Verge: Snap mode being removed with next Xbox one update

It was a good idea, but in practice nothing except for live or core non media apps worked that well. If you tried snapping even a you tube video shit was slow and sluggish. Most of the apps that were supported also didn't have the required UI in snap mode so it never worked well having to switch from full screen. Also just the sheer distance from my TV made it just way less usable than snapping on my computer monitor.

lol good riddance

The thing only ever tripped me up in the early days of the OS. I never found any use for it.

The new side guide they implemented copied from PS4 quick menu seems better for them than the snap so makes sense

The Guide was added in the NXOE update in December 2015.

The PS4 Quick Menu was added in the 4.0 update in September 2016.

I didn't know Microsoft had a time machine.

Can someone explain I me why the headline is saying "removing" instead of "replacing"

Just seems kind of misleading

Because as of yet its been removed and questions to major and @xboxqwik have gone unanswered.

And those who say it didn't work BS it didn't i have used it on all 4 of my systems without issue and that is even have all 4 in the preview program. snapping TV was geat and didn't mess with gaming at all!

The Xbox One UI was already slow, but snapping stuff brought the snapped app to a crawl.

I'm glad it's gone. I tried using Youtube and especially Skype several times and it was shocking to me that the level of performance achieved was deemed worthy of release.

Removing it and doing nothing else would already at least hide a blemish, but if it's taking the overall UI slowness with it then it goes from good move to fantastic move IMO.

I always thought Snap take unnecessary resources from the system making it lag a lot more than normal.

That is good.

This is for the best. I enjoy watching a show in the background while playing games sometimes. However, the snap feature took up too much screen real estate. You didn't get the best of both worlds or even a good compromise.

Microsoft is now on a mission to improve dashboard speed and multitasking, and snap mode is being removed to help improve the overall dashboard lag.
They should have made the dashboard without lag since beginning without features that compromised it.

I streamed using it the other night and it popped up on the right side to configure the stream, then went fullscreen automatically when it started.

I hope twitch gets updated to bring the configuration menu too the guide- just like how beam will handle it.

The guide seems like a great place for multitasking widgets.

They could do TV PiP the same way- Just pop open the guide to resize or move the PiP window or adjust sound mixer.

Pretty much guarantee that scorpio won't have an hdmi passthrough. Almost everything that MS tried to innovate with the XB1 will be gone.

I sure hope not, HDMI passthrough was a selling feature to me. It would be as useful with PiP.

I liked watching Twitch while playing stuff and using Edge on the side. Sad to hear that it will be gone. This was what made the One unique for me.

Snap was always garbage because it was worse than the XBox 360 overlay. Checking your achievements on XBone is a PAIN.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere here but i thought Snap mode was being killed off to be replaced by something better.

First, consider Mike's Tweet:
https://twitter.com/XboxQwik/status/823937530676453376
We replaced Snap to improve multitasking, reduce memory use, improve overall speed, and free up resources going forward for bigger things.

Replacing is different then removing...plus he mentions "bigger things"

Additionally i remember this article from way back in November...

http://www.windowscentral.com/future-xbox-dashboard-new-guide-menu

Some key parts in the article...
Coming to Xbox: an overhauled Guide and the end of Snap Mode
this new menu will display your pins, allowing you to customize what apps and games appear in the new tab for easy access. Microsoft has also been testing a single button press to access the Guide menu, as opposed to the double-tap implementation available today........

Removing Snap Mode to introduce new Multitasking features

I've been told that Snap Mode could be getting removed completely. Indeed, Universal Windows Platform apps are currently completely unable to utilize Snap Mode, and denying UWP apps access to the feature could be evidence enough of its impending removal.

Instead, Xbox looks to be exploring the possibility of a picture-in-picture multitasking implementation, where "snapped" app would simply hover in the corner of your game, rather than wiping out a quarter of your screen with a largely empty bar.....Details on this new feature are scant, however. Picture-in-picture mode would prevent media apps from losing their most useful multi-tasking functionality, without needing to utilize the legacy Snap Mode feature that UWP apps are currently unable to access.

Fingers crossed picture-in-picture hasn't been scrapped.

It's funny all the people here saying they are happy snap is gone but in the preview forum for this update there are posts all over of people pissed it gone.

I'd prefer this. I like snap but would prefer a faster UI. If it has to die for the latter so be it but the option would be nice.

Thy said it was something about allowing to free some memory, speed up the dash and allow for bigger features coming.

If theyre removing it, it was probably not being used much.

The more I think about it, the more I feel PiP is the better solution than snap in every way. It's just so much more flexible. I hope they go all in on the potential.

I imagine that For TV, you could place the window where you like, resize the window, adjust the sound mixer and adjust the opacity to your liking all from the guide widget. Just want to listen to a show? Turn opacity all the way down, and play your game with a full screen.

Fantasy football? Why take up 1/6 of your screen at all times? Why not just have a small overlay window that updates you when a player on your team scores and pops open to show you the highlight?

Streaming. Again, why bring up a massive menu to configure your stream. Just do it from the guide. Configure your overlay to display your chat and viewer totals... or turn them off.

I'm really not seeing any negatives tbh, especially not if the system runs faster now.

"IF" is the relative term here. In my personal experience, every dashboard / guide update would start out nice and buttery fast. then after some time (a few weeks to a month) it would return back to the same 'ol lagginess in the store and guide. This seems like the same thing is going to occur with the current update and if it does it will have been a waste of time again for MS.

The Xbox One OS is a slow, confusing piece of garbage. I hope it gets rehauled as thoroughly as possible or canned and replaced outright.

Snap was never given the system resources to be successful. They needed everything they could get to keep games at good performance during the beginning of the gen. Best laid plans and whatnot.

Ummm, it's not that bad. I kind of like it. It's constantly being tweaked and had gotten better over time.

Wait i saw a few posters mention PiP.

Is this confirmed? if so this is WAAYYYYYY better than snap.

id much rather have an overlay of the video than shrinking 1/4 of the screen to squeeze snap in.
