same hardware.

Drive Club VR is super impressive.

Is Thrustmaster T150 a good point of entry to Wheels?
Never had one before... I don't want to spend that much and I don't know if I should consider other feedback wheels that are around 150€ like this one.

I didn't notice anything special or unique about the audio - it sounded like Driveclub with headphones.

You won't have the feeling of actually driving a car just because you have a VR headset on. There's a huge gap between VR and actual driving simulators and even those don't give you the "feel" of actually driving a car, hydraulics and all.

Sorry it was largely a general point and I dont know what DC VR is employing audibly, but hoping that because the nature of VR that we move to binaural sound design and with this being the first PSVR game analysed I thought we might hear more about it in the future...

I'm still super excited for PSVR even though I am not getting it at launch. I really hope it will be the best attempt at fully mainstream-ising VR in a way that will benefit everyone through careful software and experience curation.

I'm not a big fan of driving games but if I had to get a VR one sounds like this one would be it.

Although I wonder if the Neo version would allow more cars or weather, I assume not because of the parity clause but it'd be a shame if just simple weather was enough to break that clause.

It just comes down to dev talent imo. This type of game could be done on PC VR, the devs just don't have the talent or knowledge required. I'm sure they'll get there in the future.

This is a game that most certainly sells the potential of VR. I think Sony should damn near include DriveClub with every headset at least.

Of course over time there will need to be better hardware for better experiences. But for the price this is a good start imo. Hopefully it pays off because this is another way to experience games.

I wonder how RE7 will be with PSVR.

Do we know the launch titles for PSVR? Because including DriveClub would be an awesome idea. They're selling it for $40 though so I doubt they'd want all that money to go away.

I'm still not sure about RE7 after everyone was saying how they were getting sick from it at E3, hopefully it's fixed by release, they got until next year.

Post back once Neo is out and reviews give the final realworld verdict. We will see then what Neo can and cant do, no guess work please. Until then this means nothing.

Yes, best wheel I've ever ownwd. I don't think I can justify £300 on a wheel but £130 I can, and it's very good, there's nothing else out there worth spending money on that costs less.

G29 is a better all round deal if you are prepared to spend the money because the pedals are noticeably better, but T150 is this gens GT Pro.

DriveClub plays brilliantly with a wheel as well, particularly in hardcore handling mode.

Resident Evil 7 is having its controls modified and selectable VR comfort levels are being added to alleviate motion sickness.

I'm telling you guys, as soon as you start playing, graphic fidelity goes out the fucking window. You are in that world. You don't give a shit anymore. Playing heist was amazing.
Plus, psvr was so comfortable. My God. I never felt like I had something on my head.
My brother could not stop talking about the experience.

You start adding Neo to the mix? Give it some extra horsepower? Up the resolution? Ohh man, I can't wait.

Already have psvr pre-ordered and going to get Neo. Hopefully Neo comes out before vr though to be honest.

Glad to hear that the sense of driving in the cockpit view feels good. That is what VR is meant to deliver. If you just want the most high fidelity graphics and IQ then VR isn't for you. Even on PC you have to sacrifice something. Expecting that to not be the case on a $300 3 year old consumer electronics box is just idiotic expectations. It will also be idiotic on a new $400 box.

Argh I'm dumb, I meant, do we know the packaged titles. All I knew was Playroom VR.

And yeah I've been following that thread, although I'm not getting a PSVR until the 2nd or 3rd generation headset.

what he's trying to say is that is a fact that any VR game need more sacrifices than a normal game... so Driveclub Neo game will always look better than a Driveclub Neo Vr game.

I just hope Neo could run the PS4 version of driveclub at 60fps on VR

I'm ok with some sacrifices in fidelity for PSVR titles...in fact I expect them on a standard PS4.

But give me Presence® and my headset and I'm good.

Like others have mentioned, it will be interesting to see what the Neo brings to the table in regards to this.

You feel it in your stomach. It's not vomit inducing, but it definitely hits you.

I thought it was handled well enough that I didn't walk away feeling sick, though.

Are the Racing Bikes usable? I'd totally understand if they had to leave them out. :x

They don't but all PS VR games use 3D sound, whether it qualifies as true binaural I'm not sure, but regarded as being very good nonetheless. And DC has arguably the best sounds of any racing game as well!
