Microsoft Studios (& Partners) Current and Future Landscape

Not more cancellations. To be fair, its not like they have a heck of a lot of other projects that would be in danger of that now. CD3 is definitely coming out, like I said. Its all just stuff that further disenfranchises me.

What 3rd parties are producing SP titles en masse? Sony relying on MP experiences via 3rd parties makes sound strategic sense - 3rd parties are investing in that direction because its making a boatload of money, Sony is staying out of their way because competing makes no sense, particularly in the months those 3rd parties like to operate in.

All of MS' 3rd party AAA offerings focusing on SP experiences have flopped financially this gen thus far, so theres really no reason to believe MS is going to continue to pursue those deals if they aren't seeing returns on them. The real question within the Xbox division becomes - why fund those branches of content in the games we are making when thats not why people are playing our 1st party games? Don't be surprised if you start hearing of scaling back of SP campaign features in Halo or Gears going forward, or rolling them as MP campaigns.

Buddy, I think you already leaked it.

On which situation? There's no situation, that's the state of Microsoft Game Studios right now. They've dramatically scaled back their first-party output. That's it.

I was referring to the Scalebound situation, which people are hinting at not being very rosy, to say the least.

Well, good news, a lot of games are coming that look promising, Xbox is releasing the most powerful console at the end of the year, Nintendo is placing their bets again with a cool looking hybrid, overall, it should be a great year for gaming.

Now is not the time for Ms to invest in diverse new ip. 2 or 3 years ago was the time. They could start tomorrow and by the time the games are ready... We don't even know. It's a long time and lots of things can happen.

While I agree the time for them to be investing in new IP was before Xbox one was revealed. They should be constantly trying, and at least trying to curate a great library without franchise games.

From the sounds of what is going on I'm not with this direction and the new this gen that I supported every single time day 1 have got nothing. I'm really sorry that they messed up this gen and didn't understand why all their games are selling bad. It's usually something that accompanies messing up and cultivating a userbase off of fire sales.

Shucks I wonder why these games would do poorly. Instead of sticking by the stuff they created early this gen they are now abandoning it to pursue profit strategies for games because 1st parties like to pursue the things 3rd party pubs are already providing. My hype for their e3 conference has declined and at e3 I'll be making a big decision as to where I go. P.S I've never owned a Playstation console but that may change. All that Phil Spencer pr this gen nothing but a bunch of sweet nothings.

I'm quite curious regarding one aspect of MS Studios.

Aka the "mothership staff" of MS Studios. Joe Staten, Casey Hudson. The ones who are the select group of people who are creatively overseeing and influencing every other MS Studios project. We've had Joe Staten write for ReCore, etc etc. I would assume they leave their fingerprints all over MS Studios staff to consult, etc.

How significant are they involved with the games development really? Do they visit 343i, Black Tusk, etc every month to review their creative output, etc? Or lend their support/work in areas where the devs are lacking themselves?

If they really wanted to start picking up immediate support and diversity right now they would drop the vaguely ridiculous ID@XBOX requirements and fulfill the original promise of "every Xbox is a devkit" by letting anyone put games on the Xbox store via UWA.

Yes it would mean they would need to pay someone to stop people sticking obvious stolen games on there.
Yes it would mean all of the XBLIG games they obviously felt embarrassed about like "How loud can your Avatar fart?" would show up there.

But it would get developer support, developer support that is otherwise never looking that direction. Obviously this would not suit the "I hate that Steam has lots of games" crowd, but it would give the Xbox an identity of its own beyond the console thats not quite as good as the other identical console but is slightly cheaper.

Good idea. But do they really want to? I don't know.

If the pre-E3 Scorpio conference doesn't show some dramatic improvement in Microsoft's 1st/2nd-party lineup, I will say "I backed the wrong fucking horse".

I'm still an Xbox fan but the other side (PS4) is getting tons of de facto Japanese 3rd party exclusives and has a huge stable of 1st party exclusives.

I say that I'm an Xbox fan and love Xbox games but little by little Microsoft is removing the things I love about them. Splosion Man and Ms. Splosion Man were two of the best top notch games of last gen. The developer (Twisted Pixel) is no longer a 1st-party dev. Alan Wake was one of the best games of last gen and Quantum Break was one of the best games of this gen. The developer (Remedy) is no longer a 2nd-party dev. Press Play made Max Curse Of Brotherhood and Kalimba (both really good puzzle games). They're closed down. I never played the Fable games but the Fable dev is also closed. I mean what the fuck?

Scalebound was being touted as one of the big exclusives for 2 years, and that's cancelled? Even if Microsoft was justified in cancelling the game (i.e. Platinum was incompetent) it still looks bad and shows they don't have a good eye for talent.

Where is Sunset Overdrive 2? Where is D4 Season 2?

When will 343 or The Coalition ever make a new IP (like Naughty Dog does)?

I mean damn, I need some good news here. Somebody leak something good please.
same here, last E3 was crap and no gamescon just made it worse. I gave them the benefit of the doubt thinking that they are waiting to push Scorpio with a many new games like if it was a new generation but Scalebound was the only MS game I cared about and I still don't forgive them for Lionhead and canceling the Obsidian RPG.
If there are not, at least 2 new AAA IPs with full in-game demos for E3 with significant single player focus, I'm just giving up MS studios. By the meantime, I'm just not buying Scorpio, I'd rather buy a Pro.

Don't think anyone can answer any of that though for some reason I keep thinking Joe was helping with Scalebound? Fuck knows what Casey Hudson is up too.....

Microsoft is in a very weird place right now. By all accounts, Scorpio will be very good hardware, but they aren't doing much to justify it. Sony is killing them on third party console exclusives and marketing deals and that's to say nothing of the internally-developed lineup they have coming in 2017 and 2018.

On top of that, Scalebound just got canned and third party AAA partners have been burned commercially when they've partnered with Xbox this generation. A healthy Xbox is good for games, but the roadmap for the next few years doesn't inspire confidence.

If you do that then you don't need a team of high paid executives telling people what is and isn't a "good fit" for the brand, you let the people buying into that brand make that decision instead.

therefore its never happening.

I know an easy fix, fit their cooperate goal too. Full feature Windows 10 on Xbox.
Full PC library, all the emulator with Nintendo, Sega, Sony full retro best BC of the world.
Just make Xbox a custom Windows 10 hardware already.

Scorpio reveal will be at E3.......I have a feeling microsoft doesn't want to/really can't do it as a separate event. They literally would have nothing to show other then a Dev video saying its amazing to develop for and awesome to work with.

I mean if Forza, state of decay, crackdown and sea of thieves are all they really have for big games then no doubt most of E3 will include the Scorpio reveal itself. They don't have the 3rd party relations like they used too, god this is brutal........I really hope they turn it around. Sony being alone on top is just bad.......we all remember when sony was the lone giant last time.

Also they CANNOT show just CGI shit......especially when Sony even had good slices last year.

Competition pushes everybody for a better product......

One thing I straight up don't get is Microsoft's strategy. Like, I can accept that they want to move more towards a service model and they want to start locking players in their eco systems but...where's the content to do that? If I'm someone that hasn't hopped aboard the Xbox bandwagon, what's exactly there to entice me? Gears, Halo, and Forza? If those didn't interest before then they sure wouldn't interest me now. Sure maybe titles like Scalebound and Phantom Dust wouldn't have set the world on fire but they're the types of titles you need to diversify your lineup. This is a lesson Sony learned way back in the PS1 days and they still continue to strive for the most diverse lineup possible by funding titles like Gravity Rush 2. It feels like MS wants the dominance but they don't want to put in the work to stay there.

I'd point you to the "I want a console interface, I want it hooked up to my TV and I don't want to spend more than $400" crowd, but there's literally hundreds of threads about Pc vs console that will tell you you are wrong to say this.

MS want to cut the budget and kill all these games but want to spend $100's of millions on developing a new console?? Something smells rotten.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them announce Rare's other new IP at E3, even though it could be a 2019 or even 2020 game. Sneakers and Shinobi make it sound like there won't be any surprises at E3 and just more of the usual suspects (Halo, Forza). If they go a second straight E3 without announcing any new IP's that would be a bad look, and the opposite of what Phil promised would happen

Edit: my release year prediction is complete speculation. Who knows how far along it is

The people that really want that stuff have gaming PCs. If you don't then those things are not that important to you. Show me topic with people asking for all the mentioned to be available in a console. I would also love to see how Microsoft would promote their closed box playing emulated Nintendo and Sony games...

E3 needs to come through with that message even though we have new h/w.

To me...with everything that MS is doing right now (with games) is weathering the storm of not having new successful IP and focusing on certain things.

Xbox One: Get platform features out that the competition has no answer for (right now)
Windows Store (games): Get platform features out that you have on Xbox, start throwing games on there (hope they stick)
Scorpio: Make a powerful console for great looking games.

It's all about platform features, having a powerful device, and introducing games that highlight those features in use.

Sea of Thieves - Looking for Group, look for pirate friends on an easy way that share the same way of how to game than you. Keeps you looking for people on the xbox platform. Groups, communicating with your pirate buddies, that you found with LFG, getting relationships on the xbox platform. Beam Broadcast to show your adventure to other folks, getting them to watch something on the xbox platform. We don't know anything about microtransactions/DLC but we can make an educated guess on it happening.

Crackdown 3 - THE CLOUD. Potentially doing something that is going to be very hard for another platform holder to replicate. Multiplayer only feature, guess what you'll use (not saying you specifically but people)...LFG, Groups, Beam.

Killer Instinct - Arena! Competition, Beam, Tournaments.

Windows 10 (PC) - Get "all" the same stuff you have on your Xbox...on your PC, all consolidated to you in an easy to use platform (at least that's what they are building it out to be...not what it is now).

Obviously MS wants people to use the Windows Store (which they do by default on Xbox...digital sales) but as a Xbox brand...this is what they are doing. Not saying that they aren't gonna keep making games, but they are truly trying to build a platform and rival the likes of Steam but from the Xbox side nicely, and half-assed on the Windows side.

MS future landscape for the short term, the way that I see it is to sell you on these features, throw in some exclusives that you'll play and hopefully get you so acclimated to their system that they are trying to build out, that you see anything else as less than. Look at how people viewed Xbox Live vs. PSN in the 360 days...they are trying to recreate that. Like Gamerscore, but on 100. A new hook but it's at the platform level.

It sucks for people like me who want new games but don't necessarily want it to appease the platform, even if I totally understand why they do it. That is what I view their strategy is...platform features on different devices that are highlighted through the games that they make and supported by 3rd parties easily.

Honestly, unless they've significantly stepped up their first party without even hinting at it (unlikely), I'm expecting a pretty dismal e3 in terms of games. Just the old reliables and indies. With PS4 selling the way it is and the repeated mismanagement of 3rd party efforts, I don't see them pulling any shiny new 3rd party efforts out of their hat.

Still, never say die I guess.

I'm... discussing the topic? What kind of question is this?

Eh, forget it. Just kinda surprised to see you interested in the topic given some other posts of yours I've seen.

Are you actually suggesting people wouldn't buy the original vision of a DirectX Box?

As in a console designed to work like a console as in completely controlled via controller and hooked up to a TV and with a fixed hardware profile, but that plays all games ever released on windows with a controller?

That's a thing nobody wants?

If this is such a no-brainer then why isn't already on the market? First of all Microsoft is not going to release console with a Steam app competing with their own store and it just goes downhill from there. It's a pipe dream.

Lol. I'd be stunned if they did.

I was thinking maybe as a desperation move to show that they have more than just the same few franchises coming, but guess not. Just showing up with Halo and Forza (and Ori 2 I guess) wouldn't be promising for people who aren't already locked into the Xbox ecosystem. Although casuals probably won't care

Because the Xbox team immediately veered off into their own thing and moved further and further from their original purpose while treating Windows gamers as competition, not people ultimately footing their bill.

Which is why we are where we are at now.
MS are a non-presence on the PC, the franchises they have that they want to lure PC gamers with hold no particular value because they were held away from Pc gamers for so long, and the Windows division that has been subsidising those efforts wants to see results.

If Xbox had been a Steambox running Windows and if efforts had been made to make things like Big Picture Mode and Xbox Live standard Windows gaming features, Windows wouldn't be asking the Xbox team to prove their value, because that value would already be there.

I think Microsoft probably has a game or two in the pipeline that they haven't shown yet. Sony has a decent stable of exclusives right now, but most of them don't even have a release date.

The immediate future for Ms exclusives doesn't look overly great, but if they announce a few games due out within the next few years at E3 it would look a whole lot better. They did however come with a really solid games lineup the first 3 years of this gen, while Sony had a lack of meaningful exclusives. By many accounts, including many here on GAF, MS has been beating Sony in exclusives so far this gen. Even the Kinda Funny guys talked about it in one of their pocasts late last year.

We since got a flurry of titles announced by Sony like Detroit, Days Gone, God of War and Spiderman. However, correct me if I'm wrong, none of those even have a release date. Again we don't know what Microsoft has in their pipeline. You would think now would be a good time to show it with the scalebound cancellation, but they are probably waiting for the Scorpio E3 announcement to do that.

My point stands that I've been happier with Microsoft's exclusives so far this gen. One cancelled game doesn't change that. We'll see what the future holds.
