So my 780ti died this Thursday(up until 2h ago I thought it was my PSU), the place I bought it at doesn't have any in stock and they only stock 1080s at the same price point I bought my 780ti at. By law and company policy they have to replace it with a nVidia GPU at the same price.

So after all my warranty shit clears looks like I'm getting a 1080 for free. Feels good friends. Will post pics of whatever model they send me.

So I finally got it, my 780ti was replaced for a 1080 Strix, pretty nice free upgrade. Gonna OC and do stuff later

So I have a small form factor case without a nice side panel mesh for a GPU with custom cooling, so I'm limited to the blower style of cooler.

I had a GTX 1070 founder's edition, which I sold for a new GTX 1080 (To power a new ultra wide monitor + Gears was free with it). It's also a blower style GPU The MSI Aero OC 1080.

However I don't know if I shoudl return it or what, but the founder's edition 1070 was way easier to keep cool. I was hitting 2 Ghz through out a long play session and it stayed under 85 degrees, even during heavy load. But my 1080 hits almost 90 degrees even after short gaming periods. Even with the fan at max, it hits it's temperature threshhold and throttles down to about 1800 Mhz.

Did I get a lemon? Is the Aero OC known to not be very good? Should I exchange it for a founder's?

From my experience, 1070 cards are considerably cooler in general than 1080 ones so it's unlikely that you'll be able to find a 1080 with better thermals. You may want to try the FE however as so far it's probably the best blower style 1080 on the market, it may allow you to go some 5C or so lower than the MSI Aero one.

It sounds like you have a lemon I'd return it, I have an EVGA FTW and if I push it hard(without a custom fan curve) I get just close to the thermal limit 83C. You must have hot ambient temps?. I wouldn't get a founders arent they supposed to be worse for temps.

FTW is not a blower style cooler though. Out of all blower cooler cards FE seems to be the best, if a bit expensive because of +$100 price.

Thanks guys, gonna return this one....

Oh no, I registered my copy of Gears though, will Amazon not like that?

They probably won't ask about it.
I agree with dr_rus, with that the FE is probably the best blower style out there.

Kind of unfortunate that we have to make these kinds of sacrifices in SFF, but you can't beat that small footprint.

Oh my tale of woe...

So I initiated a return for my 1080 Aero OC. Not wanting to be without a GPU for possibly severla days I went and ordered a Zotac with custom coolign solution instead. Meaured the length, and realized that if I did some re-routing of cables it should fit nicely and have breathing room.

In the process of doing this I realized that the system fan that fed air into the back of my 1080 had failed! It wasn't spinning, and likely the reason the card go so hot.

Sure enough I replaced it, and now the card doesn't go above 80 degrees. My zotac arrived in the meantime, and it sure as hell fits lengthwise with room to breathe on the side... BUT, the power cables poiunt up and it's just tall enough that I can't hook it up to power and close my side panel!

Jeebus.

Just bought a 1080... so confused with the OC. I have my power limit set to 120 but it doesn't actually go over 100-101% says my voltage is limited, I'm at +100% and 1.09V.

That's surprisingly late. With that leaked spec sheet ostensibly originating from Nvidia themselves, I'd have figured November launch was a given to vacuum up all those Holiday bux.

No need to launch anything new before AMD will be able to beat some Pascal at least.

Do you guys remember when I complained about 100% fan speed and black screen? It is a legitimate issue with the FTW version apparently. Three months had passed since I bought the card and RMA'ing the thing might be difficult (if applicable in this case).

I guess I will look for another brand for my friend's new PC build. I am kinda screwed; I hope this doesn't become a frequent issue on future demanding games.

How do you guys justify going 1080 over a 1070

No amount of power is too much for VR or 4K. In some heavier games, with settings cranked up, even 1080p is enough to fully use 1080's power and you're still not even close to hitting 120FPS.

Downgrading to 1070 would have saved me less than 15% of total cost of my PC build, and the performance loss would have been a lot worse, so I think I can reasonably argue that the 1080 was better value.

Their biggest competition is themselves though, trying to get people to upgrade. Why would anyone buy a 1080 at current pricing with an official Ti spec sheet released? Especially those who have waited this long. Presumably anyone willing to pay $700+ for a GPU is at least informed enough to know a better card is on the immediate horizon. Mainstream Marvin isn't exactly strolling into Best Buy to spend $700 to play Fifa. Nobody's worried about a $200 price premium when they're paying that much, they serve the same market.

There was no official 1080Ti spec sheet released. All you've seen so far are fakes and rumors. And 1080/1070 are selling rather well judging from Steam HW page and the fact that some of them are still hard to get in some countries.

You're overestimating the amount of people who are willing to wait for something faster. Such people usually just don't have the money for the upgrade right now so it's not like them waiting is any loss of sales. And as for 1080Ti - there are no solid info on it coming any time soon still, and I'm pretty sure that NV will wait and see where Vega 10 will land before making any moves with GP102 cards. There's just no reason for them to rush anything.

That stupid rumor-spreading website is claiming that the 1080ti is 800$+ and TitanX (Pascal) fast. I mean how can it be 30% faster than the 1080 and not at least 40-50% more expensive?

The 1080 is a great card. I will personally try to sell mine and get a 1080ti if it is good because I have a defective FTW model (black screen and 100% fan).

I put in my Palit Gamerock Premium yesterday. That thing is ridiculously huge, even for people used to large GPUs. Here it is next to my old GTX680:

I had to remove the fastening mechanism for PCI cards from my Lian Li case because the card was too high - never heard of such a thing before. Now all cards a secured with screws again, like in the good old days.

Everything works alright, thankfully. I performed a BIOS update that is available on Palit's site, and that also went without a problem. One question though: did anybody see a change log for the new BIOS? Couldn't find one even with my decent Google skills.

If that's the one released in late Sep then it's fixed the start/stops of the cooler when the GPU was running on "close-to-active-cooling-but-not-quite-yet" temperatures. Now it bumps up to 30% once it hit 60C and keeps there until the GPU cools down below 50 I think.

Thanks, heard about that bug. Glad it was fixed.

How long will it take for the non-reference cards to come out though?

And be available for purchase...
I don't think Nvidia is going to introduce the Ti already in January. They currently have no competition and don't need to hurry with the launch.

Ready to buy a GTX 1080, but then I saw this:

http://wccftech.com/nvidia-gtx-1080-ti-launch-january/
I want to game at 1440p and 4k, so as much as the RX480 is a nice card I wanted something beefier. I want something high end, recently I've been placing a 1070 in my cart, but after the Vega specs leak, I simply can't purchase it right now.

I really need AMD to launch this 12TF, 16GB HBM2 card early next year because if that's priced lower than the 1080Ti, it will become so easy to make a decision.

Eh? People keep hoping that AMD will release something amazing but it usually falls flat. Just purchase a GTX1080, you wont be disappointed.

I went ahead and picked up a used GTX 1080 for around ~$550. Seemed like a good deal since the Ti will probably end up being like $750 and offer around 30% more performance that I probably won't need since I'm gaming at 1440p60.

Kind of annoying playing games w/ drops though that I think are probably CPU limited(AC Black Flag in towns...).

Just get the damn 1080 already, you ain't gonna live forever anyways

I'm having a minor annoying issue with (I think) my 1080 card.

Once every 2 or 3 days when I turn my computer on I will get no display at all on my monitor. I hold the power button down to turn it off and restart it again and it boots into Windows fine but I will have no internet connection. I restart via Windows again and everything is fine.

The process is the exact same every single time it happens and it only started after I upgraded my video card and monitor. I'm using an Accell 1.2 display port cable and my computer specs are below:

i5 3570K
Asus Z77 Sabertooth motherboard
Zotac Amp Extreme GTX1080
Acer X34 monitor
Seasons Platinum 760W PSU
Windows 10 64 bit (I did a clean install after upgrading)

This isn't a huge issue but it's kind of annoying and if there is an easy fix for it I'd love to know.

Anybody have a problem with getting their 1080 to output 4K through HDMI? My Gigabyte G1 Gaming doesn't seem to manage it. Even at 30Hz I get these flickering spots across the display, 60Hz is a no go. The display is a Sony 65X8505C TV.

My previous GTX 960 had no problem outputting 4K60 to the same display, via the same cable, into the same input port. I have updated the drivers after switching cards, probably multiple times by this point. I still have the old card but haven't tried swapping back to it yet.

Does this sound like a broken GPU? I suppose the TV could have bugged itself with an automatic update, but it doesn't seem likely that a modern TV would fail 4K@60. The only reason I haven't been in a hurry to fix this is that I can still use my custom 1080p@120 resolution just fine.

I didn't know where to post this, but anyway:

VentureBeat: Harvard Business Review ranks Nvidia boss Jen-Hsun Huang as a top 10 best-performing CEO

Nvidia chief executive officer Jen-Hsun Huang is the No. 6 best-performing CEO in the world, according to the latest rankings from Harvard Business Review. The publication notes that this list is about revealing the corporate leaders that are best at delivering reliable long-term performance. Huang cofounded Nvidia in 1993, and he has overseen its growth into the market leader for PC graphics while simultaneously expanding into new sectors like self-driving cars, consumer electronics, and deep-learning cloud computing.

Huang is the top-ranked CEO of a gaming-focused company on the HBR list. Activision chief executive Bobby Kotick comes in at No. 75. EA CEO Andrew Wilson and Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot both did not make the list. Instead, giant corporations that have a minor stake in gaming saw some representation. Tencent chief Huateng “Pony” Ma, Softbank boss Masayoshi Son, and Amazon CEO Jeffrey Bezos made the list at No. 45, No. 73, and No. 76, respectively.

But when it comes to games, this list belongs to Nvidia and Huang. The company generated $1.43 billion during the second quarter of its fiscal 2017 ending July 31. That was up 24 percent year-over-year, and the company has seen similar growth for years. Most of those sales come from its consumer graphics cards — especially now that Nvidia has debuted its advanced line of Pascal cards featuring a new 14nm process design.

Jen's ranking isn't really that impressive once you factor in how dumb/inept/clueless AMD have been.

The only thing I'm surprised about is that he hasn't made a play for them yet, much like he did with 3dfx when they faltered.
