GameStop Reserves All of Its Initial Nintendo Switch Allocation

I pounced on an Amazon preorder for the Switch. Whereas with WiiU, I wouldn't have gotten it until mid-2013 if it weren't for my brother surprising me with one during Christmas 2012.

If they didn't sold out everything -> Lmao DOA it's doomed
If they sold out everything -> Lmao just like the Wii U it will also be DOA it's doomed
If Gamespot wouldn't have reported anything -> Lmao they don't even care about the console it's DOA, doomed etc.

These thread have taught me that Nintendo cannot escape from death, it's inevitable.

Let's not jump the gun. I think the Switch will be more successful then the Wii U but most new products sell out at launch. We should wait for April and May results to see if there is staying power.

Still a good sign though.

My god at people trying to derail every single positive Switch thread. It's hilarious and pathetic at the same time.
And surely the blind adoration of Nintendo's new offering is neither of those things.

There are no positive threads or negative threads. There are discussion threads. Go find an echo chamber somewhere else.

Wii U was readily available so I find that kind of hard to believe. Are you American?

Edit: I read your post wrong, sorry and ignore my comment!

I went to a store in the middle of nowhere in New Zealand and they had already nearly hit their allotment (20) before the presentation lol. And nintendo has always struggled here. For reference they said they got 3 wiiu preorders lol.

I know you're just parodying possible replies, but was it? Don't know the situation in the US, but when I walked during the afternoon into a German Saturn market and saw tons of unsold Wii Us on launch day, it dawned on me that the console will utterly flop.

In the US the Wii U sold 400k in it's first week of release in contrast to Wii's 600k the first 8 days. Supposedly the Wii U actually did sell through it's initial allotment. It wasn't exactly a disrespectable launch month, it's afterward where it all fell apart.

The one thing I'm getting from the news is that Switch at least isn't likely to have a poor first month but the NPD will be kind of interesting to compare since unlike most consoles it's releasing at the very beginning of the month rather than near the end of it.

Hmm. I actually saw GS was the only place that still had preorders open a few hours ago. Should've jumped on it then.

It's looking more likely I'll have to get it at a store If I find one.

If you wanted a switch why didn't you pre order one days ago? Most places don't charge you up front. At least none of the decent ones.

She thought the Wii U was going to be like the Wii in popularity and demand so she bought a bunch to sell on EBay. Odds are she just returned them when she couldn't flip them so she was just out a few hours of time.

The big question will be the 3 or 4 weeks after the switch comes out. Is it like the Wii where you had to line up for weeks and weeks if you wanted one or is it like the Wii U where you could walk into Best Buy 3 weeks after launch and grab a system off a giant pile.

I took that picture 2 days after Christmas right after the Wii U came out. The Wii U also sold out at launch.
Basics system....

The 3DS was a success though. I understand what you mean but that's an awful example.

3DS was a success after they dropped the price by almost $100. Which is a pretty good example, because it seems like a good chunk of people on this forum believe that the Switch could do well if it's price accordingly.

This tells us nothing of how well it'll end up doing. Just look at the Wii U.

IMO the bottom line is that it's going to do lousy because of it's price, it's specs, and it's lack of games. Look at the bigger picture of who is going to be buying this thing. From the info that we have so far, I'm guessing not a lot overall. That doesn't mean the initial shipment isn't going to fly off shelves. I'd be more surprised if it didn't.

I mean we will see more shipments open as we get closer to launch, especially on Amazon. And as we get closer it will last longer and longer in stock until it will no longer be an issue.

How are you pretending this is a given? This is Nintendo we are talking about, right?

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Tried telling you.

Good time to have something new at retail too, to leverage the increase in foot traffic (if you planned ahead!)

My local gamestop had like 30-40 units , if not more, allocated to it. When the 360 came out I think they had 50 at launch. So not too bad all things considered. Probably helps they had the breahtaking Wii U trading deal. My friend and I who weren't even going to get one at launch both ended up getting and paying it off with nothing but trade ins.

Unless your Gamestop back in the day was HUGE I doubt they had 50. The 360 had a lot of shipping problems early on. It was a very hot item that holiday.

2 million worldwide in a month is okay, I suppose. Especially given the time of year it's releasing. Assuming it actually gets there.

Nintendo only plans to sell 2 million in the entire month of March for the entire world so it makes sense that gamestop and others are gonna get all their allotment reserved.

40 were allocated at my local store, walked in at about 1630 Friday and the manager said six were left so I pre-ordered one and BoTW. Here's hoping more releases are unveiled before launch, otherwise I can live off of Zelda for a while but I wouldn't be able to recommend it to anyone who doesn't like Zelda at this point.

So is this good? Bad? Means nothing?

It means that interest is there and the question remains if interest will still be there come launch day and after.

Honestly if the Switch can do better than Wii U sales then they already on the right track.

And the 3DS was a success, so I don't know what you're talking about.

The article says the basic system was still available for pre-order both online and in store.

That says something about the basic bundle. In the end the basic bundle ended up being discontinued because of how unpopular it was. Yes, even for Wii U. The basic bundle was the Ouya of Wii U.

I was surprised by the 3/3 launch date, tbh. 2m for ~a couple weeks is one thing, but for an entire month? Hopefully they can turn out another batch quickly.

EDIT: But I am stoked that it's launching on my birthday. I already have my most wanted gift coming :)

Good for Nintendo and GameStop. Hopefully they can keep this momentum.

Edit: got my preorder in the day after the stream. My GameStop had 55.

Hmm, I should probably stop by at my local GameStop to ask around if they're still taking pre-orders. They had 14 yesterday in the nearest one to where I live.

There was a slickdeals thread on their forum where the scalpers was freaking when launch units weren't selling on Ebay. Like they were having existential crisises. Fascinating to watch in real time

Zhuge tweets said:
For those who want a reference.
GameStop had 500,000 total Wii U units at launch, all pre ordered.
1.2 million games were preordered too
That doesn't sound right. By the end of 2012 1.32m Wii Us had shipped in NA, 3.06m worldwide. That GameStop had half a mil day one seems slightly unlikely.

Sorry, not all of us want an echo chamber.

difference between "Echo chamber" and discussion derailed by constant "lol fail" and "doa" post or "lol just like wii u" post. the whole "echo chamber" argument is generally argued by people who want to shit post. But i digress.

Good showing, hopefully they can keep it up.

Can someone explain this photo?

I laugh everytime I see it, but I need to know the story behind it.

I don't think there is any story, other than some lady bought 6 WiiU systems to sell on eBay, and for some reason felt proud enough to step into the auction photos herself. It's mostly just funny in retrospect, that she (and many others) expected the system to be a Wii-style megahit, and it ended up flopping so hard.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=45464885

According to this NeoGAF thread she wasn't getting her asking price of $535, but who knows if she ever was able to sell off the systems.

Right, so it's odd that people keep making the comparison to Wii U. It would be a comparable situation if say only the red/blue Switch sold out.
Because is a positive Switch news, so they have to kill it quickly... I think. They post links that clearly says that the basic system still available for preorder..

When people are posting that it's DOA unironically despite no evidence to support it, it's time to realize you're just being negative to be negative.

I'm not saying we should all see this as a sign that this is the second coming of the Wii, but by no means is it a sign that Nintendo is in trouble. If anything the install base will be pretty good for the first run of the console.

So you haven't been here or anywhere in the world at Wii U's launch right? Because you would have known that the number of basic systems was very low compared to premium ones and that nobody wanted them because the value was shit by comparison. That's why Nintendo discontinued the basic bundle very quickly.
