Memoria engine mod makes Final Fantasy IX actually playable

Good god, it's not THAT bad. It's like the fast forward mode, but you can pick a more moderate speed. What's with the ridiculous hate?

Honestly it would have been better if you showed off the skip-wait or the turn based options available since they don't alter the speed and make the game look weird but still make the battles faster.

The dogpiling in this thread is really confusing.

I've always wanted to speed up PS1 JRPG battles without destroying all of the music/sound effects. It's awesome to see a mod provide some control over the speed-up (past the option offered by SE's rerelease).

Would love having this kind of mod for when I get the urge to replay Chrono Cross.

The load times are bad, sure (and that was something the PSX was infamous for, at any rate) but the battle speed itself is fine.

No it isn't. Not to me. He selects Blizzard at 00:30 and Vivi does not cast it until 00:53. It took 23 seconds to cast a spell and a minute and 20 something seconds to kill three mook monsters in a random normal battle. That is pathetic.

I don't think it looks that bad. It's too fast for me though. Maybe a half speed or three quarter speed of that video would be much better for me.

Never thought I'd see the day people would defend long-ass load times and slow-ass random encounters, but this is NeoGIF.gaf.

I recently played Yakuza 1 and 2 on PCSX2, and being able to hit a button to have the game run at double speed was an absolute godsend. Sure it's nice to see what the game originally looked like, but when you're getting into endlessly repeating, unskippable stuff, I'll take anything I can get to speed it up. Especially in a JRPG, where your overall playtime is inflated by hour upon hour of sitting there watching the same unskippable animations over and over. Why not cut down the tedium?

Cant believe so many people are fine with FFIX's battle speed, legit shook here. This is madness.

I would only use a fast forward on the trash mobs, but in those fights I couldnt care less what the speed up actually looks like, so the basic fast forward SE offers would be more than enough for me. For the tougher/unique fights, stock speed only for me

People even consider OoT the best game of all time today, what's so surprising that people are fine with FFIX's battle speed?

Chrono Cross already has that

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

Nostalgia goggles probably.

Heck I played OoT in 2011 (for the very first time) and I thought it was slow and a bit boring, not to mention it hasn't aged well.

It was always "on par with" VII and VIII (better in the latter case), and the speed issues with battles are definitely there but I've always felt they're overblown. Plus, the battle camera skip (which you didn't even experiment with before you started complaining) takes care of that pretty well.

Now if Memoria adds in the ability to tweak the UI to be at a scale more like the original and adds a texture pack feature, those are things that I'll be interested in. This hyperspeed framerate buggery though, no thank you.

I have a mod which makes FFIX playable. It's called FFVIII.

You do this in every single FFIX thread, and it's still a far better game than FFVIII no matter what you say. Final Fantasy VIII is a war crime.

I feel like people in this thread never actually suffered through FF9's battles. Or if they have, they are immortals with infinite amounts of time.

The solution here isn't perfect, but it's a massive improvement over the default settings.

Also, FF8 is the worst FF.

If Final Fantasy IX comes to PS4 there's no doubt it'd get features like fast forwarding through gameplay (along with other features/cheats that make the game easier to play). The PS4 port of FFVII has it and when they brought over FFX to PC they added it allowing you to speed gameplay up 2x or 4x faster. They both sport a button that just gives you your limit break/overdrive whenever you want. For the older FF remasters, at least recently they seem interested in making they convenient experiences. Can't see myself using anything more than fast forwarding tho.

It sure does look awful in the video, but I'm sure once you are playing it and know what you are doing, it's great. I approve of this mod.

Can someone please hack/mod a shiny red button in the game?

So when i press it, the game skips to the ending ?
That would be so cool.

IX stans are a special bunch.

Its actually amazing to me since I played this game in the height of my FF fandom and had to stop due to how slow and tedious the battle system was, something which for all the faults of the previous games I never felt necessary.

I don't mind this actually, but another problem for me is the transition to and from battles. Wish I could just skip into a battle in an instant without having the swirly transition. The worst part about games with slow transitions like that is when you get into battles with enemies that aren't even worth fighting for the exp you get, so you are forced into a battle, have to wait for the transition, then run away every time. Complete waste of time.

I already knew OP was being hyperbolic before I even opened the thread but... wow. I have no words for these videos.

I'd rather have a mod to return the old battle UI instead of this mobile-ported garbage. That's a real issue for me

IX's OST was garbage compared to VIII. I can't believe that Uematsu considers that his Magnum Opus.

Well, I mean, he's just stating a fact, there's not much to consider or not believe

Benny Hill battle speed aside, FFIX's low quality textures & geometry just look weird and wrong at that high resolution.

It could use improvements, but what I saw in the video wasn't it. Fast forwarding the battles isn't the way.

I have played and replayed through FF9 many times and it never really bothered me, i must be a time lord lol.

But faster load times and battle speed would be welcome. Just not anything too fast that for battle, even that 2nd video of the OP at 25fps i didn't like.

Played on PS1/PS2/PS3/PSvita

Also FF8 and FF9 are awesome i don't care what anyone says ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There have been countless of people who've played Ocarina of Time well beyond after the PS2/GC/Xbox was released and still enjoyed it, just like Final Fantasy 7.

FF9 battle speed and load times were unbearable for me. Never beaten the game because of it. It played too terrible for me to beat.

I guess my expectations were wrong. I'd prefer if someone made a mod that added some type of Earthbound-esque rules to the combat. Where the game would use the lengthy transition to check if there's a 100% possibility that you'll defeat the battle without taking any damage, and just skips the fight entirely.

FFVIII does indeed have the innate ability to make anything else look comparatively great. The type of game that makes you crave some Lunar Dragon Song or Secret of the Stars.

Can't we accept that FF9 is a pretty good game overall, but its battle speed, transitions and the way it wastes the player's time at every opportunity are absolutely catastrophic?

No, because they aren't. Is the game a bit slow? Yes. "Catastrophically" so, to the point where the game is "unplayable"? No. That's hyperbole.

Nope. Don't agree at all. I finished the game recently only a few years back for the first time, so no nostalgia goggles or anything. Battle speed being too slow wasn't even something I thought could be a complaint until I saw this thread.

From your use of word "catastrophic" it seems like you were expecting Bayonetta combat speed from FF9.
