Digital Foundry: Battlefield 1 PS4 Pro vs PS4/PC Ultra Graphics Comparison/Analysis

Have not seen the DF analysis of BF 1 here yet. Here's the video of the BF1 comparison between Pro, PS4, PC

Everything you need to know about the Battlefield 1 PS4 Pro upgrade. Extra resolution! Improved effects! Faster performance! But how does it compare to the maxed out PC experience?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qu705pp0mv0

Quick notes:
- Uses checkerboard rending
- On 4K screens, uses dynamic resolution, ranging from 1440p - 1656p
- Increase in alpha effects
- Texture details locked at high on the Pro (medium - high on base ps4)
- terrain quality gets upgrade (locked at medium vs medium-low on base ps4)v
- undergrowth quality, shadow quality and AO unchanged from base PS4 version
- Performance improvements on the campaign (MP test in a future video)

Didn't catch everything in the video, definitely worth a watch.

Edit: Also, Eurogamer's article on frostbite and PS4 Pro provides more details:

It's a fascinating turn-out overall. There may well be very good reasons why DICE didn't pursue a 1080p/ultra equivalent for Pro (driving more graphical detail does have a certain degree of CPU overhead, after all) but the chosen strategy of balancing resolution increases with enhanced visual features and improved performance works well - and the end result is that all Pro owners get a really decent upgrade, regardless of the display type they might own.

hope they will include a all high graphic setting 1080p mode in the future. The game is suppose to get HDR patch too irc. Anyone know if the PC version have dolby atmos, was hoping this will be on consoles in the future.

That resolution bit - is that the final resolution or does it mean that is the native resolution before the checkerboard technique takes it up to 4k?

I'm not really a Battlefield guy, but it really did look very impressive on the Pro. I even turned the HUD off for a bit (and got wrecked) just because the eye candy was so nice.

Wow bigger upgrade than I expected tbh, I knew when I played it yesterday that it looked way sharper and cleaner than before. Well done dice marketing deal be damned.

Nothing! I said nothing!
Dynamic resolution like that would have prevented the issues seen with some other Pro games I think. Would have still given the resolution benefit most of the time as well.

PC does have atmos, but I can't enable it for some reason. I did read on here why but I forgot, I wouldn't use it any way.

As we get down to it... and with Scorpio coming too...

I've come to realise that if they can lock the frame rate that's perfect, but what I really want is more stuff on screen. Y'know?
More effects, more wind, more rain, more snow, puddles, reflections, more debris, more environment detail, additional trees and wildlife... stuff like that.

Hope it gets the HDR update soon.

I'm looking forward to when all future games have HDR and I don't have to play around with the settings every time I load up a HDR compatible game.

Anyway. Great job by DICE. These guys are amazing on a tech side.
Even on the base Ps4 the game looks amazing, and while frame rates might not be great, it's still running at more than 30fps while having more elements on screen, more players online and better visuals than most other games.

Good to see, let's hope more developers optimize properly for the pro. Looks as we will be able to see some Nice improvements if they do.

Some of the things you want only exist on high end PCs if at all.

Ha, welcome to life as a PC gamer. You won't get those things because games aren't being developed for the Pro, but rather the ps4 and Xbox.

Crosspost from other thread

- Single rendering mode that caters to both 4K and 1080p users via automatic upscale/downscale
- No HDR

- Higher rendering resolution
- Better framerate
- A bit better effects
- A bit better textures
- Faster asset streaming

- 4K TV users get much better image quality when compared to base PS4 [stretching 900p to 4K].
- 1080p TV users get very nice downsampled sharp image and more solid framerate [in campaign]

All sounds good.

Dice doing god's work!

Probably the most impressive game I played on Pro yesterday. MP has a vastly improved IQ and framerate. Nice to hear that effects and texture quality has improved too!

The stealth release of the patch + not sharing any information about potential future improvements is kinda whack tho. First party deals are not allowing them to talk about it.

Was dark10x left out in the cold when it came to PS4 Pro ?

Because 1st he said that he think Rise of The Tomb Raider was 1800P than he said that Battlefield 1 wasn't updated for Pro yet

Yes.

BF1 isn't updated for Pro yet. They simply set the console output at 4K and captured BF1 running in 'base' mode. The Pro upscales everything to the selected output (including non-Pro games).

They only uploaded two 4K videos - BF1, which isn't even in Pro mode, and Mordor, which they label as being 60fps when it's not.

Doesn't this game have dynamic resolution? maybe it doesn't need a patch because they made the game so that when it's played on better hardware you get better resolution,

Unfortunately, that does not happen on the Pro. There is absolutely zero improvement - the system runs like a standard PS4 when running non-Pro games. :(

I was just thinking that maybe they didn't need a patch because they made the game to run on PS4 Pro day one.

I'd like a pure performance, native 1080P mode that avoids dynamic res changes. Improvement is significant, tho I still find the framerate to be distracting when riding horses etc.

TLDW: Runs worse than PC, but that's Sony and they're paying our Mortgages.

Is it suppose to run as good or better than a high end PC?

It looks absolutely fantastic on the Pro. The frame-rate and resolution gets a huge boost with better graphical features, what else do you want?

Pretty impressed so far, the resolution is very clearly much higher and the frame rate is super solid, plus there seems to be more smoke effects. Haven't really noticed the geometry etc but maybe with a side by side it's noticeable.

I still don't know why they compare this to the PC, nobody wants to know if the PC with a 1080/TitanX is better. Why don't they just compare the Pro with the PS4 and XB1S to see the improvements from there.

DF also makes lots of assumptions in their videos, that I'd like to see pointed out. They say textures are better on PC, but I don't see it, could they show the differences. They say alpha effects are improved on Pro, but it still does not match PC, well let me see that too, because in their video none of these things are visible. So if the only purpose of putting PC in there is to show that it's superior to PS4.PRo, I can say now that it means little to an effective comparison. If you're not going to do a proper PC vs PS4.Pro comparison, why don't you show us the differences in graphical settings between the Pro vs the base PS4 and the XB1. They're all consoles at it is.

Just out of interest, what did you watch it on and what quality did you choose on YouTube?

Even 4k YouTube videos don't look great but I could see the difference on a 4k monitor, it's still hard to show sometimes because of the compression. On top of that the image of the Pro was much softer as well

Was really hoping for improved water reflections on the pro as well as an increase in undergrowth and clutter density. A shame the former wasn't added but I suppose the latter not being added make sense as it'd be harder to spot people in multiplayer for Pro players.

1080p YouTube, I don't use chrome so if 4k options are available there, it's not available to me in EDGE.....Uhhhh...I'm not sure I would want to support DF on the patreon as yet though...especially with how they have it set-up.

In any case, I could see that Pro is blurrier than PC at 4k native, but I'm not judging differences in rendering resolution, I'm judging texture resolution and the resolution of other effects like alpha/explosions etc....and of course other graphical settings they say are better on PC. I'd like to see visual cues and zooms showing those differences....

Lets be honest. DF can always see that the textures between XB1 and PS4 are the same despite a 720p to sometimes 1080p rez divide....

To see where it fits in term of scalability and settings.

And that's fine, but show me the differences in textures, alpha effects, lod etc... that you speak of , don't just say it. DF just saying things mean little to me in an objective and visual prone piece.

Edit: Speaking of which, I still don't get how this game could be doing checkerboarding and then rendering at 1440p at times, the artefacting would be insane. They've pegged the highest resolution at 1656p, but shouldn't that be 1620p...I'd like a deeper analysis on this tbh...Dice has been very quiet on this. I think they should give us some info on what they're doing here on the Pro.

In a previous video, DigitalFoundry said that Battlefield 1 lacks some details on PS4 like SSR on weapons. Was that added in the PS4 PRO version? Is there a locked 1080p mode with maxed out details like Mass Effect Andromeda?
