PS4 surpassed Wii U in Japan

And tanked hard while the PS4 has had incredible success. I believe PS4 passed Wii U in North America within a few months or so. It's very telling about the console industry that it took this long in Japan.

right, and how much did it take for PS4 to surpass it in every other part of the planet?
Yes, but console sales in Japan have not been the same for about a decade now......

Since plenty of PS4 games have cross-gen versions with PS Vita when normally they would be exclusive, the PS4 actually sold 8 million in Japan.

Wii U deserved a better fate than this.

PS4 deserves a better fate than this as well. Japan is really off the console train, huh?

If I'm not mistaken the PS2 sold 21 million in Japan alone right? We're never going to see that number again, are we? Not even close.

First thought: why did someone bump this thead? Second thought, after having read the OP: ... lol.

You ruined my thread with your short/crappy thread -_-

Anyways:

PS4 is the best selling mome console of this generation in Japan
According to Media Create, we have a new No.1 home console (for this generation) in Japan.

WiiU launch: December 8, 2012
PS4 launch: February 22, 2014

PS4 LTD: 3.267.243
WiiU Japan LTD: 3.265.329
XBO LTD: 68.224

lol

shocking news should be in the thread title too

it seems the PS4 was faster to reach a better price as well, even the Pro is cheaper (according to amazon.jp)

The industry completely missed the boat with the Wii (which essentially replaced PS2 for the mainstream), and since then there are only a decreasing amount of crumbs left for the Japanese home console market.

which is exactly the point here, since it's a thread about Japan. So the fact that WiiU launched one year earlier is a worthless point.
That the PS4 has barely surpassed one of the biggest home console flops only now is pretty telling.

It's sad because when they release big games for the market, the sales spike but not as much as they could because they launch alongside PS3/Vita versions which typically take the Lion's Share of the sales. It's the chicken or the egg problem where they need their titles right now to succeed but they're hurting the prospects of their future releases by not committing to growing the install base.

The longer this goes on, the more and more my habits shift towards PC, as I just don't see the appeal of a console landscape without Japan.

Handhelds are heading in the same direction, sad stuff. With the state of the home market over there, you'd think Nintendo and Sony would shack up together.

Wii actually did pretty well in japan too for first couple of years (it was outpacing PS2). it just died even faster in Japan than in west. I really don't know how industry backing Wii more in Japan would have changed things in longer run though. WiiU would have bombed nevertheless and PS4 would have struggled just as much as it has now.

So PS4 will never get close to the PS3 in Japan.
It probably will, PSVR is looking promising and the Japanese-centric games are starting to release more frequently.

Big hitters like FF15 and Dragon Quest XI are coming, along with other good-sellers like Yakuza and Persona.

On one side, we have the entire might of the relevant JP console third parties and exclusivity on the popular western games. On the other side, we have a plumber and some squids. Took them long enough seeing how the Wii U has had about half a dozen notable releases this year.

It's good for PS4 to get here, and software sales seem to be sustainable enough for good releases for the most part, but the Wii U will still hold a few wins. It has 4 million sellers, and one of them has the potential to hit 2 million. Will the high end PS4 software hit those heights? Time will tell, but I'm not optimistic.

A non-event.

And the fact that it took years, a price drop and a new model, makes it even less impressive.

Truly a battle for SCRAPS.
Yeah let's forget the Wii U releasing a year earlier than the PS4 in Japan and totally no price drops made at all for Wii U right?

So they play mobile games, at home?

At this point, can you honestly say that you haven't ever played a game on your phone at home?

I'd wager five bucks that most of us do this regularly, even for just a few minutes here and there. But a lot of folks--really, a lot--ONLY play on their phones. That's where the casual market has gone (at least in America). You can't beat the convenience...you already have your phone.

The casual market doesn't buy consoles any more; they only play consoles when someone else in the residence already bought one (or when they bought one for their teenager). Need proof? Perhaps you didn't notice, but remember all those movie tie-in games that existed from the 80s up through the 360/PS3 generation? Those are now on mobile.

Yep, very much. Just like the rest of the world. Everyone is glued to their phones even at home.

But consoles sales aren't as bad around the rest of the world. We all play on our phones or handhelds on the move but then also buy and play on our home consoles. Consoles have struggled over the last 2 or so gens in Japan, right?

Is it more of a cultural thing, or better Japanese games on the handhelds?

Question since people are bringing up Persona 5 did I miss the sales data for how it did in Japan in relation to total PS4 Sales?

And are games like Yakuza, shenmue 3 going to impact Japanese sales?

They don't play games at home. Japan has a number of factors that lead to that: Housing space concerns, work culture with less free time, more emphasis on being outside the house, etc.

Ah OK, this is what I was after. Thanks.

So with the NX rumoured to be a hybrid handheld/home console, Nintendo is trying to cater to both?

PS4 didn't have a price drop till 2015. So for 2 years with Wii U having a head start they still outsold Wii U. Also PS4 was still more up till the past month. So no I don't see your point.
