Apparently, all the Wii Us were recalled at my local Best Buy

Every week, I go out and about in town, and I usually drop by the Best Buy just to look at things, in case there was a sale, or simply to have a reason to stay out the apartment. I've been stopping at Best Buy once a week for maybe a couple of months now. They had a ton of Wii Us for sale, at 330$CA (I'm in Canada). After Black Friday, they still had most of them there; the console did not see its price drop, so it sure didn't help sales.

So just yesterday, after getting my coffee in town, I stopped at Best Buy, and there were zero Wii Us anywhere. I asked an employee if they had sold them all, and he answered "no, they've all been recalled for some reason". I checked bestbuy.ca, and they do not even sell them on there anymore also.

Is this normal for them to stop selling it like that? Not only is the Switch not even out yet, but they were not really missing shelf space. One would think that if they wanted to get rid of them, they would have dropped the price instead of removing it, if only to get some money back.

I am not seeing them at all on their website right now. I see the Mario Kart 8 bundle but that is actually it (and it's not available within 250+ miles)

Maybe Nintendo is trying to just sell them direct as refurbs on their site and clear shelf space at retailers in preparation for Switch marketing?

3 months is getting a little ahead of themselves, unless nintendo is going to fill that space with even more amiibo.

Yeah, the website is sold out and none of the four Best Buys in my area have had them in weeks, though the same can be said of most of the 3DS models, so who knows what the hell is going on with Nintendo's supply chain?

That being said, the nervousness is starting to set in for me to start picking up the games and accessories I want before they start disappearing and go $Texas.

The 2016 Olympics title was the first to suffer this fate and it's really gonna suck when I get around to picking it up.

I haven't seen any Wii U behind the counter at Best Buy for like two weeks it feels like.

Weird as there's still plenty of space I've seen it much fuller with all systems.

Perhaps they're saving the remaining stock they have to slowly put out in the remaining months before Switch comes out.

It was quite a statement by Nintendo to keep the MSRP of a Wii U at $299. You know it's bad when they don't even give a shit to sell them in the last year or two of it's shelf life.

Hey Nintendo, I'll buy a Wii U if you just reduce the damn price!

Nintendo responds: "Eat shit, and pay what we say. And buy an NES Mini while you're at it to tide yourself over until we shove the Switch down your throat, fuckface."

But that's just my opinion of what Nintendo thinks of its customers.

I would not say they were recalled more like they probably sent them back to the main warehouse for Best Buy to make room for new stock (more than likely for once the Switch comes out in a couple of months). Still quite early to do this though I would think they would wait till after the holiday's.

They've been doing that. Heck, NoA sold white 32 GB units as refurbished, despite never selling them at retail.

Any excess inventory had to sold somewhere.

Quick look at local stores also shows no stock within at least 100 miles. Curious timing, in the last week of the holiday shopping season.

My local Target hasn't had even one in stock over the past few weeks, and I have been in there almost daily, unfortunately.

Why is Nintendo so stubborn with Wii U pricing? It's as if they don't want the console to sell.

More consoles in people's homes = more software sales

Nobody's going to buy that shit for a premium price at this point.

For something really baffling try tracking down a Wii U copy of Mario & Sonic at the 2016 Rio Olympics for less than $100.

Tbh I think they are just moving the inventory to store that are going to sell them this holiday season. In my area all Wii Us, 2DS, & 3DSs are sold out. I've had several Best Buys and others send customers to my shop because they were sold out of Wii Us these past two weeks. And I'll likely be sold out by tomorrow (and that's after having over a dozen transferred in this past weekend). The things are selling.

I searched "Wii U" on bestbuy.com and an auto-complete titled "Wii U in Wii U Consoles" popped up. I clicked on that and it directed me to the Nintendo Switch info page.

When I tried the search again, it gave me the unavailable Mario Kart bundle and the NES Mini as search results.

ETA: no Wii U consoles available locally for me either.
