Earth Defense Force 5's enemies are literally called “Immigrants"

Story said:
It started in Japan, 2022. In the outskirts of Kanto, just a short distance from an urban area, the Earth Defense Force had built their base on the wasteland beyond the mountains.

If you look at only the the ground facilities, the base does not appear to be of small scale, but underground they have built a large storage warehouse. Within it, in what would seem unbecoming of peaceful Japan, a large amount of weapons, ammunition, and state-of-the-art artillery have been brought in. Just the other day, dozens of battle-use walker vehicles known as a Combat Frames were transported in by air.

But the base had a problem. Nearby townspeople revolted regarding its excessive possession of weapons. A protest movement was in the process of breaking out. For that reason, the public relations department hosted an event every month. Through allowing visitors and such, it began to focus on interactions with the townspeople. Currently, there are no enemies to use the base’s weapons on… What was needed, more than strengthening military power, was the townspeople’s understanding. But at that time, the fate of the world was about to significantly change.

Suddenly, a group of spaceships appeared and launched an attack…

The threat was a first-time encounter for mankind. They are called “Immigrants.”

Moreover, a giant insect-type monster entered the Earth Defense Force Base built as far as deep underground. And in large numbers. The Earth Defense Force began to fight back.

This is not a drill. This reality called a nightmare has finally begun.

The link also shows the specific alien types- the Frogmen are called "Colonist".

Colonist said:
A humanoid-type alien. Disregarding its large build, it has an appearance very similar to the human race, and is a life form that possesses several abilities. From the fact that it is able breath in the atmosphere of Earth, it has been shown able to adapt to the environment, which is one similarity it has to the human race. Additionally, it has been confirmed to have the same level of intelligence of the human race. Worldwide, over 1,000 Colonists have already landed and are reported to be in the process of forming colonies.

EDIT:

No, LITERALLY "Immigrants"

I didn't stutter.

Looks like a horrible mistranslation.

I'm sure they've meant something along the lines of "alien" but without invoking the "green men from outer space" image, but the end result... yeaaah.

A poor choice of words but if the in game aliens are trying to take over the planet then it's not the incorrect word to use. It is a correct use of that word.

Not the most sensitive choice of words, though.

I actually like the naming Immigrants... gives a Starship Troopers propaganda vibe. and would make me feel bad killing them.

Though I have never played this game and am quite sure that was not their intention.

But arent aliens literally immigrants?

I don't think these aliens are looking to immigrate to Earth and find a job to support their families.

Unless, the actual game was about aliens just trying to coexist with us humans and we, in our unquenchable bloodlust, just killing them all without hearing them out.

It's like Men in Black!

It's either a translation error or satirizing the fear of immigrants.....EDF is already a dumb over-the-top patriotic look at Earth and protecting it

They could also be making fun of "illegal aliens" so they're calling the aliens "immigrants"

I'll refrain from having an opinion about this, the idea of calling giant ants and frogmen that want too wipe out humaity "immigrants" could just as well be a parody of Trumplike people and their idea of what immigrants are just as much as it could be an attack on the concept of immigration itself.

Altho, the game being of japanese origin would likely point more to the latter than the former, i'm afraid to say.

This is the only game that has a bigger Military fetish than CoD, with less subtlety lol.

Yea, EDF is known for doing that straight faced.

It has nothing to do with coexisting though. If they're from a different planet (not indigenous) and trying to live here, they are the definition of the word immigrant.

As I said, it's definitely not the most sensitive choice of words but it isn't incorrect.

I mean... these are 'immigrants' that are trying to destroy your country... That is an absolutely awful use of the word...

That's okay, they'll learn of their mistake and correct it to "Foreigners".

I still love you Japan.

That's a bit on the nose.

Earth Defense Force 2017 - "We haven't talked to them yet but the government call them RAVAGERS. Are these our friendly intergalactic neighbours? These RAVAGERS? I sure hope these RAVAGERS are nice."

Voting for unfortunate mistranslation and people reading too much into things.

We don't have a word in spanish for "alien" either. Put that through an automatic translator and you'll get either "strange", "foreigner" or "extraterrestrial".

Sigh. I was wondering when the defense force would appear.

...wait a minute...

Yes, if you strip out the cultural connotation and look at the strict meaning, an immigrant is a "person who comes to a country from another country in order to permanently settle there." That would describe alien invaders looking to conquer and live on Earth. Of course, the use of the word "immigrant" in a contemporary cultural context is fraught with meaning beyond the plain definition, as it is at the heart of very contentious political and social issues.
