The Last of Us Remastered Patched for Pro/HDR Support

Evolved1

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
This is ridiculous. Sony must be laughing all the way to the bank with this crap. There's virtually no difference. And, what little difference there is is neither better or worse. Has it really come to this?

It's was a great looking game on PS3 and is still a great looking game on PS4, regardless.
Sony is laughing alright... with the rest of us.

I noticed the film grain shows up on mine when I change the device source type to anything other than PC.

On my Samsung i can hit Tools on the Input when I bring up the source menu and change it to PC. that disables all post processing done by the display

Hmm may have to try PC mode. I have a Samsung as well. KU6300.

How did you 2 get film grain effect?

May just be some weird processing on my TV. I know TLoU has some bonus filters but I don't have those enabled. I was going crazy trying to find an option to turn it off. I might've missed overlooked something on my TV settings. I know there's some kind of TV settings that give it the film grain look.

If anyone has the 50ju7100 samsung I've confirmed the last update gave it hdr support. Which i was skeptical because of the hdmi hub... So I'm pretty happy my best buy $750 50in tv is 4k hdr :)

How is the hdr on the ku6300? I'm debating on that vs the x800d since there is a $250 differences atm since the ku6300 is on sale.

not real HDR hence the issues. XD800 is cheapest 4k HDR 10bit set with KS7000/8000 being not too far away depending in market and with higher brightness to boot.

As much as I know KU* samsungs have 8 bit panels so it is emulating HDR.

Both have similar peak brightness, with the edge going to the Samsung. Neither meets HDR10 standard for peak brightness, but very few TVs do, in 2016. Neither has local dimming. but the 6300 lacks wide color gamut.

Its still a nice TV, for certain, but to have full compliance with HDR10 standards, you need to look to TV starting at more than 1k for 55 inch.

I would say, for the price, it's a nice gapstop to have if you plan on buying a much better TV later in the future. It's serviceable but it doesn't give me that "holy crap, I feel like I'm literally in the movie" feeling that the other TVs do. However, my only HDR content so far has been Deus Ex and TLoU. I personally don't think the extra 250$ isn't worth it for the x800D because I plan on buying and waiting for the newer models.

That doesn't sound right. Taking a picture with a smartphone even with HDR+ on would just be doing the same job as the game engine was originally before HDR TVs, mapping the wide dynamic range to a narrower one. The smartphone just uses a different, more subtle algorithm. What the HDR TVs are doing is giving us something closer to the scene before a game engine or smartphone does the tonemap, and the missing contrast is vital to that.

We need OpenEXR capture support on the PS4. :)

Meh, it's pretty easy to imagine the missing contrast by assuming that the light will be a lot brighter for bright parts and the details will be more pronounced in darker parts. The smartphone does what is called bracketing in photography, combining several expositions into one LDR image. This is a rather solid way of representing HDR on an LDR display, it captures the color details and the only thing which is totally missing is the high overall luminosity of a HDR display.

Again, this thread proves without a doubt that off screen photos show the difference between LDR and HDR modes and this difference is pretty close to the real world difference.

Browsers can't render OpenEXR so you'd need to shrink them down to JPG/PNG manually and you'll still loose HDR data in the process.

I was wondering since rting has update their review of the ku6300 statinng it is 10bit now. They rated it pretty close to the x800d and now I'm left wondering if I want to spend $250 more on the x800d or the ku6300 at $250 less.

I'll likely wait for the x800d to go on sale hopefully since its a solid hdr tv for its price.

I don't think this is the type of things that'll come across well in screenshots. You have to see it in person. I recently went into a FRY's specifically to see content HDR content. I wasn't all that impressed with the LCD panels and then the salesman made me turn around to see the OLED panels. Those OLEDs are damn impressive.

Just got home and trying on a 60 inch KS8000 bought solely for Xbox One S and PS4 Pro.

Will try to post pics

30FPS? Lock it or don't touch it?

What does it do

if you click on the little question mark on the panel of that label box, rting states that they label 8bit panels that simulate 10bit colors as 10bit panels. That box is very misleading because it is still an 8bit panel and simulating 10bit just isn't the same.

Wow. Definitely the worst implementation of HDR I have tested on our suite so far. Jezuz.

Well that's good news. Glad it can be better!! I think it looks pretty darn good though!
But I think Tomb Raider will really show it off!!

I was debating between the KU6300 and X800D. I went with the 43KU6300 for $399.99 shipped. My KU6300 has an AUO panel, as the box code reads AA01. Looking up panels on the panellook, all of AUO's 4k 43" panels are 10-bit capable, so it adds up. The X800D has been reported to have an AUO panel as well, so it's likely they both have the same panel. The supporting electronics/processing of course will be very different. It looks like the 800D performs much better with HDR sources.

I think the X800D better overall, but I'm not really hyped on HDR until I can have an OLED set that's affordable. I also prefer direct-lit backlights over edge-lit backlights as they're much more uniform typically.

If I were to get an HDR set, I'd get a Vizio P series. Their local array dimming is superb. They're also apparently working on reducing HDR input lag to more acceptable levels.

Ya its trash.
First time I got to the 3rd tv in a row for testing and stopped everything thinking something was majorly wrong.

If it results in a smooth 10-bit gradient result on a static image, I can't see why this is a bad thing.

Yeah I just saw, also I've read the x800d is 8bit+ FRC too but the panel tech is better so it's pretty much the same as 10bit as it can produce the same color rage as 10bit.

Testing for all HDR titles is done on 4 tv's
So you aren't seeing the implementation? I don't get it.
I wish. Instead it just looks horrible. Bringing over a pals PS4 to see if its a source issue. Replaced all cables. But if that's this games version of HDR once again we are looking at a situation where the dynamic metadata, even on a title like this, might be needed.
Then again since Gears, Forza, and Shadow, and the couple NDA titles I have been testing have all been a bit different from one another its not like its unheard of.

This may already been known, but Rhe Last of US also outputs at BT2020 color range in HDR mode. Just tested this on my Sony XBR65X850C. This is really good news because we are getting both HDR and Wide Color Gamut on the normal PS4. The Xbox one S only does HDR, but does not give you the Wide Color Gamut I believe unless something has changed.

SO there is no reason why you would not want to us HDR mode. I would also assume this is true for the PRO. The Combination of 4K, HDR and Wide Color Gamut is what makes the picture jump off the screen.

I am sure you have done your homework on this, but have you checked all your boxes? PS4 full/limited output, PS4 HDR auto, Color Auto, etc. proper TV settings, the game instantly recognizes that you are connected to an HDR capable TV?

Ya its just a poor implementation. It happens as we have already seen with other games each is a bit wonky so far.
Once the good stuff gets shown it will be nice to talk about it.
And hey free option. Not a bad deal.

Back on track. And yes nice to see WCG though its presence here is muted.

Isn't it self explanatory? Not sure why anyone would select that setting tbh.

When playing at 60 FPS without the lock enabled, you will encounter shadows with high aliasing (blocky edges), and sometimes even shadows missing altogether. With the 30 FPS lock enabled, the edges of shadows are much smoother, and shadows will appear on certain surfaces.

Interesting, for a website? What 4 TVs?

Yea reading this thread has really put me at ease. Cause I am just really not seeing much of a difference aside from it being washed out (I have patched in HDR so all HDR looks a bit washed out).

Consulting devs and pubs as well as my own reviews.
Right now a OLED65B6P, Sam8000, and 2 early models.

What TV and Patch version? Or at least what TV model?

That is just such a terrible compromise. But then I love me some shadows.

Can anyone answer if dynamic metadata is already in place on your display (once it's available) will some of the content that has problems now benefit or does it need to be encoded taking that into account?

I think you are asking...if content needs a patch if it was released prior to dynamic metadata being setup next year? Signs point to old content not being improved and honestly there are tons of issues with the standard right now. No new mastering needed but that data doesn't seem to exist currently in HDR content.

I have this exact same tv and I don't agree at all.
I have both my regular HDMI setting on BT.2020 and my HDR setting on BT.2020. There are a few differences as far as color settings between the two (HDR at Max and HDMI at 60) and the regular in HDR mode looks much more vibrant as opposed to washed out.
What particular section of the game stood out to you?
There were a few that I thought looked better at first but ultimately regular looked better

I would feel uncomfortable saying its black crush but its not great either.
I hadn't heard about the black crush issue until I read some twitter feeds and seeing a huge number of folks reporting it. That might be separate from just a poor implementation.

Can someone with the ks8000 let me know there settings for TV and ps4. Not sure I am seeing any difference.

I have the KS8000.

My settings in HDR:
Backlight: 20
Brightness: 45
Contrast: 100
Sharpness: 0
Color: 50
Tint: G50/R50
Digital Clean View: Off
Auto Motion Plus: Off
HDMI UHD Color: Make sure this is set to On for the HDMI input going to your PS4.
HDMI Black Level Setting: Low
Dynamic Contrast: Off
Color Tone: Warm2
White Balance: 2-point (only changes for me RGAIN -2, BGAIN 4 - this can vary per panel)
Gamma - 0
Color Space: Native

I set the PS4 RGB Range to full. The picture looked pretty a bit washed out on "Automatic" and didn't really have much of the brightness/contrast improvements I'd associate with HDR content. This is apparently known for the Samsung set (there's a thread running around here about it). .Setting the RGB Range to full really brought the beauty of the game out for me.

I had to set the RGB range the same for Deus Ex to display properly on the PS4. Without making that change, Deus Ex looked /terrible/ with a super washed out picture and some strange artifacting around light sources. In that game I had to change the HDMI Black level to Normal which is supposed to match the full range settings on the PS4. In this game, setting to normal washes the picture out. Not quite sure I understand why that's happening here? Either way, Sony needs to look at what the hell is up with the RGB setting and how it plays with certain TV's.

With the settings above though and the changes to the PS4's RGB, I found the improvements to be quite nice. It's not the best HDR implementation I've seen but its a pretty substantial difference over the game in SDR, IMO.

I have last year Sony X8000C (in Indonesia) and I can't get the HDR to work, now I'm not even sure if the TV support HDR or not. from Sony Indonesia official website, on the page for this TV it's said that there are firmware update to enable HDR. and I've also try download some HDR demo video and play it on the TV with USB stick, I assume it worked because HDR video locked my picture setting so I can't change it when I played HDR video.

there's also HDMI setting on my TV that I can change between standard to enhanced, where enhanced is for 4K HDR video. I already turn that to enhanced but TLoU still can't turn on HDR. :(

That might be separate from just a poor implementation.

Are you talking about how some darker scenes can tend to burn towards orange unless you turn down the colour saturation or just the overall limited range available in this game?

Deus Ex Mankind Divided does as well on PS4.

If you have an XB1 S, Gears 4 and Forza Horizon 3 support HDR as well.
