Michael Pachter says "PC Gamers are like Racists"

AAA has less market penetration into the PC market where smaller publishers can compete on closer to equal footing. Financial analysis (Pachter's livelihood) is more difficult when there's far more than just a few big players holding all the cards.

Closed platform markets, especially when more marketing is spent on them, are inherently simpler to analyze.

So he made this quote because his livelihood depended on it and he wasn't totally just being absurd and and over the top just because.

Nice analysis 10/10.

I don't buy the arrogance thing at all. I have a good gaming PC but I have a PS4 and Xbox One. Also I am getting a PS4 Pro, though I might sell my Xbox. Why?
Well, there are exclusive games on PS4 that will not be on PC. Not many but there are. Also a lot of my friends play on PS4. Xbox games are coming to PC like Horizon 3 and though there may be some exclusives generally there's little reason to keep an Xbox anymore.
I'm quite happy with these choices though I will say I am getting a little tired of gaming and will probably reduce the amount of time I waste on games in the near future.

No.

Racism is hatred. A passion for good performance will naturally lead to less tolerance for bad performance. Being less tolerant about something =/= hatred for that thing. For example, athletes are less tolerant of foods and treats that are high in calories. Does that mean that athletes hate McDonald's, chocolate, and pizza? Nope.

You could have saved time by only typing "I'm not racist, but"

I get what he's talking about, the "master race" kind of people but I think most of that is in jest.

Sure there's a small minority, who are mostly the way they are out of bitterness of seeing some of them favourite franchises "streamlined", but again it seems to be a minority. The same kind of fanboys you see who are convinced Xbox/PlayStation or Wii U is the best console ever and everything else is garbage.

Sounds about right to me. Also makes sense that the people who will go apeshit and throw temper tantrums over this comment are probably also the people who freak out any time Pach is wrong about something.

Just finished playing some amazing PC games and figured this was one of those threads where you show off your gaming setup.

This is mine.

Why would the people annoyed by this (mostly PC gamers) freak out about his predictions that are entirely console based? PC gamers don't make up his audience.

I just figure they both fall into the same category of chronic over-reactors who follow gaming/tech news,

You don't think being compared to a racist warrants a reaction? Lets not pretend that people don't shit their pants over any disparagement of console gamers or their favourite games.

Not All PC Gamers! They are many good pc gamers than bad ones why lump them all into one category!
/s

I understand what hes saying of course there are some PC gamers that arent all my rig has to be x and 60fps standard on everything!

But comparing it to a perverse social dynamic such as racism kind of dilutes the message. and isnt the best way to convey the thought. Could have just said some pc gamers act like snobs and are intolerant of anything but PC.

Not a bad set-up, not enough colors on your keyboard or tower though. I think it's all in the bright, contrasting colors of a case.

Here's mine:

Obviously being fallacious, but shame some sight gags people do... For those curious the source of this is one of those "gag image" sites on the internet, so not played to be serious, but I would say distasteful. But can I judge since I found it by literally googling "racist pc"? I also hope the joke isn't too distasteful, I debated making this joke response.

Off-topic a bit, but I just find mice in general adorable.

On-topic, I think while it's good to poke fun at self sometimes, I find people who do the usual "he kind of has a point," type of posts to be missing the point. Being in disagreement of a vocal minority doesn't justify a purposely sweeping statement you only partially agree with due to a small number of people, it's the judgement of a few to represent a whole which ignorance often stems from.

No, I don't think what is clearly a tongue-in-cheek remark warrants a reaction; I fully expect the people who cannot differentiate between a tongue-in-cheek remark and a serious slur to get their panties in a twist.

What Pachter needs to understand is that such a tiny portion of PC gamers have that 'elitest' mentality. Those guys are just as bad as console diehards, of whom are also a small percentage. I love my PS4 (Soon to be Pro) and my PC, but I don't think I am better because I play on a PC. It's such a ridiculous statement for him to make.

The PC master race is strong with this one.

The analogy is awful and Pachter is just about the worst messenger but I don't know how a lot of people on here can say with a straight face that they don't see people rush to promote the virtues of their platform of choice and/or denigrate consoles on this site. It's not just secluded to reddit or elsewhere. It also doesn't always come packaged in over the top 'master race' talk either. There's elements of it happening in this thread.

Fanboyism has always been bad but PC evangelism has never been higher than it is right now. So much discussion centered around games right now is about how and where you play games instead of the actual games and that to me is just shitty.

Yep i agree lmao. Certain PC Gamers are pretty much gaming jehovah witnesses.

Was referring to the part about knowing whether PC Gamers use multiple consoles in the real world like they seemingly do on GAF.

Aka his job.

And where do you think he'd get access to that information? Internet surveys? PC owners don't fill out registration cards with "what consoles do you own?" questions on them. PC sales don't get reported in ways that are easy to track - particularly gaming PCs which are often hand built. Heck, the largest chunk of PC gaming marketshare is owned by a privately held company that has no obligation to provide him with any information whatsoever. Pachter screws up enough with his predictions in the console space which is far easier to quantify.

To pretend like this doesn't apply to console players is just terribly ignorant.

A tongue in cheek remark that you claimed sounded about right. If you can agree with it then others can disagree. The level of panty twisting involved is subjective. To me it sounds like you're all twisted up but to you it probably sounds like I am. Biases are funny like that.

Off topic but what does ignoring do in this forum? Does it hide posts?

Ignoring a user will hide replies/topics made by a user. Good for some cases, but can make you miss out part of discussion (though you'll still see replies to said ignored user, I believe).

I generally don't try to ignore anyone unless I really think there's nothing they can say which I will ever want to see (I think I've only ignored one user in all of my time on GAF).

I would call someone comparing a market segment to racists in the most idiotic way possible chronic over-reacting. Crazy I know!

None of this is surprising, given that it follows Michael's usual pattern of writing off anything in the games industry he is incapable of analysing (so, almost everything except parts of the AAA console market) in the most bombastic way possible. Although maybe in the current climate around racism in the US he could have been somewhat less of an ignorant idiot. Guess not!

He speaks, and we freak
I've never used the word "twit" in my life.

I absolutely used the term racist, but only upon being questioned repeatedly about what I meant when I called PC gamers insular.

The reporting here was irresponsible. I've done 6000 interviews over the last 15 years (we're required to log them), and somehow, have been able to hide my bigoted side until today . . . I'm not sure what the "reporter" was trying to do, other than stir the pot. Yes, I said that the PS4 Pro probably wouldn't appeal to PC gamers, The rest is just silly.

Especially because the point he's making is why they won't buy a PS4Pro.

Literally nothing about whatever head-canon people going "yeah, Pc gamers are the worst. Like actual racists" are contorting their world views to fit.

People who think their existing PC means they don't need to buy a PS4Pro are (as bad as) racists is the stance you're nodding and going "dude has a point" to.
