After 3 battles i'm like

I don't remember Vesperia and Xilia 1 and 2 having this much mechanics(haven't played the last one)

Heh, it's been there since Graces, though for some reason Xillia built on the old version of the system. Zestiria did a poor rendition of Graces' system, and now (from the hour or so I have played with it) Berseria seems to have a nice albeit chaotic rendition that does not rely on a gimmick like Zestiria did. You should just mash through the first few battles, try to make sense of the different button actions, and slowly (for me after about 30 minutes, but I have played Zestiria and Graces before) the chaos becomes clearer and you can do deliberate actions and manage your battle orbs better. It's a learning process for sure.

Kind of felt that way with the very little I played of Zestiria(most recent one). Not sure if the battle camera changed in Berseria, but kind of hated the behind the back perspective as my character was pretty much obscuring the action making any advanced action like dodging, countering, and reaction timing nearly impossible to suss out. Add in the AI filling the screen with all sorts of animations and their own flashy effects and I felt like I was nearly blind trying to play the game. Likely just needed time to condition to the chaos, but never had that issue in older 'side-perspective' Tales games.

The camera is completely free now: you rotate it manually. In my experience, it has made the camera issues a lot less common (I had no trouble with it, and I sought out several fights in cramped spaces), so they definitely seem to have improved there.

So the battle system is back to before Zesty right? By that I mean an actual party not just 2 people and some damn elemental add ons and shit.

So I played the demo to completion. Spent a long time just running around from area to area in order to refresh enemies to get a feel for battle in the game and... it's certainly a lot to take in. If you just leave the CPU allies to do their own thing the fights can be over so fast it doesn't feel like you as the player have to do anything at all. Plus it's hard to concentrate on doing your own shit well when the spells and animations are flying off everywhere from your teammates.

That said, I did feel like I got way better at it within 20-30minutes of starting, and I was setting everyone else to just do nothing (hold R3 and press L2) so I could kill everything myself.

I think it feels great, certainly much better than Zestiria (which I ended up quitting on) and the skits are hugely improved with the way they play out. Feels way more dynamic with the way they have multiple "cuts" to different characters talking and emoting instead of the static "let's all stand in a line and talk one after the other" of the previous games.

One thing I'm iffy on, and this may just be because I didnt understand it fully, but... to get more Souls for your soul gauge you basically have to rely on luck? You need a stun, which seems random, or you need to hope none of your teammates takes the last hit on your enemy. I guess you can also inflict status but those also seem like they're just a chance to proc on artes.

Nevertheless I'm now interested in the game, where previously I had sort of written Tales off entirely after trying to get in on the games multiple times and as the latest one, Zestiria was bad.

Yes, four unique characters who don't do fusion, and a lot less focus on elemental attributes. The game has a good deal more visual effects on the screen than Graces and Zestiria had, so it is a bit more chaotic than Graces was.

Combat feels like an absolute clusterfuck. Manageable somewhat but jesus its just mayhem of 20 different things happening at once at times.

Im definitely feeling a bit warmer to it than i was for Zesteria but not a day 1 priority for me atm.

You can dodge by using step to gain souls. If I remember correct, you have to counter enemies's attack to stun them

Lmao this 1st skit in Scenario Mode...

I really like the skits, they are much more dynamic and are more entertaining for me as a result. All the while, they retain the quirkiness that made them good in the first place, so they nailed them imo.

I have relatively little experience with the Tales games—do I need to have played any others to understand Berseria? And what's the word on this one? Supposed to be good? I'm definitely interested in the demo.

No prior knowledge is necessary. According to the posters in the import thread (it's been out in Japan since August), this game is one of the best games in the series (some even putting it on par with or above Vesperia, generally seen as the best one). The combat is very action-oriented: Berseria is the most fast-paced game in the series, so if you are a fan of fast-paced combat that focuses on combos and agility in dodging, you might just enjoy this game.

Combat seems confusing but easy. I feel like I'm just button mashing to win every battle. I also don't like how you can't see your different weapons on the field. The one guy has a large sword on his back but uses daggers?? Graphics seem on par with Zestiria and Xilla which isn't saying much. The ground textures still look straight out of PS2 game. Maybe FFXV has spoiled me.

At Least battles have fixed transitions which makes the camera better. It's also nice to have 60 fps out of the box. I'm assuming this will not have any Pro enhancements?

This game's casts is one of the best in the series imo. So many great skit in the full game. And boys, this game has a looooooot of skits

The demo is very easy. You're way over level everything there. Also, the guy using daggers has his own story related reason.

I think in the past people had the idea that there were two teams working on Tales games that would switch off every installment, and each team had their own battle system style (so Graces f was one team, Vesperia/Xillia was another). But I don't know if that's been debunked or was once true but no longer is or whatever. Anyways, I think the Tales series has switched between the CC system and the EP system a couple of times.

That's Project Diva Future Tone, which is an entirely different beast from Diva X. Here's the OT.

Back to Berseria, looking forward to seeing the Steam demo impressions. Zestiria was apparently quite decent so I'm not particularly worried, but PC ports have been kind of garbage lately so I need that extra reassurance. Though maybe it doesn't matter, I still haven't played Zestiria yet and I haven't yet let go of the idea that I need to play it before Berseria, so...

Yeah, I'm buying this for sure. I like what I'm playing.

Velvet is pure waifu material. Just wow. This is waifu material right here.

And Laphicet.... just.... ".... WHEN I'M DWELLING INSIDE OF HER". HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!

Hmm...Played the Steam demo.

-No 21:9 support. :( Otherwise ran fine with everything maxed for me.

-Battle system, even with the tutorials was confusing af. I suppose it makes a lot more sense through progression and not just jumping in with a high-level party with tutorial blurbs that give no context for skill use. Mashing out crazy animations got me through both bosses, but not a very fulfilling way to introduce players.

-Swapping benchwarmers on the fly is a fantastic addition. Not really new for the series, but having them tag in mid combo is a good addition.

Cool, thanks. I had read a bit about it and heard generally good things, but not a ton of specifics.

So this demo did nothing for me. Never played a Tales game and the combat just isn't clicking. Guess it's a good thing since this month is packed for releases already for me.

To be honest, I was the same way when I came to Tales for the first time. But I stuck with it for an hour or two (this was back in the Tales of Vesperia days) and it "clicked" and was great from that point on.

I don't want to apologize for a game that I have no responsibility for but I will say that the systems at work in most Tales games are deep enough that they require some practice and immersion before the fun kicks in. For me, it's a worthwhile time investment but I can totally understand why someone else would feel differently.

I will also close with the fact that Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Graces are two of my favorite action J-RPG's and I enjoyed them both greatly once I got in to the groove of the combat.

Steam demo seems like its having issues, cant force the resolution to stay, loud annoying sound during battle, the skit didnt show the still images all the way.

it crashes every time I try to change the settings...and the menu part where she's walking towards the camera lags horribly...hear the footsteps for a long time before you even see her walking

Those are my 2 favorites as well, at least in terms of combat. I've yet to try the demo, but really hoping Berseria does a better job of it than Xillia/Zestiria.

In that sense its working, but the game is supposed to have PS button icons.

It isn't "supposed to have ps4 button icons" unless the developer specifically puts them in to the PC version. That stuff doesn't come from Steam.

Maybe they'll add them if people ask nicely.

if anyone on PC has issues with the game crashing while changing settings...disable MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner

you can then change the settings and exit the game...re-enable everything and it should work fine

Oh shit it's out. Time to try this out on steam.

Edit: and I can't get a stable 60 even on medium. Time to commit sudoku.
