Every year is great for indies, but 2016 has been exceptionally awesome

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain
Is this based on an old pen&paper game book from the eighties? I remember reading a book with the same name when I was a kid.

I just got around to UnderRail, it is fantastic, it full released December 2015, I'm counting it.

Regarding completely legit releases though, I will say that Momodora cemented itself a special place in my heart.

*fingers crossed for Cosmic Star Heroine to make the cut*

My backlog just got bigger, thanks More_Badass. :D

I love that spread of genres in that list. Considering how many different kind of indie games there are, game news outlets should really give monthly awards to them.

Didn't Steamworld Heist come out last December? I'm sure I played it through last Christmas on 3DS.

Great thread though- currently playing through Darkest Dungeon and it's really fitting as a winter game :D

@More_Badass
Just as an aside, I really appreciate what you do in raising awareness of smaller titles. Keep on keepin' on, etc :D

House of the Dying Sun is more Tie Fighter than Rogue Squadron, I take it? Does it run well near the minimum specs? I'm thinking of building a new PC soon anyway...

Owlboy and Momodora seem like easy recommendations, then. If you've got a Vita, Severed is amazing. Hyper Light Drifter, too.

Virginia might be out of your comfort zone, but it's a very interesting narrative adventure.

Thumper is just recommended for everyone to try out, and it's challenging as hell.

I looked at those but couldn't get past the graphics. I'm not into the retro visuals.

Pixel art isn't retro. As for the games, one is a tight action platformer with skillful combat and the other is a near-decade-in-the-making metroidvania with dual stick shooter elements, puzzles, and some adventure game DNA

I used to consider myself not a big fan of indies, but with titles like Salt and Sanctuary and Hyper Light Drifter I have been completely converted into one this year. Salt and Sanctuary made my top 10 all time this year. I love it so much.

I would have to say this year was a step down on the previous years. All the hyped indie games didn't really do it for me and I think it is because the scene is in a transition.

The teams, the tools and the tech has all improved, but the depth of gameplay hasn't really followed yet. This resulted in a list of games which are good, but nothing that demands to be in a goty list or seem like games I have seen before.

I think in the next few years we'll really start to see special games, at least to my taste.

I agree for some games, but don't tell me that you have played Furi or Thumper and still hold this opinion.

November
Owlboy
House of the Dying Sun
Dungeon Rats
Small Radios Big Televisions - 11/8
Planet Coaster - 11/17
Islands

SRBT looks cool. It is getting released tomorrow. I am intrigued.

Astroneer is slated for December, but considering the indie scene, you never know what might just appear out of the blue this month and next

December
Astroneer

I think December is a bad time window to release a game, due to the presence of Steam sales. So I don't expect too many remaining surprises.

By the way, I think you are missing Quern, planned for November 28, OP.

The Eyes of Ara was also an amazing Myst-like game.

Oh, hadn'f heard of that one

Between Witness, Obduction, Ara, and now Quern, this was quite the year for Mystlikes

This is the truth. Hope it continues.

Anyone complaining about there being only cookie cutter AAA titles and sequelitis must be blind at this point.

Severed as well, which came out in April for the Vita and iOS/Wii U/3DS in September. Probably my second favourite indie game so far this year after Salt and Sanctuary.

I've played these games so far:
The Witness
Firewatch
Unravel
SuperHOT
Inside
I also have Oxenfree and Deadly Tower Of Monsters that I'm planning to play soon. I absolutely loved The Witness and Inside, I found SuperHOT a really cool little game and Unravel was really adorable and fun. Firewatch ... not so much. Didn't worth the lauch price imo.
Anything else that I should buy that is available on PS4 or XBO?

The Witness was neat and Gunvolt 2 was unreasonably fantastic, but I have to say that's about all the 2016 indies I'll replay ten years from now. Many good games, but so few greats, to my taste.

Still though, the GOTY being an indie game is pretty cool, I suppose.

People forget about Gunvolt 2 because JP indies are completely ignored :(

It certainly is unfortunate that OP's list leaves out the GOTY 2016!

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Was kinda hoping to see Cosmic Star Heroine this year since tbh aside from Owlboy nothing really captivated me too much and there were a lot of fantastic non indie releases this year to distract me (DQ Builders, Xanadu Next). I wanted to like Furi since I love the aesthetic and the synthwave, but there were a few game design issues that kept me from playing.

Jeeze, yeah it looks like 8 of the 9 games on my GOTY list so far are indie games. That's pretty unusual even for me.

Inside will be played for a long time to come as a masterclass of how to nail dystopic storytelling through gameplay.

Oh boy. I might have talked too fast. OH BOY.

Edit: Hmm... Maybe not Miegakure, maybe a secret project. I feel as if I were playing Orwell when I spy on these conversations and try to make sense out of them.

The gameplay in Desync is somehow better than Bulletstorm and Doom with a fraction of the budget, and it might make 2016 as well.

It has been a terrific year for indies - and I don't think I've seen my personal GOTY mentioned which is Layers of Fear. I loved the atmosphere and story, and it really rekindled my love for horror games.

I also greatly enjoyed Oxenfree, and while I loved the visuals of Unravel I didn't feel the gameplay was quite what I wanted it to be.

At the top of my list to try are The Witness, Inside, Firewatch, Obduction, and The Turing Test.

Do you need to play any of the other Momodora games to play this one? Idk anything about the series but this game looks like something I'd enjoy.

Hey. Real talk. I was one of those closed-minded buffoons that wrinkled their noses at indie games. Yet as the "artistic flexibility/ risk taking" has tremendously decreased in the AAA space, I've found such comfort from Indie games.

I'm anticipating many AAA games, but man, to every 1 AAA game, there's probaby 4-5 indies. Especially with underrepresented genres....arcade racers for instance. Distance,Redout, and ex- Burnout devs. Melee focused titles like Absolver, Raiders of Broken Planet, and Furi. 3D platformers like FreezeMe, Mekazoo(well, more of a 2D sonic shoutout), etc. HoverROG, for Jet Set Radio fans, Transistor, Strike Vector Ex, list goes on etc.

So anyways I'm just grateful for all these games. I haven't bought a PRO yet, but I already have a list of great great indies to play! Feels like the PS2 days man :)

I would also suggest The Final Station and Epistory.

TFS is a great atmospheric survival horrorish / train management game. Short but sweet.

Epistory is a typing adventure game with a really lovely art style.

Very curious about The Final Station, how good is it?

Masquerada: songs and shadows was a great isometric rpg that was released about a month ago and is missing from the list.

i wanted to try the warlock game and dusters. dusters seems interesting but i am not sure about the gameplay.
