I'm determined to give the game a proper chance and not stop after 6 hours like my first two attempts, might as well wait and see if the switch version materialises at this point though, hopefully they'll alter the UI and menus to make it more playable on the small screen

I preordered this game but never really got into it and am just starting back up. I'm getting crushed by a level 8 Bold Cinicula even though I'm also level 8. My party can't heal and I don't remember why. Do I have to target appendages first or can I just go for the head? Everything is confusing!

Few things

1. Only Irina really has healing skills at that point in the game. Most of your healing will come from responding to soul voices and perfectly timing those quick time circles during combat.
2. Breaking appendages can sometimes stop enemies from using certain arts. If you notice an art is coming from a certain appendage that beats you up (pay close attention to the enemy during combat), then breaking that part may help. Otherwise breaking parts is usually more useful for farming certain materials.
3. Enemies usually get tougher the larger they are. This early in the game you might want to come back in a few levels if you're trying to take on a Cinicula.

I decided to come fight this Cinicula later as suggested. I don't really understand the Soul Voice system yet, but I have gotten better at nailing the prompts when they appear.

I finished chapter 3 earlier but haven't been able to play since then. Excited about getting back into the game though.

After moving house and getting a much larger TV, I just have to ask how on earth do devs get the text size and UI wrong in open-world RPGs?

FFXV, Witcher 3 and this are all guilty of it, surely they must do checking to see how the text scales and reads from certain distances away?

Yeah, I've wondered this as well. One of the reasons I stopped playing FF14.

I played this a ton on Sunday and I'm so in love with it. Just exploring the world and learning the game systems is a pure joy for me. I wish I would have started it sooner. I'm on chapter 4 now and I'm surprised they already sent me to a new continent.

Yeah the exploration is amazing and technically you can go to any continent at chapter 4. Kind of getting that itch to play it again myself.

It's a difficult question to answer, it's a very divisive game.
I don't think a vocal minority makes a game divisive, especially when many of these people don't even know how to play it or what they're playing. "Game isn't what i wanted so it's shit" doesn't mean divisive.

And about people who actually didn't enjoy it, there are many for every game out there.

Only for those who have finished the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWX21K1tgi0

Watch this video. Seriously, it may bump my personal score of the game from 9.5 to a full 10. Also the setting prepared for the next game might actually be even bigger than i thought. Of course there are HUGE spoilers about the game and the ending, but also about Xenogears and Xenosaga, so don't watch it unless you finished them (or at least unless you don't care about playing Xenogears and Xenosaga).

Sorry if already posted (and for the dp)

It's close to the perfect game for me, but maybe my enthusiasm will dampen with time. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles as well. I'm really interested to see what Monolith does on the Switch.

What do you guys think about the fact that Monolith's next game is Xenoblade 2 instead of X2? I'm personally a bit disappointed because I was hoping for X2... Don't get me wrong, I like Xenoblade, and I'm excited for Xenoblade 2, but still, it seems we don't get to know more about Mira's secrets for quite a while. That is, if X2 is ever going to exist; its likelihood has just dropped significantly today...

I liked XCX a lot more than XC. That being said, I still believe XC2 will be a terrific game. I wouldn't mind if the next XCX is more lite-MMO qualities. It already has some nice online elements and could be fleshed out further in a sequel.

I'm interested in Xenoblade anything really, but I'm not crazy about the art style in XC2 compared to XCX. I wouldn't let that stop me from getting the game however. I want to see a little more of the game though. I'm still continuously amazed at what Monolith Soft was able to do on the Wii U and I didn't get the sense from what I saw last night that XC2 was a huge step up graphically like XCX was.

They could do alternating series I'm hoping

I'm kind of hoping they branch out instead; especially if the battle system and central gameplay loop remain so similar between a hypothetical parallel mainline and X series. The games are great, but I don't think they can justify two separate ongoing Xenoblade series without milking the formula dry - I'm not even sure I'd be too interested in a Xenoblade 3 at the moment. I'd much rather Monolith moved onto something new - with the two series idea, the allure of more Xenoblade will fade unless they do something drastic to differentiate them. Maybe having an X successor be an actual MMO could work.

I love both games but I'm very lukewarm towards XB2, it seems too safe for me. I loved that X was such ballsy and weird game, it's part of what makes the game so unique and special. I really hope we can another game in the X universe that expands the lore. Also I prefer monolith softs sci-fi settings more. I'm sure XB2 will be good but right now I'm expecting a been there done that feel instead a totally fresh experience like I got with XBC and XCX.

I'd actually love if they use XC as the "safe" JRPG series going forward and XCX as the more experimental series with different battle systems and gameplay and such.

I'm fine with it. Just disappointed at the apparent age of the main character.

I'd prefer it if nothing they did was "safe".

I don't know... XC2 kinda feels like the definition of "safe". :p We heard you didn't like our last game so here, have some rolling green fantasy fields, monster classes from the first game, a red laser sword, and a key reveal image that invokes memories of the first. Oh and the old composers are back and it's a numerical entry without the "Cross"/X subtitle to make it easier for you to claim our last game was just a spin-off. And judging by people's reactions, it seems like it's working heh. Well if that's what it takes to give Monolith Soft room to experiment without having to wade through all the hyperbole then so be it.

With you on the protag's age though. Here's to hoping that he's actually an intelligent, reasonable, and observant character vs the usual idiot hero trope. Though considering the game supposedly has a bathing scene with associated tropey dialogue... I'm going to keep my expectations low haha.

I just posted this in the Xenoblade 2 announcement thread and figured I should post it here too:

I found these quotes about Xenoblade X from December 2015 while looking for Takahashi's comments on Monolith Soft's upcoming project:
It seemed as though this project was announced by Iwata as a completely new game series, so why did you retroactively make this part of the Xenoblade line?
Tetsuya Takahashi: So as it turns out, the idea of it being part of “Xeno” was always there. I have to clarify a little bit because not in the sense that it’s a sequel to the previous game but rather it is a new series that is still “Xeno”. That's how I was thinking of it.

Does Xenoblade Chronicles X have the same level of connection to Xenoblade Chronicles as say between a Xenogears and a Xenosaga?

Takahashi: It's maybe even a little more loosely connected than that, but yes there are a few links that you might be able to pick up on.

Nothing really surprising here, but Takahashi does consider Xenoblade and Xenoblade X to be separate "Xeno" series. So I guess it's possible for the team to make a Xenoblade X sequel later on if they want to continue the story in that series.

Is this not just retconning though? I mean Mira is supposed to be the home planet of the Nopon right?

Even if they're considered different sub-series, I think they can still be connected to each other..

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Xenoblade 2 ends up building on some of the connections between Xenoblade and Xenoblade X that are teased in Xenoblade X.

The thing that really seals it is the
"Hom Homs"
line in Chapter 12. There's no reason for them to include that and draw so much attention to it if they didn't want to make that connection.

Finally decided to get back into this. Took a break some time ago and could never find the time to really focus on the game. I think I was about to start chapter 9 as I needed to finish the Spy Games affinity mission. Hoping I can do that this week and finally make progress to finishing the game's story before the Zelda comes out.

When do you decide to do normal and basic missions? I've been doing a few here and there, and then doing affinity missions to build up the party, but mostly plugging away at the story missions.

When you upgrade AMs, it seems like they just offer higher level gear. I'm only level 18 (26 hours into the game!) so I can't even use the level 20 stuff, so right now it just seems like a waste of Miranium unless I'm missing something.

Is there any in-game way to find rare items, or is just completely by chance? I'm trying not to use the Internet but the game will tell me to gather two widgets, found in Primordia. Primordia is a big place!

Your miranium gets wasted anyway if you don't dump it the second you hit max storage. You'll regret not doing it later, trust me.

Besides, upgrading arms manufacturers also upgrades the stats and bonuses on enemy weapon drops. It's worth the effort even if you never buy anything from the shops again.

EDIT: Never ever accept a gathering mission unless you have the materials already in your inventory. The game will tell you on the mission selection menu how close you are to completing quest.

I love this game, but yeah, gathering missions are the worst.

Thanks for the tip on gathering missions. I'll be sure to hold off on those from now on. The one mission that I do have that became a gathering mission is called the Proper Chopper or something like that, and I have no idea where to get the items for it other than the specific continent so that's going to stay unfinished until I randomly come across the items I guess.

I let this game get away from me for months, but back at it again...

So last night I finished chapter
.6.
and before saving and going to bed, I got a message inviting me to come get my skell license.

Excited now to get home and play again.

Just a heads up the first skell is kind of shitty but once you reach level 30 you get to buy level 30 frames and the real skell game begins to start at that point, have fun.

It just hit me last night how slow the leveling is in this game. I have close to 30 hours and I'm about to hit level 19. If I sat down and just started grinding through basic missions I might level faster I suppose.

At some point I'm going to start running through everything that gets me new clothes. Fashion gear is an addiction.

Once you get skells you can level grind very fast once you find the right places. Items and affinity are the main grind of XCX imo.

Here are the maps for collectible locations. Just fast travel to a location within the target area and run circles/fast travel to reset. If it's an enemy drop material, buy it with reward tickets.

Also, pick the
blue
wire.

Oh and don't burn yourself out doing basic missions from the board! Just do a couple here and there or ones with rewards you want. Only exception are 4 (IIRC) basic missions that get you new characters:
Backup Request (two of these), Marry Me, and Guinea Pigs Wanted

I picked up the hardcover strategy guide on a buy 1 get 1 free deal at a local gaming store. It's big and comprehensive, but one thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't tell you where to start the affinity missions, even though there's a walkthrough of each of them.

Thanks. Another annoying thing are the certification missions. How does finding squashes or defeating lv. 11 bugs help you pilot a skell??

I think they meant to test the player on the various division jobs. I would guess the BLADE higher ups only want the most well rounded and skilled members to pilot skells. At least that was my interpretation of it.

I went and blindly accepted a bunch of basic missions last week and just looked through to see they are almost all gathering, so I'll be using that guide I guess.

Has there been conformation that X will come to switch? Monolith is working on Xenoblade 2 so I don't think they would use resources on a port.

The articles I looked up mention another studio may do the port? X was gonna be one of the bigger motivations to get the switch for me.

even with the rumor it was always clear that MLS would not handle the port themselves (just like they had nothing to do with Xenoblade 3D).

as of now, Xenoblade X is and stays a Wii U game.

A new wave of normal missions is added with every story chapter. In many respects, the real meat of the game and most of its world-building take place in the normal missions. Do them at your own pace though. Just do basic missions whenever you see one that gives you a piece of clothing that you want.

Now, when you upgrade an arms manufacturer, you generally can get two possible benefits: either that manufacturer expands their range of equipment, or they increase the rarity and number of skills for all store-bought equipment from that manufacturer. It actually doesn't have any effect on the level of offered gear. You can buy level 55 gear right from the start. The improved selection is usually of the form of new medium and heavy types of armor, and sometimes new weapon options. You can use the new armor starting at level 15, but when it is added it becomes available for every level in the shop up to level 55.

I'm digging this mash-up of ThemeX and The Way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdAnDE308xI

Also, if we're lucky, Xenoblade Chronicles X-2 will get announced in 2019. Funny thing is that, at the Sawano discord, we were discussing how if the next Monolith Soft game were X-2, it would be almost impossible for Sawano to work on it, because his schedule is crazy from the end of 2016 to May 2017 with the live concerts and a whopping 4 anime/drama shows he's involved in that begin airing by April 2017.

We speculated that if Sawano were to work on X-2, its release would have to be probably late 2018, or 2019, unless others helped out, or he just didn't work on it (which would be really disappointing).

Well, now that Xenoblade 2 might be out and done this year, X-2 could potentially happen around 2019/2020 on Switch. They've got an engine ready to use and Sawano, at the moment, doesn't have anything announced that far ahead except for Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress 2, in 2018.

Good information, thank you. I found the weapons and armor upgrades to be a bit lackluster when I hit level 20. Many of them weren't any better than the level 10 stuff. Seems like Melee Attack Plus and Ranged Attack Plus rule the day.

Well, I defeated
Almandal
the Chapter 7
boss
using my first free skell, while hitting lv. 30 at the same time. Now comes the time to consider buying my first lv. 30 skell.

What should I know when choosing?
Any recommendations?
