GameStop Says Song of the Deep Has Sold 120K Copies

Actually, executives said "above" 120,000 copies. But who knows what that actually means.

Source: GameStop ($GME) earnings call happening right now.

Edit: $GME executives say this has "exceeded" internal expectations for its first six weeks on sale. Game released on July 12th.

Edit Part 2: Of the 120K, 20% were digital. This implies that the vast majority were physical, likely driven by store marketing. "Gross Margin" (which is the difference between the revenue earned by the game and its cost) is 63%.

Drown me in the deep blue sea if old!

That sounds healthy for what the game looked like. Given it didn't take off on Steam, presumably they're actually managing to move copies from their store.

Glad to hear! I actually quite enjoyed Song of the Deep and I'm happy it paid off for Insomniac. Hopefully Gametrust continues to pump out little gems like this one.

Agreed and I think it's a key growth segment for the company, in addition to its Collectibles unit.

Interested to hear more about De-former from Ready at Dawn. And in the earnings release, $GME says there are "several titles in development releasing this year" which I found surprising yet exciting.

Would love to know if these sales numbers are considered good or not.

I enjoyed the game, but the poorly contrived trophy list didn't do it any favors.

Holy shit, the Brazilian price on Steam is fucking outrageous.
It's over double the base American price, when most games here have lower prices. First time I've heard about this game, but interest went poof.

Can't imagine the budget is very large so this is probably a mild success.

Yep just edited above, 63% margin for the game at 120K copies implies the following ROUGH estimate as I know there are varying costs across regions:

120,000 x $15 = $1.8 million in total revenue.

$1.8 million x 63% = around $1.13m in profit for $GME.

I'm not surprised physical copies greatly outweigh digital as Gamestop were pushing it so hard through their stores. (And retail still beats digital on any boxed release from what I've heard).

At 120k sales I'd imagine it's breakeven at best, given marketing costs and team size.

But you guys it didn't sell as much or as fast as No Man's Sky, so it's totally a flop :/

Fake edit: Less than Inside sales on Steam???? Double Flop.

Happy they got better numbers then expected but I thought it'd get more.

Loved the game and I hope for more of it.

Surprised to hear this, didn't think it did well for them. Was interesting seeing all the marketing, merchandise, and other stuff just for this one game.

Yeah cant be cheap also supporting 3 platforms across that 120K

On the plus side, digital is high margin and the low price perhaps could give it a long...tail

Ah, good for Insomniac. After Sunset Overdrive, I'm excited to see whatever sort of non-Ratchet games they can come up with. I'll probably snag this off PSN soon.

Just wish I knew the CE was only limited to 3000 copies. Missed my chance!

Picked up a copy though I haven't played it yet. I love Metroidvanias and generally Insomniac makes pretty fun games. Glad to hear this did somewhat well, even if the reviews were a tad ho-hum.

Yeah, when I first saw the game I was like "hey, this looks great!", but then I saw the price and "huh, this doesn't look like a 60 dollar game", and skipped. Now I've found out that it's a 15 dollar game, lol: https://www.steamprices.com/br/app/460700/song-of-the-deep

GameStop and that Panamanian company that is distributing the game here can shove it in their asses. EDIT: I just found out that it's the rebranded good old Lamatel, lol!

Where can you buy digital copies of the game?

E: Ah ok, Xbox Live, PSN, Steam ... I thought it was allround Gamestop exclusive and Gamestop has its own digital store :D silly me.

I need to snatch a physical copy the next time I go past Gamestop.

Honestly expected the game to tank. I don't care for that sort of gameplay, personally, but I'm glad to see a game with a unique main character sell well.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
Cool, I'd happily play a sequel if they care to greenlight that.

I just finished the PC version this morning (bought it recently when it was 33% off) and I really enjoyed the game. Hope it continues to get some sales.
