It's that time of year again to stand up taller, push your glasses back with two fingers and puff up your chest as we vote for our favorite anime of the year. We know everyone here loves to pound their chests and try to prove that their tastes are much better than everyone else's, but now is time to compare and see if your favorite trash matches up.

Vote for any of your favorite shows, with a short description why, so that the next other GAFfers will be able to find a good list of anime recommendations. Of course, you're also welcome to praise your favorite series or laugh at other people's inferior taste, but keep it civil!

Categories:

There are two of them:

Series of the Year - Top Ten
Films and OVAs of the Year - Top Five

Not sure what your favorite anime is? Basically, if it follows an episodic format and you watched it weekly or monthy, on the web or the TV, it's probably a series. Otherwise, it's an OVA/film. If you're still not sure, you could always search or ask here.

! Important Notice: Eligible for this voting is anything that had even one episode broadcast in Japan during 2016. If it started in 2015 or if it will continue airing during 2017 doesn't make it ineligible, so keep this in mind when you make your lists. American animated series, like Steven Universe, are ineligible, sorry.

Rules:

1. You can make two lists (must be numbered in order) and both of them will be in descending order based on how many points you assign to each show. For the series, you give 10 points to the first one, 9 to the second and so on, and for OVAs/films you start with 5 points.

Scoring Example:

TV Series:
1. Show A ; 10 points
2. Show B ; 9 points
3. Show C ; 8 points
4. Show D ; 7 points
5. Show E ; 6 points
6. Show F ; 5 points
7. Show G ; 4 points
8. Show H ; 3 points
9. Show I ; 2 points
10. Show J; 1 point

Movies:
1. Your Mom Cries; 5 points
2. The Cat Did it; 4 points
3. Caughing hairballs; 3 points
4. Loving Yuri; 2 points
5. Imouto Crazy; 1 points

Honorable Mention:
x. Cat Bullies ; 0 points
x. Puppy Love; 0 points

2. You don't have to vote on both of the categories.

3. You don't have to vote only ten and five series and OVAs/films respectively. You can actually vote less than that, even just one if you feel like it. Also, any honorable mentions will not get points, (but could be used as "tie-breakers" if it comes down to that, so make sure to mark them appropriately. Feel free to add as many shows as you want, but take notice when you make your list that anything after the ones that get points, will get nothing.

4. If you want to change your list, please edit your post before this thread is locked. (01/31/2017 23:59 PST)

5. Please try to add comments for as many shows as you can. It's not mandatory, but it will help in order to have some meaningful discussions here.

6. When you name a show, try to use the full English name of it and don't use abbreviations or nicknames.

! Please, try to follow this guideline !
Code:
1. Series A; Your thoughts on Series A.
2. Series B; Your thoughts on Series B.
3. Series C; Your thoughts on Series C.
4. Series D; Your thoughts on Series D.
5. Series E; Your thoughts on Series E.
6. Series F; Your thoughts on Series F.
7. Series G; Your thoughts on Series G.
8. Series H; Your thoughts on Series H.
9. Series I; Your thoughts on Series I.
10. Series J; Your thoughts on Series J.

1. Film/OVA A; Your thoughts on Film/OVA A.
2. Film/OVA B; Your thoughts on Film/OVA B.
3. Film/OVA C; Your thoughts on Film/OVA C.
4. Film/OVA D; Your thoughts on Film/OVA D.
5. Film/OVA E; Your thoughts on Film/OVA E.

For honorable mentions use this as many times as you want, UNDER each of your lists:

*A couple special Notes*
Thunderbolt Fantasy- Yes, the below is not traditional "anime," however, it will be a special entry into the AOTY voting this year and votes will be accepted/counted.
ZK4uuIA.gif

> this decision is not up for debate and do not $hit up the thread with complaints/justifications.

- If an anime has had several seasons aired in the same calendar year, they will be counted together as 1 vote (example: Haikyuu)
- Movies released at separated times and as separated films will be counted separately (example: Kizumonogatari I & II)

Ok... this was my first year watching seasonal animes and paying attention to this industry. For my first top, these are my picks:

TV Series:
1. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
2. Jojo's Bizarre Adventures: Diamond is Unbreakable
3. Mob Psycho 100
4. Kiznaiver
5. Re:Zero
6. Space Patrol Luluco
7. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless
8. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
9. Erased
10. My Hero Academia

Honorable Mentions:
x. 91 Days ;
x. Bungou Stray Dogs ;
x. Flying Witch ;
x. Konosuba ;
x. Yuri!!! on Ice ;

Movies:
1. Your Name ;
2. Kizumonogatari II
3. Kizumonogatari I

1. Transformers: More Than Meets The Eyes: Transformers is a Japanese franchise, so this counts, right? Best characters, best story, best gay romances. Cyclonus = best boy!

2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II: The best anime. Patrick = tsundere of 2016.

3. Survivor: Millennials vs Gen X: Too melodramatic not to be an anime. Someone's mom dying an hour after he won, the hero we deserved falling just short, more gay guys than Yuri on Ice, what's not to love?

4. The Presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders: He made anime real.

5. The Game Awards: Schick Hydro Bot makes this the best mecha anime since G-Reco.

6. Zero Time Dilemma: Worse than any anime, so that makes it the best anime by proxy, I suppose?

7. The Jimquisition: Jim Sterling is super anime.

8. The Presidential Debate Episode of Around the Horn: Better than any Shinkai film!

9. Censorship!: Every anime fan was talking about this all year, so I guess that makes it one of the best anime of the year.

10. Gundam: The Origin's Director getting fired: Finally, Shirobako Season 2 is here.

1. Mob Psycho 100

Sure you might be able to use extremely powerful and well-animated psychic powers, but if it can't impress the person you like, then what is the point? At the core of this show is the theme of self-improvement, and seeing Mob's adventures as well as the characters he affects and is affected by makes for an extremely enjoyable watch.

77907.jpg

2. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Shows about things that are distinctly Japanese can be a bit of rough time, as there are cultural walls to scale and there is a high chance of things going over your head if you are unfamiliar. But give this show a chance and stick with it because you get probably one of the best drama pieces in a while.

79156.jpg

3. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

Look. It's JoJo. Do I really need to say anything?

81992.webp

4.Haikyuu!!: Season 3 - Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa

More of that shonen volleyball goodness.

80039.jpg

5. Flying Witch

Anime as a medium is generally very high energy, so every now and then we need a series to temper that. This year we had Flying Witch which is just a comfy adventure of a professional witch doing witch things. It's a very relaxing show.

78745.webp

6. My Hero Academia

I much prefer a simple, cliche story done well versus a innovative story done poorly. The best thing about MHA is it is just executed so well that you can get invested in it's story, despite knowing exactly what will happen.

77831.jpg

7. Konosuba

Everyone is an idiot and a jerk and I love it so. When you have a genre which is serious business most of the time, going the opposite direction tonally will always be fun.

77968.jpg

8. Ajin

Waaaah, it's CGI, it's so ugly and off putting. That is not an excuse. As another example of "don't judge a book by it's cover" Ajin was a show that could have easily collapsed under its story and CG, but it makes different narrative choices compared to it's contemporaries like Parasyte and Tokyo Ghoul which makes for an interesting watch.

78466.jpg

9. Kiznaiver

As someone who has gotten into my fair share of issues due to a lack of empathy, the premise of this show was very interesting to me. It is an interesting idea taking six completely different people and making them bond through shared pain, as well as exploring the mysteries of their world. It is well executed for the most part, but Mari Okada's melodrama permeates the story so hard that it becomes a little to distracting, preventing a higher rating.

79073.jpg

10. Space Patrol Luluco

This is the most apologetically TRIGGER show ever. If you like that you will like this, if not...maybe give it a chance anyway.

Honorable Mentions

Keijo!!!!!!!!: I'll be honest, I was tempted to give this one a pity point in 10th place because it is rare that series surprise me this much.

Gi(a)rlish Number: It's cynical Shirobako, but not as good as Shirobako.

Thunderbolt Fantasy: These puppets are lit.

Movies/OVA
1. your name
2. A Silent Voice
3. Kizumonogatari I

Series

1. Mob Psycho 100 ; Felt most strongly about this being #1. The rest are arbitrary to some degree.
2. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable ; Rohan gloating over Janken Boy is my aesthetic.
3. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu ; Some high-minded tosh about a dead art form. At least it's not about dictionaries.
4. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless ; To be so entertaining despite having what is clearly an undiagnosed nutrient deficiency and/or endocrine disorder deserves respect.
5. Love Live! Sunshine!! ; Aquors best LL squad. Mirai zura!
6. Kuromukuro ; Please get in the robot, Yukina.
7. Miss Bernard said. ; I felt like my teenage self was being simultaneously hugged and ethered.
8. To Be Hero ; Gross, but, fun animation and surprising ambition.
9. Sound! Euphonium Season 2 ; A disappointment, but I enjoyed much of the Asuka material and still wish I could adopt Kumiko somehow.
10. Konosuba ; Hit and miss for me, carried by highs. EXPLO- etc.

x. Flip Flappers ; You tried Oshiyama, and I salute you.
x. WWW.WORKING!! ; The series that launched a thousand ships, some of which have holes in them.
x. Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou ;

Films

1. A Silent Voice ; I'll tell you what wasn't silent: My sob-
2. Miss Hokusai ; I didn't vote for this last year, so.
3. Anthem of the Heart ; That 玉子/王子 joke is A+.
4. Kizumonogatari I: Tekketsu-hen ; Kiss-shot is the best girl in Monogatari.
5. Kizumonogatari II: Nekketsu-hen ; Hanekawa is the best girl in Monogatari.

x. Doukyuusei ;
x. Boruto: Naruto the Movie ;

incredible visualization of the mental state of a person along with well realized heart warming moments

3. My Hero Academia -
A Shonen action with a very good spirit and message.

My Picks

oBF7lK9.gif

1. Erased; From start to finish the show kept me glued to the screen to see what happened next. An emotional and thrilling story with a sci-fi twist. One of my top shows ever.

QedPXe4.gif

2. Konosuba; I couldn't stop laughing. Seriously from the first few minutes of the show, until the very end, I laughed, laughed more and then kept laughing. The characters are all lively and are complete jerks to one another, but this was a great take on the "stuck in a fantasy world" LN dribble that's out there. So happy Season 2 starts in the next couple weeks

CVr1lPw.jpg

3. Re;Zero; Fu(k Subaru... Seriously. However, this was a crazy ride to follow each week and you never really knew where the show was going to take you.

KoChQRU.jpg

4. Twin Star Exorcists; Classic shounen, but this one has had a great mix of action, adventure, comedy and some touching moments.

1nadEAx.jpg

5. Mob Psycho 100; This was a crazy fun ride and well worth the experience.

c3JfM2k.jpg

6. WWW.Working!!; This was funny. Shipping and comedy each week was a great experience.

X2gjeLJ.jpg

7. Kiznaiver; Poor girl got rekt, rekt again and then rekt again; thus is the fate of a childhood friend.

vY4R2Nq.jpg

8. Poco's Udon World; It's hard to describe just how heartwarming and pleasant to watch this show is. Poco is a treasure that should be experienced by all.

dhB3lGs.png

9. 91 Days; Deceit and Revenge are the drivers of this show and what a ride it was.

8EW45CS.png

10. Alderamin on the Sky; The show was just all sorts of awesome to experience this year. Part military strategy, part sloth, part bloody mess, part intimacy.

Honorable Mention:
x. Tales of Zestiria the X; great adaptation that really adjusted the game's story for the better!
x. March comes in like a lion; Emotional roller coaster about Rei and his life.
x. Snow White with Red Hair (S2); very cute shoujo, but enough with the kidnappings already dammit.
x. Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash; better than expected with the beautiful watercolor art.
x. My Hero Academia; I really wanted to put this in the top 10, I just couldn't pull the trigger since you had to wait 23 mins each episode or that outstanding 1 min of excellence.
x. Food Wars! The Second Plate; It's Soma and it's fun
x. Orange - I really wanted to score this much higher
x. Sweetness & Lightning - cuteness & fun the show
x. Planetarian - Short, emotional and beautiful
x. Hundred - nothing can compare to the gross amount of otaku trope pandering this show managed to sustain throughout the whole season. Make no mistake, this is trash, they just get a shout out for perfecting trash.

Movies:

1)Working: Lord of Takanashi; I forgot that this was in 2016, but it was an awesome movie to close out the series.
3)Kizumonogatari II; Catgirl svored sone major points in this movie; what a treat to watch.
3)Anthem of the Heart; Beautiful movie full of nice art and great themes. Just beautiful.
4)Kizumonogatari I; Amazing. Probably should be #1, but I goes here instead.
5)Konosuba OVA; Hilarious lewdness animated. My goodness this was classic

TxJsBff.gif

1. MY HERO ACADEMIA
You might say, but Gold this looks like your typical superhero shonen manga adaptation what makes it so special? MHA is just everything right about shonen executed just so god damn well. It's is just full of colors! A colorful cast of amazing characters, a colorful world, an explosive rivalry and boy is it good. The MC, Deku is your typical MC wanting to become a super hero just like is idol ALL Might. As a character he is so lovable, so likeable that you just can't not rout for him, care for him and hope for him to succeed. It also features the coolest Hero in the entire world, All Might(I swear if you don't think that at the end you are crazy). Then you have the key moments(mainly awesome fight scenes)...WHICH ARE JUST SO GOD DAMN WELL EXECUTED! You feel the emotions behind the characters actions and every hit they exchange. Backed by an amazing OST like You say run some of the moments were so amazing that I just couldn't hold the inner fanboy inside of me and when it ended up coming out it usually came with tears of joy at just how good everything was.

The only God damn negative I could say about MHA was that it was too short, but lucky us/me a second season is coming soon! GO BEYOND! PLUS ULTRA!!!

2.Haikyu
9cb21d6b9b2138d1e85e2d84295bb5d2.jpg

Haikyu is a blood pumping, full of emotions and a super joy to watch. I was at the edge of seat for the whole freakin time screaming with the characters and crying with them. Just outstanding.

3. Poco's Udon World
f8f43b53554f2b4059eaecb15f0cd528.gif

This was my biggest surprise of the year. At first I was expecting your typical feel good anime, but oh boy was I wrong! It was more then that! It was a SUPER feel good anime! I don't think I finished any episode without crying over how sweet and lovable Poco was and how he influence the lives of people around him. The best SoL of the whole year.

4.Tales of Zestiria the X
6e3b6ffdc55f23641d694711d1000d76.jpg

Ufotable brought Zesteria's world to life in such a beautiful way. Amazing looking world, amazing looking battles and a great story, but what really makes this anime shine is how well Zestiria's cast transfer well to the anime side. When I say this anime as a awesome cast, believe me people, it's outstanding!

5.Occultic;Nine
92e6935cff1b424d939a3adb9c22fef7.jpg

O;9 was a really franticly paced show and it sadly scared people because of it, but for me it was the complete opposite it made me fall in love with the show instantly. The almost constant critical level keep my attention right at the screen ending each week with a *WHAT! GIVE ME MORE!* feeling. As for the cast, the show has this Durarara-ish multi characters plot lines combine with very colorful characters. Handling dark themes, it's otherwise colorful/ extravagant artstyle makes for a really good mix.

6.Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans S2
659ff82cf4955b3199e0978350353636.jpg

A wonderful continuation from the great season 1. The cast is back and greater then ever and Mika shows us how crazy he still is. BUT the major thing to note here, is that IBO has probably the best gundam mech action scenes from the whole gundam series. Barbatos is truly one epic beats.
7.Ajin
047c4037f88d6b4bc6da7112afc10b65.jpg

Ajin will be one of the most overlooked show of this year simply because of 1 fact, it's CG, but anybody who skips this show because of it is really just missing out on one fantastic show. CG gives many more possibility for action scenes and Polygon studio makes great use of these new possibilites. The MC is aways quite unique with his personality and that makes for some very interesting plot elements. Also best villain.Don't let your CG aversion keep you away from this!

8.Tanaka-kun is always listless
9d5937df2d86718178e27623781ec47c.gif

You want a beautiful and funny show, with a super likable cast of characters? Then look no further then Tanaka-kun. It made me smile so much! One of this year best SoL.

9.Twin Star Exorcist
841573c36a428897e707389b10a3d5b6.jpg

The twin star adaptation is something quite special this year. While it started pretty much like any other adaptation the show slowly went on to become its own thing completely telling the TSE story in its own way. In an great way it succeded and I love it! Highly recommended for any shonen fan!

10.World Trigger
a8fd7979f886920929310693daf7f680.jpg

This was a surprise hit for me from last year that finished in 2016. It's one of the new shonen with a great Identity of it's own. Using the stuff it call Trion it let the show do things any other typical other from its genre couldn't do. Backed by lovable characters it succeced at being awesome. Another highly recommended title for any shonen fan in need of a long shonen show.

Top 10 Anime Shows:

1. Mob Psycho 100 ; Bones really hit this out of the park with the production. This show gets crazy, it gets interesting, it gets imaginative, and it gets so damn fun. It is a very expressive and fun show with such top notch animation.

2. Kiznaiver ; A highly interesting and enjoyable show from Trigger that really shines thanks to the really strong direction, art design, and a great cast of characters, that are filled with different personalities and quirks as they come together.

3. Konosuba ; The show that didn't really failed to bring out a lot of laughter. It's been such a delight seeing the how the characters go about their daily life in amusing ways with success or things that bites them in the rear. The show even has funny and interesting takes on tropes relating to RPG like worlds.

4. Flying Witch ; A show that feels so relaxing and good with a nice grounded take on witches. If there is a show that I want to go chilling with, this would be it.

5. Thunderbolt Fantasy ; It not anime, but somehow it kind of is, and yet maybe not, but maybe it is. Still, this was another awesome work involving Gen Urobuchi with some beautiful uses of puppets, especially the action scenes.

6. 91 Days ; An HBO show in anime form. It is a enjoyable mafia revenge that even comes up with bit of a open ended but still satisfying ending.

7. Bungo Stray Dogs ; What started out pretty mixed, became quite a enjoyable ride with a great cast of characters and a intriguing premise of these characters and their abilities being based on real life authors.

8. Space Patrol Luluco; It's a show with Imaishi at the helm. It's a short series, but it made sure to be a freaking blast with a shorter length and have much of the characteristic that trigger shows tends to have.

9. Sweetness and Lightning; A nice slice of life about food that has one of the best child characters ever.

10. Sound! Euphonium S2 ; Despite being a disappointing follow up to one of the best from last year due to some of the bleh drama, it still offers much of the beauty and charm that helps make this series stand out in a good way.

Honorable Mentions:

x. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress ; Kabaneri is a dumb show, that also included a really weak villain, but damn was it still quite enjoyable in ways. It feels like it was wanting to focus on being so cool and crazy, that it succeeded in that to a extent. The presentation was also really great that including some really beautiful shots and great character designs. It pretty much felt like a dumb but enjoyable and beautiful spring blockbuster, so while it doesn't make it to the top ten, it still stands out for me to least mention it.

Watch this and then change your vote to put Haikyu as #1. Haikyu is so good that if it counted as 2 separate entries (both S2 & S3 aired during the year) it'd have taken the top 2 spots in my ranking. Great characters, great character development, great OST, and very good animation.

2. Mob Psycho 100
The show is just incredibly creative, and the animation is superb. Everything is so expressive and vibrant.

3. My Hero Academia
It feels weird to say considering I placed it higher than Diamond is Unbreakable, but I actually think is a weaker show than DiU. It has some problems with pacing (did we really need flashbacks to remind us of stuff that happened in that same episode?????) but I placed it higher because overall it had more standout moments than the shows listed below. The first Smash, Deku vs Bakugou in the building, All Might vs Nomu, they're all good moments and an indicator of what the show is capable of when it's at its best. It might have more lows than some of other shows listed, but its highs are hard to top.

4. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
The stands got more nutty, the asspulls turned super saiyan, it's JoJo at its best. And I still have no idea whether that guy was an alien or not.

5. Re:Zero
It's probably the most divisive show that aired this year, but the discussion around it was great and it was a lot of fun speculating about what was going to happen next. The story was a simple one, but it was so interesting because you never knew where it was going to go and it was a lot of fun seeing Subaru overcome the various obstacles with the knowledge and experience gained from his various deaths. Sadly the ending was garbage and that's the only reason I have it at #5, if things didn't conveniently work out for Subaru in the end (because they wanted a happy ending) it'd have been top 3 for sure because while not necessarily being the best show, it was definitely one of the most enjoyable. E.M.T.

6. Ajin
The main character is surprisingly a dickhead and that made the show really enjoyable to watch. Nearly every anime MC wants to protect someone, protect his/her ideals, be a hero or whatever so it's fairly refreshing when you get a MC who's a dick to almost everyone because he just wants a simple life.

7. Konosuba
The opening episode was hilarious and the show pretty much never stopped being funny. It doesn't take itself seriously and the characters all bounce off each other really well.

8. Hibike! Euphonium 2
Gorgeous visuals and the characters are pretty fun. It's a shame they went in hard with the melodrama because the show would have been better without it.

9. Keijo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The show is dumb, but it's fun and that's all it needed to be.

10. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei!!
GAR. I was told they toned down the grim aspects of the show so I finally decided to check it out again and this season was pretty interesting.

TV Series:

1. Mob Psycho 100 ; Beautiful animation, artistic creativity, good action and a story with a focus on social anxiety. Very enjoyable anime and it has something for everyone. If One Punch Man was good, this one is perfect.

2. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu ; I watched it recently, despite airing about a year ago. How I regret that! Probably the (not so) hidden gem of this year. Captivating rakugo performances, the dramatic moments feel earned and the bromance between the two main characters is realistic and yet very exciting to watch. Also, it's worth mentioning how it takes place during the Showa Era, something not so common.

3. Sound! Euphonium S2 ; It got (fairly) criticized for being a bit too melodramatic compared to S1, but it was still very enjoyable. A great main character, a really breathtaking music performance on episode 5 and the usual attention to the details that KyoAni is known for. A show that makes you feel like being in a school band.

4. Space Patrol Luluco ; TRIGGER saved anime. Mix Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill and Inferno Cop and you get this amazing, short series. A homage to many TRIGGER projects, like Little Witch Academia, and yet it's enjoyable as its own thing. It can be epic, comedically random and heartwarming, even at the same time. I don't think it's an overstatement saying that this had the best finale this year, the climax was so satisfying and so damn exciting to watch.

5. Kiznaiver ; TRIGGER saved anime. Again. A fantastic group of characters, each one with their own flaws. Strong character moments both for individuals and the whole group. It's all about their bonds, formed though their emotional wounds. Maybe the biggest surprise this year. Also, it's the perfect shipping show, if you're into that.

6. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable ; It's not my favourite JoJo part, the middle episodes are a bit messy, but it's certainly the most good looking. A lot of creativity this time and the result is a very artistic approach to the series, via neat framing, transitions and vibrant colours. Of course, I also have to mention how good the main antagonist is and how much I loved the majority of the finale.

7. The Great Passage ; A very unique and mature anime that deals with the making of a dictionary. Despite sounding really boring, and arguably being a bit tiring to binge watch, it was actually pretty fun and very interesting. Despite dealing with serious subjects from adult and work life, it has a very optimistic tone and the end is really satisfactory.

8. Flying Witch ; The most calming and "feels good" show of the season. A Slice of Life show with a good dose of magic, taking place in the countryside. Initially, I wasn't very fond of it but as I watched more episodes, I've come to really appreciate it.

9. Girlish Number ; A look on the seiyuu industry with a very cynic, lazy and arrogant heroine. Very cute show, full of charming characters. Despite this being a comedy and sort of a parody, there are quite a few moments that feel very real and tackle actual problems, concerning the work and the family. Also, best character faces this year.

10. Macross Delta ; I mostly included this because I was introduced to Macross this year and hopefully more people will get to watch this series. So... Airfights, love triangles and songs. This is Macross. Delta kind of botchered the first two aspects of the series, despite having a couple of really good action moments. However, the songs are very good and the "pop idols that help in war", even if it sounds dumb, works pretty nice in the series' context. The main heroine, Freyja, is full of energy and optimism, the show is worth it just for her.

x. March comes in like a lion ; The show hasn't finished yet, but I'm including it as a honorable mention because I have high expectations for it and the last few episodes haven't disappointed me. Strong visuals and a lot of heartwarming moments, a show that focuses on loneliness, depression and a professional shogi player / student who tries to cope with his life.

x. Flip Flappers ; A show that could potentially be on my top 5, maybe even top 3, of the year but unfortunately was ruined by dumb decisions regarding its plot. Fantastic animation almost on Mob Psycho 100's level, colourful worlds and a homage to a lot of different things, from Mad Max to old mecha shows.

Movies:

1. Kizumonogatari II: Nekketsu-hen ; A lot of good action, spectacular animation, Shaft outdoing themselves on the visual department and a lot of Monogatari's charm.

2. Kizumonogatari I: Tekketsu-hen ; Even if you don't know what Monogatari is, you're in for a treat.

I can't talk about movies, but for shows, I watched a few that I liked...

1. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable. AMAZING adaptation of my favourite JoJo part. The aesthetics and art direction are really sleek and striking, the voice acting and casting was perfect, and they adapted everything 1:1 while maintaining virtually flawless pacing. This is how you do an adaptation.

2. Space Patrol Luluco. Didn't think I would like this as much as I did! The characters were all really charming, the animation was straightforward but stylish all the same, and some great cameos from Trigger's other shows. Teddyloid's music was great, and the show's simplicity really worked in its favour. It managed to be pretty striking at times and you really grow to love the characters.

3. Haikyuu. I don't normally watch sports series but I was surprised at how much I liked the characters and everything. Production I.G.'s animation was really fluid and captured the mood of a sports game pretty well.

This was the first year in a while that I went out of my way to watch whatever anime interested me, and coming out with three favourites is pretty good. I watched the first few episodes of Kiznaiver and I thought it was cool but it fell by the wayside. I should finish that up.

Boy 2016 was a never ending trash fire wasn't it? Well at least there was good anime.

fyi, these screenshots are from April Fools' when Crunchyroll turned all the subs yellow like a 90s OVA bootleg.

Simply put, Rakugo is the best TV anime series since 2014's Ping Pong the Animation. Rakugo is a story about artists of a dying art form, with the first season framed in a massive flashback in Post-War Japan. The show is expertly crafted, from the rakugo performances to the character animation and even the characters' postures and speaking style to the framing and direction. It really is the best show of the year for me, in a strong year.

2. Mob Psycho 100

I'm sure most people have heard of One Punch Man - last year's winner - by now. But I would reckon most have only heard whispers of the Mangaka's other and superior series Mob Psycho 100. While One Punch Man offers a flashy, well animated and immediately interesting parody of shonen manga and superheroes, Mob Psycho 100 chooses to be more human. Mob has incredible powers like Saitama, but has staunch morals about using them because he doesn't have much else. Physically weak, mentally average, dull looking and completely milquetoast, Mob searches for a way to fit in with his peers without constantly relying on his powers guided by his well intentioned conman teacher, Reigan. Mob Psycho 100 is just an all around better made show then One Punch Man. Its BONES at their best - the show looks fantastic and is creative at every turn, the storyboarding and directing are exceptional, and the fights - even the fights - are better then Saitama's faire. While it may lack the instant hook One Punch Man offers in its premise and the parodying of well known Western superhero tropes, Mob Psycho 100 offers a more personal and character-driven story.

3. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Diamond is Unbreakable

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is my favorite manga of all time. Since 2012, David Productions has done a consistently excellent job adapting the manga, with highs and lows therein. But come Part 4, when JoJo really becomes JoJo, the studio managed to create one of the best battle shonen adaptations of all time. Creativity, animation, storyboarding is at an all time high here in a way that feels like we were blessed. A solid 39 episodes running constantly had its toll near the ending, but the actual finale episodes are the best JoJo episodes out of the entire series.

4. Gintama°

Gintama. Its always good. It will appear on my list next year. Watch Gintama.

5. The Great Passage (Fune wo Amu)

If you are the type to complain that anime isn't mature enough for you, then you should probably watch this show (and Rakugo.) Hell, you might find a series about making dictionaries with excellent character animation too mundane.

6. Love Live! Sunshine!!

You might be saying that Love Live is up here too high. My response is fuck you.

Aquors > µ's.

7. Space Patrol Luluco

Trigger made a good one! Even though it feels kind of self fellating, it goes far enough with it and enjoys it so much that I like it. It even goes as far as to do an episode about Sex and Violence with Machspeed, the one-off from the Animator Expo. Probably my favorite Trigger show yet.

Also Luluco's mom is hot as fuck. I want her to beat me up and take my money.

8. Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou

This goofy show is about an up and coming DJ who uses his skills at making Katsu-don to be a DJ. Its the kind of anime that has an Adult Swim vibe, but less crude.

9. Please Tell Me, Galko-chan! (Oshiete! Galko-chan)

Anime girls are pretty, pristine, perfect and clean.

Galko says fuck that. This is what I remember High Schoolers actually talking about.

10. HEYBOT!

What is HEYBOT!? The secret best anime of 2016. I put it at the bottom of the list because on the shit list, that makes it the best.

Honorable Mentions -

Thunderbolt Fantasy

Thunderbolt Fantasy
is amazing beyond its puppetry gimmick, which isn't even a gimmick because it adds so much to the show. Amazing voice acting and character movement along with super impressive fight scenes and an actual good use of Sawano soundtrack with Urobochi's knack at character writing all combine into a really fantastic product. That and the classic Hero's Journey and Wuxia influences (plus some of THE BEST badass dialogue one liners ever) really make a product worth watching and nominating, even if we have to bend the rules.

Keijo!!!!!!!! - Keijo!!!!!!!! takes its dumbass sport as seriously as possible and is better for it. People would look at this show and smugly say that anime was a mistake but maybe they should just learn to have fun.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress - There are things to like about this show...I'm having trouble coming up with stuff besides the train conductor girl's rippling muscles, but they are there.

Its certainly Shinkai's best work, for whatever that is worth. Beautiful even by his standards with some actual stellar animation this time. Doesn't stop it from having a gaping plot hole in it.

Honorable Mention - Shin Godzilla

Its directed by Anno and is extremely good. Feels like an honest sequel to Gojira 1954 and a good depiction of how what is essentially a new natural disaster would go down with the bureaucracy.

Best top ten yet.

XBLAnnoyance
Right, as per my tradition for the voting, I shall write out the list in ascending order and fill them out gradually and then flip things near the end of voting. Given the special dispensation my initial alignment is changing.

1. Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū
Here we are, my vote for the best anime program of the foul year of our lord 2016 and it is a well earned award given that this was the most unexpected title but for the second year in a row I knew early that a program I was watching in Winter would take the top honors. Indeed from what I have seen this program is topping a fair few lists which is truly incredible given the context. For those who have not yet watch the series it centers around a semi-obscure Japanese artform called Rakugo which is a verbal performance centered around a conversation which is both comical, complex and quite lengthy and character changes are done with pitch, tone and some head movement. The first episode provides a complete and uninterrupted rendition of rakugo which clocks in at a whopping ten minutes. To further compound matters, rakugo is a craft that has been on the downswing for a number of decades and indeed that is addressed in this season as it serves as a framing device for when Rakugo was the hottest thing around. Indeed this show is also about the people who perform and these are some of the most sophisticated, mature and fully formed characters I have seen in all of the medium. Still, what put this show over the top is that it got me to care about a foreign art that is fairly impenetrable but god damn I felt the passion and the love and it formed a powerful emotional resonance for that alone it is my anime of the year.

2. The Great Passage

I would imagine that this title isn't going to be a whole bunch of lists, though that is owing to the current distribution problems that have arisen for no adequately explored reason to date. Outside of that the plot synopsis isn't exactly bristling with excitement as the program tells the tale of Mitsuya Majime as he ends up working at a publisher and making a new dictionary named after the work of the title. The series attempts to move past the obvious mundanity of the subject matter by getting very and oddly philosophical, not just on the nature of the dictionary but also the nature of life and humanity as well. If there is a flaw with this approach it sometimes oversells its purple prose and that was the key difference between this work and the shot that ended up being my AOTY; The Great Passage connected to me on an intellectual level but I was just not getting stirred up emotionally about the dictionary.

3. Mob Psycho 100

You may have heard of this one given that it is the second ONE adaptation we have seen within the past year and while this adaptation didn't reach the absurd hype heights that One Punch Man did, it has still done pretty well for itself, garnering more mainstream attention then might be expected given how strange the production really is. Yet it was popular enough to earn itself promotion spots for Crunchyroll in TV advertisements and is currently the number one desired program or the Toonami block. It is well earned given that I honestly think this is the superior property as it mixes much more imaginative psychic powers with the most visually brilliant BONES production since Space Dandy.

4. 91 Days
This was a most curious production and not unlike some other entries higher up on the list in that we have a show here that really should exist as an anime title. Indeed, this is the type of show you would be expecting from HBO given that it is a revenge tale involving the mob during Prohabitation era Illinois and yet here we are. Now obviously the standards here are not going to be a high as Boardwalk Empire but within the confines of its own niche it pulls all the whole yarn with surprising effectiveness, some performances aside. Yea, I know some people loved Fango's over the top performance but I was not as enamored.

5. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
Another year, another vote for Jojo in about the same place as always which is a damn shame this year since Part 4 in comparison to the franchise itself is a cut above what has come before in terms of visuals and production, for the most part. Doing 39 episodes in a row clearly stretched David Production past some limits in the later episodes but nothing as bad as Stardust Crusaders comes to mind. In terms of the manga material reflected against other parts this saga once again shines above even the aforementioned Stardust Crusaders given that part was really bound to dull stand user of the week shenanigans at points and indeed shackled to pretty standard Hero Journey quest as well. Diamond is Unbreakable is freed from those constraints as well as free from making every stand user an obstacle for Josuke Higashikata and his core group of friends which in turn gives by far the best supporting cast this series has seen to date. I could go on for quite awhile about what Part 4 did right and indeed some of the things it did wrong but I think this is worth the watch none the less.

6. Thunderbolt Fantasy

Ah yes, this title which is the most contentious of inclusions on to the nomination list given this a mostly live action show featuring puppets not to mention that usually this is most decidedly not anime and is instead an art called Bùdàixì ( pronounced Pe̍h-ōe-jī) or Taiwanese Finger Puppetry which has its own history dating back hundreds of years. It gets by due to the fact that Thunderbolt Fantasy is a international collaboration between Pili International Multimedia from Taiwan and a couple of Japanese firms, chief among them Nitroplus and its famed writer Gen Urobchi which makes pretty anime. Shifting back a little this series is serving as an introduction to the styling of Pili, which I had encountered before this, unfortunately it was in the form of Wulin Warriors. Anyway, this is combined with Gen Urobichi's signature type of speech and dialog which is known for being cerebral and heavy yet it works shockingly effectively here without faling into the pretentious pontifcations of some of his other works.

7. Kiznaiver
If there was any show that on paper was brimming with uncertainty it was certainly Studio Trigger's other contribution to this list given not only their own checkered creation history but this show was being penned by prominent anime scribe Mari Okada, whose work could be charitably described as uneven at best. Indeed, that season she had also contributed to one of the worst shows that aired this year in The Lost Village. Fortunately the program is mostly free of her most annoying traits but I think even a hard wrench could not diffuse her love of triangle dynamics. At any rate, Kiznaiver was also the evolution of a concept from the most cliched of ideas, having the series being a battle shonen where power is shared and having it transmogrify into an examination of emotions being forced onto a group and it works well for the most part. This title would have been higher if the emotional gravitas hadn't drained out three-fourths of the way through but still worth a watch for the reasons listed above and indeed for the OP which was my opening of the year bar none.

8. Alderman on the Sky
This title here is without a doubt the hidden gem of the year above all else as it showed up in the Summer season with little hype and little watcher buzz and seemed from the outset to be totally generic light novel adaptation. Indeed the tale being told is the rise of Ikta Solork as the greatest general in at least a generation and that isn't a spoiler, something that is laid pretty early onward. Anyway, one thing that separates this from the usual fare is he isn't a chessmaster by choice perfecting to live the life of laziness but is instead thrust into the role of officer along with his five man band of friends, with the sound out being the loyal over a fault knight officer Yatorishino Igsem. Also of note is the unique setting in terms of reflecting the real world as this has been compared to Valkyria Chronicles and it has a bit of that sense in the aesthetics, in terms of history this is the late 19th century colonial era with special emphasis on Imperial Russia and the British Empire. Finally, this is a series that is crying out for a sequel given what is lined before our hero in the final episode and I do hope it gets own somehow.

9. Konosuba
I know a fair few also have Konosuba on their lists but I fear this is a title that will be overlooked somewhat given the very generic nature of the initial synopsis. Indeed, the trapped in a MMORPG premise is one that is almost its own genre at this point and that means variance is being introduced into the equation. Not the only series to attempt this feat in the season aired but this was the superior product in my estimation. To put it simply this is the satirical take on the idea that manages to be not only witty and clever but genuinely funny. I will not spoil anything but the first episode alone is a very cunning examination of starting out in an RPG world to cite one example.

10. Space Patrol Luluco
I believe this is the first short series I have voted for the top 10 in my years contemplating these lists and it is well earned given this was something of a turnaround year for Studio Trigger in terms of quality. Also quite remarkable given what was once thought to be a background metajoke about the nature of anime production seasons actually turned out to be the real outline of the Luluco series plan. Even more astonishingly the right call was made in considering what was supposed to be a three season space saga into this amazingly compact micro-series that starts out as another Imashi madcap venture and ends up being a complete celebration of Studio Trigger without falling into pretentiousness.

Series:

1. Haikyuu ; best show this year and the best sports anime I've ever watched. sorry captain tsubasa, slam dunk

2. Mob Psycho 100 ; unique show with great animation

3. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Diamond is Unbreakable ; what a beautiful duwang

4. Gintama° ; best comedy anime

1. Mob Psycho 100
Pretty much every Mob review is going to bring up ONE's other, better known work One Punch Man. In fact I'm doing it right now. Both feature similarly overpowered protagonists and mess around with the conventions of shounen anime & manga. But that's really only a surface level examination as the two really couldn't be more different. While One Punch Man is more of a parody, featuring boisterous talkative villains who get cut down in a single hit for laughs, Mob Psycho is a character focused work about the insecurities of a middle school boy.

Many shounen works love to trot out the "I just want to be normal" line with their protagonists in regards to their totally awesome powers. For me, it almost always rings hollow. It's kind of a paradox because the awesome fight scenes and crazy abilities are what the fans like these shows. It's a huge part of the appeal, so it feels disingenuous for those characters to be like "nah, I don't really need these powers". Mob is one of the few characters in anime that I can believe honestly wants to be normal. Whenever he has a mundane problem, he looks for a mundane solution. The show does an excellent job of characterizing him as an insecure boy with few friends. The kind of person who's so bland and unassuming that people forget they exist. And this show is such a triumph because of the way it blends this story and dialogue with unusually stylized art and fantastic music.

Mob Psycho 100 follows the shounen playbook to a degree, frequently and continually subverts those expectations. In the beginning it's easy to peg each of their characters according to the expected tropes, but even as early as episode 3 or 4 these characters are being humanized and as such their arcs take unexpected turns. It's a show that's full of surprises because each time you think it's finally playing by the book it subverts your expectations. Truly a fantastic show, not just for the season it aired in or for 2016, but in anime as a whole.

2. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
It's no small feat when a show can take a dying, foreign art form I have absolutely no knowledge of or interest in and craft such a compelling show. The show is ostensibly about rakugo, a kind of one man performance theater that was once popular in Japan. The show isn't so much about Rakugo as it is a period character drama. Rakugo is of course ever present as almost all the primary characters are rakugo performers. In a work like this one of the first fundamental hurdles that must be overcome is getting the audience to buy into the subject matter and believe it is as important as the characters act. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju achieves this with stunning ease for me. I think this is due in part to the protagonist Kikuhiko not actually enjoying rakugo for much of his childhood. His apprenticeship was a necessity to obtain food and shelter. His temperament and preferences vary greatly from his master and his fellow pupil Sukeroku, which makes connecting with the art itself all the more difficult for him. So the audience learns with him, and most importantly it happens in a way that feels organic.

For a show that isn't about flashy battles or psychedelic worlds, this show has good to excellent animation. Because rakugo is more than just storytelling, body language is very important and the animation captures subtleties that greatly impact the tone and quality of the performance. Unsurprisingly each episode generally has at least one performance and I think they struck the right balance with how much they show and what they omit. There's the very real danger here of boring the viewer with these long and fairly frequent performances, but thanks to the excellent voicework and animation I found most of them to be legitimately engaging. For people who bemoan the lack of mature anime in the industry, definitely give this a look. And there's a new season coming soon so now's a good time to jump in.

3. Thunderbolt Fantasy
I've seen that this one is contentious in the anime thread due to the whole "it's not really anime" thing, but since it's allowed I'm putting it here. Thunderbolt Fantasy uses puppets. Elaborately dressed wuxia puppets that shoot energy beams and decapitate other puppets. The first episode is pretty action packed and honestly I found these well choreographed and over the top fights to be kind of ridiculous because...well, they're puppets. But by the second episode it had it's hooks in me. And soon I was watching each week and before I knew it I'd bought into these characters and their adventure.

Thunderbolt Fantasy is a wuxia inspired fantasy adventure. The premise is fairly simple: There's a magic sword that's in several pieces and the bad guy wants it so the good guys have to go to his fortress and stop him. A tale as old as time, but much of what makes this show so interesting are the characters and their dynamics. Simply put, most of the party that they put together for this adventure is morally questionable. At least a few outright villainous. So our adventurers all have hidden agendas and secret pasts in this alliance of convenience. Every episode you have to wonder, "When does the sudden but inevitable betrayal happen? And who will it be?" On top of this there's the generally excellent dialogue which does a great job of fleshing out their personalities. Since this is puppetry rather than animation everyone has the aforementioned extremely elaborate clothing which wouldn't be possible in animation due to the high level of detail.

The show was a great surprise and filled a niche I didn't know I'd been yearning for. If I were to liken it to something else, maybe think of it as an asian inspired Lord of the Rings with an untrustworthy group. Frankly it reminds me of some of the D&D campaigns I've played in, but maybe I've just had the (unfortunate) luck to play with a bunch of untrustworthy schemers.
I was one of them.

4. Jojo's Bizzare Adventure- Diamond is Unbreakable
Ah, Jojo. Every part has been pretty strong, though people debate where each season stands comparatively. For the uninitiated, each part of the Jojo series features a different storyline and protagonist from the Joestar family. So while most would recommend starting from the beginnning, each part is self contained and can be watched on it's own. Moving along, part 4 is as strong as anything that came before it, perhaps even better. I've heard people say Persona 4 took some inspiration from this part and I'd believe it. While completely different in terms of plot, characters, etc there's a similar feeling shared by the two and the underlying mystery of a supernatural killer lurking in a small Japanese town.

What sets Diamond is Unbreakable apart for me is the strong ensemble cast. Parts 1 & 2 focused on Jonathan and Joseph Joestar respectively. There were other supporting characters, but the narrative and ultimately agency in the story lay solely with them. Part 3 also had an ensemble cast and introduced stands, but it's villain of the week format and length made it drag at some points. In Part 4 each of the primary characters is more fleshed out and tend to have their own stories which they deal with either on their own or with a subset of friends. Rather than the protagonists being one cohesive unit, it's more like a set of overlapping subgroups. In that way it seems more organic since everyone has very different personalities so anytime something happens the group makeup is different which leads to a lot of variety with how each episode plays out.

I found the first several episodes to be enjoyable, but things became infinitely more interesting once Kira was properly introduced. He makes for a wonderful villain. Once introduced the show makes no effort to hide his nature, instead giving us a game of cat and mouse as the protagonists pursue him and he tries to elude them. Stands are also a huge step up in DIU compared to Stardust Crusaders as now everyone has crazy powers so each fight is extremely inventive. In terms of visuals Jojo's more stylish than ever and there's some great scene transitions that make the whole presentation really slick. Speaking of presentation part 4 continues pulling from the horror genre's bag of tricks to make many of the confrontations especially creepy. There's a few neat fake outs too where David Production uses these tricks to make the viewer doubt the intentions of certain characters.

The best part however is the way the series continues to build as it wears on. Rather than finding myself occasionally bored as I did in part 3, each new episode made me want more. By the time the Bites the Dust arc came around I was utterly enthralled. And while that's probably my favorite part of the series, the ending does justice to everything that came before it and wraps up in an extremely satisfying way.

5. Erased
Erased is one of the few shoes that had me eagerly and impatiently anticipating each new episode. It's partially due to the fact that every episode ended on a GODDAMN CLIFFHANGER, but the show constructed an interesting mystery that was fun to mull over and discuss while watching from week to week. The premise is that the main character Satoru involuntarily rewinds time to before other people's deaths and he uses that chance to save them. However someone dies and he is framed for the murder. Rather than going back a few minutes as usual, finds that he has gone back 18 years to when he was 10. From there he has to discover how seemingly unrelated events in the past led to the present day murder.

The mystery is one of the big draws of the show and it does a great job with interesting revelations all the while using enough misdirection to keep people guessing. The voice work is excellent and helps to turn the setting and characters into a believable world in spite of a supernatural ability being part of the premise. In many ways it's much more subdued, Satoru especially, than most anime which is rife with overacting. The change of pace is appreciated.

Unfortunately the ending doesn't quite stick the landing. While it's not bad, it's nowhere near to quality of the build up. It's not so much disappointing as it is that I had high expectations for it. It's good enough however to sit this high up on my list whereas if the show had actually ended poorly it wouldn't be on my list at all. If a time travel/time loop murder mystery sounds interesting to you then definitely give Erased a shot.

6. Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-
At first it seemed to just be another one of the many "modern otaku transported to a fantasy world" stories, but quickly showed itself to be a bit more interesting than the standard fare. It's another anime that has an interesting take on looping events, one of the strengths of this series is that it shows it's characters from multiple perspectives as Subaru tries a different approach on each loop. And through this they build an interesting world with intricate mechanics that makes it interesting to try and guess how each loop will be resolved. The characters themselves are only slightly above average and utilize a lot of fairly standard anime tropes.

What sets Re:ZERO apart is the much talked about "suffering". Subaru goes through a hell of a lot even in the early loops. Around the middle of the series I kept thinking Subaru had hit his emotional and mental nadir only for things to somehow get worse. At that point I had to start interspersing my viewing with other, cheeier anime to counteract just how depressing it was. Things eventually turn around a bit, at least for a while, but all in all I have to give the show props for eliciting such a strong emotional response from me. My criticisms of the series would be that some points dragged a bit after multiple runs in the same loop. And while it seems to be by design that Subaru is a useless, petty piece of shit who only knows suffering as kind of a knock on the self insert nature of these transported to a fantasy world stories, I can't help but feel it's undermined a bit by the waifu aspect. This isn't merely a case of the audience projecting their own feelings onto the female characters as most of them (at least those Subaru becomes close to) strike the same notes a lot of anime hit with pandering characters, but unlike Subaru it doesn't seem those characteristics have a more sinister purpose. Or maybe they do, but if so that's beyond what was adapted for this anime. In short, tropey, flawed, but engrossing due to its mysteries and how outright cruel the universe is to Subaru.

7. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless
I'm not a huge fan of slice of life, but I generally choose at least one show every season that's a bit lighter so I can relax. For spring that was Tanaka-kun (and Flying Witch). It helps after shows like Re:ZERO drop my heart in a meat grinder.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless is about highschooler Tanaka who will go to amazing lengths to be lazy. It manages to spin this central conceit into 12 relaxing and generally humorous episodes while still staying fresh. I wasn't sold on the first episode simply due to how low energy it was, what with Tanaka being a sloth wearing human skin and Ohta being an enabler. Things quickly turn around as the supporting cast is introduced and they work to counterbalance Tanaka's lethargy with their excitable antics. Once everyone's taken the stage the show becomes a fun romp with endearing characters who play well off each other. The show has a wonderful pastel color pallet which alongside the music make for an entertaining and relaxing show.

The reason Tanaka-kun made my list rather than some of my other choices is because I could watch the characters bounce off each other for dozens of hours. As the ending credits rolled on the last episode I couldn't help but think how much I wished there were 100 episodes of Tanaka. Any time I'm feeling down I'd love to have a new episode of Tanaka to put me at ease and that's something I've felt about very few shows.

8. Yuri On Ice
I'm not normally one for sports anime of any sort, but I gave Yuri On Ice a chance as I've enjoyed most of MAPPA's output and found it to be pretty outstanding. The series opens strongly with its depiction Yuri as an extremely self conscious and depressed ice skater who, after coming in dead last is returning to his home town and family. While everyone in his hometown is proud of him for making it as far as he did, it only hurts Yuri more as he can't help but feel he let everyone down. This setup is different enough from most anime sports anime, which often focus on relative newbies rather than someone with experience facing the end of their career. When Victor appears and decides to be his coach the mood shifts substantially as he helps Yuri get back into the sport and helps him assert himself.

It's an enjoyable ride all the way through with fun characters, sometimes wonderful and intricate animation, and a decent soundtrack. On the downside, outside of Yuri, Victor, and Yurio most of the other characters are underdeveloped. This is fine for some of the supporting cast, but for some of the other competitors, JJ especially, I feel like they missed the mark. While sometimes the show can look great, there was obviously a troubled production as many scenes are lackluster and by the end of the show the repetition in the skaters routines can grow old.

9. KONOSUBA -God's blessing on this wonderful world!
Another one of those "trapped in another world" things that are popular with the kids these days. KONOSUBA is a comedy about a NEET named Kazuma who dies and is transported to a fantasy world. Only he's completely ineffectual and his party members each display varying degrees of uselessness, incompetence, and deviancy. So basically it's just a bunch of assholes making each other miserable and only succeeding by sheer chance or by tormenting their opponents instead of each other. The comedy's generally on point and it's enjoyable all the way through. The animation style is generally pretty loose which can sometimes look ugly in individual frames, but is generally pretty good and expressive in motion.

10. Kiznaiver
Ugly mascot characters kidnap 7 highschool kids who are then experimented on so that they can share each other's pain. With how the show opens I expected it to be about saw esque death traps and forcing the protagonists into difficult choices, but it quickly reveals itself to be about helping strangers make a lasting emotional connection with one another. I'm a big fan of the character designs in this show and in general all the art is top notch. There's plenty of small details in many of the scenes which help to convey the emotions visually. Be aware, this show goes heavy on the melodrama, but I found it pretty compelling. I personally found the series resolution to be a bit iffy. Not really bad, but it didn't have enough gravity compared to everything that came before.

OVAs/Movies
1. The Ancient Magus' Bride- Those Awaiting a Star
A fun short OVA. Doesn't really follow the manga, but does a good job communicating the same senses of wonder and dread. The front half shows Chise's somewhat serene life as the apprentice to an inhuman mage who lives in the English countryside among various fey and other supernatural beings. The other half is her unhappy origins and difficult childhood caused by her ability to see the supernatural. The creatures in this part are excellently and disgustingly animated. It's enjoyable, but due to the short run time very little happens and it ends just as things are getting interesting. If you're the impatient type I'd suggest holding off until more has been released.

Thunderbolt Fantasy

ANIME JA NAI ANIME JA NAI ANIME JA NAI

Puppets are animation! It's written by Urobochi and has a Sawano soundtrack!

OMG I love Legend of the Sacred Stone. I never heard of this. Puppet martial arts is fantastic. Thank you for mentioning this show. I'm going to watch it.

Did I expect a Josei anime about a dying art/entertainment form to be my Anime of the Year when this horrid year began? No, not at all. Rakugo won me over with its drama driven story and performances that were able to enchant anime audiences and myself alike through the show's subtle character animation during performances and fantastic voice work. Even us viewers who can't understand the language were on the edge of our seats, and drawn into the rakugo story being protracted on the stage. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was truley an unexpected gem to appear last year, and will be seen on my list again for 2017 with its currently airing sequel.

2. Mob Psycho 100
IVSi8YP.png

When 2016 rolled around there were two anime adaptions I couldn't wait for, the first being the fourth part of JoJo and the other an adaption of One's better manga Mob Pyscho 100. In most other years MP100 would of won my AOTY, though it was usurped by an unexpected dark horse this doesn't change the fact that Bones job in adapting MP100 was phenomenal. They were able to capture the humor
and action of the manga almost perfectly, not to mention the different tricks and art styles they used throughout the shows run. I can only pray we get another season of the show, just so I can see the most painful and heart-wrenching arc from the manga adapted.

3. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Diamond is Unbreakable
qtqBDmG.png

While I may have some issues with how David Productions decided to adapt certain episodes towards the late middle of the shows run, overall I can't help but be pleased to see Part 4 finally get an anime and one worthy of the 3rd best Jojo Part. There's not much to say, DP used what they learned from the previous seasons and created the best JoJo adaption yet. Maybe having a split course for Part 5 would be for the best since keeping quality up for 39 episodes is hard, these quality issues found during the middle of the shows run were enough for me to put MP100 ahead of JoJo.

Honorable Mentions:
Gintama: Another great season for the series, though it had some bad growing pains with the show getting a new director. Didn't make the list due to most of its episodes where in 2015 and the issues it faced compared to previous seasons of the show.
Flying Witch: Cute anime, but the anime adaption didn't quite have enough to make it on the list.
Kiznaiver: Liked it quite a lot for the first 9 episodes, but sadly the final three really dragged it down for me.

1. Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-
So, hands down this was one of the more enjoyable series I watched in 2016, and likely the only series in 2016 I would preorder if it got released in english. That being said, I play a little anime game with my friends where we look at the new shows and each pick some that we will think will be the best. My wife picked this one and the rest of us looked at her confused. Turns out, despite the generic sounding premise (and fairly generic episode 1, thankfully it aired as a double episode) the show had plenty of interesting things to add to the table. The show isn't without some flaws, including at times making certain characters completely unlikable. But overall was a very entertaining watch from start to finish.

2. Food Wars! The Second Plate
Not much to say here. a good continuation of a good series. Lots of fun food battles. A little rushed, but still a great watch.

3. ReLIFE
with the premise of this one I expected it to be rather awkward and not a very enjoyable show. Instead I got one of the better high school setting shows in years with very little awkwardness at all.
Will add more when I figure out what 2-10 are lol.

4.Assassination Classroom Second Season
This one continues on from the first season and cranks it up a notch. Since the manga finished the anime manages to have a complete ending as well which is a great plus. Just a great watch from start to finish.

5. Mob Psycho 100
Interesting style that will likely rub some people the wrong way but will be made up for with great animation check.
fun crazy psychic adventures with some really cool moments check.
better than one punch man... eh... nope.

6. Yuri on Ice
great animation, fun cast, though you won't be able to help but feel that they named characters yuri just because yaoi on ice was to on the nose :p

7. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
this show starts off a bit slow, but then starts to bring the funny. and it has the best psychic of the year. that being said it also has plenty of gags that miss thus why it's here. If you liked school Rumble (the 3 people that actually know the show lol) I would recommend checking this one out.

8.My Hero Academia
as one of my favorite shonen manga I am currently reading it pains me a bit to put this show this low, especially since it got a well animated adaption, alas... the pacing was soooooooooo slow and it ends just as the series starts hitting its stride :/. It felt like a series that got picked up for 50 episodes and thus they didn't want to go through the manga to fast or else they would catch up... but then only had 13. luckily there is already a second season confirmed and that one will likely sit higher on that year's list. instead I recommend people just read the first bit of manga (like 15) and then watch the final arc of the anime series (the last 3 or 4 eps)

9. Erased
If I based this of merely the first 9 episodes or so it would no doubt be higher. But sadly the finish left plenty to be desired. It's still a good watch but disappointing at the same time.

10. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
so.... speaking of shows that the second half left plenty to be desired. it has some great action scenes in it though so it just makes the cut (unless I finish watching a few other shows from 2016 and they bump it off :p)

Honorable mention
KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!; Really this could swap with kabaneri depending on my mood, but at this moment I feel that kabaneri has the higher highs, and the lower lows, but it's a close fight and kabaneri overall was a bit more enjoyable. Konosuba has some decent moments, but it can also get quite pervy, and the main cast can be very annoying (granted it's kind of the point, but it can get grating) overall still looking forward to the second seasons of both shows.
