Sega of Japan wants to know which game you wish to see revived

not surprised about the result, Sakura Taisen was a biiiiiiig thing back in the days here in Japan

nice to see Shenmue got a lot of attention, even if I wonder it those votes came most from people outside Japan

also JSR at 2nd place really is surprising considering JSRF was released only on OG Xbox which did worst than any SEGA home system

Segata Sanshiro doesn't surprise me, a really true SEGA hero deserves the top spot and also shows how much love had Saturn (it got more votes than Miku...)

Hey yo, where's Eternal Champi-

Holy shit, I thought this was 3rd Party. Double checking Wikipedia, it was made "for" SEGA, which is very unclear. Apparently, Mr. Bones is either owned by SEGA, some dead company, or Rockstar. If the former, then SEGA needs to re-evaluate what they're doing and make another Mr. Bones.

EDIT: I feel kinda bad I couldn't work in JSR, but weren't Beat & Gum in that rumored mobile game? Meanwhile, I don't think Eternal Champions is coming back without a push, and I really, really want Streets of Rage back after playing Remake. And of course, I couldn't lie and say Bayonetta wasn't my favorite SEGA character.

I'm pretty sure Sega owns this. CG was done by Angel Studios (now a Rockstar studio -- I believe it's the one that did RDR) and coded by Zono, which is now defunct.

Sad Mr Bones wasn't in Sonic All-Star Racing.

Results from the stream:

That's a nice list. It makes me sad. Oh well, Yakuza 0 isn't far off. That'll give me a nice shot of Sega goodness.

Nice showing from Panzer Dragoon. It was never going to sit at the top of the pile; but it's I'd happily settle for a port of Orta (so good). That game would be majestic with full HD visuals.

Also, JSR being high is good to see. Go on Sega, scrape whatever Smilebit devs are still hanging around a get a third made.

Why am I not surprised that the anime waifu mecha RPG blew everything else out of the water.

I'm surprised that it's stomping the modern anime waifu RPG darling (Persona) considering its rapid increase in popularity the past few years. Perhaps it's the added nostalgia that Sakura Taisen (Wars) has...

Yeah at one time it was insanely huge and one of the biggest franchises of its time. For example when I was here in Japan the first time 15 years ago, the series was starting to slowly fade but even then there were tons of anime for it, live theater/concert shows and performances by the voice actors in costume (I went to one and it was fantastic), a nice big store for sakura taisen in ikebuko that I went to many times (sadly long gone), and tons of games. But alas the series had run its course by the time sakura taisen v came out. Plus the changes to characters in that game probably didn't help.

But it was insanely huge for a time and it really deserves a comeback. There was a ds game a few years ago but no one seemed to buy it. Other than that there have been the occasional pachislot games. But if they brought it back I think I would be even more happier for that than I was for shenmues return. Heck I'm still bummed we never got that prequel sakura taisen game "kouma" which was announced way back in 2002 at a big sakura taisen announcement event. That game sounded so awesome. Shame as we got pretty much everything else announced at the event that that one was announced, and they announced like 10 or so game, anime, and stage show things at that event. Yet we never heard another word about that game after that day.

Great to see it won the poll. I do hope the series comes back. I just hope they can replicate the style of the first games the most if they ever do bring it back. Those first two games, and 3 as well, are incredable classics!

Part of it is that the characters in each of the teams (generally) have really good chemistry and play off each other well that it makes the games a joy to play through.

Franchise was huge back then and the glory moments were between the musicals (Benitokage etc), Kouhei Tanaka's music mastery and Hiroi Ouji's mind of crazy love. These days I've really warmed up to ST4 considering the background (Sega going third party, money and talent drying up quickly).

Because of that, I think any new team would be difficult to transition to after the Ouji/Fujishima/Matsubara/Tanaka combination so I'm not that hopeful for a revival.

My only regret was not jumping on the STxGBF train early :/

I think what makes Sakura Taisen successful iis its bizarre theme. Sega and Red managed to incorporate Taisho era + Takarazuka Revue + Mecha + Dating Sim + Episodic structure like anime into this truly unique series, so unique that there is nothing similar to it. As you have mentioned, the games' quality is also very high that some of them are classics in the SRPG genre. IMO, Sakura Taisen 3 is one of the best games created by Japanese, so I hope that Sega revives the series or re-makes the first four games so that relatively young gamers can appreciate it.

The 'steampunk' setting that ST has is one of the best out there, and the writing there is in a way that is actually terribly cheesy and occasionally falls into the same mud as other similar games where it's one guy surrounded by girls, but the team chemistry and team melodies won me over.

As an aside, I really enjoyed Gravity Rush settings and themes and can't wait for its sequel, but some of the setting did overlap and I can't help but hear a lot of Sakura Taisen in Kouhei Tanaka's score. Pleasure Quarter sounds like something that'd come out of ST3 - Chattes Noire

Most hoped revival:
1. Sakura Wars (2457)
2. Jet Set Radio (1485)
3. Virtual On (729)
4. Shenmue (727)
5. Virtua Fighter (581)
6. Panzer Dragoon (538)
7. Shining Force (518)
8. Skies of Arcadia (483)
9. Streets of Rage (437)
10. NiGHTS into dreams... (261)

Sigh, another year gone by without Ecco the Dolphin getting his true deserved recognition.

That being said, this is a strong list. I'm not sure SEGA realizes how much potential there is by investing into making a proper Streets of Rage or Skies of Arcadia revival. Heck, Shenmue III was one of the most requested things for years, but it took Sony taking the lead, and fans funding it themselves before it would happen.

The characters chemistry was a huge part of what made that series so great for sure. The way that gets built up through each games is brilliant. Especially in Sakura Taisen 3 with the way the Pari Kagekidan gets shown what teamwork means in that second disk especially. It really is a joy to play through. Not to mention also the great way that it presents in its own way the world of the takarazuka. Without Sakura Taisen I wouldnt have ever really taken a notice of that real life theater at all.

Plus it has that wonderful 90s anime feel which is just perfect. It and and Geppy X are the two best titles that replicate the feel of playing an anime perfectly. Character design that doesn't just completely go full moe thankfully, and some of the best music you will ever find in gaming history.

Those glory days were amazing. Seeing one of the musicals live, the Sumire retirement one, was one of the highlights of my first year in Japan. An amazing show, only slightly harmed by the fact that Maya Okamoto wasn't there so the full teikokukagekidan was missing sadly, but such amazing fun and so full of great memories for me. And lots of crazy stories as well.

But I think you're right, if they were to bring it back, you would need to original team. Without it it wouldn't feel right. That production team was so perfect, and they created a masterpiece. 1-4 is all great. And yeah I also enjoy 4. Its just too bad that the dreamcast's quick death, plus most likely the retirement of Sumire's voice actor, most likely hastened the grand finale. It would've been so great to have gotten a grand finale on the level of 1-3.

Yes agreed. It took a little bit of everything and made something completely special. wrapped all together with that 90s anime goodness and you had perfection. Remakes of 1-4 would be awesome but I wonder if Sega would ever do it. They already remade Sakura Taisen 1 and I think 3 for Playstation 2 and Im not sure how big those were. Not to mention the psp version of 1 and 2. Still if its possible, I would certainly ask for them so that newer gamers can check them out. Not to mention the fact western gamers still have not gotten to play them at all in english.

That also reminds me, my one gaming regret is I have never played Sakura Taisen V. At the time I didn't have the funds to get it at its original release and I always keep putting off getting it used whenever i see it, and its super cheap too always. Maybe Its cause the character designs bug me or something. Either way I need to fix that and finally play it.

Surprised OutRun isn't there.

Especially after Turbo Outrun apparently won that poll for wanted 3D Classics not too long ago. It would be my personal candidate for a revival for sure, even more after seeing that Daytona is coming back already.

Glad to see Skies of Arcadia, Panzer Dragoon and Jet Set Radio in the top 10 at least. (I had to look up no 1 though - which doesn't interest me at all, as is usual for many more modern Japanese games.)

Edit: Don't know how to feel about Shenmue being on the list at all though. More people need to know about 3 over there at the very least, but Sega also needs to simply adopt 3 as an official release and publish it if they really want to take these requests seriously. As it stands, it's a wasted slot here. Any idea what series would have made 10 if we discount Shenmue?

Are there fan translations of these Sakura Wars games?

As far as I know, none have come out in English although it seems one was being worked on for the first game a few years ago. Who knows what happened to that. Of course the fifth game in the series was released in the west in English, sadly 1-4 which most people find to be the best of the bunch, are not available in English. Although there were many attempts to bring them to the west Ive read about. Particularly the PSP remake of Sakura Taisen 1 and 2 that got denied by Sony's US branch from what I remember reading.

However there have been translation guides online that help out a bit. When I played Sakura Taisen 1 and 2 for the first time way back in 2000, I used one from online that helped me with all the major parts of the story as my Japanese wasn't as good then as it is now.

I still haven't played Sakura Taisen PS2 remake and Sakura Taisen V. About the former, I heard it is a great remake. Although I have the copy which I bought from Book Off last year, my PS2 broke down so I haven't had the chance to play it yet. In respect of V, I understand many people don't like the character design (initially, me neither), but somehow it grew on me after watching the opening movies repeatedly. I will certainly grab a copy and a second-hand PS2 when visiting Japan next time in order to play them.

In respect of the series' future, I welcome both remake or new games. If Sega think that they want to start it over, I will happily play whatever they make provided that it is not a mobile game.

Yep, my favorite opening movie. So well-done. I also mention it in the OP of this thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1278912

I also have a copy of the remake as well. But I haven't gotten to it myself either. Ive heard good things too and am hoping to finally get to it sometime in the next year. I certainly also want to give V a chance. thankfully it and its "episode 0" side game are so cheap at book off that I can get it for basically the price of a drink these days.

Yeah, I was surprised how cheap those games were in Book Off. I got my remake copy for 100 yen.

Yes, thank you, y'all Sakura Taisen fans.

Time to dash out some unrealistic hopes & dreams here.

what I expect:
lol nothing

what I have some bare minimum hopes for:
Port/remaster of mainline ST series to current gen
Localisation of above games

Hopes & dreams lol:
Localisation of ST1/2/3/4
Remaster/port of ST1 (PS2)/3/4/5 to current-gen
Remake of ST2 in the same level of ~Atsuki Chishio ni~ (ST1 PS2)

Hopes & dreams hahahaha:
Localisation of ST1/2/3/4
Grounds-up remake of the original quadrilogy (ST1-4)
Enhancement of presentation & gameplay closer in-line to VC1 which was an evolution of ST's gameplay framework in the first place (e.g. 1:1 recreation of the entire theatre, you can actually walk from place-to-place as Ohgami, etc)
Improvements to story and character arcs borrowing from superior elements that has been expanded in the manga/anime/OVAs.

Hopes & dreams AHAHAHAHAHA :
All of the above + V as well.
A wholly new chapter in the Sakura Taisen universe with significant investment in pretty much everything. A next-gen Sakura Taisen with new, fresh cast of characters who could carve their own mark for a new future in the franchise, improved gameplay that evolves the mechanics of the VC-franchise, and the VN style storytelling and character moments improved to be more dynamic.

...
...
...
...

I feel a lot better and also a bit sad after typing all that.

Ironically Sakura Wars TV and movie were popular in the West and dubbed.

Were SEGA to make a new Sakura Wars game, it would take place in Berlin, with Ratchet training the new recruits. One in a million chance...
At least this was the plot development of the last New York OVA.

SWV features the best battle system, but I didnt like the characters, except Subaru and maybe Gemini. Stopped playing the last chapter. Things began to fall apart.

Gemini & Ratchet were the only characters I adored from STV.

Story and the rest of the cast I was "ehh..."
ST never really does great stories anyway, so the games are carried by the characters.

New York ensemble was definitely weaker by a fair margin compared to Paris & Japan's.

Localize it and I'll bite.

(This will never happen.)

Considering the kind of games that are being localised with greater frequency these days (visual novels, etc) even on platforms like consoles, and the fact that Sakura Wars V was localised by NIS America back in the day...

I think the chances of current-gen releases of Sakura Wars getting localised are far, far more optimistic than a few years ago, if SEGA hasn't changed any localisation policy. Even more so with the rising popularity and wider acceptance of "visual novel" style games.

There's also more niche publishers/localisation team these days like PQube and Aksys that I could see going for those titles.

Yeah the anime was popular in the west. The movies popularity was well deserved (saw that opening day in Tokyo) as it was probably one of the best entries in the whole anime sakura taisen world. The TV series on the other hand, sigh what a missed opportunity and such a disappointment for me. Came no where close to the goodness of the first game. Except for the episode talking about the kouma wars. That was its one great episode. Still makes me sad thats all we got of that and not that kouma game they announced

I think you're right. It certainly has a better chance of getting localized these days than it did when someone tried to localize the psp remakes. With all the games that get localized these days in those genres you said, not localizing Sakura Taisen now would be a huge mistake. And if done well a remaster/remake of the original 4 could be spectacular!

Sakura as the protagonist with Ohgami as a supporting character was pretty nice of an idea, but yeah... there were quite a bit of misses there.

Not to mention the numerous changes to the story that just didn't work at all I felt. Literally its almost tied with the Nadesico Movie for being my most disapointing anime Ive ever watched. With the exception of that one good episode. Thankfully the movie was a million times better. And boy was that fun seeing on opening day in Japan. So many people in line that day.

Wondering whether they'll discount the results of the Survey due to American JSR fan-sites using it as a way to get a JSRF HD.

Series fares better if you havent played the games. I consider the series and the OVAs as a nice addendum. Not many games adaptations get Madhouse and Production IG. I liked that they made the kubo of one of the characters communicate to her. Ending is also different than the game. The first OVA was nice as well. Hand drawn animated kubos look much better than the CGI ones.

There's something endearing about Sakura Taisen and Segata Sanshiro winning in their respective categories to lead the polls together - that ad was as endearing as it feels prophetic now.

I hope Sega can afford to get Hiroshi Fujioka onboard to do more things as Sega Jesus.

Yeah it would fare a bit better, which would help explain its popularity in the US. But yeah if like me you've played the first game first and then watched the series, you will be very disappointed. I can't imagine what peoples reaction would be seeing the series first than playing the game. Now that would be interesting. Also gotta agree, hand drawn animation does look better than the early computer aided drawn stuff we saw back then, especially sakura taisen. Although thankfully the movie was done so well.

Not a sign of Eternal Champions? I know this is Japan-centric, but a couple of those last placers only got 200 votes. EC should've had some presence.

Sad Mr Bones wasn't in Sonic All-Star Racing.

Now I really regret voting for Bayonetta; she would've done well regardless, whereas I might've been the one to remind SEGA that they own this.

I doubt they'd add Mr. Bones, but I'd love to see him if they do a 3rd. Even if he's just a cameo in a HotD stage, it's enough. Besides, Ristar's cameo got him promoted to flagbearer when NiGHTS themselves got promoted from flagbearer to car! Plus, Smash pulled off Bayonetta in a family-friendly setting; that held Bayo back last time, but maybe she'll have a 2nd chance this time?

... Man, now I just want another SEGA Racing game. I hope one's in development; the last one was a top-tier Wii U launch for me.

So it's time for Segata Sanshiro character action game made by Platinum right?

Glad to see Skies, Street of Rage, Panzer Dragoon and Nights getting mentions. We can ony hope to see one of those franchises on 2020

If they released new installments of the top 10 on today's consoles (and Nintendo Switch)... it would be safe to say that Sega was back.

There was no Space Channel 5 option on that poll what the fuck

At least Ulala made the character list.

I hope this actually brings some results
