First downsampled 1080p screens from PS4 Pro (Titanfall 2)

I havent heard about a Pro patch yet, and i don't know if it was on the disk.

It would be funny if the current captures we have just gave a placebo effect of looking better. I think they look off for native 4K downsampled pics though.

To be perfectly honest with you, those look not nearly as sharp as the Bethesda screenshot.

While seeing a lot of difference there, I don't see much difference in these shots.

Other Pro shots from their press release:

I don't really notice much a difference with the TF2 images, but I'm still getting a Pro because I have a feeling FF15 will run like craps on normal consoles

On a relatively small screen the lighting is far better, textures are better, and it' s way cleaner overall. Imagine how that will look in motion on an actual TV.

I downscaled these in photoshop 4k>1080p Using nearest neighbor as that is what DF seems to be using when downscaling the horizon 4k shots to 1080p:

The right one is mine using nearest neighbor and it seems to look almost look identical(df looks a little better with less shimmering). But even if i use bilinear to 1080p the result is much cleaner than the posted pro shots. I don't understand.

Looks real good. Still don't know whether I can be arsed to spend the money to upgrade. Looking forward to more comparisons in the next week.

I think I used a poor choice of words. I can see the difference, but it's so small that I won't notice unless it was pointed out. Only when people pointed out the glove, or side of the boat, was I able to tell the difference.

All the other comparisons have been obvious but this last batch of Skyrim pics I feel the difference is much harder to see, especially if you didn't have a point of reference.

Sorry to point this out again: but if a game supports PS4 Pro from day 1 it must have the PS4 Pro Logo on the box.

Skyrim doesn't seem to have it:

Can someone explain this to me?

I'm impressed at the difference in the Titanfall shots in the OP and the first set of Skyrim shots (the last several confused me, as it's not clear where they are coming from or whether they've been suitably uploaded).

Everything just looks more vibrant.

As someone else pointed out, these are not identical shots with the same foreground, background, and weather, so it's a bit unfair. Nevertheless, the difference is obvious, even to a non-techy, non-graphics-whore person like me.

I'm encouraged to see examples of supersampling -- i.e., what sort of benefits we we can expect at 1080p. It's one thing to hear people talk about it. It's another thing to actually see it.

Why is it digital foundry doing this? Why the fuck are Sony not on message with this kind of stuff?
This whole thing is a botch, Sony should have been releasing stuff like this for the last month since it's reveal.
Listening to PlayStation podcasts the hosts don't know if a Pro is worth it without 4k and watching Shawn Layden on Geoff's show, it seemed like the company is terrified to rock the boat of their already installed fanbase.

It's nuts.

I agree, they could've/should've been much more aggressive with pushing the benefits for 1080p owners (i.e., the overwhelming majority). Otoh, you can see why, even in this thread:

Only had my PS4 a year and now it feels redundant.

This is not a great feeling.

They don't want to leave 40 million customers feeling this way. I still think they're being too cautious, but oh well.

Yes, thank you. The previous pro owner used google:
https://photos.google.com/

Here is the interesting part: The screens should be around 30mb at least for the forest one to match the one bethesda posted.

Here are the Skyrim 4K locations. Couldn't find the exact forest location in Riften - would appreciate any kind of help here. As always, it's virtually impossible to get the same weather conditions, just like in the promo shots. I don't know if it makes any difference, whether I'm using a 4K TV or not but here it is...

Looks really good. I'm still hoping many games like Bloodborne and Driveclub eventually get an update. As it stands nothing I own would benefit from PS4 Pro.

It has a "Supports PS4 Pro" sticker on the front cover. At least in the EU retail version.
Printing of the game was done a while ago.

I know this is off-topic, but do DVI-HDMI 4k cable exist? My monitor does not have HDMI and only DVI, which I'm was using a DVI to HDMI cable that only supports up to 1080p. I really want to have everything ready before buying a PS4 Pro.

Edit: I just found out Amazon Basic cables are 4K capable!

So if I have a 1080p and run the game in 4k mode it will downscale and look like this?

1080p TV users will always get downsampled image when playing game rendered in 4K on a Pro. Note that some games [RotTR, Nioh] also have optional 1080p60 rendering modes, while rare ones are only focused on 1080p rendering [Paragon].

You can select "4k" mode only on a 4k TV. On a 1080p device you need to set the settings to this res and if there is no extra mode for 1080p than the Pro will render internally at the games highest native resolution and output a 1080p image downsampled.

Edit: thanks, these look to be native 4k, so what's up with the 1080p mode?

I'm not versed in this so hopefully someone can explain this. Why is it that games need to be specifically programmed to use Pro enhancements? Why doesn't it work like PC where everything is just scalable (dunno the right term) to whatever your machine's specs are?

Nothing about these screens tell me why this is worth the extra money I am required to spend on both a 4K TV and second PS4.

But hey, I appreciate the rest of you who are actually buying it for funding the real next generation of consoles. Get used to 2-3 year stop gaps between generations.

Won't take too long for me to get used to good image quality.

Nothing on these screens in OP is targeted at 4K TV users. This is thread for users who game on ordinary 1080p TVs.

We are discussing the obvious differences between sub-1080p version of Titanfall 2 on base PS4 and much clearer 1080p+ and then downsampled image quality from a PS4 Pro. Some here are considering an upgrade, and some are considering what PS4 version to buy this holiday since price difference is not large.

I was just able to preorder a pro at Target for $326 online. So pumped :) They have a 10% off kid's wish list ]coupon that applies to everything, and a rep manually applied my 15% off registry coupon. Woot!

Correction, it's not a cartwheel coupon. It's the Target Kid's Wish List App that gives you it!

Fine by me, 3 years between consoles seems good, more power and better graphics faster for people who only play on Consoles.

At very least, the game will have a file that needs to be changed that tells the engine what parameters should be bumped in quality. That way the developer can get the settings balanced for looks and performance. On pc, you may expect games to just scale but here and there you will find a certain setting on a certain gane on a certain system that makes stuff run shitty. Requiring hand tuning, testing and certification for the pro patch ensures quality. Or at least ensures that the quality is in the hands of the developer.

First I open these images on a big screen and notice instantly the difference.

After that I open on my 5.5" smartphone and I barely notice any difference.

Very interesting how the screen size is important too to notice the gains of a stronger machine.

Just made some more comparison pics. Don't have a 4K TV so these images are supersampled 1080p on the Pro.

Sorry for the bad ESO comparison as it is hard to get the time of day right - the weather and time of day are server-bound. I also changed the FoV several times, so that might be off as well.

Does that work for you guys?

It looks like there are some higher graphics settings at play in the Pro shots. A few of the Skyrim shots look like they have more foliage density, along with a downsampled image. That lost ESO screen def has different graphics settings.

Nice bump in clarity there.

Your missing the point, you don't have to see this machine as worth the money, that's why slim is being sold concurrently.

You should not think you are being forced to see the differences.

Also, there is condescension from your post about us being funders for the 'real next generation'. This was never a new gen to start with, as Sony doesn't consider it so, and MS doesn't care about generations as a concept in general anymore so i don't know what your point is.

I'm not versed in this so hopefully someone can explain this. Why is it that games need to be specifically programmed to use Pro enhancements? Why doesn't it work like PC where everything is just scalable (dunno the right term) to whatever your machine's specs are?

Because consoles arent PC's. And games aren't always built to be scalable between hardware.

Drive by shitting at it's best.
Pro is not there to cannibalize or repress PS4. It's a device for a small audience that helps Sony making more profit on hardware. This isn't the smartphone market (yet). It's an additional device for people who care for image quality. You are obviously fine with what standard PS4 offers, so no need to feel forced to buy a Pro.

PC games are made to be scalable in the first place. They'll be tested on everything from a core2duo to the latest i7.

Consoles have been fixed spec/fixed and the game is optimised for that. It's why they generally run better than equivalent PC hardware.

Thank you. Seems some ppl aren't even reading the thread title..

Someone earlier also said they don't think it's worth the money.

That's not the point of this thread. Whether it's worth it is debatable. Is there a noticeable difference isn't.

"I appreciate the rest of you": Obvious troll is obvious.

I mean, the topic of this thread is "First downsampled 1080p screens from PS4 Pro" but you still had to bring up the "required" 4K TV. Shoo.

Shit, this thing is going to make me play TLOU a fourth time through, and UC4 a third.

Trying to hold out for black friday on a KS8000 but I'm getting antsy. I preordered the console a while back.
