Verge: Snap mode being removed with next Xbox one update

About fucking time they actually try and improve the piece of shit UI.

It's a clunky, unintuitive mess in its current state.

Good on them.

The only time I ever intentionally used snap was to play Threes while watching E3 conference streams (made sitting through boring Madden/FIFA segments tolerable).

No real loss with this change. Until E3 rolls around and I gotta play Threes on my phone instead.

What does this mean for custom soundtracks running on either Pandora or the "Simple Music Player" app? Or for Twitch streaming?

Its in the new guide.

Got an update yesterday with the new UI. It seems to be very nice now. I like pressing the Xbox button and having a screen pop up instead of "minimizing" the game. Also seems to be much faster. That being said, I never used the snap feature so I can't say if we are better/worse without it.

The new side guide they implemented copied from PS4 quick menu seems better for them than the snap so makes sense

Literally anything from the article

Xbox Platform head Mike Ybarra revealed the change on Twitter yesterday, noting that “we replaced Snap to improve multitasking, reduce memory use, improve overall speed, and free up resources going forward for bigger things.”

Was going to say. I remembered this being specifically said by Ybarra yesterday.

I hardly ever used it so I won't miss it. And it looks like it's being removed to help speed up the UI so it sounds like it's worth the sacrifice.

Good on missing out on the recent news about the Creators update coming to xbox, but instead paying attention to something that might be considered as a negative. good on you.

What? Why?!

"Xbox snap achievements" is something I yell at my Kinect all the time!

edit: actually read the article. If this helps speed up things, and they've already planned some sort of picture-in-picture-type replacement, then I suppose it's all well and good, I guess...

Except half the time, "Xbox Go To Achievements" also decides to open up a snap window rather than going to the full achievements page. I do not know why. I don't want the snap window. Way too fiddly. And I can never remember how to get out with buttons, so it's more yelling at Kinect until it registers "Xbox Unsnap"

Super duper. I use my Xbones only for media streaming in my bedroom and I yell at Cortana all the time for accidently snapping things over my movies. I don't have a controller in the room so it is irritating. Good riddance.

I only use this while streaming, so I am hoping they have a good alternative.

Also, It would be a crazy alternate universe to see what would've happened if MS launched with this gamers/games focused approach back in 2013 and left all these TV / Kinect oriented features out. Basically launched with Xbone S vs PS4. The landscape would be drastically different I would imagine.

Good anything that reduces the God aweful lag of the XB1 OS is welcome.

Hopefully with Scorpio it will be liquid smooth as well.

I used to use the shit out of snap when the xb1 first launched. It was perfect for playing games and watching football at the same time. In fact, it was one of the main reasons I wanted an xb1 over a ps4.

I dont use the feature much anymore, but if they are taking away features, it better make noticeable improvements.

If this can fix the horrible sluggish nature of the dashboard, then maybe its worth it. But if I dont see any practical improvements and youre just taking things away from me, then I think its the wrong move.

Somehow, I have a feeling everything will feel the same and the removed features wont fix anything.

are we getting any kind of replacement?

honestly a small overlay like the achievements version but with video would be WAY better anyway

PiP is probably coming instead of it.

I hope that, as some of you point out, PiP is going to replace it. I can see that I am in a minority but this is actually the only reason I choose to play some of the games on the Xbone (for example Diablo III). I like to put a youtube channel or a podcast and play grindy games.
Man, that will be a bummer if I lose that...

This is a lame move.

If it means they can dedicate more resources to letting games run better on the OG X1, then I guess it's ok, but I loved the idea of snap, and we just finally got Background music working.

It was flawed, but still cool. I will be sad to see it go.

Background music is now in the new guide.

Isn't it being removed for a Picture-in-Picture mode though? That's the better road anyway.

Still a little salty that I didn't get an invite. Sony better send me an invite next month for their beta or I'm 0/2.

I think this is it. So we can hopefully just overlay a small video feed on the screen rather than a full app down the side

Yep, seems reasonable. Snap Mode worked, but compared to the overlays it was always slower and a bit finicky to use if you weren't using the voice commands (hey, that describes a lot of OG XB1 features :p)

I don't often snap video just because I have a second monitor right there, but if it's just changed to a PiP seems like it's a beneficial move since there's less wasted space.

I streamed using it the other night and it popped up on the right side to configure the stream, then went fullscreen automatically when it started.

Never used it when I owned an XB1, was always surprised they reserved memory and performance for such a feature. Sorry for those who'll miss it, but I think it's a very good move to get rid of it..

Pretty much guarantee that scorpio won't have an hdmi passthrough. Almost everything that MS tried to innovate with the XB1 will be gone.

Good riddance - it was absolutely useless in its current form. Even if I had the patience to wait for a video app to load after being snapped, I could then enjoy a terrible viewing experience as the snapped application was restricted to about 10% of the total screen, and had huge empty space above or below it in order to preserve the aspect ratio.

Picture in picture would be a much more elegant approach to this but I don't even want that if the performance is as poor as it was with Snap.

Can someone explain I me why the headline is saying "removing" instead of "replacing"

Just seems kind of misleading
