Possible new Duke Nukem game in the works?

I enjoyed Duke Nukem Forever enough that I played it through 3 times. I'm interested in what they have to announce, but I don't trust Gearbox any more.

I thought it was ok, but the performance on PS3 was just ridiculous. They cleary never programmed for the Cell before :D
The loading times alone were in the minutes if I remember correctly.

The PS3 was the better of the console versions actually. The game got poorer reviews than it should have because the idiots at 2K gave the 360 version to reviewers and that was one big pile of shit.

Loading times were a big issue on all platforms, even the PC version takes like 10 seconds which is ridiculous on modern machines. Consoles have it the worst though.

But better for consumers. And the PS3 performance was also bad and the game was only enjoyable for die-hard Duke 3D fans imo.
There's no place for such a game in the current AAA-market.

I don't know why, but I got some Duke vibes when playing DooM4

It's probably closer to Duke 3D than anything else we've gotten in the past decade and a half. Deliciously vertical too.

Hell, I'd like to consider myself a die-hard 3D fan, and though I put myself through one playthrough of Forever, I don't like it one bit. Gameplay was all wrong, humor was all wrong, Duke was exceptionally douchey, and that whole world was ugly. The only part I remember being surprisingly all right was the Duke Burger section.

Same here. Doom 4 had a very distinct "throwback" style reminiscent of the old school shooters, Duke definitely among them.

If they do to Duke what iD did to Doom, I'd be a very, very happy man.

that puzzling face
If one ever does happen, I hope that whoever is in charge understands what made 3D great and looks to something like Doom or Wolfenstein TNO as inspiration for updating a classic series.

Yeah, Duke Nukem with character development.

Imagine a Duke Nukem game where halfway through the game, while faced with some strong moral quandaries he realizes what a shithead he is and seeks to make amends with all his acquaintances like the President of Earth and Flo over at the strip club.

A very self-aware narrative.

I'd buy it just for the hilarity

Instead of making a new AAA game they should make new Duke 3D levels/expansions. I'd love to play new stuff in that engine.

I wish they'd at least add new weapons and enemies to the expansion.
It would help make the whole thing feel a lot fresher instead of just reusing the old assets for the billionth time. We've seen the old weapons and monsters and level types a trillion times before. I mean there are millions of new Duke 3D levels out there if that's what you want.

The treatment of other developers, such as the guys who worked on the Duke3D remake and one of the programmers for Megaton Edition killed any remaining respect I had for Gearbox, which was already low after Colonial Marines.

That's what they're rumored to have done. Gearbox supposedly got most of the original 3dr developers to work on episodes/levels. Lee Jackson has apparently done new music. Level Lord new maps, etc. I'll be happy with that but would still like a proper updated Duke Nukem game preferably using the Unreal Engine 4.

It looks like that is what they're doing. If you check out the leaked screenshots on page 3 you can see a modified freezethrower that seems to be setting enemies on fire so it looks like they already have a flamethrower so far, hopefully there are additional new weapons. Also looks like new textures and new skyboxes as well so it's entirely possible that these new levels will be thematically, very different than any official maps/usermade maps we've had for years. The unique level design of Build Engine games are why I love them so much and seeing that this expansion aims to take place all over the world is such a brilliant idea as my favorite levels were the ones that were the most diverse and felt like real places you could visit in real life thanks to how much the level designers paid attention to the little details that add to immersion.

I don't really count reusing a old weapon and adding flames as a new weapon though, it just feels lazy. I was talking about actual newly created monsters and weapons not repurposed old ones.

That's definitely a fair point, I guess the reason I'm psyched for the flamethrower is that I see it as a bit of an homage to the idea that the game was originally going to have a flamethrower but it was cut before release. For all I know there could be more enemies/weapons that we just haven't seen yet so maybe :D

If it's world tour I'm just hoping to buy it as soon as the countdown reaches 0.

If it's something like doom 2016 i'm not interested.

The only Gearbox game I have is Halo: Combat Evolved for PC. That's the only time I ever really paid attention to them at all, and even that port was kind of shitty when it came out (way too performance heavy at launch and for a few years considering the graphics).

Maybe they can do a PC satire, like this TRANSformers video. Is something that make sense for the character in the current time.

So... not making fun of trans people is considered Political Correctness?

EDIT: My idea would be more self-flaggelating humor, portraying Duke as out-of-touch with little understanding of how the world works and shows how his old ways just aren't cool anymore. Essentially a meta parody.

My idea has been for a while that Duke very clearly needs to earn back some respect. I'm fine if they don't want to fuck directly with his character, but they need to put him in a world that has moved on from his antics. He doesn't have money, his own casinos, and certainly no lady friends. Basically, it's like a Metroid game -- all his powers are gone, and he needs to go on a mission to reacquire those things.

How does he do it? By just being Duke, killing aliens, and saving the world, as usual -- but it all needs to be done from the perspective of someone who has something to prove. Duke is a narcissist who doesn't love anyone but himself and only kills to *get* something in return; so those chips need to be off the table before people can view him as a hero doing something actually selfless.

Maybe then, in 2016 and beyond, he'll earn the respect of the player controlling him.

edit: The countdown ends in 6 hours and 11 minutes, apparently.

If anyone from Gearbox is perusing the threads, you should take note of this.

The site is going live in 44 minutes. Is this when the stream is too?

Yep. I guess the Duke Nukem site with the countdown will have all the pertinent details, but the panel might offer a few interesting tidbits, since Jon St. John and Gearbox staff are there. Maybe Alan Blum will make an appearance?

I wonder if the enigmatic George B is involved with the re-release?

Sounds good! Hail to the king baby!

The site is down for me now post-countdown.

Just like Duke to build up anticipation over a long period of time and let you down.

The countdown is over and NOTHING.

They're either getting slammed/having tech difficulties or trolled the hell out of everyone.

WTF?

I should start drinking, this might make more sense. Do many streams devolve into Open Mic nights?

Are they trying to outdo the Sonic 25th Anniversary Stream?
