Imma be honest, I'm surprised people even use the web browser that comes with a console. I didn't touch it once on my Wii U or PS4. I got a phone with a killer browser near me at all times

The Wii U browser is amazing. The touchscreen and video player make it worthwhile.

There's no way there won't be a Netflix app. Nintendo would have to explicitly block Netflix from publishing it on the eShop.

I can imagine Nintendo giving up on apps. Everyone's got a smartphone and tablet where the options are just, frankly, better. The app support on Wii U and 3DS was awful, I can see them just not bothering. Not for the exact same reason as them never supporting DVDs and Blu-Rays (licensing costs) but for a similar thought process
It still feels surreal to see Dark Souls 3 among the list of games. Hope it becomes truee! I've always wanted to play a DS but I don't have a proper PC or console to play it. Plus you can play it on the go uffffff.

For watching netflix on a tv the wii u is a hell of a lot more convinient for many than the shitty apps tvs tend to have
What if the Switch is different? If they wanted to do everything the same as everybody else they'd have built a big box to put under your tv.
How many different devices do you have that can run all the entertainment apps you use? How many of them do you carry with you all the time? I guess at least 1 (your phone) right? How many of those things that you carry with you can play Splatoon or BotW?
From what I've been continually hearing this is Nintendo's thinking with the Switch. It obviously wouldn't shock me if entertainment apps are there, but I personally would bet against it.

Most people carry a phone, phones are smaller than switches, most if out and about would probably prefer to watch on switch to a phone, phones dont have kickstands either, nintendo couldn't have designed a handier system for watching movies when out and about if they tried

Come on, the switch will have Netflix and a browser at the bare minimum, look at all the care in the WiiU and N3DS Browsers, Heck before being available as a download you could get netflix for the wii on a DVD, if that is not comitment i dont know what is, besides what would be the cost of having them there, a few megs in the drive?, I could understand not being able to multi task while playing, but total absenece,nah.
What benefit does Nintendo get from it though? Just because they can doesn't mean they will or should.
Again, I can't provide any proof of what I'm saying so it's just speculation at this point I guess, but don't be surprised if the OS is not as robust as Wii U with regards to entertainment options. I'll leave it at that.
I'll expand slightly on this and add that such apps could come to the device. It's best not to read into this and have a takeaway of "No entertainment apps" or anything of the sort. Things change and are added quite often.

There is a lot haves and have nots, just we have access with smart tv's, chromecast/fire sticks, Roku. Doesn't mean everyone has them and it would be convenient if you want just one device connected to your display.

We've been through it around here a few times with regards to my source and if I'm vetted.
I'm not guaranteeing anything. My primary source is reliable though. Again we can call it speculation, just as you guys are speculating those apps will be there, I'm going to assume that they won't. At least at launch. System OS and features change over time. Let's wait and see!
it would definitely be an unexpected surprise if a far more capable hardware, should 4Gb of RAM and multitouch be true, doesn't get a decent browser and some entertainment apps.
Heh, I'm sure people would complain about the lack of these kinds of apps, too. When that happens, they'll be there. Besides, I can't imagine Netflix not putting someone on the machine and I don't think Nintendo would stop them in any case. I can imagine them not getting in on the ground floor so they won't be there at launch, but their app will be there in the future. I think we can all count on that.

Guys the 3DS even has Netflix and a browser... I would be astonished if the Switch doesn't have a browser and support for Netflix.

(Personal request: could I have a mere balance board app, instantly booting the weight function, without the wiifit crap?
I still use WiiFit U to weight myself with the balance board and keep track of my weight variations over years, it's useful but takes a minute or so to launch. I'm sure it could be done in 10 seconds with an app reduced to measuring weight.)

Do you actually realize that dev kits wouldn't have any entertainment apps because of few reasons:
1. It's not developers' business to know any update on apps; because it's strictly between Nintendo and App developers, not video game developers.
2. it would takes a time for them to get ready for the console's launch (anytime between three months)
3. who would actually have app ready like three months before launch? I don't even think any of companies actually have the apps in their dev kits. if I'm wrong, don't mind me at all.
I did posted it yesterday. It's subjective now because it's a month left for JP and EU. Also I don't know if I could make 30 days. I'm considering to start at 15 Days because there are enough materials for 14-15 days.
I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm an insider. I don't know what the OS looks like, I haven't been told any details of what form it'll take. Only told that it will be simpler and that the Switch, in all aspects, will be focused on games. Playing games, buying games, and sharing functions, and not to expect extra feautures that take away from the focus on games. I was told multiple times that Nintendo wants to give Switch a unique identity and that it doesn't want to compete for features with a million other devices. Nintendo knows you have a phone for browsing and apps and Netflix and everything else. Nintendos strength is in games... perhaps your phone will even be a companion to your Switch.

Well, with Netflix and it's ability to download the movies or television show episodes, it would be nice if we could download movies or episodes so we could take Nintendo Switch with us and watch the shows/movies anywhere we wanted to without worrying about the internet.
That's big if they managed to get it working on Switch but I think it would be a strong feature for Nintendo Switch to have that ability to take the movies/shows to anywhere.
The only problem with this thinking is that Nintendo doesn't really stop programs from being developed on the system. So if Netflix wants to get a dev kit and make an app, Nintendo wouldn't really block that. They may not promote such a thing, but that doesn't stop developers from doing that. So I can imagine them not bring the Netflix or Crunchyroll guys on board initially, but I wouldn't imagine they'd stop them from creating an app down the road, either.

I really don't see what any of this has to do with Netflix's tendency to port their app to literally everything that can handle it. Getting a Netflix app is for all intents and purposes the default state for any tech device that is even vaguely suitable for running it (and let's be real here, the Switch is probably a way better device for Netflix then the vast majority of phones) and getting the app likely won't require any effort from Nintendo. I'm not saying it will necessarily be there from day 1, but it will be super weird if Nintendo is committed enough to this philosophy to block it completely.

Seriously, the Netflix app on the 3DS is way better than on any phone I've ever used. I would expect that to be the case with the Switch too.
All it really needs is Netflix and a browser and already it has a good chunk of the functionality that most people use their tablets for.

Simpler doesn't mean it won't include one of the features that helped the Wii sell so much and has been on every Nintendo device since. Maybe they are slimming down the OS and limiting multitasking, which is reasonable, but there's no reason to not include Netflix and browser functionality in some form.
I can see apps like Netflix missing launch and becoming available down the line.

Less popular service? Probably. I think the app selection will expand compared to Wii u. I expect stuff like Spotify and Shudder down the line.
