Persona Community Thread |OT9| SPOILER TAGS OR DIE

There is pretty much no way you can spin Aigis existing in school in a way where she goes unnoticed by her peers. Her striking blond hair and blue eyes aside, she has a robotic face. Her skin is synthetic. Her joints stick out. Her hands are entirely metallic. Her legs are metallic. Gym class is a wash. Her initial personality prevents her from properly interacting with humans. Che cosa???

This isn't a case of the school populace being too stupid, and it can't be solved by the Kiriji group's infinite money; It's a contrivance. A contrivance that I don't personally mind, but a contrivance nonetheless. I'm surprised people are willing to go to bat for it.

Yeah, I just let it go, the game seems to play off the school environment being full of teachers who wouldn't have passed a single step in getting their teaching credentials

I also don't mind because Aigis is cute and I like more screentime

---

The PSO2 x Persona 5 collab is way too late. If it were a little while ago there'd be more chance at seeing P3 and P4 items in there too ;_;

the big "SPOILER" in all caps in the community thread OT makes me sweat a little bit when I click into this thread and see it up there in the corner of my eye. I keep thinking i'm in the spoiler thread.

Everything turned into a spoiler thread. It's why I deactivated avatars - you know someone will take that crazy endgame Persona and decide to paste it all over the internet.

Important information for those curious:

The protagonist is called Akira Kurusu in the manga. Since P5's going forward knowing it's going to be heavily merchandised and more spinoffs, I'm guessing this name will probably the one used in other media.

Source: http://personacentral.com/persona-5-manga-started-publication/

I'm probably going to borrow that last name. I've become attached to the first name I picked earlier
and I can't use Akira without associating it with a fan character of mine >>;

You're worried about that?

I'm scared a bunch of people will start running around with avatars spoiling
who the "traitor" is

I understand that this is unfeasible oh god another 152 days...

Yeah. I'd avoid spoilers if I actually understood Japanese and was importing....but I'm not gonna avoid them for five months.

I'm worried about pretty much anything at this point. Personas and other visual stuff make me extra worried though since I want to discover that by myself.

Youtube has turned against us.... Not getting spoiled might just be near impossible for us. Until then... though...

All YT seems to recommend me these days is videos relating to The Sims so I should be safe if I never look up or watch anything Persona for the next five months.

I might have to unsub from JohneAwesome. He's a great Youtuber who loves Persona. I think he just dropped the bomb that he will be putting up P5 videos and he does actually know Japanese too.

Kinda weird but Futaba has gone from my favourite to least favorite party member, I think.

Note: this is not on any recent spoilers

For me, I went from "How am I supposed to decide among these on a favorite?!?!?!" to "Ann can have my heart and my soul" :p

No spoilers in my judgment either.

Goddammit I'm weak. I looked up some big spoilers.

Agh. It took me less than a freakin' day. I still remember everything from SMT4: Final.

Why would you do that?
You are purposefully diminishing the enjoyment you'll get out of the game, don't do that yourself.
Some of you are acting like it's literally impossible to avoid spoilers until the western release, let's not go crazy here.

The launch stream seems to have been neat going by Persona Central's tweets.

I'm sure I recently read somewhere that spoiling yourself actually heightens your enjoyment of a story, but that might differ from person to person.

Yeah. It varies. I'd have personally rather gone in blind, but I'd also like to discuss Persona with other people over the next months, so I figure I'll watch streams and finally play it myself once it gets over here.

Just in case you ever wondered how realistic Ann's dilemma is: Here is a short (spoiler-free) essay that discusses Ann's ethnicity and its social ramifications in Japan based on pre-release media.

Reading this reminded me of my attempt to uncover (Major P4 spoilers)
Adachi's actual chances of him surviving his trial in court
and how I am too lazy to put the results of my "research" into a coherent text.

The comparison to Ariana Miyamoto is outright laughable (it should be extremely, extremely obvious why there was controversy around her and not the others). They were right about this though:
The Japanese general public is one thing, but what about the high schoolers? Would Japanese teenagers really reject someone with foreign characteristics? In my experience as a Japanese high school English teacher? Highly unlikely. Though my high school was never privy to foreign exchange students during my tenure, if I had to venture a guess based on the handful of students I regularly interacted with,

It's the main reason why i'm hesitant on Anne's character setup. Her "loneliness" feels incredibly contrived. We'll find out in February at least.

I dunno. I could see it happening. I don't think it's contrived in the slightest. Bullying in Japanese schools is a huge thing. It's a bit weirder in Tokyo maybe, but someone with bright blonde hair, feeling like an outsider... I'll ask a few friends, I suppose.

My school had a few Sri Lanken and South American kids there and they were mostly okay I think, but they either mostly blended in or had a pretty strong force of charisma.

I feel it's important to say that in Japan if you're not purely racially Japanese you're always going to be the other though. It's not like Australia or America or another pluralistic society where you can, quite definitely and with no hint of irony, claim to be Australian or American even though you've black hair and asian features or whatever. If you've even a drop of foreign blood you're ハーフ, haafu. Hell, even if you're fully Japanese but you've come back from overseas you're 日系人, nikkeijin, and you might be able to pass but it's always going to be brought up that you're not straight up Japanese. It's not even deliberate or callous or whatever, it's not an intentional thing, it's just the way the language and the society works.

I'm just casually listening to a stream of P5 and there's a LOT of voice acting in this game, even if a lot of it is short clips.

No wonder the English version is taking so long...

For what it's worth, I also suspect it also didn't get seriously started until #FE was finished. Not because of Atlus USA, but because they probably only really started getting material to work on around that time.

For all we know, the localization could end up getting delayed if set-backs happen.

There's a saying in Japan. It goes something like this:

(色の白いは七難隠す) which translates to “white skin covers the seven flaws"

It's a proverb that sums up just how much Japanese society values beautiful white skin.

Let me be clear. I am not refuting the possibility of Anne being bullied. I'm refuting the idea that Anne would be ostracized by her peers because her appearance. Because it's total bullshit. She is 3/4th's Japanese with blond hair and blue eyes. These are traits that are highly, highly valued in In Japan.

Half-Japanese, half-white children are automatically put on a pedestal. They are regarded as the most beautiful babies and are fawned over by family, friends and neighbors alike. The more “white” a child looks the better, since it will be all the more mysterious and foreign.

Some Japanese friends of mine have told me upfront: “I want to marry a white guy just to have half children.”

Some even go as far to say, “I don’t even need to marry the guy. If he’ll just impregnate me with a beautiful baby, then he can go his separate ways and I’ll find a Japanese husband later. That would save a lot of trouble.”

So yes until the game proves otherwise, the set up is contrived. Don't get cute with me, game!

While I certainly didn't work in schools with blonde-haired blue-eyed wonders walking around, I think I have more relevant direct experience here than yet another blog.

It might certainly be - indeed, it is that white-descending half-Japanese are thought of as desirable by adults. But kids? Kids will latch onto any distinguishing feature and, if they don't like you, they're going to use it in any way they can.

Furthermore, even if it's not straight out bullying, never underestimate the power of seemingly positive ostracization. You might say that she's looked up to, or thought of as unique - but that's nothing different than being "exotic" or, perhaps to put it another way, "so well spoken"!

Any plot spoilers in the P5 trophy list? Like Persona 4 Golden had a bunch of save
& even one apprehend
"insert character name here" ones. I don't care about gameplay spoilers so anyone know if they're safe to look at?

All im gonna say is that
damn this game is good
(not a spoiler)

If it's not a spoiler, why do that?

You don't need to hide general impressions behind spoiler tags. =P

Yes there are spoilers, like who is the ultimate protagonist persona in p5.

Not bad Jintor, I didn't think you had it in you. But there's a flaw in your reasoning:

We aren't dealing with kids, we're dealing with teens. Flawed, vapid, superficial teens who have most certainly buy into the "white is great & exotic" mindset that is pervasive throughout Japanese media. And while i'll give you that positive ostracization is a thing, Anne explicitly mentions that people stay away from her. And there's the rub. What you're saying definitely applies to people who aren't fully Japanese. I fully buy that Japanese teens would ostracize, ignore and even bully people who don't fit the bill. But. This doesn't apply to people who are half Japanese and half White (or in Anne's case, 3/4ths Japanese).

Why is it so difficult to be Hafu in Japan? Japanese society is of one nation, one language and one culture. There is a saying: “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.” And Hafu children are often bullied in school just because they are different.

The question than arises as to whether Eurasian Hafu children are special and are not discriminated against in Japanese school. Typical Eurasian Hafu children are admired for their “exotic” Eurasian look, while Hafu Asians like myself are looked down upon as not being fully Japanese.

Pretty open and shut if you ask me. So unless you also spent a significant time teaching highschoolers, I think you know about as much as these "blogs" (and there are many that corroborate what i'm saying)
