Discoveries possibly not being saved in No Man's Sky

I know the backlash is justified, but I kinda like the game. Come at me.

I can't stand post's like this. Who on earth do you think is out to get you if you are enjoying the game? Seriously point me towards anyone that is upset at anyone else who is enjoying the game.

Seriously, I hope you continue to enjoy it if you can. That's not what the issue is at all.

See I knew about this but why would they send location data if you are not matched into a session with someone?

I specifically hoped that they would have network captured while warping and look for a matchmaking attempt...

If you read that section of the thread I linked, gossi tested the packets in a variety of places. one of them was warping, and no matchmaking was attempted. It's not in the code base either. Hoping for it to be there still is the equivalent of putting both thumbs in your ears and saying 'la la la la I'm not listening la la la'

Because how else is the server going to know if you are next to someone else in order to start a session if the game isn't transmitting positional data of some sort? I'm pretty sure that Gossi has tested weather or not data is sent when warping and it isn't.

Hello Games barely put out a shell of a game that is still crashing on a regular basis and was an absolute mess at launch. What makes some think they can actually pull off a minor miracle and make the game that was promised in countless videos and interviews with Sean Murray via updates/patches?

If they release tools for modding to the public i am sure that the game can be somewhat fixed by people.

Er... i too enjoy what i've played of the game? It has it's charm.

What i don't enjoy is the people giving Sean a free pass for so much bullshit/lies just because (?) he is a indie developer, nervous nerd that laughs a lot.

But he's so humble and genuine

From another forum I visit, where I first learned about that reddit thread. Sorry for no link, I don't want to create opportunities for people descending there to grill people with questions and be the cause of a mini-raid or anything.

I loaded up the game on my home systems, which I've been one warp away from anyway. Went back and had a look.

Sure enough, everything is wiped, but the log is fully filled out.

The one and only thing this game had done right, it no longer has going for it. I can say NMS easily ends up in my "Top 3 most disappointing and worst buyers regrets" I've ever had. I wasted money on this thing that should have gone towards a game worthy of $60, or hell, even a collection of Walking Simulator like games (Everyone's Gone to the Rapture, Proteus etc) that are actually worthwhile experiences for the price they charge.

God I am pissed about this game now.

It seems like there are a couple things that might be erased, and there's some confusion about which is being discussed.

OP of the reddit thread and the quote above have people revisiting an earlier planet and seeing that in person, everything is un-named, but their discoveries log is still filled out.

Top post of the reddit thread along with a couple others do not revisit earlier planets, but just check their discoveries log and notice data slowly being forgotten from there.

Not sure if the two are related but it seems like both are happening.

you can't put a price on sparks
i'm sure its a bug and not by design, but it would be funny that basically all the effort you actually do make in the game was for nothing.

Wait... Discoveries are even disappearing from their logs?... Holy crap man. I mean one of the biggest if not the biggest selling points of the game is to explore and log your discoveries. I would be super bummed if I found out that my unique and interesting discoveries had disappeared that I wanted to show people. Especially if I got really creative with the naming and stuff.

Well to be fair...name a game where all the effort you make isn't for nothing.

Many games don't even upload stuff to the internet to be shared publicly, and if they do it's still just a video game that will one day be forgotten. Already happening to piles of Spore creatures people spent hundreds of hours creating.

And I said to myself "well, I will buy the digital version because I will play this game forever on my ps4"

... I never regretted a gaming purchase so hard.

Sorry, took a while. Was playing to do some more testing while the screens were copying, and got sucked into the game again (poured 50h in, still love it thank you very much, come at me bros).

Right, so this is one of the systems I was 100% certain was one of my earliest ones (the game doesn't just list them chronologically it turns out, but also "geographically").

So I just went around scanning lots of stuff and kept an eye on that list:

And just in case it was a fluke or something funny, I kept on going, eventually erasing the whole thing:

Here's what I try to be as thorough as possible and discard just random bugs or whatever:

- Rebooted the game (and PS4) a couple of times

- sat on the Discoveries list for 5 good minutes, because sometimes it takes a while to load up.

Other things to know and take note of:

- this is not a constant thing - in that sense, the thread title is inaccurate. I still have a lot of stuff saved, so the game does save it for some "time".

- it DOES NOT affect system and planet names.

- I have seen systems / planets discovered by other players, so that information is saved online at some point.

One last thing: So far, I'm up until a point where all these discoveries were made when the servers were getting absolutely hammered and were down 95% of the time. I never paid attention whether I was online or not when I uploaded that. Since you upload stuff manually and it's a one off thing, I doubt the game periodically checks or anything and so if you "upload" while servers are fucked it's too late.

So considering there are a few people who also say that they still have their first planet stuff saved, it is well possible that I'm just hitting a local limit, and that stuff was never uploaded in the first place. I'll keep an eye on it and see whether everything gets progressively lost.

LOL.

This can't be real.

Great job. Will add to OP

First they told me lack of MP meant nothing. Next they told me the universe's physics and planet rotations meant nothing. And then they told me naming ships meant nothing. Now they tell me uploading discoveries and even having them stay persistent to you means nothing. What is next?

Also, I love the whole "online services connected" thing.

depends on your definition for nothing. i dont think many games erase your progress as you progress. naming things is not a "roguelike" feature No Man's Sky has somehow made innovation on.

seems more like an issue with local saves and/or uploading to the internet rather than simply uploading. i can care less (yes i mean it this way) about actually uploading.

Now that Raist has found the smoking gun here, how long until Murray apologist invent a new reason why we are all assholes on a witch hunt?

Checked my PS4 save and the discoveries are all still there. Gone on my PC save. So this is a PC specific problem, and almost certainly not a design choice.

Things is, they genuinely dont have an excuse to not make this game what it should have been. It has sold a ridiculous amount for something made by a small dev team at 60$ price. They have made enough money to dedicate support to this game for a LONG time.

If they chose not to fix this mess and instead spend resources making paid DLC then they have no one to blame for the hostility from their customers and they deserve everything that comes their way after that.

Why are people thinking this game is making tons of money? It seems to have sold relatively well thanks to all that deceitful marketing, but it most likely will have the legs of a Dachshund puppy.

The developer doesn't deserve sales for putting crap like this out.

Every day there's a player discovers another negative about NMS.
This game really is a clusterfuck, I deleted it last week and I'll never touch it again.

Have to say the other negatives didnt really impact my own enjoyment of the game. But I really liked naming stuff, came up with a system for it and everything. There is zero chance I am going back to the game now though. That said, it does feel like its the same small cadre of posters behind every new terrible revelation ;) I mean I'm happy I know this now (not happy its a thing obviously) but the game seems like a red rag to some posters.

LOL.

This can't be real.

This isn't a defense of No Man's Sky. I'm just saying that video games are a pretty pointless endeavor generally. :p But of course they're fun.

You could say it's even more for nothing when they tell you to do one thing as a major driving force in the game and then the feature doesn't work.

I just mean...in one case, you're naming stuff for no reason because no one will ever see it. In the other, you're naming stuff hoping that some random person will get a brief chuckle, but still fairly likely that no one will ever see it, and it's not exactly a productive use of your time at the end of the day.

Just to rub salt in that wound. I got more than I paid when I traded it in a few days ago for deus ex.

Feels good man.

So NMS is a procedually erasing game.

Also thanks for the experiment!

At £50 this game has to be the greatest robbery in gaming history, I mean, it's just ludicrous this game was sold as a full price title.

The whole point of the game is to be an explorer charting the uncharted. If what you're charting isn't actually being charted, then the whole foundation of the game falls apart.

Someone needs to put this testimony on the box for the GOTY edition of No Man's Sky.

So it's a secret trailer for Uncharted 5?
