followed closely by Dark Souls

Can't see how it would be anything else then Portal 2. I mean when I look at the rest of the list it's......oh wait, there's The Witcher 2......dammit.

Damn, what a stacked year 2011 was. I kept going through the list like "yup, that's it" only to see the next big release and go "wait, nevermind".

Skyward Sword probably. Followed by Dead Space 2, Deus Ex, Portal 2, and Arkham City. (I didn't play DS until 2012, so I'm not counting it).

EDIT: Holy hell Witcher 2 was 2011 as well? Jesus christ what a year.

I didn't play much that year but I did play the hell out of Modern Warfare 3, despite it being my least favorite one next to Ghosts. I sunk dozens if not hundreds of hours into MW3, so I guess that was the best game for me that year?

Deus Ex Human Revolution, big time.

Aside from that, Uncharted 3 is probably next (didn't play until 2013-ish).

Damn this is a tough one.

Probably Gears 3 followed by Bastion, Dead Space 2, Human Revolution and (despite its many faults) Skyrim.

I'd probably go with Catherine for a first choice. I loved the characters, story, and general tone it had. I think the core gameplay is very fun and addicting too. It was really great to see the Persona team experimenting.

Beyond that, I'd say my other favorites are Batman: Arkham City, Ghost Trick, and probably Dark Souls. I had fun with Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Gears 3 too. Pretty nice year.

While well-written it was a regression from the more freeform gameplay of the first Portal.

I'd say Dark Souls is the pick for this year.

Most years, I'd have trouble picking just one game without any hesitation. But not 2011. It's Dark Souls. There are no contenders, nothing else worth mentioning by comparison, even though it was a fine year for games.

One of my favourite game ever, Catherine, with runner-ups being things like Atelier Totori, To the Moon, and Ghost Trick.

2011 was sandwiched between what I think are much better years, but it had its fair share of good releases.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, it is my favourite Zelda. However, it's particularly close this year, because Sonic Generations (360) is my favourite Sonic game as well, and one awesome game. Not to mention that there also is the magnificient Super Mario 3D Land, which would have been my game of the year in many other years as well.

Kind of a weak year, but I'll prolly go with 3d land. Not counting hd ports. Or dark souls, I didn't get into it until a year or two later.

It's hard to choose between Skyrim and Dark Souls. I sunk so many hours into Skyrim but Dark Souls also impressed me with just how replayable it is. Taking different routes and doing different things as you learn more about the world layout. Each playthrough was completely different.

Shout outs to Portal 2, Batman: Arkham City, and Gears 3 as well.

I am really enjoying these series, thanks OP! This one has been the easiest for me because of Dark souls. Mass effect 2 is a decent contender but not up to that level. Witcher 2 is also one of my favorites but I played the x360 version, so it does not count :)

Skyrim changed my gaming life forever. yeah not a perfect game by any means but it really changed my notions of what's possible in a game. i kinda hate to rank it over Dark Souls but Skyrim really felt like a once in a lifetime event

I think Skyrim was my favorite at the time, then probably Arkham City became my favorite, and now I think I'd say Uncharted 3.

Far and away for me is Modern Warfare 3, one of my top 3 games of all time. If I was picking a 2nd and 3rd, I'd say Battlefield 3 and then Forza 4.

Holy crap this year!!!! At the time I was a virtual tie with Arkham City and Zelda SS, gave it to SS only cause I love the Zelda formula so much. But in retrospect I have grown to respect Dark Souls that much more, so that would probably be my pick now for the best game of that year.

But man everything is amazing. Skyrim! Portal 2! LBP2! SM3DL! Dead Space 2! Xenoblade! Deus Ex HR! Are you kidding me?!

This is a really tough one but I think Dark Souls just narrowly edges out The Witcher 2. Dark Souls was such an incredible game and still my favorite of the souls series, assuming you don't count Bloodborne. Everything from the level design, the atmosphere, the enemy design both visually and mechanically. It's just fantastic. Even if some of the later bits aren't as good.

The Wicher 2: Assassin of Kings

I like it as much as the third game. Played both questlines back to back. Full combat rebalance mod is fantastic. Shame there was never a release for Witcher 3.
