#supportedbyEA - EA sets new rules for Youtubers and Streamers etc.

Found this on the german EA news blog and several german media outlets and havent seen a thread here yet.

source in german

A quick rundown of the points:
  • EA requires now by contract the disclosure of sponsored content
  • There Are two categories: #supportedbyEA and #advertisement
  • #supportedbyEA where EA has sponsored the access to the game (travel, press-event, review copy etc) but no influence on the content of the creator
  • #advertisement is straigt up advertisement for a game, with direct influence or material provided by EA
  • content creators are required to use the hashtags #supportedbyEA or #advertisement to mark written content (Twitter, Facebook etc.)
  • Video content has to use either the following watermarks or a clear audio message in the beginning of the video that the content is supported by EA or an advertisement

While not being a big fan of EA i like their approach here to make it clear to customers what is sponsored and what is not. Will make stories like the Pewdiepie Shadow of Mordor story less likely and i hope more publishers/devs implement similar rules.

Withdraw support if old

Would they even support someone who is gonna trash their game though? Of course a Youtuber or Streamer is gonna say nice things about a game if they're getting all of that. They'd want it to happen again.

I'm glad that EA is (seemingly) doing this proactively.

Advertising regulators are sort of forcing EA's hand on this. They're not doing it to be nice. They're doing it because it is going to land them in court if they keep things the way they were.

thats true. we might have a situation like with Jim Sterling here, who got blacklisted by them for being too risky.

Also aditional note: I dont know if its only EA germany or international, since i found this press release only on the german site so far.

They do already have the Ronku program and notes on current videos.

I like the transparency. I came into this thread expecting something like Nintendo's terrible approach to YouTube.

I came in expecting to make a witty side comment about EA but honestly I actually agree and like this so good job EA.

And this is stuff GamerGate could have been pushing for instead of mostly just harassing women on Twitter.

Good stuff by EA, that's probably the most clear I've seen *any* product placement/sponsored content rules. If there was some blowup story about these, you'd figure it would have happened by now. Seems more like they're trying to head one off from developing.

Not necessarily. LazyGameReviews has been really critical of The Sims 4 but they keep giving him review copies for the DLC.

Twitch already requires the title of the stream to have #sponsored in it. So all this does is add an annoying watermark. Wouldn't the same be a much better way of doing it on youtube as well?

Sounds good on the surface. But this is EA. What are we missing?
Given the amount of YouTubers EA drags to events, they probably think it's better to have the videos saying Supported By EA than everything appearing paid due to lack of differentiation.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.

X-factor, LevelCap, and a few others have been pretty critical of Battlefield and things that needed to be fixed on launch (and past that) in the past. They continue to be (stupidly) listened to. So... I mean... your tinfoil isn't very effective?

titles arent that easily seen on mobile devices, so it might get missed. a watermark might be a small annoyance but it leaves no doubts

Also seems like a good way to avoid bad press, if a You Tuber or a Streamer failed again to do a proper disclosure, because You Tuber also violated the contract with EA.

I mean yeah, but on the other end of the spectrum you need to consider that they have to disclose that now so if you believe them or think they are shills is up to you.

Glad to see this move.

Hope more companies follows this. Should be standard for all for 2017 and forward!

Nice move by EA, hopefully other publishers follow suit.

The more audiences know whose opinions have been bought and paid for, the better.

I suppose so. Never remember that some people watch streams on mobile. Seems so strange to me.
Also just noticed that it only has to show at the beginning of the video not during the whole thing. I don't mind that. Does the source say anything about when during a stream that watermark has to appear?

Gotta stay one step ahead of the FTC, and show good faith and transparency.

I deal with this stuff all the time, good that they are being VERY clear about this.

EA continues to slay 🙏

You don't have to say you don't work for/with ea. You only have to put a disclaimer if you do.
