Both the game and cover look beautiful. It would be cool if we get to fight robot pliosaurus-like creatures under water.

9/10 cover

Why is it most video games have amazing art showcases but really bad box art?

Is there evidence that shows that shitty box art sells the game? Talking about generic standing man that is on 90% of VG covers.

Yes. They do this because their market research group tells them this will be the best.

Sometimes they are right. Sometimes they are wrong. But nobody wants to make big decisions and be wrong about them so they often defer to something safe and market research is the ultimate safe thing.

It doesn't really matter what gets GotY next year to me. I'm just considering all the games hitting 2017 and being of high quality. It would make 2017 a year to remember.

Nier:Automata will challange GAF GOTY, maybe Scalebound too.
But ya, Persona 5 will take it no doubt.
Nier Automata looks like a budget game looks rough and needs alot of good polish, i don't see that as a GOTY contender.

Looks like it has decent budget to me. Much more than the majority of JRPGs or Platinum games. Are Souls games budget games?
It doesn't look like it has alot of areas from what i've seen or that big, the fight with the dress boss was weak, also no impact or any signs of damage just fancy moves of the two characters etc im not impressed, i finished the first one and that was terrible along with Drakengard. Yoko Taro games are pretty meh and in the gameplay department is dissapointing coming from Platinum aswell, flashy but not great. Though i do have to give it credit for running at 60fps yeah

You realize they are addressing most of their complaints and called them out themselves after the E3 boss showing... geez games are in development and change greatly from early versions to later ones.

It's the first Yoko Taro game with Platinum

Does that make sense if the most of the games do this regardless? You can't get accurate data like that.

Here is the details from the cover story. I'll put it all in spoiler tags for now for those who don't want to know details

-Guerrilla wanted to make a game that's "Beautiful in a majestic way" instead of the grit of Killzone. They wanted to create a world you wanted to be in, instead of escape from.
-Work on Horizon began in 2010
- Horizon has its own engine. Not the same as Shadowfall
- GI saw settings in desert, arctic, and temperate environments. Saw machines that will hide in the water.
- Guerrilla promises why the world got this way will be answered. Also say "this is a sci-fi game and that they won't depend on fantasy at any point.
- The various tribes are radically different including how they feel about the machines. Some of them believe the machines becoming more violent is punishment from the gods.
- You aren't recruiting different tribes to your cause but they will sell you different gear and have their own side quests and storylines
- Aloy is most concerned with finding her origin, and most importantly who her mother was
- She has been raised in the Nora Tribe, but the tribe completely ignores her existence. For reasons she doesn't know they seem to shun her.
- The Nora are ruled by women, Matriarchs
- Aloy was raised by another outcast named Rost, who didn't do it of his own will. The Tribe forced him
- Rost is stern and overprotective but only wants the best for Aloy / Father figure
- There are playable flashbacks of Aloy's childhood
- There are Hunter Trials which are essentially Big Game Hunts / Hunter's Guild
- A flying enemy called a d Glinthawk can throw ice bombs
There are "Corruption Zones" which are areas of the map filled with dangerous enemies. Some of the biggest fights in the game can be found in these zones
- There are lots of sidequests but don't expect them to be as expansive as The Witcher
- Screenshots show a large Hermit Crab type enemy.

I'm not finished with the article yet but these are some of the highlights. Tons more so I recommend reading it. Screenshots are absolutely insane looking. I may add more details when I'm finished

-There are lots of sidequests but don't expect them to be as expansive as The Witcher

That's disappointing, like why not? budget seems just as big so how come CDP can put such awesome side quests in their game and GG can't?

I hope it won't feel like fetch after fetch.

Thanks for the info Obliterator. Hmm, hopefully they don't explain the existence of robot dinos in ham fisted way. On the other hand, why not make killer robots look like dinosaurs? I would.

Game looks amazing though. Like a decent step up from Witcher 3.

Well, "not as expansive as Witcher 3" doesn't mean not expansive at all. It just won't be as expansive as Witcher 3. That could still leave it in the same ballpark.

Just finished. A last couple details

- GI was surprised at the depth of the game, how intelligent the AI is, and how fluid the controls are
- You can craft different outfits to change Aloy's appearance
- A screenshot shows Aloy wearing a metal chest piece, quite a bit different than her normal "animal skins" look
- Aloy has 3 different skill trees that you can put level up points into. They are Prowler (Stealth), Brave (Damage focus), and Forager (Resource Gathering)
- Aloy can find modifications when she defeats enemies that can be slotted into her weapons and armor. These affect things such as stats and give buffs

And again the screens are insane. This games visuals are crazy

Agreed. Also the
playable child Aloy stuff
has pretty big cringe potential. I do like the sound of the different tribes though and especcially the matriarchal one sounds cool.

Wow Horizon has been in development for nearly
7
years, it must be one huge project, even for AAA standard!

show us some
arctic area
footage already :(

- There are playable flashbacks of Aloy's childhood

wasn't FF Vursus XIII supposed to have those, but not anymore? anyways I really like the sound of it.

Whoa they've been working on this even longer than I thought. What's the last game that took this much time without getting caught in development hell.

Just keep in mind, there was a pre-development period where they weren't going all in on development yet. I imagine that would have been about 2-3 years off that 7 year period. Maybe less but still. It wasn't 7 consistent years of dedicated development.

Either way, yeah, it is certainly a big budget AAA game without a doubt.

Hopefully it turns out better in quality and sales figures than a lot of Sony's other first party new IPs this generation. They could really use a massive hit.
