GamesRadar: 5 reasons ReCore is basically the Xbox One’s Zelda

It’s being co-developed by ex-Metroid devs

This is the big one. The one that defines all the points to follow. While Mega Man creator Keji Inafune has largely been ReCore’s public face, Inafune’s Comcept is co-developing the game with American studio Armature. Armature was founded by a director, art director, and technology engineer from Retro Studios. Retro Studios is best known for creating the Metroid Prime series for the Nintendo Gamecube and Wii. And, with its blend of open-world exploration, ability-gated traversal puzzles, and big old boss fights, Metroid has always been Nintendo’s space-Zelda. And Armature is not holding back about its heritage with regard to ReCore.

You’ll get really attached to your gadgets

One of the most affecting elements of Zelda games is the way that your growing inventory of weapons, gadgets and tools ultimately becomes part of your persona. The likes of hook-shots, boomerangs, bows and bombchus aren’t the usual incremental upgrades and tactical tweaks. There’s none of your half-arsed, ‘+4% accuracy to scoped fire’ nonsense here. They fundamentally change the way that you can interact with and access the world around you, and so they fundamentally change the way you see that world, and the way you see yourself. Zelda games aren’t just about exploration. They’re about a sense of personal growth. And so you get really attached to your gear. It becomes an inseparable part of you.

Its open-world feels like a sandy, space-Hyrule

It’s an unmistakable feeling. As Joule steps out from the stranded vehicle she’s made home, that ‘just left the starting area in Zelda’ feeling pours out of the screen in waves. The sudden burst of light and space, as the ground spreads out around you, hitherto unseen, organic shapes replacing rigid, man-made structures as all is suddenly sky and landscape. Canyon walls and hilly vantage points tease the path to even more freedom just a little further ahead. Insurmountable columns and ridges, that feel suspiciously surmountable due to their rather platform-like placings near each other. The sense that if you can work out how, there’s a route there.

It’s got the same sense of hidden-in-plain-sight discovery

Yup, the use of gear feels exactly like Zelda too. Following a brief battle with a mob of robot enemies - which, although gun-based, uses a very familiar blend of lock-on targeting, close-range combat, and evasive dashes and rolls - Joule starts exploring the immediate vicinity. She’s surrounded by the aforementioned insurmountables, but after a few moments’ investigation, their nature rapidly changes.

A man with significant Zelda experience is working on the soundtrack

Composing ReCore’s soundtrack is Chad Seiter. He might not have written Zelda’s original music - that, as is the case with many classic Nintendo soundtracks, is the work of Koji Kondo - but he has done the next-best thing. As well as writing several game scores and the music for a huge number of movies, he arranged the music for Nintendo’s ongoing, live Zelda concert tour, entitled Symphony of the Goddess.
More at the link. Defo setting the bar high for the game with all these kinds of articles.

Loving the look of the game, but christ - that headline.

'7 Loose Reasons Why Scalebound is the Dark Souls of Xbox One Exclusives'

Darksiders was pretty entertaining. But the game so shamelessly aped the Zelda formula it was kinda hard to screw it up.

That's exactly what made Darksiders 1 so great. It just copy and pasted Zelda and changed the world/characters. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel.

"The big one" is because it's developed by people who used to make Metroid games?

... Why wouldn't you compare it to Metroid instead then?

To be fair, though, I doubt anyone enjoys writting Top X lists like that. It's pure click bait and as a writer you know it.

Don't compare your new IP to Zelda. Don't do it. You'll end up crushing everyone's expectations.

And the first point makes absolutely no sense. These devs likely have no experience whatsoever in developing Zelda games. The fuck?

That said, the fact that this game is being developed by ex-Retro employees does instill confidence that it's going to be a good game at least.

I always wonder whether such Previews/articles are paid for.

I mean for every "bigger" game, no matter how bad it will be in the end, we have similar articles ala "Why you should look forward to Game ABC" or "Things you didnt know about Game XYZ that will blow your mind."
Then when the reviews hit it might actually be a mediocre game or even worse.

Let's not forget that Metroid Prime was in incredibly rough shape before Nintendo really stepped in and it moved it to its correct course. The old Retro guys really shouldn't be some selling point for the game. It's obvious a lot of talent was not lost when Tropical Freeze exists.

I'm sure they have the talent to do something good but let's not go around saying it'll be up there with Zelda, or Megaman or whatever, or anything really for that matter.

The answer is, as always, a lot easier:
Top lists bring clicks. Previews bring clicks. You don't get to see the bad parts of a game during previews and if you do you can easily handwaive the criticism by saying it will be fixed for the finished game.

Also, just want to say: I played Recore during gamescom and it was my third favorite game of the whole convention. Had no expectations before but had an amazing time playing it. This could be a really, really great game.

Yeah. I wasnt talking about ReCore, but in general. Seems a lot of bigger games always get good previews and in the end might still be mediocre or bad games.

Metroid Prime was in a rough shape because the studio was insanely mismanaged, handling more projects than they could possibly chew while its CEO did all sorts of weird shit. Doesn't mean that the leads working on Prime weren't incredibly talented or competent.

Tropical Freeze being a great game also says nothing about the quality of Armature's personel. A studio can lose talent and still attract new talent (and from what I remember from Shiggy's linkedin stalking, almost none of DKCR's leads were still working at Retro by the time development in Tropical Freeze progressed).

Armature's whole concept (being the American Mistwalker, sort of) absolutely didn't work out, though, and they seem to have been struggling to make the transitition to a traditional studio. Will be very interesting to see if Recore will be a success for them.

Wait. One of the biggest reasons it's like Zelda is because it's made by some of the people who made Metroid?

What in the actual fuck?

I know what you mean but that's simply down to how previews work. A publisher/developer decides exactly what you are going to see and is often there, explaining stuff to you while playing a Preview Build. They polish that part of the game and have an obvious interest in this part being the best part of the game, eliminating any problems the rest of the game may suffers from.

That's why many outlets don't do previews any more. They are just not very helpful - however, people like reading them. Just as much as people like reading Top Lists, so journalists obviously keep doing them.

I wish they would stop comparing it to Zelda.

The game looks like a great buy, but to put it on that pedestal is crazy.

Well i dont get how nintendo didnt do any deal with armature for a game like this. Specially with a known Japanese developer attached to it and it looks good.

Damn, they way people are quietly hyping this game, makes me feel this better be the second coming of Christ.

I am interested in this game, but until Microsoft show people more, then I will take a wait and see approach.

If this games is all worlds of great, then I expect a review to be out Labor Day (in U.S.) weekend to get people hyped.

So we will see soon.

What would be ironic is if by a miracle THIS IS SOMETHING AS GOOD AS ZELDA, and is Sony's PSP 2 is real, and both appear in September. While I don't think it diminishes NX announcement but it certainly steals some thunder from it.

If Sony's psp2 was real would already be able to buy it from my local Cexstore.

Lots of games over the years have been compared to zelda......they didn't turn out so well.

Beyond Good and Evil
Darksiders 1 & 2
Okami

All roughly follow a similar template to OOT, they are all great games in their own rights.

He's heard it.
