Stardew Valley cancel its Wii U version for a Nintendo Switch release

Props to Sendou in the Nintendo Switch Discussion Thread for noticing this :

Stardew Valley will not be coming to the Wii U, however. Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch. I am really looking forward to the Switch, and I believe that the Switch’s unique capabilities could create some exciting opportunities for Stardew Valley. I do want to emphasize that I am absolutely committed to seeing Stardew Valley on Nintendo platforms, and I really do appreciate your support and understanding in this.

Good news.

I'm sorry we won't be getting it sooner, but more support for the Switch is a good thing and it'll likely find a larger audience there than on Wii U.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
That wasnt a difficult choice at all

At this point, if I was a dev I would do the same.
You have more to gain skipping WiiU and deving for Switch, than deving for WiiU. Especially if you're a smaller team.
Since I would say the majority of players who want it on WiiU and have been waiting, are going to be inevitably getting a switch as well.
If they aren't, the game can run on just about any normal PC these days.

Perfect fit for it.

I've been playing it portably on the GPD WIN and enjoying it immensely in that form.

It was also a perfect fit on Wii U...

All these games with lots of menus and inventory stuff are which is a thing that'll be lost on Switch. So I'm both bummed and excited.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
we made the difficult choice to shift

Come on - you know this wasnt a difficult choice :)

Been waiting for the Switch release - will get on Day 1.

Why not both? I am sure that it's not really hard porting game like SV to Wii U.

Limited resources + the people who would get the game on WiiU in 2017 are likely the ones who will own a Switch near launch anyway.

Especially if you plan to update the game for months after the initial release having to keep maintaining a extra version can be a toll on smaller dev teams. Makes sense to focus their efforts on a solid Switch release.

At first this annoyed me, but it didn't even take 30 seconds to think of three extra months of polish, plus on the go gaming.

Keep doing what you do, Chucklefish.

The right choice. Although both would have been better, anyone moving over to Switch can't be faulted for changing platforms

This is awesome, and I hope more indies decide to release on Switch. I'd love to play Inside, Gungeon, This War of Mine, etc. on the Switch. Too bad for Wii U owners though.

Good move in my opinion (as a Wii U owner). It just makes a lot more sense for him to devote resources to the Switch now.

Isn't this a one-man team? There's only so much time in the day...

While it's probably not the hardest thing to do, why would you want to jump through certification an extra time for a console that's been on its deathbed for the last year.

Add this to the list right behind Bloodstained and Yooka-Laylee. I'm sure others will follow. Would not be surprised at Shovel Knight Switch either.

Should be accepted that any game currently announced but does not have a release date for it to be released in 2016 or at the very latest January or February 2017 likely isn't coming out on the Wii U. Assume it's canceled or being moved to the Switch regardless of any official statement or not. This should have been the outlook people should have been using for much of 2016 anyway when it comes to the Wii U.

This would work PERFECTLY.

Harvest Moon style titles live on Nintendo handheld and this game was begging to be on one with how it's gameplay works. Maybe I'll actually be able to get into it now.

Keep 'em coming, I say.

At this point, the only one crazy enough to still release a game on Wii U now that the Switch is revealed is Nintendo.

Because they kinda have to.

Wouldn't even be surprised in seeing more and more developers go this route...

I don't know about "more and more", there can't be that many high profiled games left with Wii U versions, surely?

I still think Yooka Laylee is still a lock for Wii U, though I would be very surprised if it didn't also get a switch version.

Bloodstained I could certainly imagine having the Wii U version scrapped for a Switch game

Let's be honest here, it wasn't that difficult a choice.

Not really a difficult decision from where I'm standing, but I don't pretend to be in any of their shoes either. Put all your effort into a port on a system on its last legs, or have something ready for its successor early in its life and full of potential with less competition to deal with on the same platform.

Makes sense for a game like this. A portable console is the perfect fit for a farming/life sim game like this.

Looking forward to this on the Switch.

I wonder if any games will stick to WiiU over Switch. Yooka Laylee seemed pretty deep into WiiU development.
