W-why are people dismissing the legitimate noise criticisms of the PS4 by telling them to listen to an actual jet engine. It's a figure of speech, christ. The PS4 has objectively more noise issues than the XB1, and the PS4 slim looks like ass compared to the XB1S. The PS4 can still have better hardware while also being louder and looking worse.

Actually, yes. If your aim is to make a clearly differential visual appearance which looks less costly, yes. The general visual cue is if it looks cheaper, it should be in the head of the consumer. Marketing.

This is mind boggling. There's no reason to make something look cheaper just because it is cheaper. If I saw two of the same products but with different casings at the same price, I would buy the nicer looking one

Xiaomi does the complete opposite and they're successful as hell. Don't know why they'd intentionally make it look physically unappealing for marketing, I understand those check sheets like "PS4 slim can do this, but Neo can do THIS!" but I don't know why you'd gimp the slim to do it

I'm hoping this is a joke post. People buying a console look at more than just the HDR/4K bullet point for christ's sake. The market that's actually interested in those features is ridiculously small and it's completely foolish to assume that these people are going to invest in a gaming console just for these features. Physical media is also on it's way out. People generally don't give a fuck about 4K Blu-ray.

I think you're underestimating how fast 4k is catching on. I just recently bought a 4k tv, as did many of my friends. The fact is, there are currently 3 uhd players on the market. Two of which cost 400 dollars, the third is the xbox one s at 300 for the 500gb. I don't give one damn about xbox games as I own a pc and ps4, but if the neo isn't out until next year, I'm certainly copping a one s to watch 4k media. Streaming has certainly taken over for most, but streaming 4k comes nowhere close the fidelity of 4k bluray, and it is currently impossible to rip 4k hdr blu rays to a computer so there are no pirated versions of these movies. The fact is, if you want a stunning 4k HDR experience on your shiny new TV, 4k blu ray is the only option. Even if you could illegally obtain 4k blu rays off the internet, they'd be around 100gb a piece. Like it or not, physical media is here to stay for anyone who cares about video quality.

Are you being serious or just fishing?

You honestly believe a company would design a piece of tech to look cheap, especially when that tech will still cost over £200?

I'm just saying it is done intentionally in marketing. It doesn't have to be. Depends on marketing tests and the directikn marketing wants to go. The cheaper look is something which would make some potential buyers walk away. I'm not saying it had to look cheaper just because it likely will be. It is just a potential marketing technique.

I'm not dismissing the noise. Yes it's louder than an Xbox One but it's objectively smaller and more powerful.

Here's a thought, maybe some people think the Xbox One and S look worse than the PlayStation 4 and Slim.

Exactly. This was also a thing with the Vita redesign, they specifically wanted to make it look less sophisticated and less expensive. This is straight from a Sony employee on a podcast.

I'm being serious. Yes, I believe it. Not saying that is for sure the case here, but, it is one way they may convey lower cost by visual que.

my hard graphic balls
I said some people will swear by their OG Xbox One that it looks better than OG PS4. Then i stated that OG PS4 is a masterclass in design, its not my opinion. It is a fact to people who pay attention to these things and appreciate good electronics design.

And you mate i edited in as a classic example of that because you keep going on and on about OG PS4 sounding like a jet engine (it doesn't, not even close). In fact you said "And masterclass design, engineering brilliance when it sounds like a jet engine?!? Bahahaha." Like that negates it being a brillaint design. The thought process behind the cooling system alone is fascinating.
Let me sort you out here.

This here below is my original post...
So because they are leading they can't have a beautiful product?
Pffffttt.
(so I was talking about the ability of making a beautiful product when leading, mentioning nowhere the noise of the system, let alone "going on and on" about it.)

...to which you replied with:
Because there are people who would swear by their Original Xbox One that it looks better than OG PS4, and yet ------------- (fill in the blank).

For people into electronics design, OG PS4 is a masterclass in design. It really shows the engineering brilliance of Sony.

Edit: classic example right above me.

Somehow you imagine that I said the OG Xbox One is better designed than the OG PS4 with your "classic example right above me.". I call you out on it, ask you to provide proof of where I said such things, you instead go on to list about why you think the PS4 is a masterclass in design. I then ask you again for the proof after which you imagine yet again I was talking about the noise of the system when I was not.

Do you see what I'm dealing with?

Man, there are some Peter Keating vs Howard Roark level design arguments going on in this thread.

I know it's awful. Sony doing good (Slim/Controller) but also questionable (PS+ price) things and Xbox and PC "master race" fangirls are just clutching at any straw possible to constantly downplay them.

For what it's worth, Howard Roark would've been a fan of the Xbox Ones design over the PS4s.

What I'm getting at is there's no reason to argue about the design of the systems. Sony made a prettier console but Microsoft made a more functional box, it being weaker has nothing to do with it its design making it a fantastic gaming machine. I'd take a PS4 the size of that if I didn't have to hear the fan all the time.

Well that's just dumb and I will never understand it. Just put a big ass sign with the lower price if you want to convey cheaper. Don't neuter the product.

Best to just ignore it. the slim console isn't the sexiest by any means but it's not terrible by any stretch.

I can see why people are upset by the + increase, but really at least here in the states I can't be too pressed about it. It comes out to 5 bucks a month and I never pay full price for it anyway.

But yea you have some people going way overboard about the design and the controller imo.

No one is trolling. Current PS4 is insanely loud, especially compared the the Xbox One.
Yup. My CUH-1200 model sounds like this:

Cant believe there are people defending the noise levels of the PS4/

I had to turn my TV way up to play Uncharted 4 it was so bad, i almost put on heaphones.

OK. Nothing wrong with that idea either. That would make a consumer feel they're getting a steal on a premium product. Both are legitimate ways to go about it.

Gonna have to agree with everyone here saying the PS4 is insanely loud. Cleaned the dust out of mine and it is still audible over whatever game I'm playing.

Mine is almost inaudible and definitely inaudible while playing a game.

Also I had to send my Bone back because of the clicking sound the fan made. It was unbearable.

The design arguments are a bit weird. When it comes to consoles, I want it small, quiet, and with an internal power supply. I don't need to wear it around my neck at a nightclub.

I like the rounded plastic/edges - quite a 90's look to it, the edges give off a snes kind of vibe.

That said, I could see why people wouldn't like it. It looks more 'consoley', perhaps toy-like, to me than the original design, I suppose.

My PS4 is loud. Very loud playing demanding games. Not sure if people are really lucky or lying when they say otherwise. Not expecting this slim model to fix the issue either, but have hope for the Neo.

Slim looks nice...I always think matte finish is best. Dunno what the consensus is but I certainly like it much better than the Xbox one S, don't like hole design much. Just throwing it out there since "fugly" keeps getting thrown around and I think it looks great.

Would really like a more quality DS4 though.

I also wish it was more of a rectangle rather than a square.

But if it seriously whisper quiet I may have to think about selling my current PS4. It's not jet engine loud, but it's at least hair dryer loud.

I've never noticed the volume of my PS4 but if this many people are finding it loud then I don't doubt that it's a problem.

I'd bet the slim is quieter, but I wonder how loud the Neo will be.

Well I know it's a popular opinion, a friend of mine has this problem, but I never had any problem. I had 2 PS4: 1 from day one (no problem at all, just let free space behind it to let it breathe and it's making no noise except when loading a disc for the first time) and a 1TB model from February and again no problem.

The only problem I had on the PS4 was the crappy DS4 sticks but on the 2nd model of DS4 it's perfect, no problem.

What I mean is don't make it looks like it happens to everybody because it doesn't.

I mean it's loud, but it can also be game dependent to. For instance Uncharted 4 made me think my ps4 was gonna blow up. That game gets ridiculously loud even when first reaching the main menu.

I had a PS4 at launch that was "jet engine" loud, and the same day I contacted PS community service asking, "Is my PS4 supposed to be louder than my 6-year-old PS3?" They said no, asked me to send them the PS4. They returned the PS4 (or replaced it)and it's been dead silent ever since, even during performance intensive games.

I think it looks okay though I prefer the more angular "OG PS4". I feel that this is a design that definitely lends itself to bright colours and not so much the generic black finish we've grown used to with many devices.

Some already posted examples like Teal & Orange look great IMO. Modern, pop and fun. The question of course is: will Sony go for those sort of colours with this revision/design? I think they should. Remains to be seen if they think the same...

My PS4 can be heard in the next room, and through headphones. This is why I'll be wanting to know how quiet Neo and Slim is before I buy it because I'm sick of gaming on a jet engine. I've never owned a console as loud.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
But why? It was plenty slim enough before.

It was't cheap enough for Sony to sell at a lower price and sell at a big enough profit fast enough, hence revision.

Its going to be the new base SKU, OG PS4 will be phased out, turned into the budget option and NEO will be the premium SKU

My PS4 is loud, at times, but nothing that actually overpowers any noise from the TV.

That said my Fat PS3 ( RIP) sounded like a full on jet engine during it's final year. Thankfully, my PS4 is nowhere near those levels of noise.

hahaha you guys don't know noisy.... I had a PC fitted with a GTX 580 AKA turbine edition. I learnt pretty early on that a good pair of noise cancelling headphones are necessary. Now for PS4 I use the Gold 2.0 and they are adequate and prevent me hearing anything outside the game.

The one thing I'm most curious about is if the NEO is a stop gap to give them a boost until PS5 is ready or if they are taking the Microsoft approach and just doing constant revisions like apple. Is sony able to keep iterating on the PS4 or are they locked out by the CPU?

Microsoft is only making the Scorpio because they want to end this gen. Sony CAN release PS5 early, but why would they want to? They are currently dominating with PS4 and the install base forces all the third parties to make sure their games run on PS4 hardware.

Sony has no reason to copy Scorpio, that's what Microsoft wants. Sony will do what's best for Sony, which means strengthening the hold of PS4 for the next few years by releasing the budget Slim.

PS5 will come out when Sony thinks the hardware they want could be released at $399. That is some where off in the future.

I can confirm there is 3 different sounds the ps4 makes. I don't know if there are different fans in my models or what... but all have different degrees of noise:

Launch ps4 nearly silent at all times, does wobble. Controller still 100% no clickys or stick disengration. Main room location in cabinet

Destiny white ps4. Jet engine turbine. Does not wobble, controller trigger clicks, rubber stick peeling playroom location, on top of open entertainment center

Ps4 from 6 months ago, loud only under load, wobbles, triggers don't click, but rubber starting to peel, bedroom on open center.

What does this all mean.... foxconn contract making bank with no quality control.

Hey I love my PS4 and am happy with how it's tracking along although I'd like 1080/60 to be standard the games I play are 60fps and anything else I play on my PC. The one thing I'm always frustrated at with new generations is that the last generation gets left in the wind. All digital purchases are basically left null and void as the new console isn't backwards compatible which gives publishers carte blanche to re-sell me the same game with a resolution bump. It's why I have been hesitant to buy a lot of digital games this generation in fear that I'm still going to need to hold onto the PS4 when a new console comes out.
