Yeah, Resident Evil 7 is a really weird case. For such a high profile release (as in: major Capcom franchise), Capcom has been super low key with it.

Well, at least the remasters have been selling surprisingly well, so there's definitely interest in the franchise.

Will pretty interest to see how RE7 performs, not just in Japan but also worldwide.

Super looking forward to this! I wonder if Snack World will be a global release franchise this time for Level-5.

They did announce the IP globally when it was announced (even with English pilot), but haven't said anything about that since then, so... yeah.

One thing's for sure, western release most definitely won't be on 3DS, because good luck launching a new IP on 3DS in 2018. Especially in the west. Well, at least they have the mobile game, but mobile and Level-5... not the best of mixes, ha ha. (That reminds me, why the hell isn't Wibble Wobble available outside the US yet? Or did I miss a stealth release?).

So in the west, games as a service (among other things) have led to people spending much more time on one or two games they particularly like. Is there a trend like this happening on console/handheld in Japan? I wouldn't think so since the sort of multiplayer games that led to this are less popular in Japan, but I'm curious as to whether something like that is occurring.

Atlus Ceo

Here’s what the Atlus head honcho had to say about the current state of the Japanese console market:

The market is narrowing thanks to the prevalence of mobile phone games, and the shrinking of the ‘otaku’ culture in Japan, but our target audience is not only Japan. After our success in North America, I believe the next step is to move on to Europe; there are many consumers who hold a strong interest in Japanese culture, such as France. We are striving to serve everyone as best we can.

Despite this general downswing in the Japanese marketplace, Atlus sales haven’t sagged. “The sales ratio of Atlus titles is approximately the same,” said Hiraoka. “Which is a very rare case in Japanese-based publishing.” This definitely showcases one of the advantages to servicing a specific niche audience rather than a broad one. While the casual gamer is no longer buying consoles in Japan, Atlus’ audience is still there.
While the game has been big in Japan, Hiraoka expects big things from North America as well:

Obviously we have very high expectations for it in the West, and feel that it will become a representative title of Atlus, not only in Japan but in the West as well. Each and every staff member is working extremely hard to ensure it sets the gold standard for our localisations and culturalisations.

Gamers forgive very easily. One or two concurrent NA/EU releases and Euro-GAF will be singing Atlus' praises.

I'm sure they will, while the Atlus' problems with Europe are still no where in sight to being solved. When exactly is the release date for Persona 5 for Europe.

You're saying this like the Deep Silver situation didn't happen. Persona 5's release date is the same as the North American one.

To get us back on topic and discussing sales or sales prospects, and since the rumor thread itself is probably not the place to discuss it (and it seems fairly confirmed at this point from various insiders), what would we say are the prospects of an actual MvC4? Will the Marvel label be able to get over the slump that fighters have found themselves in (or, in particular, the pit that Capcom's fighter finds its self in)? (The title in and of itself probably doesn't matter for Japan, but it is another Capcom project.)

I'm actually dubious of it even being a 60$-at-launch game, and expecting more of a KI roll-out or something akin to the mobile game in terms of delivery. But that may not be the case.

We may see another 60$ fighter from Capcom within... two-ish years, still exclusive. We do know that Marvel has apparently shown a desire to really jump back into the core market for video games, so this project is likely "free" for Capcom in that its paid entirely by Marvel/Sony.

MvC4 wouldn't be launching into a void either, on the video game side of things, DC has done a lot better than Marvel with Injustice being a fairly popular brand (though it rides on the coattails of Mortal Kombat).

Just a friendly reminder that the Deep Silver situation is more than just Persona 5. Like SMTIVA that is not released yet here...

To be fair, when the deal with Deep Silver happened, SMTIVA was already close to release in the US. That they'd need a bit of time to warm up, should be expected. The question is whether release dates will be closer starting with Persona 5 or if Persona will continue to be an outlier (people tend to forget that Persona Q also released at the same time in the US and Europe).

One thing that worries me a lot, is how Square Enix is handling FFXV adverts. It's kinda weird because, as far as I'm concerned, pre-orders of these last days haven't been bad at all what drives me to think about how only truly fans of the franchise were headed to make reservations. Stands inside of big electronic stores show FFXV in a big way.

But outside, as Square usually does (for example in the Dragon Quest case), is not moving anything. There are a couple, and not more than a couple, of big ads (Akiba and not too many places more) as this one, but it kinda worries me how low expections for FFXV from Square Enix could be.

YSO's predictions for Final Fantasy XV range from 450k to 850k, with most closer to the former rather than the later.

All but a couple expect PS4 sales to be below 100k.
