All-New Press Previews of Final Fantasy XV's First 5 Chapters

I'll go ahead and copy over my biggest response in the other thread since this one tends to outlast all the rest. And, well, because I enjoy talking with people here. It's becoming tradition at this point; this thread feels eternal. :p

If nobody has anything to say to it over here, 'tis cool; it just feels weird not expressing my thoughts toward the Edge article in the current mainstay thread!

I'm of a few minds on this.

1. One of the core "features" I've noticed of this community over my (relatively brief) time here is that when a collective mindset of ours wants to like an upcoming game, it's a kneejerk reaction we display in which we sharply criticize the first controversially mixed review, only to post sad reaction GIFs later on in which we solemnly acknowledge that so-and-so "had it right all along. ;_;" I think a few grammatical errors and problems of tone and context illustrated in Edge's article shouldn't be enough for us to disregard its message. Many of the glowing impressions articles in recent weeks have even been careful to note that it remains to be seen whether the style they heaped praise upon would manage to hold up. Please note: I am not directing this at anyone in particular. I love this community and its sensationalism is fun by its own right sometimes. And, heck, we are still amazing when it comes to quality analysis despite all that. But still. tldr; let's not crucify the author.

2. That written, I'm seeing the opposite in this thread as well. I've seen at least one post where a fellow has remarked that this confirms the plot is abysmal. Let's bear in mind that Edge is (in?)famous for being harsh in its review texts. It's kind of what they do. Please note that the author says emotional beats tend to ring "a little hollow" at times. The author did not call the plot a bust. The author said that, yes, the focus on character comes at the expense of a strong plot. But what Edge has historically constituted as "strong plot" has, at least in my estimation, been a pillar above the rest of the games journalism industry. So, I would argue the fact that the author said some positive things about the story and especially its cast is a good thing in and of itself. Just the same, though, we ought not jump to conclusions either way. It could be solid but flawed. It could be dreadful with a few redeeming lights. It could be the Second Coming. tldr; let's not take this all as gospel, either. Especially not in relation to plot.

3. It is curious the author's usage of the term "second half" given Tabata's remarks that the so-called latter half is in fact closer to the end. I've seen it said in this thread that perhaps this is as little as 30 minutes of game time. I don't think that's remotely possible, barring a numerical lapse in the author's judgment which would necessitate psychiatric assistance. No, I can't fathom this more linear and confined experience being half an hour long. It must stick in some prolonged fashion in order to have the author address it as half, erroneously or otherwise. My hypothesis: the linear path is less gameplay time by proxy, as the open world regions allow for dozens of hours of exploration and side content, but the linear path still corresponds to, say, Chapters 8-15 or so, because each chapter is a narrative episodic benchmark. This is something I've pondered for longer than just today, and it would explain the confusion.

4. Building on #3, I'd reckon that, if I am correct, there will in fact be only three, perhaps four, open world zones. I use this number because we know at least of a third, thanks to Active Time Report airings. However, it is my estimation that that third zone is perhaps smaller at least than Duscae, and there is no guarantee of a fourth. I would like to bring to evidence the following: we know from recent press previews that the first region is the first two chapters. Duscae launches the third, or close enough to that timeframe, at least. Perhaps around the fifth chapter or the sixth we enter another zone. Then around the eighth the plot, such as it is, attempts to shift into higher gear (whether because it truly wishes to do so or because the development team ran out of time along the way as Edge insinuates is possible). From that point, we are in a more linear world. tldr; I am gambling there are no more than four zones at the most, no matter what all the map analysis over the years has hinted. Later regions are marginalized from a gameplay standpoint.

5. I prefer linear. This last point is just me shooting the breeze with my own thoughts, but... it's the truth. I don't mind FFX's style at all. I adore XII's, as well, mind you. But FFX has a stronger focus to its narrative. Now, if you don't care for that focus, then I can see why you would dislike the game. And if you don't care for that linear aspect by and large, yeah, FFX isn't going to do it for you. But given the choice between the two, I trust FFX's style far more in delivering a quality plot with sufficient eventfulness. So, I am leaning toward everything I've read from Edge's article being a good thing overall. But I don't believe the author would be as (relatively) critical if they did not feel it is handled quite awkwardly. I think in the final telling we are going to receive an awkward game with some sophomoric approaches brought on by its development history and the uncertainty of its craft. But I think I, myself, am going to like it more overall in thanks to this latter-game change in philosophy. Wrinkles and all.

Apologies for the double post, but I wanted to raise awareness of this:

There's been some considerable confusion as to whether Edge received the full game, as FFXV's twitter handler initially claimed otherwise. That statement has since been replaced with one which "clarifies" that Edge was given a "longer preview" than other critics to celebrate their 300th issue. There's still some confusion at hand here but given Edge having specifically mentioned the game's conclusion I think maybe they were given, like, a 40-hour timer and Square might not have anticipated that they would race ahead to the finish line.

With the way so many developers/publishers restrict what can be talked about or shown in previews, I cannot imagine that they gave them potential access to the end and free reign to discuss it.

I'm mighty curious about the actual text of the article.

Why do you always try to force some narrative? Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's universally terrible. You do it in every rpg/anime Style related thread.
I mean it's not really forcing a narrative, do you expect any of these actors to be nominated for one of the plenty of acting or writing awards or for BAFTAs? Acting quality is universally one of the ways the JRPG genre has stagnated heavily behind the west. With even much lower budget games running circles in the writing and acting department. It's one of the main things people make fun of whenever a cutscene is playing. Because we're still unironically getting stuff like "What the honk?!" and "We're drifting....into the deep end." You'll also notice I never complain about Souls game, while still below the standard of what'd you expect, vastly outclasses typical JRPGs in terms of VA.

Yeah but you thinking its terrible doesn't mean its terrible for everyone, I have heard a lot worse dialogues than XV.
So have I, but again, standards are much higher this gen.

People spent half this thread saying previews aren't a sure way of how games turn out now all of a sudden it paints the full picture..I sure wonder why

Thank you for this. It was well thought out and worded. And I hope it helps jump start some more analytical discussion.

And I hope you enjoy the game when its out and you can analyze the game thoroughly. I genuinely look forward to your impressions, good, bad, or indifferent, :)

That other thread is so much drama...this is the first time I've really been active in the community shortly before a mainline FF release. Presumably this kind of rollercoaster ride and heavy emotional investment is standard with the series? But it feels like there's so much extra weight on this one due to the long development cycle and anticipation for a "return to form".

Having absorbed what I could from those snippets of the Edge preview, I'm more interested than ever in seeing how this game turns out. Certain (spoilery) things stand out as really, really interesting. I'm of the opinion that I will love it the same way I did my favourites VIII and XII, but want to stay mindful of criticism and it's been a useful reminder of how divisive FF games can be. I think this time I'll be on the side that likes it.

Edge has acknowledged that it was just a preview as well...so idk what to think anymore.

Doesn't this make perfect sense?

Fair warning, I haven't read the article, just enjoying the roller coaster on multiple sites, lol. But, it seems to me like they played a portion of the game. It sounds, to me, like they played up until the "take back your throne" part and not the whole "plague of stars/omen" thing it'll lead up to. Think like FFVI where
they have that fake ending before Kefka comes in and fucks up everyone's day.

I think it's very possible that the article is basically on the first two acts.

Oh no its happening again. We understand that your standards are higher than ours but please let us enjoy our primitive acting.

Man the other thread is getting crazy. I should bow out of that one.
I mean it's not even primitive, they're not using theater acting or any acting techniques that are out of the norm, (it's literally just ADR), they're just not doing it very well.

Your analysis is well-grounded, but the previewer confirmed on twitter that he reached the final boss and thus completed the story. I don't personally suspect if likely that he mistook an end-of-act-two style encounter for the real conclusion. But that's just me!

Hey I'm really sorry I shouldn't have said those things. I was having a bad day and I took it out on your comment. You didn't deserve that.

Again I'm really sorry.

Edge has always been very critical. I remember they were the only big media that hammered FFX hard. I respect their opinion, but alas, if they are looking for quality narratives (in their standard), they are looking at the wrong series, the wrong genre, and the wrong medium IMO.

JRPG VA has always been bad, bar one or two exceptions, so why do you bother with the genre? If you don't like it, fine. Many people dislike JRPGs for various reasons and it's totally cool, but you don't see them complaining in a JRPG thread, just like I'm not gonna come in a Gear thread and say "lol dudebro game".

I know you really want to push the boundary of videogame and get it recognized as a form of art (lol BAFTA), but some of us just want to have some fun. Mario can be saving Peach till the end of time and we don't mind it at all.

I'm still confused by the Square PR and Edge preview back-and-forth.
I guess I just didn't notice before but are Noctis' bros his Kingsglaive at that point? Outfits look kinda similar.
Looks that way. Ignis got opaque shades and Gladio got a topknot in the hyperbolic time chamber.

Maybe play it in its native tongue that it was designed for? Before you bring up The Witcher 3, it was still designed with Western mannerisms in mind but the Polish dub matches the characters better anyway IMO (I did't find the VAing of Geralt in ENG to be that great either). And before you bring up according to GAF, Japanese voice acting isn't natural or great either, it's what the Japanese audience likes according to the tons of seiyuu awards that exist and the fact that the VAing biz of Japan is probably the biggest one. Maybe consume the tons of Japanese voiced award winning performances and decide if it's good or bad for yourself? It's fine if foreign language just isn't your thing though. (some side note/tangent that I didn't feel like properly crafting a reason for: the Spanish sections in Breaking Bad were godawful despite the rest of the series' acting being so good)

TLOU and Souls games aren't even good comparisons to make. The style of those games' narrative are completely different. First, TLOU being a shorter/smaller game is a reason it can have such a good and tightly focused narrative. Second, the NPC's mouths don't even move when they speak in Souls games, and there's rarely even a conversation between 2 or more characters (or none?). There's also other reasons why they aren't good comparisons to make in terms of VAing quality but I won't go into them. Fact is, localizing Japanese games are just more difficult because of how they're written and structured and they obviously do not throw tons of money at the localization. That doesn't make the VAing in the ENG version objectively awful.
I'm still confused by the Square PR and Edge preview back-and-forth.
And what's the back-and-forth besides hyperbolic knee-jerk responses from GAF users? Like complaining about a stealth section as if stealth is a new revelation that was revealed with this preview. They've promoted the game with TWO stealth sections already before this! And then you people arguing since they didn't have the final build of the game, that none of their criticisms were valid. Even if there were missing story scenes it likely would not change the criticisms they made. They also said their impression of the game overall was generally positive. It's like did people even read the full preview?

How much of the game the previewer actually played, I guess. The previewer mentioned the second half of the game and the ending, but apparently doesn't have the full game. I may be reading into it but your response seems a little aggressive. I'm not really hyperbolic or knee-jerk in these threads and was just looking for some clarification, but okay.

I mean, unless those examples were specifically ones you said in that thread, I'm not really talking about you at all. I thought it was obvious I'm ranting about the users in that thread that turned it in to what was in the first few hundred responses.

Final Fantasy XV aiming for 60FPS/1080p on PS4 Pro

Just announced on the stream. Also has 4k (non-native)/30fps mode.

Edit: The 1080p mode will have an unlocked framerate it sounds as though it won't be near a constant 60 (at least at launch).

My impressions would be a bit biased...so I don't know if sharing them in long form is something I plan on doing.

We've already seen Iris with Noctis and with the party in trailers. In the section where you meet her, she even has her own HP bar.

Hum, I agree that we've seen her in some test footage during a cutscene or with Noctis in Lestallum, but I don't recall seeing her in battle, that's what I meant.

that puzzling face
I'm inclined to believe that since the footage was cut that the track played through to its conclusion before whoever was at the controls started playing again.

Also the audio at that point through to when Cindy shows up is either horribly recorded or encoded, so my shot in the dark hypothesis was that maybe the person recording the footage realized it was awful, or some other recording issue, attempted to fix it, then came back and started pushing the car.

(Audio was fixed in the rest of the video too, FWIW)

Maybe they just couldn't put the video up on YouTube without the uploader editing out Stand by Me... Would explain why all the characters and their lines would fade in and out the way it did.

I think my main issue with this game's visuals is the horrendous lip syncing during in-gameplay cutscenes (Like the chatting with Dino, for example). I know that the entire game cannot be mo-capped, but holy shit it looks bad.

I have zero issues with the normal cinematics, but the gameplay ones look waaaay off for this reason.

I noticed that as well with Dino when I watched the video last night. =/

When they uploaded the video yesterday, it had the song. They must have updated it to remove the song so that content ID wouldn't be triggered.

Totally, it's really bad. I wonder if the lips are synced to the japanese audio track, or if they're just talking puppets outside of the more important cutscenes.
