You know, March 26th is the last Sunday in the month, my birthday, and most importantly the (11th) anniversary of the day my wife and I met. So I'm putting my money on that date.

Pokémon X & Y came out globally on Saturday October 12th 2013

The Pokémon Red & Blue 2DSs in Japan & Europe, and the New 3DS in America came out on Saturday February 27th 2016


There are a fair few other examples I can come up with but since I deal with Pokémon these are the top of my head. It's rare but not unprecedented.

(just curious) For the Pokemon 2DS the reason was to make it exactly 20 years after the release of the original systems, for the games it's the global launch. The 3DS XL European release date was on a Saturday, July 28th 2012. It was also simultaneous to the Japanese release.

So there's really nothing systematic behind this. If they have enough stock ready and are in the right mood, they can go for a global release on a Saturday. Otherwise they opt for their usual Friday date.

Nintendo aren't really conforming to the (Proper, sensible and downright better) Friday release schedule anymore, especially if it's a worldwide launch.

Nintendo 3DS XL and 2DS send their regards!

Nintendo 3DS arrived also on Friday. This is about new consoles, not revisions :/ Anyways, 3DS XL was sold in all stores from Spain and other countries on Friday -I bought one this day and was available everywhere because Nintendo took out the embargo.
