Assuming this is Amazon Seattle's game, their job postings described it as:

Amazon Seattle - Creative Director said:
At Amazon our goal is to develop ground-breaking PC games that become cultural touchstones, redefine the boundaries of player experience, and change the way the world sees digital entertainment. Join us and you’ll have the power of Twitch, Amazon Web Services, and the entire Amazon ecosystem to help shape the future of games. You’ll work alongside talented industry veterans, including key contributors from titles like: Half Life 2, Left for Dead, Thief, System Shock 2, Age of Empires, Shadow of Mordor, Guild Wars, The Last of Us, Gears of War, Forza, Bioshock, and Sunset Overdrive.

...

You’ll be sharing your hard-earned knowledge while working within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team of designers, artists, and programmers developing AAA, third-person, competitive, melee-action game.

“I am not wicked. You are just weak.”

Judging by the writing, designs, corporate goals, and of course job postings, it's presumably a Hero Shooter Slasher.

The "PlayBreakway" moniker also suggests it's probably f2p.

I'm also guessing that Double Helix's new game will unveil at the same event given they were supposed to unveil it this year and that's Twitchcon, but you never know.

Update:

They'll also be showing off some of their other games, but not in as much detail: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/amazon-game-studios-unboxing-afterparty-registration-27612497724

Join us at 6:00 PM (doors at 5:30 PM) on September 29, 2016, at the San Diego Symphony Hall to see, play, celebrate, and kick off TwitchCon right! Here’s what you can expect:
- An introduction to Amazon Game Studios, what we’re about and what we’re making
- A glimpse of some of the games we’re working on
- A deep dive into the first game we’re putting in gamers’ hands

- An afterparty with free food, drinks, and entertainment
We hope you’ll join us for our Unboxing and beyond.

Breakaway...sounds like a minecraft like game.

I hope they wouldn't waste all that talent on something like that.

edit: saw the description. Sounds cool.

You can tell Amazon is new to this industry when their first notable project is a AAA F2P game.

I hope it does well but I'm already doubting it will. But Amazon has enough cash that it shouldn't be a big deal.

PC only and "competitive" means it's definitely not for me but I hope it ends up doing well and paving the way for other narrative based games for multiple platforms.

Considering they bought Double Helix and made a bunch of high profile hires so long ago I am really curious to see what they release and hopefully it will speak to what their greater ambitions in the gaming space are.

It's confirmed they'll be showing other games as well, though Breakaway is the only game getting a deep dive: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/amazon-game-studios-unboxing-afterparty-registration-27612497724

Based on the teaser images:

It's a villain (not hero, get it?) shooter.

The two characters being teased are

  1. Loki
  2. Wicked Witch of the East

I was wondering what was up with their gaming initiative.
They've stopped making exclusive titles for the Fire TV right?

What is the context of "AAA" here? Does it mean this is a $60 game? Does it mean a hundred or more people worked on it? Does the game have a long campaign? Is there a multiplayer suite? Does it just mean "you should pay attention to this game"?

Free 2 Play? Not for me then, but I welcome Amazon to the industry hoppe they do some good single player or story driven experiences too.

More developers are always welcome.

The budget is large.

... That seems rather plausible.

Will be interesting to see how they can make gameplay that revolves around buying more things from Amazon.

The budget is large.

Not just that but it has tons of industry veterans working on it. A minimum of 6 people got poached from ArenaNet to make this. People from Valve and Microsoft, too. Amazon has a lot to prove here so they're going to come out swinging. They didn't develop a new engine and farm so much talent to make the same thing everyone else is.

Probably not an indication either way but are Amazon focusing on PC exclusively for now?

I know they were pushing on Mobile/Amazon App Store at one point but repositioned.

That's interesting. I wonder if they'll make any use of third party storefronts, I definitely don't think they have to, especially for F2P games.
Amazon basically views their platform as Twitch and is focusing on the types of games that do well there.

Anyone wanna name the devs working on this based on that quote?

They hired a bunch of MMO devs from ArenaNet, including the former game director for GW2 Colin Johanson. Though he did just get hired recently, so he might be working on a project further out.

I'm really curious to see what they're working on.

LOL I have a bad feeling about this.I'm anticipating the worst.

The game they're teasing looks like it could be an RPG of sorts.

I wonder why they're only making PC games considering they are a retailer.

What if they end up using Twitch and their cloud to launch something similar to Gakai/OnLive/PlayStation Now? The PC in that case makes absolute sense and it would be a low cost of entry targeting the widest consumer base. Just thinking.
