Day 1 Patch for Gears of War 4 (Disc Only)

I fucking hate buying console games now. It takes like 40 minutes to install and then after that I need an 11gb patch? When it goes at like half the speed of Steam that makes playing a game on Day 1 pretty much impossible.

Honestly at least for me, my XBO download speeds are top notch. More so than Steam.

I was kind of worried that the day 1 patch was going to be quite large, oh well still getting physical anyways to save not having to download the full 50 or so GB.

To be fair... If you're comparing buying games on console to buying games on Steam then surely you're referring to digital games? In that case, I currently have all of Gears 4 pre-loaded onto my console and I'll be ready to play at midnight on the 7th... Download speeds matched exactly what I pay for from my ISP so no issue there.

The day-one experience with a disc is pretty abysmal though. Almost no reason to buy physical if you're interested in playing right away.

So typically how big are the patches (and how long is the install) for physical copies of Steam games?

As these huge day one patches are now normal, they need to let people with slower connections who buy physical pre load these patches somehow.

No fun in getting your game on release day and having to wait for several hours to play it.

True, it is less than ideal but price is the biggest reason to go physical still. You can often get a deal on new physical games, but rarely on digital (for AAA games at least).

Let me guess. The 50 GB Blu-ray disc was too small? Why can't they use two discs? Probably because the Xbox OS doesn't support it. Thus is getting ridiculous, especially for Microsoft first party games.

This has nothing to do with the size of blu-rays. The game was "done" when it was put on the disc, but there was probably lots of bug fixing still to do (Assuming there wasn't content missing of course), and as such, the truly "done" version of the game is what you get when you download the patch. This is the state of video game development right now at a lot of studios.

Honestly though, 11gbs sounds like straight up missing content. maybe the MP wasn't complete, and that's what you're downloading with this patch.

Long install times from the disc is still a thing on Xbox One. I thought that would've been fixed by now.

When they fixed bugs last generation, we could expect a 8 MB day one patch.

A-gawd-damn-men.

Been enjoying this X1 digital pre-load luxury since Nov. 2013.

As soon as 12:01 EST hits its showtime.

day one patch isn't a problem on the xbox one.....its that fucking disc install time......its absurd. You wouldl have that patch downloaded before that disc install would be done.

with GCU savings though....I was able to basically buy two new consoles this gen already. Its fucking absurd how much money you save physical. Nearly $20 every new release from best buy due to GCU + $10 gift card pre order

Do we have patch notes on what the 11gb patch contains?

Doesn't really make sense doing this since its a day one patch of a newly released product.

Please be built into my 72gb pc preload.

I might have 2 500gb SSDs but like hell that's going on those

I already pre-loaded the Xbox One version and was going to pre-load on PC last night, but then saw the 72GB size. Maybe I'll do half tonight and the rest in early October to spread it over my ISP data usage for each month. Haha.

Did we hear why the PC version is so much bigger? 4K art and assets I would guess.

I really hope that collectively companies can figure out a way to universally store patches online somewhere. Once servers inevitably go down for some consoles there's going to be a shit ton of unpolished, unfinished, broken experiences out there. Not a shot at Gears, but gaming as a whole lately.

Just pre-ordered my Ultimate Edition at BB. Traded in Rainbow Six for $23 and got a $10 coupon towards Gears 4. All that with GCU and I'll only be paying $47 out-of-pocket. I already have a $10 RZ cert and will get another for pre-ordering the game so that's another $20 I'm gonna save. Fuck yea I love being a thrifty gamer!

I haven't been this pumped for a game since The Last of Us. My body is ready for next Friday.

This isn't a problem on PS4 though. I don't think I've ever played a game where I've had to wait more than about 30 seconds for it to install. What are Nintendo games like for day one patches?

It's probably just the multiplayer part of the game and not a true "day 1 patch". Halo 5 (?) I think did this aswell.

Nah that does work now. We even get BC games wich had more discs.

To be real fair. Preload wasnt at launch yet. ;)

No BC game requires two discs to install though. The only one I can think of that does is the Bioshock Collection. Even then, it's Bioshock 1 & 2 on one disc and Bioshock infinite on the second disk so they're completely different apps.

I'd be willing to be that what amounts to a "bug to be fixed after going gold" is much bigger than what people considered an acceptable, patchable "bug" last gen. Or, perhaps devs are no longer looking for elegant fixes to code, and are instead just having you reinstall large swaths of the original game files with updated versions. Since console makers have apparently lifted restrictions on the size of the patches, it means massive things can probably be left unfinished when the disk is pressed.

I think it's pretty messed up, but that seems to be the status quo. I would really like to see coverage of what games look like without massive, day-one patches to get a feel for how broken they were when they were committed to the disk. I wonder how many games even let you play them without patching first.

GCU is absolutely fantastic, but I still go digital for just about every game that I can. For Xbox specifically, I use Bing rewards (now Microsoft Rewards) and have a few accounts for different family members. With a few minutes each day I can get at least $30 in credit each month for the Xbox/Windows store.

I'm always tempted to use GCU for new games, but instead I use it for games that are already on sale. Makes a good deal even better!
