So what do you DO in Sea of Thieves?

Cannot wait for this game, seeing the IGN crew playing it at E3 with their smiles and grins the entire time sold me. All the positive impressions from those who have played it has helped also!

I hope there's full cross play with PC, doesn't seem like a game they will need to separate like competitive multi Gears.

It's funny you put that in the title because I was thinking the same thing about this game. I think I actually made a comment in the other thread about it saying this might be Microsofts No Man's Sky.

Reading the OP though it does seem like there might be some actual game to this one. Having said that, I'm getting Evolve vibes where the fun in this game is derived from having friends to play with, so if none of your friends buy this game, you essentially can't.

Sounds fun, wish I had a platforn to play it on.

I'd take a seat on the ghost ship and count how many times Captain Sharkbait runs by.

Sounds awesome but I do agree that they need to start showing some of this other stuff soon assuming it's actually releasing Q1 next year.

It's nowhere close to release. This was one of if not the most awarded title at E3, Microsoft will market the shit out of it, and they haven't begun yet. This thing is at least 9+ months out, I assume it will launch alongside Scorpio so 12 months out. They will definitely put it in the fall if the rumored $30 price is true.

I try not to ask "what do you do" questions anymore, it makes me feel old. A lot of very popular games these days don't have defined objectives. Younger players today don't really value an end screen like we used to or still do. They just want something they can get the most enjoyment out of rather than something you enjoy a little and then slog through to get to the end.

I hope so. I love the promise of the game but that didn't exactly turn out well for NMS. Regardless, I'm ready to see some new stuff because it sounds really cool.

Even if it ends up being less than what they've hinted at, we already know it's an open world with full multiplayer and shared goals and actual discovery. I don't think there's a way in hell this is worse than what no mans sky ended up being.

NEXT LEVEL lame™
All of this sounds incredible to me.

It's also worth mentioning again, but the game is $39.99 here in Canada as opposed to $59.99 in the US. I'm not sure if BestBuy.ca will ship to you guys, but it's a cheaper option if they do.

Sounds great

Just like NMS did. Heres to hoping they actually pull it off.
People have played it and have spoken about how great it is. It's not vague empty promises, grand ambition without backing up with gameplay.

So no. It's not NMS situation at all.

They did the same for nms. Granted I don't think this is a nms situation at all but still previews don't mean much

I think Sea of Thieves is taking the opposite approach of No Man's Sky. No Man's Sky was grandiose in its promises and was constantly racing to hit release dates. Sea of Thieves is not making any promises, and seems to be taking their time with a real development schedule.

That said, when I watch Sea of Thieves gameplay and read interviews, there doesn't seem to be a lot there for me. With most games that I really get into, they come to "To what goal am I doing this stuff?" And it doesn't have to be a central goal, but when someone says something like "Oh, there's lots to do in Sea of Thieves. You can find treasure and trade in towns, you can sail to an island and stash your ship, you can sail to a port and play sea shanties with friends." I think to myself, "Ok, sounds nice, but, to what goal?" I don't think the devs are ready to answer that question yet, which is fine, but I hope when the game ships, there is an answer.

This seems more remeniscient of the direction of GTA Online than it does No Man's Sky, to me.

Millenials and the pursuit of "experiences"
I'm like you too though and prefer "finishing" games. Though I can see this being like mine craft where there's no game goal, just a bunch of hanging out

Because people playing a structured short demo or those who are essentially in the marketing scheme are going to give you the full picture?

No the difference is they aren't making grandiose promises, they are doing the opposite essentially withholding pretty much all information as to how the game actually works beyond boat battles.

What, completely open public access? Plus planned beta?
You said people have played it and praised it I said the same happened to nms? They can show more in fact Im not the one comparing it. But if it is indeed supposed to be a Q1 title yes I would like to see what they're talking about.

At the very least quests are In so it's not a simple here's the world have fun type of thing

My Gamescom hands-on impressions from earlier this year of their demo involving PVP ship combat. There were more distinct little activities to do in that bit than in NMS as a whole some could argue. I have faith in Rare.
They haven't given me anything good in awhile to have faith but the title looks good so far yes

I played it three times, twice the same starting point on the map (which incidentally is the one shown in the video -- was playing as "LuckyLou102" both times). The other one had you swim out to the ship.

Coordinating the ship activities, managing the sails, dropping the anchor for "hand break" turns, being the lookout up in the eagle's nest, repairing and shooting the cannons and such was great -- unless you were stuck manning the wheel. That was quite boring, you couldn't see anything due to the sails being in the way. Of course nothing forces you to stick to any one task but for one of the demos I did.

It's clear you need a competent team communicating to really make the game work. One of the times I was playing with 4 Rare developers on my own team, which unsurprisingly was the funniest session.

The demo only really showed what it was like manning the ship -- which was mostly really fun and played well, if a bit simplistic. You couldn't tell anything about the game play loop or progression outside of this particular aspect though (do you scavenge for upgrades? gear? musical instruments? how big/seamless is the world? etc.)

At least for me, NMS always sounded like something a small team could never achieve. They were actually a lot of people who thought they would never reach the promises made, but gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Assuming Scorpio is accompanied by suppoet for some VR peripheral, best-case scenario would be to have Sea of Thieves release Holiday 2017 alongside Scorpio and feature VR support.

If Sea of Thieves hits just right, I could be the AAA killer app VR is looking for.

(Obviously would need to feature VR/non-VR crossplay for player base purposes.)
I think it would be the most vomiting inducing game ever. VR First Person sailing is probably the worst type of game to translate into VR.

Given GAF's reaction I think that's BS. Just like they reacted to NMS. Sure we don't need a solid ending sometimes, but generally even younger gamers need a carrot (Goal to work towards). Otherwise the whole experience stagnates very quickly generally.

Or maybe I'm not just fully understanding what you mean. Because I can say for certain that we still value goals and a fitting conclusion to a story.

Edit: edited because I'm trying to get better about not using English idioms or at least defining them when I do.

This game in no way seems like a flagship "Hey, look how good Scorpio is!" title.

Hopefully this game turns out well and puts Rare back on the map. They're definitely taking their time on this one.

The NMS comparisons are only coming in because they're mentioning a lot of features that they haven't shown at all yet, and we've been getting roughly the same demo for a while now. Comparisons will die down once they do show this stuff and we can get a clearer picture of what the game encompasses. Also yeah, the open beta will help.

My completely uninformed prediction is that it will be really cool if you can find a group of people to play with consistently but when inevitably I end up playing it by myself 90% of the time, it will be really boring and I won't be able to do anything.

I hope I'm wrong. I've wanted a pirate game like this for a long time. Wasn't Bungie developing one at one point?

This is Rare. They pour love into every game, and I've never seen them not deliver what they wanted and talked about. Rare Replay is/was an obvious love letter from those guys, and I enjoyed games like Viva Pinata (which was awesome). They may not always make a game everyone wants, but I'd never call Rare out for not delivering a content rich game or environment to play in.

Sea of Thieves is like a relapse, a sign of Rare waking up and saying "Fuck, we're a game company, lets make some games".

Please be good, please.

What's the end game? Just collecting treasure for bigger boats so you can gank lower level pirates?

The game play seems pretty shallow so far, It sounds like a MMO where you just run around looking at stuff. Hopefully I'm wrong and it is better than they are describing it.

This is Rare? I thought the core Rare team left years and years ago...this is the Rare that were making kinect games.

This one has my attention, pirates and skeleton pirates and all that. Hope it is a reemergence of Rare. The old talent may be gone, but maybe the new people will make a new golden age for Rare.

Yes, most of the old employees are gone. Yes, today's Rare mostly consists of new employees. What's your point?

The people make the company, therefore it's not necessarily the same Rare I guess. So we can't really hold their past work as a precedent for this. Which is a healthy line of thought. Being skeptical is good.

I like the idea of no classes/levels. Keeps everybody on an even playing field. Success will depend on you knowing what to do in a given situation and knowing your environment.

There's no reason why the new people can't "make" the company either. People change jobs all the time. Developers move in and out of companies. Being skeptical is fine, but you can't just cling on to the same developers forever.

You also can't claim that this is Rare and Rare make quality games. Microsoft wasted the goodwill of the company when they bought it expected Donkey Kong.

I'm not saying they can't make amazing games, I just want to see it happen first.

The new Rare is making a Pirate based game with social features and the frame-rate of the game is near perfect. Mean while, the part of the old Rare is making a game based on nostalgia, I think I know what Rare is doing better.

I thought the title was sincere. Damnit...

Otherwise I am totally stoked for this game, but at the same time it'll probably die before I start playing it =(

...I'm willing to bet Yooka-Laylee sells more than Sea of Theives and is better recieved. And I say that as someone who really wants Sea of Theives to do decently well.

To clarify not my personal view, just what I assume what the point was you were referring to.

Sure, I can't claim that today's Rare makes quality games. They're mostly unproven. But I think it's ridiculous to say that I can't claim they're Rare. Lol. They ARE Rare. What else are they if they're not? Just because they have new employees doesn't mean they can't be called Rare. Are you going to say that Playtonic is "Rare" then?
