I think if Nintendo is serious about the Switch being a big success in Japan, they should call Square Enix right away and offer to fund a 30 million dollar SaGa game.

Nah, obviously they need Switch to fail and to offer a fiver to get the premier SaGa experience.

Nice to see Shovel Knight chart somewhere #1 even if it's just for the holiday sale on the Wii U. Wonder how much it sold there, as a game available mostly via dd. I know the 3DS sales were something like 6k physical at launch.

I think their main mistake this year was not releasing SaGa Scarlet Grace on more platforms. It would have been a huge hit like Japan had never seen before. Maybe even 6 million.

No numbers for PSVR, just mention for limited supply.

Famitsu doesn't include Famicom Mini at annual report but if it did it would be the no.4 system this year at sales.

What they should have done was release Scarlet Grace with two versions - like a Pokemon game. That way, they could sell 10 million copies of the game, because every Vita owner would have bought both versions.

Japanese dedicated video game industry continues to decline. Now at the same level of profit as 1987.
Japan's 80's economy is comin' back, baby!

Famicom Mini (and PSVR) aren't included in those numbers though and there was nothing similar in 2015 that could offset revenue from these.
I was being facetious, Chris.
Although I wouldn't consider Famicom Mini as a dedicated gaming device.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the dedicated device segment of the industry down worldwide?

It's just that people tend to overwhelmingly focus of just PS4/XBO in the West and ignore the Wii, DS and PSP.

the Wii DS and PSP were fads replaced by mobile devices...

You say that as if home consoles haven't been replaced by mobile in Japan.

Home consoles in Japan were a mistake... Wii sales demonstrate that

Well the difference is that in west we have gone back to somewhere between PS2 gen and Wii gen numbers and in japan back to pre PS1 era numbers.

Japanese dedicated gaming industry is slowly dying and soon every one of our favorite Japanese franchise will be Westernized or met the same fate as Wild Arms.

Isn't that what it is though? Not that I think it belongs in this comparison but all the thing does is play video games.
It does only play games but it isn't meant to receive new games.
The whole software ecosystem is missing and that was the big difference between Atari Pong and Atari 2600.
Not really comparable IMO.

Lke I said. I dont think it belongs in the comparison but that doesnt mean it isnt a dedicated gaming system. It 100% is even if its not traditional.

With 2 big weeks remaining Famicom Mini LTD after holidays will be 600-700k.

Since that's already a high number it will be interesting to see how big used market for it will be next year.

let's be optimistic here
the dedicated console market in japan could grow again next year for the first time in a decade

Well the difference is that in west we have gone back to somewhere between PS2 gen and Wii gen numbers and in japan back to pre PS1 era numbers.

That just means Japan is declinibg faster. Next gen in the West Vita won't have a follow up and Switch is replacing both Wii U and 3DS, and most people aren't expecting to do as well as the latter.

Who knows about what will happen after that...

Could?
I think it's guarantee unless something catastrophic happens.

A decade ago the japanese dedicated console market hit the peak, now we are at a 30 years record low.

don't think it's a given
could nintendo switch release and moderate ps4 grow offset 3ds decline and ps3 + wii u being dead?

and to clarify i talk about the overall market including software. not just hardware
software for ps3 and wii u will be abysmal this year

I'm expecting Vita to be down to about 500k-550k this year which will be a fairly significant drop. We're beginning to see the migration of the third parties that have supported the console well (i.e. Senran Kagura PS4-only; Trails of Cold Steel PS4-only).

Also, there's not really any big games left on the horizon for it. Maybe a few in the early months (DanganRonpa/Super Robot Wars/Accel World vs. SAO) but other than that, the latter half of the year has nothing announced. I'm sure there will be a Gundam game here and a One Piece there but we've always had a number of upcoming games that I thought for sure would've been 100k+ sellers and I can't really say the same for 2017.

Still, there's enough to keep it from a complete collapse.
It pretty much ran on Minecraft and nothing else, which if anything shows the power of Minecraft lol. The only other bigger titles that sold rather well on Vita were the two Dragon Quest spinoffs (Builders & Heroes 2), neither of which had any legs. All the supposed "big titles" didn't really do anything for the Vita hardware either from what I can tell.

Well if the Switch sells like 3M, yes it would. The PS3 / Wii U could go to 0 sales, and you'd only be missing less than 400K. So the Switch needs to outsell the 6th year of the 3DS handily, which it should... PS4 hopefully won't decline too much, same with Vita. Thus even 2.5M would technically do the job.

It's not a given, it depend on how well Switch performs.
However if Switch fails the next few years will be very bleak for the japanese dedicated gaming market (Xbone is a non-factor, PS3 is basically dead, WiiU died this year, Vita will continue decline, 3DS is still the leading system but it's 6 years old, PS4 isn't guarantee to get even a moderate growth).
The japanese market is at such low point that a new console that perform as a market leader could lift the market over the past year result.

Impressive numbers for the Famicom Mini!
I think this year should be about the same in terms of HW numbers, not dropping unless the Switch is really awful.
It'll still keep dropping later on anyway, with less and less hardware being there...
