Only played a little so far, it's stayed pretty solid at 60 FPS for me--though I haven't gotten into a city yet or anything. Playing in 1080p, with FPS set to 60 and the dynamic render quality on high (tried ultra and it dips down into the 45-50 range). I haven't messed with the settings in advance since it's running well as is, and I'm not much of tweaker.

GTX970, i7-4790k 4.0 ghz, 16gb RAM.

Well shit, just tried to play again and it ran like shit this time. Drops down into the 30s with tons of stuttering/hitching making it unplayable. :(

It was raining, but I was just in the area near the starting festival, and I did rainy race event earlier with no problems. So no idea was the issue is now.

VIP still not working as well. Going to try restarting my PC I guess and see if it helps. Failing that, I'll try locking it at 30 and see how that works.

EDIT: Running fine again after restart. Though it wasn't raining in game when I reloaded so not sure if it was the restart or change in game state or what.

I remember someone here mentioned that the store downloaded both on the OS drive and the drive you specified it to download to. I can currently see 2 19gb both on my OS and F drive. Does it really keep 2 as I only have about 38gb left on my OS drive.

So the 60FPS dream for Horizon is already dead? Come on Playground!

I'm hoping not. It's not there yet, but I'm hoping there's still some unconsidered routes for optimization that can be taken through updating the client to open up that potential to a wider range of users.

As of this experience, though, I am kind of FINALLY feeling that kind of burn about games not seeming to be more polished at launch time, though. Granted, I still have the XB1 version, which while isn't ideal is still actually performance-locked for the most part. I never ever denied the bummed out consumers over the years that express disgruntlement about games launching without polish, but I never did feel the burn quite like this.

Finally re-entering the PC gaming scene with this laptop last week and seeing the gains I had over my previous desktop in titles like GTAV and Witcher III kind of had me excited that Horizon 3 was going to be my first fresh, high-end PC gaming experience... But as of launch, that's not the case. I wasn't expecting to be able to max the game out, but XB1 level IQ with 60fps would've been tolerable to me -- just a solid 60fps lock to give it that boost over the console experience, y'know?

Ah well, dream's not dead just yet... I am hoping there's work that can be done to make it work for me, but it is a shame that I have to hope instead of having already. :p

I downloaded it with only 20gb left on my os drive to begin with, and I still have 20gb free now.

Downloading it was a test of patience rivaled only by the torturous afterlife of Greek mythology, but that's another story.

I tried locking it to 30fps on PC but it didn't feel nearly as good as Xbox version (which runs at 30fps). Is it just me or is something actually going on there?

some devs do extra work to lower input lag on console games whereas that work might not be done on the pc version where input lag is only a factor of fps

Lol , its amazing , i have the same fps in 2560x1440 and 3300 x1660 ( approximative its dsr ) lol ...

In the city 45-50 fps ...

Optimization are broken ... but the game are very beautiful ...

Config : GTX 1070
I7 4770K@4.2Ghz
16Go DDR3

I think the only modern game I've played on PC where 30fps felt as responsive as it does on console was Witcher 3, which I think might have baked-in 30fps techniques to manage frame pacing and input response.

Horizon 3 hasn't been very successful for me and the 30fps lock. The 30fps counter never ever moves from the 30fps target, but the controls feel significantly more sluggish than my XB1 download with and without vsync.

In the past, I tried to limit Just Cause 3 and GTAV (on my old, less-powerful desktop PC) to 30fps thru various means, either by forcing 30Hz refresh rate on my display, using a third party client to restrict FPS limit to 30, a combination of both, and it never ever felt as smooth. Without some really good motion blur (which Horizon 3 does have) to help bleed the lower amount of frames together a bit more smoothly, it also looks really bad to the eyes to me as well at 30fps.

So yeah, 30fps lock on Horizon 3 doesn't feel great to me, either. It's more playable than my 60fps->45fps stutters but noticeably worse than playing on XB1.

2016 PC gaming from Microsoft everybody.

Not at all. Not with frametimes like these:

Yea. It's weird how lowering res doesn't really bring an fps boost. I ultimately just stopped messing around with settings trying to get 60 fps because no matter what I do it just isn't gonna happen I'm afraid.

Gtx 970
i5-4690k
16 GB ram

So now I'm running 1440p downsampled to my 1080p monitor on high preset. No hitching, frame drops, etc.

I'd obviously love stable 60 fps instead but the game is seriously gorgeous.

Cross posting as I need help:

Weird problem. Wife is playing on her account on our xbox one, and I am playing on my account on pc. My account is signed out on the xbox. Two seperate xbox accounts.

Everytime I try to do almost anything, turn the game on, accept a friend invite, it logs her out on the xbox and logs my account in. Not a huge issue but it requires her to restart the game everytime. This has happened 3 or 4 times now. What do I need to do so when I do something on PC it doesn't log off her signed in account?

yikes. I don't usually measure that kind of stuff and go off feel, so it's a bit alarming that I didn't detect that last year. It was only about 30 minutes of me cranking settings up and limiting to 30fps, but I remember it feeling largely playable. This was relatively shortly after my Bloodborne play, so maybe that game had changed my perception for a while.

Anyone think there might be something I can do to make Horizon 3 feel smoother at 30fps? I've really only just toggled vsync on and off, but never restarted the client between the on/off (don't think that would make too much of a difference). Game can definitely stay locked at 30 on my laptop but I just can't get controller response feeling great.

Not really, it probably means the game is CPU limited. Resolution wouldn't matter if that's the case.

Well yea that's a given.

But I'd describe that as weird since it's not that common from my personal experience playing pc games. "Weird" probably just wasn't the right word to describe it universally.

Actually, no, it's not a given. The game may be limited by something else completely like the PCIE bandwidth for example. We need proper benchmarks.

Anyone know how to wipe single player progress and restart? I tried the method posted earlier in this thread (reset via apps & features > Forza Horizon 3 > Advanced > Reset) and that cleared my settings etc, but didn't touch my save file. I just continued where I already was.

There must be a way to restart the single player mode no?

Ok, hold on to your butts. Here's how I did it:

-Reset the Windows 10 game like you say in your post.
-Went to my Xbone and downloaded the game until it said "Playable". Started the game once.
-Went to Manage Game->Saves and chose Delete Everywhere,
-Booted the game on Win 10, tada, fresh start.

As far as I know, there's no way to manage the cloud saves on Windows 10. So if you don't have a Xbox, I really don't know.

MS PC Gaming focus keeps delivering.

So basically there is no way to restart the game on PC unless you have an Xbone? Fucking amazing. Just incredible. Well done all involved.

I have played the game all day, first tried on PC very early this morning and had the stutter issue so went to the One.

I am heading upstairs for bed soon but this does mean I can give the PC another go.

So I am just confirming this Enable Maximum Performance setting is in the Nvidia Control Panel under Power Management or something along those lines? Or is it somewhere else?

When I Googled it just now I found a few different places.

Played for about 3 hours on my PC:

I7 4770k @ 4.2
HD7970 @ 1050 & 1450
16gb ram @ 1866
Corsair Neutron SSD

Everything maxed at 1080 I'm getting about 25-30 fps. Going to lock FPS to 30 and see what I can turn down to get it stable.

Only had one crash so far but it completely froze my PC. Had to do a hard reboot. Happened in the city at night.

Anyone know what the default directory for Horizon 3's install is? I'm trying to add it to RivaTuner but can't find the .exe for the life of me. I didn't specify any alternate place to install, just rolled with the default.

EDIT: I also don't see it in Control Panel installed programs list.

Okay, I am heading upstairs in like 5 minutes so apologies for posting again, but I got no reply yet so started reading through the thread and I am even more confused. I have read people saying enable this Max Performance Setting. Other's saying to disable it?
So would love to know which one is it and just a confirmation as to where it is?
Any help truly appreciated.

nVidia Control Panel (right click on your desktop if you have nVidia drivers) -> Manage 3D settings -> Power management mode -> Select "Prefer maximum performance" from drop down menu -> Hit apply in the bottom right -- it might take a second for it to apply, but once you're done, that's basically it.

Tried Forza Apex before deciding if I should dive in this and I thought that was decent, did the first races with everything on Dynamic except for AF. No noticeable stuttering, W10 anniversary, latest Nvidia drivers (372), power/performance mode.

That's free though, this is 99.99 , kinda hard to take a leap of faith for this price.

I wish more PC racing games had decent presentation like this (menus, etc, not graphics).

Fwiw, Forza 6 was a 60fps track based console game coming to PC.

Forza Horizon 3 is a 30fps open world console game.

The performance definitely won't line up 1:1, and it'll probably be worth just waiting for the $60 one as it'll likely have a patch closer too.

You have lived up to your username my friend.
This is all I was looking for.
Thank you as it was pretty much unplayable for me this morning.

If I post again shortly in this thread, it is safe to say it did not work. If I do not post the rest of the night, it is probably safe to say it did work.

So I just did it. Fingers crossed it makes a difference.

I still get wildly inconsistent performance. Enabled it prior to even playing. :(

I have been playing this for about 3 or 4 hours with the almost minimum requirements.

- Core i5 3570k at stock speed.
- GTX760SC 2GB.
- 8GB DDR3.

And from what I could gather testing and trying settings... I can play at low-mid lot of options on mid, a few ones on low. Without MSAA, enabling FXAA, at 1080p at 40-50fps with drops to 30fps or similar when there is like 12 opponents on the screen.

Now, here is the funny thing, If I activate the 30fps lock, the game runs even worse, with drops to 24fps and then stable 30fps. Which means the game runs even worse if I cap it.

Also, CPU usage when driving is 100% all the time, same with my HDD. When stopping a little it goes down to 80% CPU and 5 or 6% HDD. It seems that my HDD is dying trying to keep up with loading all these far textures when speeding through the world.

And it keeps telling me that my VRAM is low, but the game doesn´t seem to stutter too much to notice, even though the draw distance for tree textures is like 100m and it looks like blocks after that.

I don't feel so bad now. I came here after seeing pretty regular drops on my 1070 to see if there were any obvious settings to push it to a solid 60. 😔

Yeah, while it no doubt helped tremendously, there are still plenty of performance issues like you said.
Never-mind the fact it still does not recognize all the DLC including the most important one of VIP.
I just banked up 4 wheel spins for tomorrow when I play on the One again.

So again, thank you. At least it is somewhat playable now, but it still has a long way to go.
Really hope they sort it out soon as come next week being able to playing primarily on the PC is going to be massive for myself.
I have a rare weekend where I can play the One to my hearts content as my wife has an important exam to study for that she takes on Monday.
After that it is back to normal so the option to play on the PC means more opportunities for myself to get some playing time period.
So I do hope they release a patch sooner rather than later.

Thanks again as it no doubt helped some.

So I wasn't receiving achievements for the first 10 hours or so I was playing. I realized it was cause I had blocked W10's telemetry services, and re-enabling them fixed it. I still blocked all the ones that I could, but that's kinda lame.

I was able to pop some achievements that I should have gotten, but others I cannot. Such as the one for unlocking your fourth radio station (I have them all) and basically doing the first mission. Is there a way to have a second save file so I could start over and get those and then go back to my original save? Or just another way for those first achievements to pop?

Yeah, it's pretty big for me, too. We have downtime at work and are allowed to do anything that's work-safe (well, I'm actually allowed to watch something like Game of Tthrones but not straight-up porn) and I bring my laptop every shift. Was on-shift when the game unlocked, spent the rest of that shift trying to get it to run playably... To no avail.

Would love to just spend time with this game around the clock until I exhaust its fun factor for me... But as of right now I only have it available on my Xbox One at home... Which I could technically haul into work with me, just need to bring my monitor and stuff along, too, which is far less convenient than a laptop.

I mean, how did you expect them to communicate with Microsoft servers? I guess they could create an extra, special games-only communication service, but that's kind of silly. Obviously a Microsoft product is going to use existing Microsoft services. There's really good reasons for that, like getting what should be a more polished, stable protocol.
