GAF FOTY 2016-Fail Of The Year-Results- Winner of the 2016 shit sandwich goes to...

As usual, this results are more driven by either emotions or hype(anti-hype), more than anything.

The fact that a relatively average game that some felt over promised aspects and failed to deliver (but still gets updates adding and fixing aspects), won by nearly half the votes over a guy that made racists remarks and who the company basically put inside a bubble not allowing interviews to him or anyone that works to him....

That FFXV even made it there...or that Paper Mario got votes...

Then again the amount of voters was not that high, so votes would be more focused on some sides.

But I mean.
The situation at Crytek is a fail.
United Front Games shutting downs is a fail.
What happened to Lionhead and Fable...
Disney Infinity ...

Yet, none got mentioned.
Studios closing, people without jobs, good game franchises now been on hiatus because of that...but No Man's Sky gets the most vote, because lol Sean Murray (who also got individual votes).

It would be interesting to see how voting would turn out if #2 and #3 votes were counted as well (similar to the GOTY thread). I can see plenty of reasoning for NMS and Plamer though. How NMS was presented and communicated, vs what the game actually turned out to be, along with reports of massive amounts of refunds, etc - I can get that people are upset about it. People had known Palmer was a goof, but didn't realize he was kind of a bad person, yet it perhaps didn't impact them as closely as NMS did. I actually did vote for Lionhead, and stand by that vote, shame what happened to the studio and Fable franchise.

Disappointed no one voted for Star Ocean 5. Or maybe my eyes are failing me,,, I guess no one cared enough to buy it and try it.

I prefer pre-update NMS to Star Ocean 5.

eh its not surprising with the amount of panties no mans sky managed to bunch.

For me its still Palmer Luckey, from the underwhelming launch and reception of the heeadset, price of the headset, delay in touch controllers, headsets that were shipped to stores ahead of predorders, the saying were an open platform, then closing off steam games, then opening them again, topping off with the Face of VR and of the company being shut up in a bunker away from the public after the funding controversy, it was the biggest shit sandwich of a year.

Niche game that got very very very bad reviews. I even forgot it exists until you just mentioned it...

Glad to see FFXV in the top 5, could write a book about all the design flaws of that game.
Still enjoyable. Actually just about going to play it.

Meh. I had a lot of fun with No Man's Sky. It's actually in a really good place right now with more updates coming. Can't stop the hate train though.

Is Battleborne at #6 because it sold poorly? I never played it but heard it's a solid game. Weird that it's there, but Titanfall 2 isn't even on the list. Is there some Battleborne controversy I don't know about?

Yup. This is on the people who bought it.

I'm sorry you didn't like a game neogaf...but the prerelease and release coverage was there to tell you what it actually was rather than some hype speak from the devs.

A lot of people were looking forward to the game and bought it. It was underwhelming and they felt disappointed. 49% of the voters believed it to be the biggest disappointment.

But yeah, they're all mistaken.

I'm glad no one joined Rex Novis in his crusade against the latest masterpiece in the long-running Tom Clancy franchise.

No Man's Sky over Palmer Luckey? Really?

There's a game that disappointed you and then there's a human being who allegedly funded a white supremacist organisation and posted on Reddit how he has way too much money.

I mean, Oculus held a luncheon to convince devs to not drop support for it.

Why were they looking forward to a space exploration game from a developer known for Joe Danger? Because of the marketing?

No sympathy here.

There were other reasons to vote for NMS that went beyond disappointment.

Nobody forced you to buy the game before reviews came out.

Joe Danger was pretty dope.

It sure is! Much different type of game though.

I wouldn't blindly buy a video game from a developer who's only known for one type of game though. Heck, I wouldn't blindly buy most video games. Wait for reviews/release coverage.

Correct. If that were the case, I'm sure that person would be top of the list. As it stands, it doesn't surprise me that a majority of voters believed the NMS release was the biggest failure in this here gaming forum.

In hindsight, it always makes sense to wait. But people get excited about things and I don't think it's wrong that they do. Sometimes what you were excited for isn't what is released and it results in disappointment. Some of that is overhype, sure. But we're talking almost 50% of the votes here. Can't chalk it all up to ignorance.

This is the same forum that flipped out when Polygon told them not to preorder games. Sensing a pattern here, I'm feeling like the failure is on GAF. I hope a lesson is learned.

Dumb winner IMO

NMS was just an average to bad game with shitty PR from a team who had no idea what they were doing

What Palmer Lucky did is far more damaging and terrible.

Capcom ran their premier fighting game franchise into the ground in a completely unforced error

Mighty No 9 forever changed how people approach and view Kickstarter

If I remember correctly the OP didn't list nominees so No Man's Sky made a lot of sense as the biggest fail of the year. People automatically wouldn't think of a person as eligible when seeing the thread title.

Street Fighter V is still a very good game and essentially anyone who played the betas or followed the game knew what they were getting. Mighty No. 9 was bad but it was a train wreck over several years so when it released in 2016 as a mediocre game a lot of the sting was already gone.

No Man's Sky is a special case. Not only was the hype for this game astronomical with thousands of people having unrealistic expectations (which wasn't the developer's fault) the game didn't even meet the expectations set by the trailers or info about the game they revealed (which very much was the developers's fault). I already pegged this game as the biggest disappointment in 2016 before it launched and that was if it met the standards set by the developers (things like having multiplayer) but it couldn't even do that.

Just because someone is excited for something doesn't mean they can't be disappointed when it's not what they hoped. You're talking about the level of hype some people placed around NMS before release and I get that. But a lot of people simply wanted what was sold to them and were disappointed when they didn't.

The hypists though? They deserve the disappointment, sure.

No surprises with NMS winning. Many people got burned.

I am surprised by Street Fighter V on that list. SFV was a big sales failure, but the people who bought the game seemed to enjoy it.

Metroid Prime Federation Force getting only one vote is super surprising; I guess people just forgot it existed.

Does anyone know when the actual goty voting thread is going to happen? :) Can't wait to list my 3 games. Or do remakes and special re-releases count?

Fail of the year isn't necessarily worst game though. I own SFV and think it's great but that was my vote because of how poorly Capcom botched it's release. Its name is now tainted regardless of the quality

I think in part it's the title of the award, that's at least why I wouldn't have thought about him.

Palmer Lucky should be winner of Asshole Industry Figure of the Year award, but I'm not sure that I'd call him a "fail." He was unfortunately pretty successful in his efforts and still hasn't really faced the music over what he did. I guess you could give Facebook the FOTY for not doing something about him?

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I guess NMS failing was caused by overhype too?
