Last week's biggest debut, Final Fantasy XV, saw a significant drop in sales this week, as is commonplace for the series. However, the 75 per cent drop suffered is less than the 80 per cent drop seen by 2010's Final Fantasy XIII in its second week

Square Enix's Final Fantasy XV has got off to a strong start at UK games retail.

Digital data isn't included, but in terms of boxes, it is the second-fastest selling game in the series' history - beaten only by 2010's Final Fantasy XIII. If you combine the early performance of this with the new Skyrim remake (which has been one of this Christmas' more successful launches) and it's been a strong quarter for the RPG genre.

Skyrim actually saw its sales rise last week by 34 percent, driven by Cyber Monday discounting.

Square Enix's challenge will be to maintain Final Fantasy XV's early performance. The game has an avid hardcore fanbase, and typically titles of this type tend to do well in their debut week, but fall away quickly after that. As a means of comparison, unit sales of Final Fantasy XIII fell by 80 percent in its second week back in March 2010.

I'd say that's impressive given the date and competition it was released in. With the rest of December and the constant posters and advertising I've seen around on billboards and such I'd say this will be quite the hit and do well for the Christmas season.

The question is if it will have legs after.

How much did Final Fantasy games up to X sell in Europe/UK?

Remember, we didn't get FF games over here really until FF7, so there wasn't really a lot of nostalgia/love for the series until the Playstation generation grew up outside of the RPG hardcore.

7 of my GOATs in one chart

As for XV, it's a good game. Not amazing, but very solid and I'm enjoying. Am 6 hours in.

I wonder if digital would make up the difference here. If a third of sales were digital it would slip past.

A fair bit lower than the 30% that's always quoted for the US i would think

Yep you would think. Retail XV could be had for £37, PSN is £49.99. £12 premium for not being arsed to walk to a shop and not have a physical copy...

And I like digital, I've bought a tonne in the PSN sales this year.

Did Croc have a bigger push in the UK? I suppose that would make sense, since Argonaut was from the region.

Croc launched in October, Mario 64 launched in March. So I wouldn't expect the latter to be topping the charts back then at that point in time. The Mario 64 sales from that period are probably more representative of N64 hardware sales at that time.

The 30% was worldwide, so if anything, the US probably is higher while UK would be dropping the average due to pricing I would guess.

The real headline should be "Final Fantasy XV selling worse than Final Fantasy XIII in UK" to be honest, considering the history and hype.

People were hyped for XIII before they played it, and don't forget the major western reviews were very kind to it. It looked really good based on screenshots and trailers

Since FFXIII was not sold digitally iirc, the difference between both games might be smaller than the numbers here suggest.

Sorry to be off-topic:
14 (15) ROAD RASH (EA & OCEAN)
Whoa, funny to see those names side by side I thought they were rivals. For those that don't remember Ocean is like an 80s British version of 2000s EA (successful publisher and developer, gets all the licenses).

As for what happened to Ocean? They got bought by Infograms and renamed in 1998.

Croc apparently started life as a Yoshi 3D Platformer (Argonauts idea) so a Nintendowngoal?

Now was Week 46, 1997 when PS, N64 and Saturn were all £99? I know it happened before the end of 1997 (the N64 had no games bundled*, can't remember about Playstation and Saturn you could get Christmas Nights) but yeah Mario 64 had been replaced by Goldeneye as the killer app.

*-It was about a year later you had a Goldeneye bundle and a Mario 64 bundle.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Sincerly, I was expecting a bigger drop for FFXV's first week. Far from a bad debut.

I think it might be quite shocking how low digital sales are for new retail releases in the UK. As you say £12 difference (often more). You do not need to walk to a shop, just order online. Also trade-in is still a big factor in retail sales.

that seems really good. people forget that ffxiii had a lot of hype and FF as a whole was a bigger deal (before se decided to make 2 sequels to a game most people disliked..).

Put digital there too and i thought it would have done much worse myself. Hopefully the game is good (i like it so far) and it can have some legs.

With digital being apparently so prevalent, we're looking at 140-175k. Thats a good start.
Yeah, even in UK digital is most likely above 20% of sales, so you can easily chuck 25-35K copies on top of the quoted figures. That's not too bad actually all things considered. We shall see what happens next few weeks.

Well those that favor JRPGs of course would flock towards PS4 more.

Yeah, that much was obvious, though it's shown how different the market is today. It was a more even split last gen:

At UK launch, FFXIII-2 saw 54% of copies sold on PS3 and 46% on Xbox 360.

The exact same split held true occurred for Final Fantasy XIII in 2010 too.

UK sales tend to drop off massively once you get past the top 3 or so entries, so I wonder what proportion of FFXV sales were on Xbox One: 10%? 20% tops?

21% from the looks of things. Paints a bright future for Japanese Xbox support.

Also the appalling internet speeds the country has compared to the US and most of the rest of Europe

Well deserved if the Judgment Disc demo is anything to go by.

Just got this game with a Pro, so I guess I'll know for sure in a couple of days.

79% on PS4 apparently
If anything I'm surprised that it's selling that much on Xbox One.
