Wii U HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/apps/games/stuff]

According to the libretro forums, keep your expectations low regarding how quickly N64 will be supported on Retroarch Wii U:

Too bad, the F-Zero X Expansion Pack is my number one wish for a console-based emulator.

I wouldn't get my hopes up with Dreamcast emulation if I were you... We'll get PS1 at most, MAYBE N64 if we're lucky.

That will be pretty shitty considering the Wii has PS1 emulation =P

The compatibility is not perfect but if the WiiU only manages to increase compatibility holy shit what a wasted retroarch considering the WiiU has a vWii that you can already play Crash Bandicoot =P

PS1 on Wii/vWii is slooooooow.

Hopefully on Wii U it's full speed?

Yeah but I think ps1 full speed being the biggest achievement of WiiU's retroarch is being VERY pessimistic

I know there are more than polygons on emulation (cps2/3 and mame still have some problems on wii) but I think we can dream with Dreamcast

Porting PCSX2 seems like an impossibility since that relies on traditional 128-bit SIMD on CPU (and for good PS2-HW based reasons), lack of which is one of the most infamously annoying properties of GC/Wii/WiiU family (though it got mostly bad with Wii U which was supposed to get PS360 ports). For the very same reason I find idea of Dreamcast emulation mostly implausible, but in case of Dreamcast the rest of the system is currently understood to be relatively clean so it would be somewhat less mind-boggling if someone crazy enough would make it work.

Possible? Sure, with no great compatibility. But that would hinge on somebody willing to put in the effort. Not likely for what would be a massive undertaking. I'd say decent to good PS1 emulation is a reasonable guess if the community doesn't dry up right away.

Welp, time to test that snes9x elf.

Edit: Holy crap, they've added loads more since I looked a few hours ago. PC Engine, Neo Geo Pocket, Genesis, Virtual Boy!

SNES9x is already in pretty good shape for something in an alpha state. Saving/loading states is rough though. Tried the GenplusX and it just lands me on a black screen.

Played a bit of Mega Man X, and wow. Even at this early stage it's super impressive. It's at the point where you know some people will call it "fine". Just one or two audio hiccups, a little bit of slowdown where there shouldn't be, and I couldn't stop the screen being stretched to 16:9. But overall? Super impressed.

Do I need to fool around with the nand stuff or does the oldy exploit work for Retroarch?

Works fine using the browser -> HBL method.

@WiiUBru retweeted:

What kind of nice days for the WiiU Scene. coldboothax sources, retroarch, wuppacker, working homebrew launcher .rpx and probably more!

That means HBL icon on the Home Menu :)

Edit:

Hexkyz, the guy who cracked the HENkaku King of the Hill challenge, has set out to make a Wii U CFW!

Nonetheless, I came up with some creative ways of squeezing all the necessary steps into a single payload and managed to get it working.
This means hexFW is launched solely from the browser without the need for installing or using HBL!
Of course, this came with a small cost: it's very likely that running the exploit will crash once. This is due to how I'm locating a target thread inside the IOSU to modify it's stack pointer. However, if you reset the console it is guaranteed to launch the second time. After the launcher runs, the actual CFW will be booted into the system from the SD card.

Excited at progress. My Wii U is boxed away on FW 5.3.2. Hope some 3DS like CFW can come about in next month or so. Until then things seem a little messy/risky to screw around with. I would like Nand backup first.

Perhaps other people could chime in here, but I believe that now is as good a time as any to update to the latest firmware. That is because everything homebrew related is being made with 5.5.1 in mind and I also believe the latest firmware just has higher compatibility / less problems. At least I remember reading comments to this effect on GBAtemp anyway.

It's your call in the end.

I would highly recommended updating to the latest firmware too. This is the one everyone's playing with, you really don't want to miss out on updating to it and finding out Nintendo have put a new one out that fixes everything.

(Note: The chances of this seem slim, they haven't updated in soooo long, but why risk it?)

I suppose this is true it's just hard not to live by the homebrew scene motto of never update your FW. There is always that chance a lower FW is needed for full access to something.

Probably not in this case though as it seems whatever exploit is used is still viable on 5.5.1. Can this be confirmed? I mean I know the SD card/browser method everyone is using right now can be done on 5.5.1 but what about whatever team salt is working on?

Awesome stuff. This guarantees the Gamepad not being junk.

RetroArch has been my #1 dream for the gamepad since I first bought the system. I'm glad that this is happening at the end of the Wii U's retail existence, I hope it means Nintendo won't meddle with things too much now. I've really enjoyed my time with the Wii U, BotW will be fantastic, but now I'm really looking forward to its second life. If it gets a little bit of TLC it could be the replacement OG Xbox emulator box that I've been waiting years for.

Alright, I'm pretty interested in all that has happened in the past few days with this. Just to make sure I read everything correctly, RetroArch is a launchable home menu icon, that has NES, SNES, GB, GBC and apparently Virtual Boy cores? All from an SD card?

Not exactly

each emulator is one separate app, and it must be launched using the webkit exploit. No home menu icon. Yet

Concerned about dinosaur erection.
Need some help. Got HBL working but once I re-insert my SD card with my SNES roms, it locks up. What am I doing wrong?

GBA worked perfectly .... Neo geo Pocket needed to hold power for a few seconds twice =/

...why are you taking out the sd with the emulator ?

It needs the sd with the emulator to ... load the emulator =P

No.

Retroarch is releasing the alphas of alphas 0.01 version of cores as separate launchable old "site->homebrew from sd" way.
Homebrew as a home menu icon is COMING VERY SOON. This will be the "accept the usb slot" kind of homebrew

My Retroarch settings from vWii were actually messing with things on the Wii U side, so renaming RetroArch on the root of the SD card might help if it's there. Controller mapping was completely screwed up For me at first, and fiddling with core settings broke things pretty easily.

I've got the loadiine launcher wirh the sd card wii u game launcher. What else can we do now? Can we install a launcher from the main menu without the browser hack and also play games off a hdd?

How do the emulators work? Are they fine or still in very early stages? I wonder if we could apply filters to the roms, making them look better than official Wii U emulators, haha.

Well they're version 0.01, so tend to have issues, run a little bit slow, etc. But for a first day compile, at this early stage, they're superb. Of the few I tested, mGBA felt like the best. Pokemon was a constant 60 with no weird issues, though it's still forced to full-screen 16:9 with HW filter and no way to alter it yet.

I think things will get amazing very quickly.

Great to know that. I will be patient and wait a little more.

It's amazing how fast things are going lately with the Wii U Homebrew.

I have my DNS changed to the one in the OP. Should I put it back to normal or do I keep it?
