I don't think we'll see that many in January, but when you add in E3, I'd be surprised to see less than 15 new games announced next year. Of course, a number of these will be smaller titles.

They kinda need to show off more than just 'here's launch window' stuff or you run into the issue wii u had where they had to do that emergency january 2013 direct promising "hey no guys i swear wii u has more games coming out in the future, don't just play 'wait and see.'

You need to convince early adopters that the system isn't going to dry up after 6 months, you need to show them stuff that is coming later, even over a year away. Doesn't have to be gameplay trailer, but a tease, a title card, a cg trailer, anything is enough.

  • Show monster hunter double cross switch HD and then tease monster hunter 5.
  • Show smash bros and then tease more smash dlc
  • Show xenoblade X port and tease xenoblade 3

(not those things exactly, of course, but ) Just, let the audience know the system has a good launch and a good future.

Then at E3, show more detailed trailers for fall lineup and even more teases of what's to come that weren't ready in january.

I don't think 'saving stuff for E3' is a good strategy in this case. Yes it makes E3 a 'bummer' when you know most of the stuff already, but coming out of the gate as strong as possible trumps a good E3. if this were launching AFTER E3, then sure, make E3 for megatons, but it's not, it's launching before. "E3" needs to be in january, plain and simple.

as sad as that is, I wonder what else they can realistically release next year (before 2D Mario in December) besides Pikmin and a bunch of Wii U/3DS ports.

Maybe Animal Crossing? Would tie into the mobile game nicely. 2D Mario would be good, too.

Everything they delayed off they WiiU.

Besides isnt the rumour that the NS was supposed to release this christmas but was delayed to get more games ready?

I think it will start something like this.

March - Zelda, + system selling WiiU Ports (Smash, Splatoon, something Mario)

May - Mario Kart 9 (hopefully) a fully fledged sequel built on the MK8 engine

July- Retro Game

September - Pokemon

October - Luigi's Mansion

November - 3D Mario

December - Mario Party + Holiday Sales

That only leaves April and June unaccounted for, something smaller will likely go in each of those months, like a pikman or a new IP.

Also i seem to have forgotten to include a Fire Emblum game. One will likely release next year

You bring up some great points, but I do think Nintendo will save a couple games for E3. But yes, they need to show a ton of content in January, no doubt.

Oh they absolutely need to bring a couple of unannounced gems to E3 otherwise it ruins their momentum, but they *really* need to come out guns blazing on this one. They need to tell the lapsed nintendo gamer (or the ones felt let down by wii u) "don't worry, it won't happen again."

If they can't, I don't know what to say, other than they're in a lot of trouble. Again.

All signs point to them doing their best to prevent this:

  • Consolidating Handheld and Home console dev teams
  • Extremely weak year for Wii U and first party in general
  • NX not coming out til last possible minute this fiscal year
  • E3 being 99% zelda and some 3DS stuff and not much else.
  • Switch reveal teasing most of their big guns

Curious if Nintendo remains the dominant platform for Sonic. A really good Sonic game (ideally not compromised on the Switch) alongside some other diverse titles for winter would be a compelling combo for people who like Nintendo systems but sat out the Wii U.

ok maybe I should include 3rd party exclusive (even timed) collaborations in those 15 games

but yeah I expect more than 15 games being showcased and for a launch window release (hell, delay things to Q4 2017 for all I care)

out of those, Nintendo needs at least 5 announcements of major, new, AAA, earth-shattering, mind-blowing, in-house-developed games, (and those aren't the up-ports or Zelda)

I can see those 5 games realistically being:

.- a new 3d MARIO, (brand new, no up-port fuckery)
.- Animal Crossing
.- Retro's Game
.- Major "Switch gimmick" game (like Wii Sports or Nintendo Land)
.- Pikmin 4

and those are them and that's not enough if you ask me, I need more proof this thing won't see the usual nintendo drought.

If they would just stop the bullshit of dripfeeding Virtual Console games. Have the complete library (at least 1st party games) of NES, SNES, N64, GCN, Wii, GB, GBC, GBA available day one, and that alone is incentive enough to sell through the first few million devices in no time. The sooner they have 10 million devices in homes/pockets, the more viable the plartform will appear for 3rd parties.

Dream on, that's not happening at any console launch event.

so what are you looking forward too? 1, max 2 major games?

I mean, Wii U had NSMB WiiU and Nintendo Land.

those are two main, flagship titles on launch window and they did shit for the console.

Now you expect 5 new "AAA" games from Nintendo at the January event? lol

Well, after readying your 5 games I would probably consider none of them as "AAA". Maybe, Retro's game is AAA when we see it. Even 3D Mario I don't consider AAA.

There is kind of a weird point where it's hard to really look at the Sonic games on the WiiU and make any real judgement about how well the Switch will serve as the main "hub" for Sonic games. You had Lost World and Boom being flops, and while you can probably blame the WiiU's low install base for that, they were also bad games that very quickly gained poor word of mouth. Meanwhile, the WiiU port of Sonic Racing Transformed almost immediately caught up in sales (and seemingly surpassed?) to the 360 and PS3 versions despite being a late port, but that then begs the question of whether that was because Nintendo owners more reliably buy Sonic games or if it was just because SASRT was a good launch title that was both cheap and in a genre that people like on Nintendo platforms but wasn't yet occupied by Mario Kart.

I mean Nintendo really had to knock out the park if they want to have a chance, they come from a flop system, in an enviorement where third parties don't give a shit about them, they can't afford to sell the same Nintendo franchises all over again, Pokemon can help but not that much.

Perfect time to post my updated pic about the confirmed/heavily-hinted games, so the games that are the most likely to be shown during the 13th January event.

annoucenements, sure, I expect as much,

I even put a list of what I expect to have at the January event, you consider that unrealistic?

It came down to my definition of "AAA". When I think AAA and Nintendo I think Zelda and Metroid.

From your the list you have I can expect to see those too.

-Pikmin 4
-Retro's game
-3D Mario
-New IP
-Animal Crossing (not sure)
-new Pokemon game (not Pokemon Sun/Moon port)
-Monolith Soft's new game

That's more than enough from just Nintendo at a January event. I can see my list as a possibility. Those are all brand new original IP's. This isn't including Smash port, Splatoon port, Mario Kart port or Zelda: Botw.

I mean Nintendo really had to knock out the park if they want to have a chance, they come from a flop system, in an enviorement where third parties don't give a shit about them, they can't afford to sell the same Nintendo franchises all over again, Pokemon can help but not that much.

Like I told him it was my definition of AAA was different. Anyways I expect them to completely blow me away like I said before. I listed games I could easily see at the event. 5 of those games I'm hoping will be there. Again, that's only new original titles and not including the few Wii U ports, which will be enhanced.

Also, I'm expecting AT LEAST 2 brand new exclusive third party collaborations at this event.

-Beyond Good & Evil 2 with Ubisoft
-Final Fantasy VI remake with Square
-Mega Man whatever with Capcom
-Bayonetta with Platinum

I can't really think of any more, but those are a few off the top of my head. Again, they don't have to have video footage of these games. The least they can have is a picture with the name of the game and say "more info coming soon" like maybe E3.

You guys have to remember they have to save stuff for E3 too. E3 is only a few months after launch. I expect some of the games I listed won't be fully shown at all at the January event and will be held for E3.

I would add Android Cactus and Yooka-Laylee to the Indie section and that snowboarding game by Ubisoft to the 3rd party section..

Even if they're ports, they're not releasing three AAA games at once all in the same month. They don't even need to. It makes no sense.. Its better to have them spread out so Nintendo has no droughts lasting longer than 2-3 months.

Theoretically we can relax about this, as everything Nintendo puts out will be on Switch you effectively combine the libraries of the WiiU and 3DS as far as the release calendar is concerned.

For now though Nintendo are still supporting the 3DS, essentially as a fall-back position, so it remains to be seen if there are still 3DS exclusive game announcements to come, beyond those that were already in production.

I just got an email from amazon saying that the release date for breath of the wild is march 31st. Could this further confirm the march release date.

I wouldn't give any credence to a date of 31st. That just screams placeholder
Yeah. Sometimes placeholder dates get the month right though.

If a retailer lists a game releasing on April 30th for example, it means the game is likely coming out sometime in April.

So I believe the poster you quoted was trying to make a point that this is a soft confirmation of Breath of the Wild releasing in March with the Switch. Also, the BotW amiibo are coming out in March.

According to Famitsu, MHXX have 2 game directors.
So I think It will be 2 versions (3DS and Switch).

Will Capcom go the lazy route and just upscale a 3ds port, or will they use new assets? I'd rather just wait for a potential MH5 that uses new assets and HD.

Edit: Please not another MH3U

Given how easily scalable MT Framework is, it'll probably be an upscaled port with some additional online functionality (ala MH3U).

It's going to be a 3DS upport like 3U Wii U. They'll improve the IQ, framerate and texture quality, adjust the interface and hud, but it'll be the same game essentially. This is just a warm up to transition the audience for MH5 anyway.
