Pre-loaded copies of Paper Mario Color Splash can be played right now.

Hahaha that's amazing.

Could Nintendo do something about this actually? Just curious. (Like undertaking legal action or...) I think it's a hilarious fuck up though.

Seriously though, about all they can do is maybe have Youtube take down any footage.

I don't know why I keep F5ing this thread for impressions when it isn't possible for anyone to be more than 15 minutes into the game at this point.

There are previews out there for more than the first 15 minutes. The preview NDA allows talk up to a certain area.

I don't think Nintendo themselves care all that much. It's moreso worry by proxy because I would assume there are retailer contracts that enforce same day release.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'

Neither games are RPG,because Nintendo gives zero fucks about the TTYD fans.
Yeah they do, it's called the Mario & Luigi series though.

:D

Wii U disconnected from the internet. Spotpass also off.

My wife adores Paper Mario (including Sticker Star) and she doesnt know yet this game exists. I was planning to surprise her on October 7th. Now I can surprise her tonight instead!

Hell yeah, my wife is in the Paper Mario fan club as well. One of the like three games she actually enjoys enough to play and finish. She's hyped!

Awwww that's awesome, and man that game looks soooo damn good.

I'll report back with impressions. I wonder if I should out my OT up early. Let's see how many others here want to discuss it early and are playing it and if it's a bunch of us I'll ask mods if I can put it up early. I won't be playing the game till tonight. In the meantime no internet for you, my Wii U! It's time for a mental trip to rural Costa Rica where internet ia harder to come by. You'll learn new things about yourself, and so will the GamePad. 😂

Im glad this happened, and im also glad those fan games earlier this year came out. Nintendo as a company has been trying way too hard to remain secular from the rest of the games industry as of late, and im hoping all of this "loss of control" basically will give them a swift kick to the ass going forward.

Well, this will give me the opportunity to see where the game falters and succeeds, as I don't plan to get it. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

can't really follow your logic here mate.

It worked! Game is pretty so far. About to get into battle tutorials.

how would they litigate this

That's what I thought.

But I'm really curious about the game! Apparently I'm in the minority but I enjoyed my time with Sticker Star. It's easy to see that the game is flawed (Intelligent Systems didn't push the changes all the way, which resulted in a somewhat strange game) but it has it's cool moments.

So... is it good?

I'm coming from the perspective that there's only ever been one good Paper Mario game (Thousand Year Door).

DISCLAIMER: I've never played Sticker Star

The game is gorgeous and charming but my first first impression of the battle system is that it's probably going to be pretty controversial. Look at gamepad>Pick attack card>slide into place>hold finger on attack card to paint it>tap 'done painting'>flick the card to initiate attack>look back at tv>repeat next turn.

Call me lazy, but it seems unnecessarily laborious.

I really wish this was a more traditional Paper Mario game :/ it looks amazing, I want that amazing look applied to something that isn't weird and bland.

This screams "Star Fox control scheme" to me. Totally unnecessary addition to the game that actually made things worse.

Never played it. Should probably put that as a disclaimer in my impression lol. For all I know, it's the same as it was in that game.

More impressions: The writing is cute so far but the Shy Guy public masturbation was a bit much.

You can change your control scheme to 'basic with buttons' if you prefer to not have to do the dragging and flicking on the screen. I don't believe there's a way to eliminate the gamepad and go with the Pro controller though. Hope I'm wrong on that.

Oh, I see. Thanks.

About your more impression. Wait. What?!

You must be joking. I don't think Nintendo could get away with even an oblique reference to that and keep an E rating.

I really hope I don't end up being the only person who had that thought at this particular point in the game!

That's not fair. One of the key features (at least artistically) of the Wii U is how it can ask the player to navigate that uncomfortable space between the TV and the GamePad screen. This is best summed up in this excellent post analysing the system:

Ian Bogost said:
A one-liner on ZombiU's box copy helpfully summarizes that title: "Feel the tension mount as you try to keep an eye on your TV and controller screen." This is more than just marketing copy for a single game: it's a thesis statement for the entire console. The Wii U is a system thrust into the uncomfortable gap between mobile devices and televisions. Just as zombies are neither living nor dead, so Wii U follows suit: today, entertainment in general and video games in particular are neither a televisual medium nor a mobile medium. They are not both, but they are not neither, either. They are something else, something uncanny, unsettling, out of place.

Ian Bogost said:
Still, let's not get too romantic: Nintendo's risk is not daring because the Wii U is good, necessarily. Many will lament what they will perceive as a step back for Nintendo compared to the "innovation" found in the Wii. They might be right. But the Wii U is serious in a way that Nintendo has never attempted. Even Nintendo may not have fully realized what it has done. It has domesticated the wildness of the present moment in video games, consumer electronics, the internet, and home entertainment by caging them out in the open. It's lurid and beautiful and repugnant and real, like watching Mickey Mouse smoke a joint in the alley behind Space Mountain.

We've all been assuming that games "growing up" means growing up in theme, tackling adult issues, achieving the aesthetic feats of literature and painting and film -- even if by "film" we usually mean "summer tent-pole movies."

But there are other ways to grow up. One involves embracing the uncertainty of one's own form and responding deliberately. That's what real art does, after all. It admits that it doesn't know what art is in theory, but only in practice. It gives the finger to its critics because it doesn't care if they like the results. Some among us keep asking for the Citizen Kane of games. Maybe Nintendo delivered something better, something weirder and more surprising -- particularly for a consumer electronics device. Not craft but soul, for once. Even Apple hasn't succeeded at that.

Sticker Star isn't turn-based, and you can definitely argue that playing your cards from an actual deck, in your hands, gives the battles a sense of "being there" or place, much like how the Prepper Pad did in ZombiU, or the GamePad map does in Xenoblade X.

Star Fox Zero's issues aren't solely caused by the fact you have to keep an eye on both screens, basically.

Nintendo would create a lot of good will/PR by saying "our mistake is your gift" and just unlock the game for everyone now. I mean, it's clearly content complete and finished.

I love the idea, but as others have mentioned, retailers would not be pleased. Same reason they haven't done any more early unlocks since WWHD, I suspect.

...You have to do all those steps to do an attack? And then the normal paper mario timed inputs too?

Crikey. Not counting looking between the tv and gamepad (and that's a generous thing to ignore), every step after "pick attack card" there is entirely superfluous use of the gamepad.

edit:

At least they're not completely insane then.

Go into options. There you can change the controls to touch and buttons. Makes the battles way faster. You also don't have to colour every card before using them, but it makes the attacks stronger.

I thought painting the cards was just for bonuses to the attacks?

That's how you make them do more damage, in addition to proper Action Commands.

Just for kicks and giggles, they removed damage numbers so you don't actually know how much your attacks are doing exactly.

Perhaps it's just a bonus. Either way you've got to go through that step of the process. The tutorial said 'the more paint, the stronger the attacks'.

Gamepad is about dead. Need to find a way to charge it without the dock...

You can remove the charger from the dock and plug it in your Gamepad.

Interesting...I'll keep an eye on this thread for impressions as well. I've never played SS either so Justen's thoughts could help with the decision to get this :)

From my July 5 article about the game, which was based on an interview I did with the producer in June:
This makes me really hopeful that they've been saving a bunch of projects that are near complete for the NX.

You never really know what Nintendo has up its sleeve. I've been following them so closely for decades now, and they still manage to surprise me year after year.

Check the digital manual maxcriden, apparently it includes developer commentary. :)

Also it plays music too!

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Damn it, they fixed it it seems. Don't have the option to pre-load....

Can anyone else confirm this? If the option is gone, I'll update the OP. (I'm in Europe where nothing this cool ever happens, so can't check myself.)

I've been wondering where the damage numbers were... thought I was missing something. I've put in a decent hour and finished the first stage. Haven't had any battles where the strength of my attacks have really mattered so I haven't thought about it.
