Did you become a Final Fantasy fan pre or post FF7?

Pre FF7. Grew up playing Dragon Warrior I-IV on NES. Fell in love with the super nintendo era of Square RPG's...truly was an amazing time (Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, FF6).

Was completely blown away when FF7 came out. Special memories...probably why its my favorite video game of all time.
It was such a gigantic leap forward from FF6--graphically, presentation wise. Definitely set the stage for the next era of Final Fantasy games (and RPG's in general).

Use to stay up late on the weekends and my brother and I would watch my oldest brother play RPG titles on the SNES. I got a glimpse of FFII, the US SNES version, and thought it looked fun. Later on my bother bought the original for me on the NES so that was my first FF. I didn't know much about how to equip stuff and made it pretty far in the game without equipment. Got as far as the part where you get the canoe from the sages. My brother took a look at my equipment and wondered why I didn't equip anything. I have some fond memories of Final Fantasy on the NES. I use to worry going into dungeons because of the huge risk of dieing and losing everything I worked hard for.

FFVI was my introduction to the series and while I enjoyed it I didn't completely "get" RPG's at that age. FFVII was probably responsible for getting me into JRPGs in the 90's.

FF6 (FF3 over here originally) made me a slight fan, but I didn't play it until after FF7 came out and I didn't get very far.

I've been meaning to play the series for years now.

Played VI in he mid 90s. Love at first sight.

Played IV on SNES around summer 98
Then X in 2002, then V from a PS Collection, then VII later that year.
Then IX the year after, though beat that in 2004.
Edit: Played I on GBA in 2005.
XII in 2006.

Then XIII in 2010. Playing this killed my game boner.

Bought III on Android in 2013. I'm about 10 hours in?

Still havent gone more than 10 mins in VIII (no reason, really), and less time in II (cause it's II).

Post. That said, my first FF was XIII and it made me dislike the franchise. Then on Steam V was launched and after playing it I liked the franchise and started playing the other ones.

My first Final Fantasy was actually FF VIII and then I played the previous one (i.e. FF VII) and I liked it a lot more than VIII, even though it was quite a huge difference coming from that game with its much more improved visuals.

I then played through FF IX and it's one of my favourite games of all time due to the world, music, characters and overall charm. Been a fan ever since and remember being so excited for FF X and XII. Went back and played the more classical parts of the series (i.e. FF IV, V and VI) and I really enjoyed VI as it reminded me the most of IX in some way.

It was FF XIII and its awful sequels that made me question my love for the series. I really hope that FF XV delivers in some way... the anime series (Brotherhood) was really good and I appreciated the film Kingsglaive for what it was. The film really should have focused much more on some slower scenes though and not just on non-stop action. We'll see soon enough if the wait was worth it...

Pre FF7 with FF1 on the NES back in the day. That game was as hard as shit. That and Dragon Warrior was what my friends talked about.
FFVI was amazing. So many playthroughs and hundreds of hours sunk into that game over the years.
Then FF7 came out and everyone had to have it. The last game I enjoyed was FFX. FFXIII and IX didn't do it for me.
FFXV might make it where it would make or break it for me. If it sucks, there's no point hanging around. It would only be nostalgia for me for a series I once enjoyed.

Mostly pre VII, although VII's what made me love FF.

My brother and I started with the first, followed by IV and VI. I enjoyed the early games, but the series didn't exactly hook me. This may have had something to do with playing them jointly with my brother, since we had to share game time, we'd take turns, sometimes missing out on segments.

VII came out while I was in college. I finally had a console all to myself. VII was the first game I ever played where the story dug it's claws deeply into me. I stayed up way too late more nights than I should have, totally engrossed. After beating it, I went on to share it with my roommates and friends and it pretty much made up my year in gaming with the amount of time we all sunk into it. Those were the days. But I still love FF today, for better or for worse.

Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI are two of my favorite games of all time. I still play them every couple of years. I love all of those SNES era RPGs, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc.

I have never actually finished any Final Fantasy game after 6 with the exception of XIII, which I didn't hate as much as everyone else.

I was there since the first Final Fantasy on the NES, and I used to sneer at the FF7 crew as Johnny-come-latelys. Of course now, people who got started with FF7 have been with the series for almost 20 years at this point.

We pity the "my first FF was XIII" kids now.

I became a fan (kinda) post VII. Sort of.

I didn't like 7 or 8. Then I went back and played 6 and thought it was great. So I'm not sure what that counts as.

My first Final Fantasy was VII, my brother gave it to me with a psx. After that I played 9 & 10. Then I went back and played 1&2 and I think 4? On the GBA.

I love reading everyone's histories with the franchise, especially since everyone always seems to start in a different place, with a very different perspective. I'm another post-FFVII baby here. I think I must have gotten into the franchise a few months before FFX-2 came out, I remember seeing advertising for it. I saw FFVII at a video rental store, and rented it because I'd heard good things about it. Of course, I kept extending the rental for about three months! I bought a ratty pre-owned copy of FFX, later picked up X-2. I was on holiday with my family in another city when I saw a pre-owned copy of FFVIII in a gaming store, and then proceeded to waste a bit of the vacation playing it, whoops. Of course, I overlevelled everyone whilst being shit at junctioning, so I got stuck in the Lunatic Pandora with only one save file. It took me years to go back and restart it. I'm now obsessive about backing up saves and making multiple save files.

FFXII was the first mainline FF game I played on release, and I adored it, also played it for months. I bought my PS3 for the Japanese release of FFXIII, and with owning a PS3, was able to finally play FFIX, FFVI, etc. Of course, I've played a lot of the junky spin-offs, sequels, and sub-series along the way, and thankfully World of Final Fantasy has surprisingly been a very funny breath of fresh air after a bit of a prolonged shitshow in the spin-off department.

I'd love to play the SNES (hell, even the GBA) version of FFVI. Never played I or II, still haven't finished III, even though the DS remake was really charming. I need to finish V, too, which I really liked. I kept hoping they'd do mini-remakes for V/VI like they did for III/IV. Dang it, Square.

At any rate, I'm excited for FFXV, and to revisit FFXII via TZA next year.

Post unless you count super Mario rpg.

I didn't know what it was cause all the print ads just showed a bad ass Moogle. I did go back to them after having played 7, and definitely appreciate them, but there's something magical about 7

FFVII was the first one I actually played through myself. I had a roommate that loved the series and I watched him play through FFVI in the lead-up to FFVII.

I remember the tremendous amount of hype surrounding FFVII. It was featured on every magazine cover for months and the import impressions were ridiculously positive.

It was impossible to not be hyped about FFVII - even as a non-Final Fantasy fan.

Final Fantasy 6 (US number 3 for the Super Nintendo) for me baby! Never actually owned it for whatever dumb reason. That game is my white whale as far as collecting goes. I'll pick it up one day.

Was a fanboy and refused to get a Playstation for FF7 until christmas of that year and was like... Gotta do it!

My fist was FFX and it was my first jrpg as well I think. I can't even remember why I bought it. I loved it and wanted the same jrpg experience in other games since.

I've played a good few FF games since but I've only ever finished FFVII Crisis Core, my 2ND best FF. Zack Fair is my favourite character. I have this silly habit of reaching the end of a gane and stop playing. Come back to it years later and cant remember anything lol. Done this with FFXIII and FFVII (and other games too obviously like Onimusha, tomb raider, Paper Mario, and the list goes on..).

Pre. I didn't actually own an SNES, but I rented one and played FFVI (III) on it because of all the raves it was getting from magazines like EGM. Could not believe the level of storytelling in that game.

FFIII (kefka one) (so before)

loved that. Loved FF til about 12 (which I disliked - the auto combat) - then XIII just killed most of my interest.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
Super Nintendo boyz. Final fantasy 6 (well, 3 as it was known back then) fucked my world up, along with Chrono Trigger.

Well since the first FF i played was FF1 on NES i'll say pre. But they lost me as a fan after IX. Not even remotely interested in FF XV, IMO it looks absolutely terrible, bar the awesome graphics

My first FF was the original on the NES but I had no fucking idea what an RPG was at the time. Then a few years later I actually had a good sit down with Mystic Quest and FFVI (III) and it all clicked. Then FFVII dropped and the rest was history.

In Europe it was pretty much impossible to be a pre-FF7 fan as none of the games came out before it.

Post. In 2002, I finally learned that the sealed door in Monstro Town in Super Mario RPG opened up to a bonus boss that had the Final Fantasy IV boss fight. Checked the game out, and I became a fan after that. A couple of years later, I found the Flash movie Sega Fantasy VI, and got in on that.

Played 7. Thought it was great.
Played 8. Thought it was great.
Played 9. Thought it was great.
Played 10. Thought it was good.
Played 12. Thought it was a huge disappointment. Squandered potential.
Played 13. Thought it was thoroughly mediocre. No potential.
Played 4. Thought it was okay-ish.
Played 6. Thought it was okay-ish.

Edit:

Played 15. Thought it was great.

Post.

Started with 10, loved it. Wanted to know more.

Then played 8 with my friend, but never was able to finish it.

I grew up, then I played 7, which was outstanding in term of jrpg.

Played all XIII games, but found them okay, near mediocre.

Then recently, returned to 10, finished it. Finished 10-2 as well.

Played 4, was not able to finish, but thought it was a really good game.

Played 9, finished it.

Played 8, finished it.

Replayed 7, finished it again.

I'm in the process to play 6, think it's really great.

Never touched 12, but next year it will change :D

And then, finally, yeah, I'm so excited for XV.

Started with SNES FF3 before playing ff7.

Since then, I've played all ff games except for the mmo titles and FF13:Lightning Returns.

As a European (French) FF VII was the first to be released in my country so... I know that some people were playing FFVI or Chrono Trigger imported but as a French who doesn't live in Paris... There wasn't any import shops where I was living then, so I didn't even have a place to buy those games!

So yes: FF VII ! It's still my favorite, with VIII and IX. PS1 era is the gold one for me, afterwards I played the old FF (all of them except III, dunno why) and I loved them, especially V and VI (I REALLY love FFV! Hell I'm gonna play it again right now), the only one I haven't finished from the main series is XII (dunno exactly why, waiting for the remaster on PS4).

FFVII was really an awesome game, I know a lot of people think it's overrated... I dunno I guess it's about opinions and tastes but at that time I was absolutly blown away, I sold my N64 to get a PS1 for FFVII at it's release and I never regreted it.

So yeah, I'm not in the "trendy undeground" clan but yes, it was FFVII, and I love it!

I became a hardcore FF fan when 4 was released in the US. I became a softcore FF fan after I played 7. Square partially made up for it shortly afterwards with Tactics, and there have been some good mainline entries post-6 (9, 12, 14), but it just wasn't enough to fully win me back.

4 was really something special for me. Not only was it my first FF game, it was also my first JRPG, a Christmas present with many fond memories tied to it, and was responsible for getting me into all of the other games Square released (as well as similar games from many other companies). My interest in Square and FF gradually declined however, and I became a lot more picky about which of their games I bought. I suppose in their pursuit of reaching a broader audience Square began releasing more and more games that didn't really appeal to me. But that's just reality, business is business after all, and I can't blame them for that.

I always find the love for 4 odd. I liked it when it came out, but even when I was younger I noticed the lack of any interesting development system (i.e. here's some characters, and all you can do is level them), and the ridiculous death not death story line.

Played it since the beginning in the US. Final Fantasy VIII was the first one I wasn't crazy about and I haven't played it since launch on the PlayStation. It's been one of my favorite series through the years but with XIII being weak and Persona 3 and 4 being so strong I don't know if I can say that anymore. Looking forward to XV still.

My first Final Fantasy game was FF1. I didn't become a fan of the series until FF3 on Famicom. That came a bit after DQ3 and hit all of the right notes for me.

VIII - Didn't really like it, but loved the music and cutscenes
IX - My favorite game in the series
X - Eh...

XIII and beyond - Caused me to jump off the Final Fantasy train

Final Fantasy 1 on the Nes is my second RPG of all time (dragon Warrior was my first). I can't remember how much time played on this one. 3 in US is one of my favorite RPG of all time. so much memorable moment and grinding I've done in this game.

Pre

I started with Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, and then 6 (3). I've played all of the FFs since 6 but my favorites in order are is 12, 8, and 6. My least favorite is probably 10.

Technically post.

I played through and really enjoyed the first on NES, but didn't play many games back then so my next Final Fantasy was VII.

Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil 2 actually are the two that got me more into games.

Pre, buddy - FF1. Before it I played DW1 and even Ultima VI which is a far, far more complex RPG. But I still really loved FF1.

I don't know about you guys but when FF2 on the SNES (IV) was released, I didn't know there was EasyType and HardType but I rememver that the game become exponantially harder after I became a Paladin. When I first got to the Tower of Zot (after having obtained the Earth Crystal from the Elf) I had my HP around 1000 and monsters starting hitting me for 300+ and would die often. Now maybe I was underleveled but did it feel like that for you guys as well?

I became a Final Fantasy Fan exactly with FFVII. It was also the 1st jRPG I played, so not only i became a FF fan i also became a jRPG fan after playing FFVII.

Reason FFVII is my number 1 game of all time. Not only i loved the game, it changed the way i look at games to this day.
