Spanish Video Game Software Sales 2016

The latest issue of the Spanish video game magazine Hobby Consolas features an article about the video game sales in Spain.

They list the 10 best-selling games of 2016 (2015 too) and the flops of the year.

I don't agree with some flops because for example I find Gears of War 4 sold at least decently well considering the low install base of the platform.

They don't cite the source, but it has to be rounded leaked GfK data, it can't be VG Chartz because they don't track Spain.

Also, I would like to point out that I found some inconsistencies in the top 10 because for example a big game like Tom Clancy's The Division is missing from the top 10 and I'm sure it outsold Final Fantasy XV.

What's the usual number for PES in Spain? That's quite low given they have official Barca license and all.

FIFA has some pretty strong legs with even the 2015 version (FIFA 16) in the top 5.

Massive Call of Duty drop.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 was an improvement after years of decline, but it seems that with this year's entry the franchise will hit a new low.

Here some old data, it used to sell over 300,000 per entry.

Sad to see once a giant fallen. PES 2017 is great, shame.

As a spaniard, I'm not proud of this results.

Too much Call of Duty and Fifa in my country -_-".

why is it a shame exactly? I really can't understand this attitude when because games I don't like sells very well.

On a side note, and not judging here how Hobby Consolas makes lists, but why is Dead Rising 4 a flop is it was released only 1 week before?
Also, the list is very '2016' incomplete, as it excludes the last weeks of the year which include 2 full weeks before Christmas and the final week of the year when people are still shopping before Jan 6.

Spanish GAF, where do you usually buy your games? Just out of interest.

I assume Amazon usually, but what about on the street?

I lived in Madrid for a bit a couple years ago and was fortunate to stumble across a CeX on Calle de Hortaleza beside Gran Vía. I browsed in places like GAME, El Corte Inglés and Fnac, but their prices are so extortionate. I suspect It's harder for people living outside the capital to find places to shop for games -- especially second-hand.

Why is Infinite Warfare listed as flop, but not Battlefield 1 which sold like half what IW did and was outsold by Yokai Watch even?

I know it sold less than BOIII but still weird choice to include. :p

Spanish GAF here whom has never lived in Madrid: I used to buy amazon.co.uk. But yeah, I totally agree with you that GAME, El Corte Inglés and FNAC do nothing to promote sales.
I remember my two years living in London with joy as, everything was so cheap and accessible in HMW, CeX even GAME UK was way(!) cheaper than Spanish prices.
Now I'm Begium, and prices are high, but still, much better than Spanish ones

This year La Liga and La Liga second division are totally fake in Pes 2017 except Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. They are Fifa exclusives. It's definitely the reason why sales are so low.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah It's probably because I was new to the country but It felt easier to find value in the UK. However the CeX in Madrid was very good.

I'm glad you had joy in London :)

Mediamarkt is a nice place to buy cheap games. Also FNAC if you are a member (you usually get discounts). For online orders, I always use Amazon.es.

Doesn't Spain really love the Vita? Any info about that?

Like everywhere else but Japan, portables are dead in Spain, replaced with smartphones. I don't even see people with 3DS anymore.

Well deserved.

Fake edit:

I just realized, after typing this, that it's Yokai Watch 1! What the heck??

What's surprising about that? It was released in 2016 in Europe. Yokai Watch 2 hasn't even released here yet.

Speaking for myself, I very rarely buy games on the street, because of the extortionate prices you mentioned, but I occasionally do when I find them on sale, especially Nintendo games which aren't that much cheaper even online. Typicall that means FNAC and Media Markt; Game rarely drops prices on their games, and their second-hand prices are absolutely insane.

It goes to show how much us Spaniards love our games that even with the deranged prices games go for, especially in an economy so depressed as ours, there is still a game industry here at all.

Amazon for launch games and digital for the most part these days.

On previous gen I used to buy a lot from Zavvi. Not anymore.

Retailers are useless with their exorbitant prices. Stay away from them so they see the message. 70€ for a game with the wages we have here is a fucking joke.

I don't know if it has been an exception because Three Wise Men, but today I have seen 3 kids with 2DS or new 3DS playing Tomodachi Life, Yo-kai Watch and Pokemon.

So, not so dead, at least, between kids 4-9 years old.

I assume Spain is much like Portugal where the xbox brand is pretty much inexistant and its all about Playstation?

In fact, arent most non-UK countries in Europe like that?

My 8 year old daughter got today her first own console: a 2DS with Yokai Watch bundle and also Pokemon Sun.
2DS has problably been pretty big today.

The Xbox brand is very visible in terms of retail presence but otherwise yes, it is very irrelevant in people's mindset.

The Xbox brand is almost irrelevant outside US and UK.
The >2x install base is coming from somewhere, and it's not from those two countries.

I don't get cutting it at december 10 instead of waiting for next month issue to make the real list, but it's hobbyconsolas so what could you expect.
