New 3D Mario game shown in Nintendo Switch trailer

Mario 3D World is the closest a 3D Mario game ever came to being something I liked, and I've tried all of them, and I do mean all. I will just never enjoy a 3 dimensional platformer as much as I enjoy 2 dimensional platformers, and 2D Mario games are top tier 2D platformers. I would take any of the New Super Mario Bros series, even 2 on the 3DS, over Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy any day.

So, no, I'm not particularly excited by what I've seen so far.
What's the point of making a 3D Mario more like 2D Mario if there's little to differentiate the experience?

Alot of 2D mario fans are selfish, even though they have gotten a ton of games built for them they want 3D Mario games to play like 2d mario as well at the cost of 3d mario fans even though they have an insane amount of games that are like 2d mario or are 2d mario.

No, I prefer the linear direction, but I find the NSMB games pretty boring, the 3D team actually puts efforts in their games, and I prefer their games way over those of the NSMB team.

You can say you prefer the 3D Mario games without having to imply that the 2D developers are lazy. Most of the NSMB games are fucking fantastic 2D platformers the likes of which very few games in the genre can touch. Their creators are in no way lazy.

The NSMB games are good, and I'll keep buying them if they keep coming out, because I still get enjoyment out of the Mario mechanics and good level design.

But the NSMB series does just the bare minimum to be good IMO. They can have much more interesting powerups, themes and music(both so horribly overused), etc. I remember reading an interview which stated that they went back and made better backgrounds for NSMBU because they were inspired by Retro's DK game. It just feels like they are going through the motions, I don't know what's going on with the 2D team, maybe Nintendo should give something else to them and put some people in the 2D team that are actually inspired to work on 2D Mario. 2D Mario deserves better than this, there are fan games out there that are much more exciting. Maybe it's Nintendo's fault and they aren't letting them go crazy, or don't give them enough budget, I don't know.

I'm the opposite and wouldn't touch another 3D Land/World, or god forbid, NSMB Switch at this point.

Very excited by what I see so far with this 3D Mario.

Super Mario 3D World felt like the true evolution to Super Mario World and it's the greatest multiplayer 3D multiplayer platformer I've ever played. Yes, I played the whole game with others and yes, I know the title says "3D" World.

NSMBU had like...1 background that was any interesting, and it was only used for 1 level

Honestly, the biggest offender from the NSMB games is the music and I can't wait for Nintendo to finally give 2D Mario the same musical treatment they give basically ever other of their franchises nowadays. It's insane it took this long, though.

The Van Gogh level is the only level with an interesting look yeah, the rest has been done before, like three times.

Yeah, the music is a big dump on your fun when playing those games, I don't understand that ''secondary'' series like DK, Kirby and Yoshi(except for the 3DS one) get the much better music treatment than their main 2D series. It's weird.

This game looks absolutely gorgeous. Cannot wait to see more of it. This might quickly become my favorite Mario game (and platformer, by extension)

What are you even talking about? You're almost seeing this as a civil war between two fractions of Mario fans. Now we know why recent Mario titles have less story, because you've lost the plot.

Also the 2D Mario titles aren't a substitute for 3D Land/World. Just because the latter plays closely to the 2D rules (powerups, one objective levels, timer) doesn't mean they play the same. They both provide different experiences. Being a fan of 3D Land/World has nothing to do with thinking 2D games are superior.

Since NSMB we've had four 2D Mario platformers and four 3D Mario platformers (not including Mario Maker). No one is taking away your games.

How many of those 3D Mario games were expanding on the principles and core gameplay/exploration loop as Mario 64 without sacrificing everything for accessibility by wider audiences/making the games extensions of their 2D brothers? ... SMS barely qualifies if you include the secret levels too.

lt has everything to do with that. I'm not sure how you've missed all the posts shitting on 64/Sunshine/Galaxy and praising 3D World in comparison for being truer to what a Mario game should be. This is also why l've always found these outraged reactions at the "not a real 3D Mario" thing so ridiculous. People would complain about that and in the same breath argue that 3D Mario games before 3D World weren't "pure" platformers but some sort of half arsed action adventure games and that it's a good thing Nintendo finally abandoned this style to focus on what Mario should be. The lack of self awareness is astounding.

I'm replaying SM3DW at the moment and yeah, it's not very replayable for me for more than half an hour. I don't feel the magic compared to past 3D Mario games. It's bite-sized, very small levels, no visual consistency within a world, just a succession of abstract levels without any link between them, it doesn't feel like an adventure, the isometric or side view isn't very good for immersion and the boss fights seem rushed.
Glad the new game seem to try to create a coherent world with style and atmosphere.

I actually agree with that bit but I see it in a different direction. The Galaxy games were already pretty linear, but they're still significantly different from 3d World since there were open stages too and the stages could have multiple goals, rather than all being focused on reaching a certain location. 3d World is certainly a purer platformer, but that doesn't make it better.

What other 3D multiplayer platformers are there? The closest thing I can think of is that Ratchet & Clank game and I don't think that really fits into the "platformer" category, especially not compared to Mario gameplay.

It depends on what part of Mario 64 you're looking at. They took levels like Thwomp's Fortress and the Bowser levels and focused on that type of level design rather than levels like Hazy Maze Cave. The difference is, instead of returning to the equivalent of Thwomp's Fortress for another goal, they've made those optional collectables like green stars. And in return we get a larger count of unique levels.

And those bonus levels in Super Mario Sunshine are the most likely cause for moving away from the more exploration based gameplay, since the popular opinion of the time was that those stages were the best parts of the game. Galaxy was oft described by many as an evolution of Sunshine's bonus stages.

(Funnily, Nintendo touted Galaxy as the true sequel to Super Mario 64)

We getting 64-2 fam!

Sunshine was 64-2 in a lot of ways, but I'd be extremely pleased if this also hearkened back to the adventure-style first two 3D games. Taking nothing away from the two Galaxy games, they were just as good (but different), but after two NSMB games in 3D, I am so ready to see something like 64/Sunshine again. Hell, I was ready in 2003.

Hopefully is another linear 3D Mario. I want my platformers with focus on platforming. (also next year we should have Yooka Leylee for that collectathon itch.

NO!

It's been like 15 years...hell, it feels like it's been like 15 years since the last open-world 3D platformer too.

Let us have something too. This and Yooka-Laylee would be great, it's felt like I've been alienated from the entire platforming genre for about a decade (with the exception of the Galaxy titles since they were something of a compromise and were so high-quality).

I bet the 3D Land/World series will continue even if this is something else (and I hope it is indeed something else).

I don't mind if its linear or if there's exploration but I want levels to have context and feel like I'm there.

Not random floating platforms in sky backdrops.

The sooner they can make a game wrapped around a giant sphere, the better.
