Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Includes Nearly 20% Of 360 Library

That leaves 1,562 Xbox 360 games that could potentially be played on Xbox One. There are currently 308 backward compatible games as of this writing meaning 19.72% of the Xbox 360 library that could be played on Xbox One is already part of the BC library. If Microsoft and third party publishers keep up this pace then it is feasible that over half of the Xbox 360 library could be made backward compatible by this time next year.

The Xbox One backwards compatibility program was initially announced during Microsoft’s E3 2015 press conference. The program had a soft rollout on that day and was officially launched in November of 2015.

Not to bad for about a year. Here is the guy who originally crunched the numbers:

For me, bc has been amazing. It has allowed me to buy older games with confidence since I know they are being preserved within the ecosystem. Since backwards compatibility was announced, I've played:

Beyond Good & Evil HD
Super Meat Boy
Burnout Paradise
Mass Effect
De Blob 2
Sonic & Knuckles
Monkey Island
Ducktales Remastered
Xcom
Spelunky
Tron
Dark Souls
Fall Out 3
Fable 3
Forza Horizon
And of course all the Rare Replay games

Today I'm buying Catherine and Killer is Dead for basically nothing. I hope that Microsoft continues this preservation throughout future generations. It would be incredible having thousands of games in my library dating back to the early days of Xbox 360 (or even earlier). It's even awesome just being able to screenshot/record/stream older games. How have you been enjoying backwards compatibility?

20% is good. But there sure are a lot of good games sitting in that 80%. Hoping to see big strides in getting some of that stuff in 2017.

It's the best thing about Xbox ONE, and my favourite feature from this gen. Being able to play, screenshot, record, stream... older games is amazing. I hope the BC list keeps growing!!

They've been hitting it out the park the past few months. I reckon we'll be at 50-60% come this time next year with it more or less complete of possible titles come late 2018.

The potential titles are likely a lot less than that due to rights issues, music licenses, and the like. Still cool though

Yeah, that's the most upsetting thing in all this.

Likewise, I'm sure there are many stubborn devs holding back their titles. I'm shocked they finally added the Bioshocks, but it's obvious they held them back until after the remaster was out a few months.

Im still hoping for fable anniversary BC and hoping they include some fixes for the reported bugs that people claim are pretty bad.

Do we know how many games actually suffer from this? I'm curious.

If I was to guess I'd say around 20% but that's just a number from my ass. Also FWIW if there's music licenses they might still be able to put it on but with recordings/screenshots disabled (like Bioshock and I think there's another game that does this too)

The feature that pushed me into getting a One. Credit given where credit is due, Microsoft turned it around after the unveiling catastrophe.

Yeah probably. After the podcast about it it all made more sense why we never see certain titles with BC. Some of the legal stuff must be crazy to figure out.

All that in a years time is more impressive (especially since the One's performance is better). Next year will bring more titles (and new titles). 2017 may be "the year" that we've been waiting for...lololol (until it's 2018...but 2018 is the year I'm waiting for...for Shenmue 3)

The 20% is slightly misleading because we are talking about a ton of shovelware and sports games that we know won't be ported over. That said, there are still plenty of good/great games that can and should be added to the service over the coming year(s). It will be interesting to see what Year 2 has in store as most major AAA titles made their way on BC Year 1.

Why not?

if I was EA I'd give MS the greenlight to go ahead. Even on games like FIFA 08 or something. At the end of the day EA isn't doing any of the work and it pads up EA access.

The servers for those games are down but you might be right.

Out of curiosity, what's the reason that Microsoft needs to relicense every title for their BC effort, whereas it never appeared necessary in the past (PS1 -> PS2 BC, Wii -> Wii U BC)? I assume them being able to sell digital copies of games is a factor? Could it also because of their emulator solution, which requires tinkering with each game?

I have a feeling it has to do with the fact that they are doing software emulation, where your examples do bc through hardware.

You can still play them offline though, I mean I doubt anyone is actually going to go back and play it, but when EA just needs to say "go for it MS", I don't see why they wouldn't. MS won't say "nah we're not doing that" either cause it sets a bad precedent, even though it's literally a complete waste of time.

That was my initial assumption as well, but I believe more recent PS3 models use software emulation to play PSOne discs, which is why I'm thinking it might be because Microsoft needs to be more hands on with the individual game (working on am emulator that targets the game specifically to make sure it performs well).

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that they are digital as well? All Xbox titles need to be downloaded, where in previous gens you just played off the disc.

Yeah, that would make sense. They wouldn't be able to just offer free downloads of games without a publisher's permission.

No I am sure MS would gladly add them to the list. I just don't think there is much of an incentive for EA to do it. Plus, only a handful of them are available digitally. That said, we got DOOM 3. So what do I know.

Personally, I would love to see if they add some of the OG Xbox titles to the list.

Oh well I think EA Access helps here. It let's them advertise stuff like "Pay $5 for access to 100+ games" and shit and makes it look like it gives more value than it does.

Although, Origin Access doesn't have any FIFA earlier than 15 either. So who knows.

Man, I would love to have the NCAA Football games but I know that will literally never happen.

I bought NCAA Football 14 just for that reason. I am hoping that someday it will make it.

Speaking of EA. I am surprised Dragon Age has not made it yet. Same for Dead Space 2 and to a lesser extent 3.

A BC copy of NCAA Football would do really well right now. I'm guessing that because of licensing there's no chance of that though.

Unfortunately the Kinect games apparently won't get ported. I wish MS devs could work their magic and emulate a Kinect v1 with a v2, but they obviously won't care.
Too bad, there are a few gems there, which are the main reason I'm keeping my 360 (all other games in my backlog are sitting there waiting for BC)

BC is great, but I'd wish they'd focus on 360 or console exclusives. I know the point isn't to "rescue" games stuck on one or two consoles, but I think it would help breathe new life into games otherwise forgotten.

Games like Comic Jumper and Skate 3 were real highlights this year. Here's hoping 2017 is the year I can ditch the 360 hardware.

I've spent a lot of time playing Skate 3 on my Xbone this year. I really appreciate the work that has gone into the BC initiative. It's meant my Xbox gets a lot more playtime.

Why these articles keep forgetting xblig?

SOOOOO many good games for so cheap. I wish the press yould make a big deal about it so Ms can preserve it going forward as well.

Fifa is very controlling with the license, it's not EA being a problem. I was told that if EA ported a Fifa game to another platform straight port with no changes they have to go back to every club and player for approval. That's a lot of work for little gain for EA.

It's great when my old purchased games pop up as 'ready to install'. I've enjoyed/discovered many 360 games via GwG but I've also bought many games like I couldn't play back in the day like South Park, both The Force Unleashed games, Bully. Also, games like Blue Dragon, Xcom: Enemy Within or both Fallout 3 and NV for convenience. Lost Odyssey for free was just a perfect MS xmas gift to me.
I hope we get any sort of number other than "% users have played a BC title". No need to be specific but something like "x millions of 360 BC games sold" would a start.

Again, impressive feature.

Ya number from ass is all I would be able to provide too haha :p

I mean, just think of all the THQ games. Who purchased the rights? Track them down and maybe find who did. Do they own distribution?

All the movie tie in games, and licensed property

All the games with soundtracks that they maybe only licensed for the 360. If the company you licensed it from wants you to pay again do you?

Stuff like that could easily add up to 20%
