Get your SSDs ready, PS4 Pro supports SATA3

I guess I'm buying one now when I get the chance.

I was on the fence before, but this is the clincher, I think.

Canceled my pre-order since I've got more pressing expenses coming up, but this is fantastic news and will allow me to save for a better HDD to slot into it when I eventually pick up a Pro next year in some bundle or another.

Looking for a brand new Seagate Firecuda 2TB 2.5" SSHD.

Should be showing up on Newegg, Amazon, etc soon. 2TB version for $120 ain't too shabby. I have Seagate's 1TB SSHD on my launch PS4 and it's worked wonders for load times and installs for me.

FYI, the 2TB SSHD Firecuda will come with a 5 year warranty too.

Is there a 1TB SSD that's universally recommended and easily available? I'll be wanting it day 1.

So what Does this exactly mean? Please give me some example of reduced loading times.

For example, getting in and out from houses kills it for me in Skyrim due to the loading Times - would such loading Times be reduced with this kind of hd?

Samsung 850 EVO series.

Yeah, this.

Keep in mind, everyone, that SSDs are already starting to move past SATA so Samsung's 900-series PCIe m.2s won't really give you a benefit because of the SATA bottleneck.

The 960 Pro/Evo, for example, is about to drop this month and does over 3 GIGABYTES PER SECOND as opposed to what you see here, which is around 500mb/s, but since this is SATA you won't get that speed even with some sort of adapter.

Since no one has a PS4 Pro yet it´s hard to tell ;-)

But genreally it can stream data from the SSD much faster than Sata2 = no bandwidth botteneck.

So it should be faster.

Hot fucking damn.

Does that mean the prices on the older ssds will drop?

Only PCIE M.2 (not SATA) will expose the full speed of M.2 (and by extension, NVMe)

Considering the current price of a 2TB SSD is about 10x the price of an HDD of the same size (>600 USD), I don't think it's worth it at this time. But it's good to have the option in the future once SSDs get cheaper.
Too bad they weren't as forward thinking about adding an UHD (BDXL) drive.

Yeah, I edited my post.

For anyone curious, Z170 motherboards have the PCIe M.2 slot, like this:

and there you go. Not going to work on a PS4.

Yeah, that's what the fast SSDs look like now instead of bricks.

But the thing is... Is the OS really designed to make proper long-term use of an SSD? I dunno if it has TRIM, for one thing.

Well, snap. Stuff like this is making me reconsider.

Yes, an internal SSD with enough storage is still pretty expensive, but the prices of those things have been going down considerably. Heck I remember upgrading my 40GB PS3 to a 160GB HDD and it cost me just as much as my curretn 500GB SSD in my laptop. So it's an investment to be made not right now, in this November, but perhaps a year from now or so, maybe even sooner (no idea how fast/slow SSDs are coming down in price).

But damn man... SATA3+SSD speeds on my PS4? Amazing. Would be especially great for games with (currently) long loading speeds. GTA5, Fallout 4 and Bloodborne come to mind (and these are games that generally have 1 single big load at the start too, with exceptions here and there).

On the other hand...eh... still not sure if the Pro is a decent enough upgrade. I mean, yeah it's more powerful but being limited by the OG PS4 makes me doubt it a bit. If it were a brand new console (no strings attached) I'd be more at ease with it (though if this continuous upgrade system proves successful I doubt any new console won't be attached to it's direct predecessor).

PS:

FOR PEOPLE WANTING TO GET A BIG SSD DAY 1

Wait for Black Friday+Cyber Monday. Browse stuff like Amazon and Newegg, they usually have at least 1 awesome deal on SSD's, depending on how far you are willing to go with your money (though in any scenario they'll be cheaper than on regular pricing).

Great news but I'd wait for testing.

I bought a 850 evo 1tb for my PC for around £170. Amazon had deals of £185 and full price was around £225-230. I just looked now (after Brexit) and everywhere is £280-320.

Thank fuck I bought it when I did instead of waiting for more price drops.

As someone who typically plays Destiny + one other game 500GB is plenty for me. Hadn't really been considering the PS4 Pro (no 4K TV, and if I DO buy one I'll also need a new amp) but this might do it for me.

500GB should be pretty cheap to pick up.

I can't justify spending $229-300 for faster load times and the same storage space.

I think I'm going with this .

That's what I got and it works beautifully. As of this post I still have 800 GBs of storage to spare and a massive library of games at my instant disposal. The allure of an SSD is strong but according to Amazon I'd need to spend $600 dollars to get the same amount of storage for a Samsung 850 Evo series. I can't justify that. I could get a smaller SSD but I'd have to constantly back up and restore my digital games when making room or replaying something I had to delete. Something which takes longer than a loading screen.

I have Seagate 1TB SSHD (ST1000LM014) in my PS4 right now i assume it will benefit more with PS4 Pro.

But how the hell i'm gonna put current HDD in to a Pro without removing data?Any solution for that?

If you aren't already, I suggest browsing SlickDeal's SSD section every now and then. You'll find some good deals there for sure (with Black Friday coming up for sure)

Silly question (and slightly off-topic, my bad) but can I just hook those to any SATA port in a motherboard that supports SATA 3? Doesn't need to be a specific motherboard with specific features, right?
